I love how other people review this chain of supermarkets and think they will find pricing compared to Jewel or Mariano's. The difference with Sunset Foods is that they offer a lot of options, more high end, than the cheaper larger competitors. What you'll find at Sunset are departments with friendly and helpful staff. management that cares about its customers, and people willing to help at every turn of the store. Sure, I know I'm paying more for the same food and produce I can get elsewhere cheaper, but the quality is better at Sunset and the produce tends to last longer. I love the fact that as you bring your cart to pay, the management is there to guide you to an available cashier or a short line and then they empty your cart onto the belt. They help you to your car and even load your groceries in your trunk if you need the help. There are no other stores in our area (that I'm aware of) that have such great customer service. Lastly, one of the best services they have is that if they don't have an item you're looking for, you can let them know at customer service and they will get it in stock for you. Disappointed. This location repeatedly runs "bait-and-switch" Saturday sales where you walk in and--surprise--the item isn't available. I asked for a simple rain check and was refused. Then I asked for a manager at 4:00 pm on a Saturday and was told none were available. Not a good experience. I won't be back. And for prices this high, they should do better. read more

Usually, I shop at a different Sunset location, where I am treated very well by the staff, but I was passing this one. The Long Grove staff (fish, meat, and cashier) was unkind, and could not care less about how I was treated as a customer. I had to ask the meat manager for two pounds of grass fed ground beef. He came back with two packages, and gave them to me. I noticed the date was going to expire the next day! I asked him about it, and he said "You get this, and have two days to use it." He would not give me different beef, or the correct amount I had asked for. I only received 1.46 lbs, not the 2 lbs I needed. He turned away from me to help a different woman. It was not crowded, by the way. I will never use the meat counter at this location ever again. I went to use the meat, and it had already begun to oxidize. Clearly, he was trying to dump the old meat. This is not the Sunset way, or at least the way I knew as a child. My mom and grandma always bought their meat and poultry at Sunset, but not at this location. Try Highland Park, or Libertyville. read more

First timer oh boy. First impression the employee at the door greeted me with a cheery smile. The employee beside her looked me in my face & proceeded with the baked goods until another customer walked in then she cheerfully greeted him. I only visited to purchase the organic egg deal, & to browse the store. I walked the store searching for eggs. I stopped in the middle of the floor baffled at the layout unable to find the eggs, an employee walks past me, no acknowledgment. Two employees standing against the wall in friendly chat looked me in my face & continued their conversation. God forbid they break their chat to ask the customer if assistance is needed. I proceeded to search for the eggs retracing my steps certain I must have missed them. I encountered a frequent customer frustrated that "they've completely changed everything around" An employee with a mop walks up & they begin chatting. In the end it was the regular customer (not an employee) who not only directed me to the eggs, but followed up when I encountered him again heading towards the checkout. The egg deal I intended to purchase was an "error in this week's advertisement". After the frustration trying to locate the eggs I didn't even bother browsing the disorganized store. Based on my experience in the store, the disorganized layout, unhelpful employees, scarce options I seriously doubt I'll be returning. The store was clean, plenty of parking. read more

Sunset is my 'go to' for a change. I usually shop at Jewel, Aldi or Target (all located in Mundelein) because of price. Sunset just feels like a treat. First the store is clean and bright. Second, they have many prepared foods. Although pricey, it's a good place to pick up homemade style soup, chicken and salads. I look for sales and closeouts and get bargains that way. Recently bought Eight O'clock whole bean coffee on sale and glad I did since coffee pricing is on the rise. Unfortunately it's not a store I would do a large pantry shopping and spend $200 - $250.00 in restocking. That's only because so many of the brands can be purchased elsewhere for 20-25% less. For me just an alright grocery store. As it doesn't seem to specialize too much in any one area, it's more of a change-of-pace store from me from Heinen's or Mariano's. If i'm coming here it'll be usually to get some prepared item like bakery or hot food for convenience as they seem to be overall more expensive in general for the majority of items versus other grocery stores nearby. Parking is pretty easy here and checkout lines are a reasonable length. read more

