Something happened in the Marianos Bannackburn meat department. There must be new management because the best selling buffalo chicken burgers that our family always looked forward to buying are no longer available. We have been loyal customers buying and requesting the buffalo chicken burgers since day one of the store opening. It's a shame that I have to drive to other Mariano's to get this product. One of the things I love about Marianna's is that all the stores have very items. Unfortunately, this is just not the case for the Buffalo burgers. If it is new management I hope they can do better. read more

Mariano's was the shiny new toy when it opened up a couple of years ago. And, quite honestly, it has become my go-to for grocery shopping. I really appreciate the produce department with lots of fresh options. There's a good pre-made take out area that is coming back after the Covid lockdowns. We are fans of the sushi poke bowls personally. While I prefer super fresh sushi, sometimes a poke bowl hits the spot. Get the ones with brown rice - super yum! They do a good job with their ethnic aisles - don't skip the East Indian spices! Mariano's has a massive offer of prepackaged and jarred sauces - they will change your dinner!! The fish department carries wonderful salmon - if you want, they'll even season and steam it while you shop. (Bet you didn't know that!) Just pick it up before you check out. Their gluten free section is pretty good. It's heavier on snacks and things like Goodie Girl cookies. (You'll still find GF options scattered throughout the store, too). I do wish they'd carry Scharr artisanal bread, etc. We aren't fans of some of the GF breads they carry. I'm taking off one star because for a while they had a decent (if unimpressive) GF freezer section. It's dwindled down and now it's hard to know where those items are if they even carry them. read more

If I wanted to be a cashier, I'd fill out an application. No cashiers in the evening. Before the winter storm, the line had over 30 people waiting for the self-checkout . There were 6 employees "supervising " the self checkout, but not one cashier. Kroger has destroyed what used to be a nice store. read more

I have gone here enough times, in good faith, hoping for the best. It has gone downhill like many of its locations. The selection of produce was not that great when I last went (recently). The produce section was very picked over by 4pm, which is a bit early. After people get off of work and go through everything, that makes more sense, but by 4pm, to be out of basic things like basil and most of the non-organic lemons, it is weird. Easily the strangest part of this experience was when I walked through the meat and seafood department. I didn't buy anything at each counter and wasn't planning on it anyway. I've never seen this before, at the height of Covid scarcity and/or its economic fallout, really anytime ever: the seafood counter was bare. There was nothing behind the shelves, and it was dark, though not at the meat counter. There were some free-floating seafood coolers (not sure how to describe it), as usual, which had some $5 and $10 servings of shrimp, among similar house-packaged seafood. (I regret the $5 shrimp I bought from there, actually, because even when I took it home and ate some, much of it was still frozen with other pieces...yuck.) I am shocked that there was no one working there AT ALL. It was dark and vacant, like when you look at barren shelves from Iron Curtain grocery stores in the late 1980s. There isn't a lot of staff training or coordination, because both employees had no idea about what was going on. The second one I talked to thought that the seafood guy was walking off the job early each day, like super early...3pm ish? Why would someone do that? That is not when supermarket "traffic" drops off on a weekday/night. I realize that working with seafood is a specialty and they can't get anyone random off the street for it, but maybe they can figure out why someone is ditching the store and leaving the seafood counter empty? That is very weird - and I am sure they miss out on some sweet margins, since seafood is hardly the cheapest "aisle." I am not sure what is going on here. Even in other supermarkets that had staffing shortages didn't have a completely closed seafood counter! read more

Impressive. When I first heard that this was opening right down the street from the upscale Heinen's grocery store, I was a bit worried about the competition between these stores. However, it only took one visit to this store to realize that the incumbents are the ones who should be the most worried. This Mariano's feels like Jewel mixed with Whole Foods. It is huge with lots of eateries within and tons of upscale grocery item choices. Prices aren't the cheapest but the selection is enormous. So, what makes this Mariano's stand out for me versus other locations? - Extremely convenient spot off the main road. Some other Mariano's seem to settle for vacant spots instead of premium locations. - Huge amount of parking. You'll never have to worry about not finding a spot here. - Everything is meticulously presented. This store is filled with more special displays than normal, with food and spirits all arranged in an easy to peruse fashion. - Tons of selection, you can really find everything from the most common brands to very premium brands in these aisles. You'll almost never have to go elsewhere because you couldn't find your favorite brand. - Tons of eatery options -- provides lots of freshly cooked options at reasonable prices, with premium ingredients. If each iteration of the Mariano's store design continues to improve and provide new and exciting options, this could really change customer expectations for the grocery experience. The emphasis on bringing fresh foods at reasonable prices, in a highly enjoyable experience makes grocery shopping fun again. read more

