Jewel continues to be a decent all around grocery store. Over the years they have made great improvements to the fresh produce and they have a really good Gluten free section - even carrying Schar artisan bread - the best gf bread we've found so far. This is our local jewel, we always come here when we need to pick up some groceries. It's always quiet and fully stocked with whatever I need. It's rarely ever messy and no one is rude to you. Coming during the week is a lot easier than coming during the weekends...less crowded and easier to grab what you need and go. Coming to get bucket of wing zings when you don't want to cook is always a plus! Otherwise, no complaints here. It's close, it's clean and we do what we need to do and can leave a happy camper. Nothing to complain about, quick and efficient customer service all around. It's all good here! read more

I shop at all of the stores in the area, and this particular store is by far the most deceptive in its practices. After you clip the coupons online, they rarely work. Furthermore, their Wi-Fi to check to see if the coupons are clipped has yet to work in months. So when the guy at self-checkout grills you if you clipped them, you can't show them. This particular store requires an inspection of its practices. You can't check to see if it's taken off until you call someone over to question the charges and they ALWAYS act like you are a cheapstake and pain in the ass! It's grocery store theft plain and simple. It happens too frequently for it to be a simple error. read more

I am really starting to love this Jewel. Ya know... when you move you have to get used to everything again. I knew where everything was in my old Jewel... ... but now I am used to this Jewel and am really liking it! They have great produce (I guess because there is a Fresh Market a few doors down, they have to have nice produce to compete). Hubby and I like to have veggie nibbles during the week and this place has everything we like: snap peas, baby cucumbers, carrots, and more. I got a big bag of carrots for less than $2. They also have a nice meat selection. I bought their pork chops when they had them for $1 each. They were very lean and juicy. They have a wide selection of everything... yogurts, cheeses, chips, pop (or soda for you non-midwesterners), liquor... just about anything you can think of! The staff is nice... I was disappointed that they didn't have paper bags with handles... but then one of the staff told me you just have to ask for it at check out. Voila! Paper bags with handles! read more

Jewel is my go-to general grocery store now that the Dominick's near me closed. I like how it's just the right size for my shopping needs (Mariano's/Costco are both way too big and super overwhelming). Jewel has a good selection of fruits and their pre-cut fruit cups/bowls are cheaper than what Dominick's used to have. With my time-constraints these days, it's nice to be able to buy pre-cut fruits that aren't all that expensive, especially for things like pineapple, grapefruit, and oranges that involve a ton of cutting and peeling. They also have an entire aisle or two specifically dedicated to organic products if that's what you're into. Staff here are just so-so. I've ran into some friendly cashiers but most are just whatever about greeting you or ringing you up. I've also gotten some overly enthusiastic folks that continuously offer to help bring my groceries out to my car. One time, I literally had to repeat "No thanks, it's okay" 5 times in a row before this old guy stopped asking me if I needed help. Right.....a LITTLE BIT creepy, not going to lie. Another time (by a different gentleman), I was questioned about where I came from - he seemed to have never met an Asian person before in Lake Forest...or was just confused about what an Asian-American person is. Grocery shopping-wise, this location is convenient and easily accessible for me. The parking lot always seems crowded no matter what time or what day I come even though finding parking itself isn't ever difficult. Weird. It's also a good location as Fresh Market is next door if you want another grocery option. Donati's Pizza is also just down the street too! read more

This has been my go-to grocery store for at least 20 years though I've recently been comparing prices with Mariano's and they have Jewel bet. My primary "beef" with this store is the meat department. I show up many times on Saturday mornings between 8 and 9. The meat department isn't open for business. Maybe the seafood case is being packed with the "fresh daily delivery", that's one of the employee's excuses, but if you want something else? If they help you, it's as though you've asked for the moon. Annoying! Having said that, Jewel has variety that Mariano's doesn't have on items I buy. All flavors of Oreos (husband likes these), lots of assortment in the organic and natural foods, all of the Progresso soup line. As it turns out, I've continued to go to Jewel for some items. Also, in a pinch, the store is only a few miles from home. read more