Came for fresh turkey leg and wings. Good service on phone. That's where it ended. First stop was pastry I asked a lady stocking shelves . Couldn't even turn around and talk to me just waved her arm and pointed. Nothing like eye contact. Next stop was produce looking at the produce . I hear an employee very loudly shout EXCUSE ME . I was surprised because she could have gone around there was so much clearance. 2nd if a guest is looking at the produce don't be so rude. Next stop was liquor I asked for some ideas for martinis not helpful . Fooled some ideas asked for two ingredients and he points . I found what I needed no thanks to the guy in the liquor department I assume( had a green vest)? Usually sunsets service is 2 Nd to none. Not today. After we checked out were loading car in carport and there's an older man curb-siding and I hear another employee saying to this guy want to step outside . I'm sorry I was just appalled and I really don't use that word but what the heck. Maybe COVID 19 maybe holidays but there's NO EXCUSE for this behavior. We went in today for advertised Colcannon. It was a Sunset Foods- ugh a creative recipe, no cabbage with the potatoes. Awful. Then, Sunset Foods had "Irish Pea Soup." Ha ha ha... It was NOTHING Irish. It was watery, kale, and a bunch of hipster ingredients vegetarian. Does anyone even research recipes and origins? Then, walking through the seafood area, the smell was so horrible, I started throwing up! Why hasn't the Health Department been here? I went into Sunset Foods the other day to buy something nice from the bakery. When the case with the cookies was opened it was filled with flies. I don't mean a couple, I mean filled with flying bugs. I was speechless, said a few words to the person helping me and walked away. Before leaving I spoke the the assistant manager who told me she would take care of it. Somehow I wasn't convinced. I called the store the next morning and spoke to the store manager who had no knowledge of the incident. She assured me she would take. Are of it and report back it me . I have heard nothing. I've come here a half dozen times anytime I think, I get treated differently for the way I look, and if I looked older I'm pretty sure it will get better service. Today the service was decent. It's lunchtime and you would think they'd have more than two registers open and they didn't. Understand that it is lunchtime and you have a hot and cold bar which I would think mean you want to customers come in for a quick and go service. Not the case. Luckily for me they noticed this and opened up two more lines. Unfortunately for me because they Were in a hurry and decided not to weigh my food on the hot bar. What is normally 6.98 a pound and meal came out to 9.35 for a small box hot lunch. Not weighed just a price given. Such a small meal for $10. First and only visit. Stopped in to get a couple items. I had passed the store numerous times to and from work. When I went through the register there was a problem with their equipment and they asked me to step to another register. This was after my card had been run through. I did so. But when I got home there were two charges. One for my purchase and another for $72.99. I call and was assured " it's just an approval, it won't actually he charged". The next day it processed as a sale. Obviously the register started working and someone added to my original purchase and got their groceries for free. I called back and was told they would look into it all call me back. No call. I call the next day and now they're talking about looking at cameras...I don't care. You charged me for $73 worth of stuff I didn't purchase. They don't seem to care about my experience whatsoever. They just want to get to the bottom of their mistake. Horrible customer service. I should have received an immediate refund. I explained to them exactly what happened. I gave up and filed a fraud claim with my credit card company. Of course now I've spent 45 minutes trying to fix a problem relating to a $7.61 purchase on my part. I have to get new credit cards and update all my other accounts with the new cc#. What a fiasco. Yikes, what a morning. First and foremost, I did misinterpret the fine print of a coupon. But, rather than explain the correct terms to me, this long haired, old manager was very eager to tell me "Absolutely no" so patronizingly, I thought she was about to bend me over her knee and give me a good ol spanking. Not the controlled type of spanking either, oh no siree. The type where she sees red, grits her teeth and whips her long, wrinkly hand, cutting through the air and tearing through flesh. Very unprofesh, given her age. I feel bad for the cashier and bagger for having to deal with morons like me and volatile managers like her. They seem very nice and communicative. This store is just OK for me - not my favorite grocer, but it's OK and I would come back nonetheless. The prepared food selection is good and I like their homemade potato chips. However, I found the selection of food to be not as great as other places and the prices to be somewhat more expensive at other grocers. Also, I find it very strange to have someone unload my cart for me. I mean, it's a nice idea, but really unnecessary. Typical sunset foods. Good for picking up a desert or food item on the go. Very close to my in laws in long grove so I usually drop in for a dinner accessory. The sweets are pretty good value. The fresh squeezed pineapple orange juice is delicious, but super pricey. Jewel or Mariano's is much cheaper for the same product. The cashiers always seem annoyed and there's not much staff around to ask questions / locations etc. I'll be back, because of the location and accessibility. read more