I'm really upset and let down by this store. I took my elderly parents here and we were left to self-checkout a big order of 50 items, costing around $150, all by ourselves. At the same time, three employees were just hanging out and chatting in a corner. I asked them for help, but they said the cashier was on break and we had to do it all ourselves. One worker, "Marie", wouldn't even find a cashier to help us out. When I asked to talk to the store manager, she told me that "Anthony" wasn't there. The way they treated us was just plain rude. I've never had such a bad time shopping for groceries. This was my first time at Marianos and it will definitely be my last. I've never run into this kind of problem at any other grocery store. read more

Ok so Im not crazy about this store. I tend to go super early to beat the ridiculous long check out lines. They have to traditional prices and specials. There is a starbucks inside which is nice. Tips- So go early in the morning like 7ish or late (closing time) because a lot of stuff gets marked 50% off late in the evening and you can grab it and save huge. I have gotten cookie cakes that are $4.99 vs $9.99 and lots of bakery stuff half off. Even meats and cheeses, you have to look for the 'reduced' sticker. There is a great alcohol selection too and they have great 1/2 lb burgers! read more

This is my new place to shop. Been here weekly for about six weeks and I can't say a bad thing about it! Love the festive Friday music, Edith the conscientious grocery bagger. Plus there is everything from good deals on pizza to a great selection of tasty fish to organic beef cooked to order. And amazing donuts. Everything is pretty affordable, especially with a Mariano's card. Carts are always clean, aisles are stocked, and they have a whole WALL of ice cream flavors. There's a cozy coffee and bar hangout with live music sometimes, spacious aisles, and the bathrooms are always clean. The front cashiers are friendly and the folks stocking shelves don't hesitate to help if you're looking for something special. Lastly the floral department has standard items but also unique things like freesia and bromeliads. Keep it up and I'll keep coming back! read more

This is a little far from me to go here every week, but for a treat, I love coming here for their produce and cheese, among other items. Everything looks so yummy. I've gotten avocados here a few times and they are always big and meaty. I've signed up for their card and get the weekly ad with "free Friday item". Hey it gets me in the store if it's something I've wanted to try but don't want to buy. The store could use some work. It's very big and set up kind of confusing if you are shopping aisle by aisle. You get produce, then have to backtrack for bakery, prepped foods, cheeses, olives... then back again it's liquor, sundries, then the regular aisles. Meh. But they get me in with the choices of produce and other fresh items. read more

All the glory from the new store opening is gone. Now, this is just another mediocre grocery store. Want to grab a quick lunch off the hot bar or salad bar, no problem. But now you have to go wait in the regular grocery store line because there is never anyone working at the "food court" registers. Want a beer from their bar ? Hopefully you have long arms and can reach the tap or refrigerator yourself, because nobody is ever working at the bar. This is a good place to go for a free lunch. You can go to the hot bar, fill up a plate, sit in the cafe, eat it and leave without paying because you will never see an employee. This place reminds me why I am loyal to Sunset. read more

I'm done with this Mariano's. It is not acceptable to have a large cart full of groceries just to find out that there are no cashiers. Self service only. This has happened multiple times on multiple days at different hours of the day. I'm not sure if it is the manager trying to extend margins or if he can't get people to work there. Probably both. It's not the work that bothers me, it is that those self service lanes are not meant for a cart load of stuff. If you can't find people to work, buy more appropriate self service lanes. I know they exist. Replace half of the never used full service lanes. Only go here if you have small quantity purchases. read more