I want to give 3.5 stars 1/2 Star let down by the actual decor - seems a little old Jewel Osco is known to be a 'good enough' grocery store. It is my go to for daily food and I have always found the staff very helpful and friendly. The amount of organic produce on offer is great and has own brand organic at a fantastic price point. I want organic but I don't want to pay a premium for it. No this place isn't pretty like Fresh Market but it doesn't even compare and I wouldn't go to Fresh market to pick up daily supplies in the same way. Flowers are always great -3 bunches for $12 Fresh bread daily that can be sliced to order I don't use the fresh meat counter as I only buy grass fed but I struggle with this in most stores to be honest. This isn't the largest Jewel store, but it still has great selection, a very good produce section and, contrary to what a few other posts here claim, always attentive and nice staff. The new one is Deerfield is larger, as is the one in Highland Park. But the Lake Forest store has lower customer volume, so it's calmer and not crowded. The grilled chicken here is the best in the world. I find the deli staff to be always attentive and the cashiers nice. And the soundtrack is good, too. It's my favorite grocery store. What people should be aware of is many items are priced differently on the shelf and once you get to the check-out cashier. Higher, never lower! Happens at least one a week to me. I called over the manager the other day and they DO NOT give you the item anymore if the price is different at the cashier versus the shelf. This is my least favorite Jewel. The store is dated and it is always very slow in the checkout line! Today I waited behind an elderly lady. The woman needed her husband to be paged in order to pay her bill. I waited patiently for him to show up and pay. I was only buying bananas. My bill came to $1.23. I gave the cashier, Robert B a 5 dollar bill and 23 cents, while bagging my own groceries. I then found a single in my wallet and said here, I have exact change, I'll give you the $1 and take my $5 bill back. He said it was too late, and he proceeded to count out 4 $1 bills. I then said here's another dollar, please give me a $5. He told me he is not allowed to give out change?! Excuse me, isn't that his job as a cashier?! Just your average tight downtown Jewell-Osco. They close early at 10PM nightly but they have a decent selection for not being the biggest grocery store. It's a good store for close to home shipping but if I'm traveling I will go to larger stores that have a better selection. read more

I was doing my groceries as I often do, I was starving so I decided to buy some chicken wings, what was my surprise when I saw the grocery attendant throwing those in he big bin just to replace them for the ones recently done which were oily and fattier even looking worse than the ones I was ready to buy, I could not believe this action which seems to be a routinely one for the shop attendant. What is this policy to throw away perfectly good food, when there is people literally with nothing to eat here in Chicago??!! This was not a good experience for me the shopper: knowing this supermarket is throwing good food like this makes me wonder about how other things are handled inside. I thought better of Jewel Osco, but my perception has changed from a place that wastes food like this instead of using it for a good cause. read more

This Jewel is the absolute worst grocery store I have ever been to. The workers here, especially behind the deli, are horribly rude. They have terrible produce and no cart return in the parking lot. Carts are slipping all over the lot smashing into cars one after the other. Do yourself a favor and go right next door to Fresh Market. read more

Jewel just updated / remodeled the in-town Lake Forest IL store. It's a shame for a company thats been on the Chicago scene for so long to be so far behind the times. Even though its so close to where I live, I choose to drive to other supermarkets than spend my money at Jewel. Recently they added a salad bar and whoever designed this should be fired, nice try, but it seems its only there because of the preassure of Marianos and Heinens. I have found over the last several years the level of in store service from its employees to go way down as so many of them act as if they are doing you a favor to help you. If I am already in town and forget to stop somewhere else I will go in to the store, otherwise I shop at Marianos or Heinens. Jewel needs to wake up, seems to me they have a corporate management problem and this reflects down to the local store employees. Once again disappointed at the local Jewel. Went in at 6:15 to pick up some wine and wings for the biggest Hawks game of the year. They are completely out of wings. The employees at this store are unhelpful and generally unpleasant. The food is overpriced and in my experience fresh fruits and veggies are a rarity. I'm not usually the type of person to leave nasty reviews for places especially grocery stores, but for the jewel in Lake Forest I felt it was necessary. Um, it's a Jewel. This one is moderately above-average thanks to some renovations over time. It has a very nice produce section that's attractive and well-lit, as well as a fine selection and a solid Osco. The pharmacists are also very helpful. The one downside is a small, somewhat tight parking lot, but the nice aspect of Lake Forest that none of the other towns in the North Shore have is that there is parking all the way up the main street (Western) along the train line. There is a Fresh Market a couple of doors down and while two grocery stores together doesn't sound like the brightest idea, the two stores actually do a very nice job complimenting each other's offerings. read more

Dont' buy anything from their Bakery dept unless you don't mind employees handling breads with their dirty bare hands. I saw employees touching bread, bagels, or whatever maybe, with their hands without gloves, countless times. Really gross! I reported to the customer service, Asst. Manager many times, but nothing changed. If they are being openly so unsanitary, I wonder what they would do when customers are not looking. I don't shop there anymore. read more
