Jim Armstrong Service Department was open on Memorial Day and did an amazing job of helping my daughter who was stranded in route to her home in Nashville. They explained the problem well. They provided a loaner car. They had her back on the road the next day. They didn't push add-on services but instead, knowing she was in route, explained what issues they found in a car walk-a-round and advised her on getting these things addressed when she got home. They took care of some maintence work I had put off-brakes, headlight assemblies, and new axel. They kept me updated on progress of the repairs since I dropped off my car. REFUSED to Let us TEST-DRIVE Subaru- Definitely not living up to the LOVE of the SUBARU BRAND- My mother has been contemplating buying a Subaru for almost a year. We arrived to this very small lot with very little selection. We asked about the electric Subaru to which he began putting the car down, making disparaging comments about the electric being a mistake, and going on about his friend's Tesla problems. He stated that it was the electric Subaru was a bad idea and that they would not sell in the Hickory NC area. We were there to test-drive a Subaru, but this guy was not interested in that. A Toyota Rav 4 trade-in caught my mom's eye because it was AWD. It had a sticker price of around a bit more$16k. He steered us/directed us toward that vehicle (Toyota Rav4) that was a trade-in though I had already told him mom was really here to drive a Subaru. While mom was still looking at Subaru's, he said to me, "What is your price range because these Subaru's are around $24K. I said, mom will pay cash for whatever car she chooses if she likes it, and he kept saying the Subaru's are more expensive. I just looked at him and said does not require any financing. She would write him a check for the right car. He clearly did not think we could afford his cars. I tried to stay positive, and ignore/forgive his ignorance, but as the situation unfolded more, I told my mom "This is weird. This is a Subaru dealership. Why are they not trying to show you the Subaru?" She agreed to test-drive the Toyota and he said he would ride with us, which was totally fine and customary. However, he came out with a Demonstration Permit and told us to take the Toyota on our own, he was too busy and short-handed. We returned from the test-drive and mom said, I came here to test-drive a Subaru Outback. A woman greeted us to get the Toyota keys, but quickly retreated inside the dealership even though I told I her my mom wanted to drive a Subaru next. The woman smiled and said to let her know which Subaru she wanted to drive. After about 5 minutes, Mom picked two she wanted to drive. I started walking toward the dealership and the man came back out instead of the woman. Mom told him she wanted to drive just two particular cars. He told my mom that she can drive the car if she agreed to buy it. Let me say that again, he said, "YOU CAN TEST DRIVE THE CAR IF YOU AGREE TO BUY IT." It was drizzling outside, but not a storm or anything, keep in mind, we had been walking in this misting drizzle for about 5 minutes deciding which Subaru to drive. The man stated that if he let my mom test-drive the vehicle, he would have to wash it, and so unless she promised to buy it, she could not drive it! I was like, "Are you serious?" And he got beligerant, rushed back over to the Toyota making sure it was locked, and I told mom she should just go somewhere else because the way we were being treated was ridiculous. I told him I have never heard of a dealership refusing to allow a customer and potential buyer to drive a car because he would have to wash the car if she drove it. He was rude and couldn't care less. I told him I was going to contact Subaru and tell them that his dealership was refusing to let customers test-drive their vehicles because he will have to wash them. OBVIOUSLY, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS "BUSINESS." THEY ARE A STAIN ON THE SUBARU NAME. Further, Subaru should stop sending this Jim Armstrong any electric vehicles to sell because he is trying to TALK CUSTOMERS OUT OF BUYING THEM BEFORE CAN EVEN LOOK or Consider Electric Vehicles. It was a terrible experience and I apologized to my mom because I suggested to her going there, and I led her into that embarrassing and humiliating experience with Mr. Jim Armstrong. Why can't people be kind? Why??? If you are not there to sell cars and offer test-drives to consumers, post a sign so that you don't waste our time. SHAMEFUL. THE SUBTEXT here is this guy did not believe my mom could afford his cars, and that is why he gave the ultimatum to buy the vehicle and refused a test-drive unless we promised to buy it. Actually this is an unfair and deceptive trade practice, because had my mom agreed, it would have been a coercive transaction. My mom told me not to bother complaining because no one would care. Being used to huge dealerships, at first I was a little hesitant, because this is not a large dealership - even though they had plenty of cars, and accessibility to more. Any hesitance disappeared as soon as I met Mike Abernethy. Throughout the sales experience, Mike's communication to us revealed his primary concerns as being focused on meeting our needs. Best no hassle car buying experience ever! I live an hour away and was dealing with local Subaru dealers that I wasn't happy with. I did an internet inquiry and immediately heard back from Terri. I called her to let her know I was interested in the car and she put me in touch with Mike Houser. Mike was receptive to my phone calls and questions as well as being patient with someone who lived out of town with questions. I had an awful experience. After driving multiple hours just to see the car I was ready to buy, I was told by Mike Houser, the salesperson I got stuck with, that he wants to talk numbers first and that he won't bother getting the car dirty if he can't settle. He started writing a bunch of scribbled numbers on a piece of paper and told me that so and so was my out the door price. Explaining those numbers was a great annoyance to him. He finished his sales pitch by literally throwing a brochure that explains the extended warranty at me. I didn't bother any further. I was disgusted with the entire process. I have owned three Subaru's and will probably always drive one. The reason I went to Armstrong to buy my 2013 Outback was their excellent Service Dept. I thought this until my last service work. They said everything was fine and three weeks later I had an inspection. at a local company in my town. Well the tires did not pass inspection and the toe in had caused the tires to be slick on the inside. I understand that Armstrong Subaru does not sell tires and does not have an alignment machine, but they should have shared the information with me that I needed the new tires and alignment. This is dangerous and I could have been killed. I call Terry, who is a very efficient person and he explained that he was training a new Service Manger and it slipped through the cracks. I don't know if I will return to the dealership for future work. read more

This was a totally new and enjoyable experience for me. I know that you're intrigued now. After browsing a couple of new Subarus, I decided to do a test drive. I was nicely surprised when I signed a form and he handed me the keys. "You're not coming with me?" Response, with a smile: "Nope, but if you're gone more than an hour, I'll send someone after you." Cool. I really like test driving without a sales person. It has a totally different, low pressure feel to it. You don't feel like someone is trying to size you up while you're trying to focus on how the car drives and handles. The Outback and Legacy were both nice and fun to drive. If you know something about Subarus, you probably know how popular they are. Dealerships rarely have anything other than some new Foresters (a less popular model) on the lot. Why? People buy them sight unseen or need to order them due to scarcity; they are basically sold before they get to the dealership. I didn't end up buying a vehicle from them, but I did have a great experience test driving and learning more about the brand. If you're in Hickory and want to buy a Subaru, ask for Michael. read more