A couple months ago I would have given a much higher review. They have good stuff often at reasonable prices and the store is appealing. Problem: lately they've fallen prey to some evil 'marketing genius' who has decided to win customers through deceptive pricing practices. You see signs advertising low prices and load up your cart. Then you get to the register and are told that, despite having a Mariano's card, those prices don't apply to you because you didn't download their 'digital coupon' before you came. So if you're the type who enjoys reading the fine print on every price label or who likes doing download homework before shopping, then I recommend Mariano's. Otherwise, go someplace like Heinin's or Jewel or Sunset where the prices are not deceptive. read more

So I'm not against the giant Mariano's that opened in my neighborhood but also have to say they fall flat. Most recently all fresh produce and fruit I bought was on sale and now I know why (#theyneverhavesales). They looked great but tasted mealy and uneatable. Blueberries on sale tasted and dumped garbage; avocados same I was excited to see the 99¢ sale on both items but these obviously came on from a vendor effected by recent freezes but does Mariano's care about quality I honesty do think they do. Constantly have had freshness issues since they opened and when items are on sale which is rare is something I have to throw out. they go rotten or taste horrible. It's a large impressive store but not meeting standards and Ive lost respect with this and other store every visit. They overcharge for many items and their deli section and ready to eat items just are average and most often NOT GOOD!! read more

The store has a convenient location which has been my go-to store as of now. I went here a lot of times and so far, I never had an awful experience. The store has a friendly staff. It is always clean and organized. Last time I went here, there was a lot of people and social distancing is still observed. What I like about the store is their prepared meals. Yes, they got a nice selection of produce, meat, seafoods and all of it but their prepared foods were amazing. Foods are delicious and it is also convenient. I love the sushi and I always buy each time I got to the store. Also, there was a sale on chocolates like hershey's and reese's in front of the flower section, I thought it was expired or something but it was not and I happily ate it on the way home, just sayin and I got big pack of each for 4$, a pretty good deal. read more

The shiny newness is already starting to wear off and this place is beginning to show a few cracks. I don't have much time to cook, so I rely on prepared food from places like Mariano's to help with meal planning. If I'm in the area, I'll stop here and hope they have their hot bar up and running with fresh food (at dinner time), but lately it's been a total fail. Not sure what's going on, but the food looks like it's been sitting for a really long time. Tonight at dinner time I stopped by the BBQ station for some pulled pork. I typically prefer to get this at the other Mariano's by my house in Northbrook, but I needed Apricot flavored LaCroix, which they only have at this location. There was nothing in the BBQ bar so I asked behind the counter for the meat. It took three people to figure out how to actually get it in the container and weighed. I was honestly scared to eat it and it didn't taste the same as the other location, so I'll never do that again. Scored my Apricot LaCroix for $4 (cheaper than Jewel), but left unsatisfied. Another note, is that this location has the worst check out. There is always some sort of drama with not enough cashiers or some of them just seem really unhappy to be there. Also, make sure to check the dates on meat sales. I picked up some small smokey wieners on sale for a recipe, and I got them home and the date was one day expired. I ended up throwing them away, because it wasn't worth the risk. Positives = Starbucks and great bakery. Oh, and the Apricot LaCroix. Otherwise, I'll continue to shop my other Mariano's. read more

So at first, I was concerned that it might be a little lame to write my 500th review about a Grocery Store. And then, I remembered that I really love grocery stores and have been consistently lamenting my lack of good, nearby grocery stores ever since moving to the area a year ago. And that I will talk about this to anyone who will listen. So it's an important review to me. Plus - I'm first!! Well, Mariano's apparently listened, because they just opened up this fabulous new store in Bannockburn! Hooray!! It's really close to the Heinen that's at Waukegan and 22 - Mariano's is on the east side of Waukegan, just north of 22. And frankly, I don't know that Heinen can really survive this, because Mariano's is just so much better. The selection, the prices - it's all just fabulous. The produce in particular was great - both regular and organic. Juice bar, lots of prepared foods, wonderful meat & fish counters, etc. There's even a Starbucks located inside And while it looked super crowded from the parking lot and felt pretty crowded while I was shopping, there were virtually no lines at the checkout. The checkout was my only minor gripe, and I won't hold it against them, as it was opening weekend. I asked for paper and she put all of my groceries (a full weekly trip with canned goods, dairy, produce, meat, etc) into 2 bags. They were double bagged, which I appreciated. But I'm by myself and pregnant - the bags were far too heavy for me to lift out of my own cart and get into my car. Thankfully a different employee saw me struggling in the parking lot and assisted before I had to start unpacking the bags into my trunk. So that employee's kindness kind of cancelled out the stupidity of the cashier who bagged them to begin with. Also, she didn't give me any of the free reusable bags that they were handing out for opening weekend, but I don't really need more bags, so I didn't make a fuss. Mostly, I am really glad to have this Mariano's here. read more