Horrible just horrible. My 16 year old daughter went in to buy three things for the house. Tupperware, apples and her favorite ravioli. When she walked out with her friend, the workers started yelling at her saying that she was stealing the stuff, since they "didn't her remember paying". But, i got the transaction in the car, they really did pay, plus i saw them at the cashiers through the window. These ladies working there are crazy. Later, they came up to them again and said again they did pay. My daughter said she did and said the cashier that she paid at. The woman told my daughter no while the other continued yelling at her. the next minute one of the ladies walked by again and said "oh yeah i was there." "i remember now." "sorry". These workers shouldn't be thinking my daughter and her friend "stole" when the didn't, and never would. Plus how could they forget if they were just there watching. I wouldn't recommend comping here for the overpriced produce and the horrible staff and managers. I know i sound like the basic Karen but this whole situation is not ok. read more

Anyone who knows me, will tell you that grocery shopping is the ONLY kind of shopping (outside of VS) that I enjoy. That being said, I have standards for the grocery stores I frequent. Sunset Foods meets and exceeds them all. They have incredible pre-made selections (I'm partial to their salads) and the staff is extremely helpful. I stopped for salmon one afternoon and was perplexed by the numerous varieties that were staring back at me. The young man behind the counter was more than helpful, made me laugh and hand wrapped and delivered the perfect filet right to my cart. Beyond that, they have an extensive selection of organic foods and snacks. The store is always in pristine condition, and the employees are a pleasure to work with. This location has, in my opinion, a much better layout than the lake forest location. Try the Kale salad! read more

This place is seriously a disappointment, and i felt a slew of bittnerness. Everything here costs marginally higher than a regular grocery store, yet i cannot even compare this to a whole foods, fresh market or even a marianos. The layout was somewhat confusing, variety limited. There is honestly no reason to come here. Lack of a hot food bar like they have at other premium food places. Sunset Foods is likely my favorite store since moving here from Florida. This location is also the only grocery store I pass on my way home from work, and I have never seen it crowded which makes me like it even more. Produce is good, as well as the selection. I was confused that no one is in the department to weigh the produce, as with other locations - but not anything that would make me lower a rating. Don't shop much in the frozen section - except that I think they were the first to carry Graeter's ice cream in the area, as well as the infamous Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls flavor from a while back. Did find some frozen pretzel dinner rolls there once that we're good and I have never seen elsewhere. Canned, boxed, and snacks, etc are about the same as anywhere else. Smaller selection, maybe. The deli is where they really shine. When I ate meat I was so happy that they carry my beloved Boar's Head brand. Their prepared foods in the deli are also good. I've not had much of it but what I did try was tasty. They have prepared dinners I think daily so you only have to re-heat. I like the bread in the bakery, and the muffins were good. Never had anything else from there. Staff is AMAZING!! Always ready to help, and they load your groceries in to the belt at checkout for you. I was shocked when I shopped at Sunset for the first time because of it. They will also load them in to the car for you, I believe. Now...the downside. It is extremely expensive to shop here. I mean outrageous. It can be anywhere from 30% more to double the price of other stores. I mainly shop her, Mariano's, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods and I have seen the same product at Sunset for double what Whole Foods charges. That's pretty pricey. The only other disappointing thing I've had happen is that I purchased brea machine yeast here in May or $8.99 a jar. The expiration date was one month later. I wasn't happy. I was even less happy when I found the same bread machine yeast for $4.99 a jar at Mariano's with an expiration date in 2015. So the perk of this location not being crowded can apparently also result in products staying on the shelf for way longer than they should. read more

Sunset Foods in Long Grove is a absolute treat. Clean never to crowded great selection of food and a special time for spending 2 hours shopping with my daughter every week-end. I don't know why but this place gives me a warm fuzzy feeling and just oozes with class. Expect great bakery items, terrific deli selection, good kosher section, fresh quality fruit, smiling faces NO pushing or shoving or obnoxious behavior (like clientele in Sunset Highland Park). Long Grove people are just plain nice. Free coffee and lots of fresh samples. We love to support this store. Oh Well "THERE GOES THE NEIGHBOURHOOD". Dominics closed so all the local rif raf have invaded Sunset like a herd of crazed Wildebees crossing the Limpopo, clogging the aisles bumping into people what a fiasco. My grandmother used to take me to the Sunset in Northbrook on special trips when I was a kid. It was the only place she would buy her groceries, and it was a truly special treat to be able to go with her. While I'm much older now, the special feeling of Sunset remains. I stopped in yesterday to pick up the last items needed for my first ever Seder. Sunset always spews class, and my trip yesterday was no exception. Everything is immaculately clean and has a place. The staff is mega friendly and has an insane willingness to help. The butcher even went in the back and cut me a shankbone for my seder plate when there were none readily available. Each section is well stocked, and although I am not kosher by any stretch of the imagination (1/2 Italian, anyone?) it was easy to find the kosher delicacies needed for my seder plate. I knock off one star for the layout of the store... it took me longer to find the eggs than the kosher dairy. The eggs, yogurt, and butter are closer to the produce than the milk and cream. My scatterbrain did three laps around the store before finding it! So, in closing, very friendly staff, a little weird on the layout, but great selections, fresh everything. read more

However, the goods are on the pricier side, so even though we live close, we choose to shop elsewhere for majority of our grocery trips and only go to sunset for some add on specialty items. Yippee-it is finally here! A truly remarkable grocery shopping experience. Everything is here and if it isn't they will get it for you. Bright, well organized and full of goodies both organic and sinful. Yes, sinful (try the baked on- site apple pie and you will agree. I've shopped at their other locations for years and am so thankful to have one almost in my backyard. They have a coffee station, bakery section and their meats rival the local butchers. If they decide to have seating for their "grill"--my rating will go to 5! They just opened, but I don't expect anything other than service and selection. read more

Been to this store a few times and it stacks up pretty good against their Northbrook location, where I have gone for years. I'll still give Northbrook the overall nod. Service there is a tad better and today I couldn't find a brand of mustard that has been available at NB - though I'll check NB next time to see if they still have it too. Bottomline is that Sunset offers great produce, a fantastic deli and a top notch selection of fresh seafood. Certain staples like detergents, soda pop, breads and condiments are often cheaper elsewhere, but if you want a good selection of quality food for making dinner or lunch, Sunset is the best. read more

Our family is from Florida and Sunset Foods is as close as I can get to Publix supermarkets with a twist. Publix in So Fla is tiered mostly for the Latin community and Sunset is tiered for a mixture of cultures, which I love. The Sunset management are always friendly and approachable and SF employees are extremely professional which I so much appreciate. My favorite is the Deli counter with a wide selection of quick- healthy dinners to take home when on the run. I made a stop at this store for the first time since it was the only grocery store that carried a specific brand of frozen food that I wanted to give a try which no other stores nearby me carried. Overall, I was impressed with their customer service from the time I walked through the doors, browsed the aisles, and at check-out. I like the variety of specialty brands (organic, gluten-free, etc.) and common brands they carry, which made my shopping experience not so overwhelming. If I had to pick one thing that they could improve on, it would be to provide more lights in the parking lot for those that shop in the later in the evening. read more

Sunset foods is very cute with some of the best customer service. You can tell it's what they pride themselves on! They have the best 95% lean ground beef (can't find this anywhere else)! They also have great baked scones and their pineapple upside down cake is also pretty good! Not to mention, you can find pretty much any packaged item you're looking for. I love this store especially since they carry Bell and Evans chicken. Big plus with me. My only gripe is how they grab your cart and unload it for you onto register belt. It's just me, nothing against them. Staff are always very helpful and the checkout people always listen to my stooped jokes. OK, maybe one more tiny gripe.