This is my first time shopping at any Mariano's. I know two people who rave about their Mariano's. One lives is in the south suburbs and the other in the sort of west suburbs. I know there is a Mariano's in Vernon Hills, but it isn't convenient for me. I shop at Sunset Foods (love their personalized help) Heinen's and Whole Foods. I went during their first week and I was amazed, bedazzled and became a true convert to them. I now join the other two people I personally know who are crazy about Mariano's. They just couldn't ever adequately explain to me this amazing wonderland store. Everything and anything is there to fill your heart's content on food. I have been going almost daily. A friend of mine who I work out with told me that between her shopping on QVC and Mariano's, her husband told her they are going to go broke. Can I say more? Since it's opening and my almost daily visits, I really think the only way to truly describe this store is by going in it. I'll still shop at Whole Foods, Heinens (if it survives) and Sunset Foods. But if I'm going only for an experience and sometimes better prices, Mariano's is a winner. read more

This Mariano's is seriously the best in the area. I'll drive out of my way any day of the week to pop in here for groceries. The produce selection and quality far exceeds my expectations every time (especially when compared to other Mariano's in the NW burbs). The staff always goes above and beyond when I ask if they carry random products that I need for my plant based recipes and they always greet me with a smile. Their fresh juice counter is also A MUST stop whenever you're needing a quick pick me up in the morning, or they have a Starbucks if juicing just isn't your thing. This is also probably one of the very few grocery stores in the area that actually carry the majority of the items that I need without costing an arm and a leg. read more

New store / Gluten-Free review -- My wife and I arrived at the new Mariano's in Bannockburn shortly after noon on the first Saturday of business -- a rainy October one. The parking lot was so packed, there was someone directing traffic. We came more to get green smoothies, a few items, and check out the new place, than do a full shopping trip. This Mariano's is bigger than the Vernon Hills store we usually frequent and appears at least as big as the one in Northbrook on Dundee Road. It's located between a Heinen's in Bannockburn and the Sunset in Lake Forest, with another Heinen's a bit further up the road in Lake Bluff, a newly remodeled Jewel and a Whole Foods further down the road in Deerfield. There's also a Jewel further northeast near downtown Lake Forest. Mariano's appears to be declaring a competitive war amid these other grocers. When Dominick's went out of business, Marianos had the opportunity to take over the Bannockburn store where Heinen's now sits, but chose not to at that time. It seems unlikely that the area can support all of these stores. For those that don't know, Mariano's original mission was to combine the best of a Whole Foods (organics, healthful and upsca) with Roundy's (value prices) and bulk goods (like Costco's). Kroger's now owns Mariano's and supposedly they want to keep the same vision without making wholesale changes. I guess we'll see about that. AFAIK, this is the first store built since Kroger took over and has it's stamp on the whole thing. Similar to other Marianos's, this one has a live pianist at the front of the store, a Starbucks counter, wine (and beer) bar like Heinen's does, but larger and with the eating area integrated; however, they didn't help unload our cart for us the way Sunset does at the check-out line. they also have a custom sandwich counter, pizza counter, sushi counter, organic salad bar, and hot bar for eating in or to go. Unfortunately, none of the hot bar items had ingredients labels, so it's impossible to tell if items are GF or not. After we stopped at the smoothie bar, my wife's drink had a piece of paper in it. It was probably a label left on one of the pieces of fruit that went in the blender. We were able to find a floor manager quickly and have the matter resolved. New employees huh?... As far as the main part of the store, larger doesn't necessarily mean more. I saw so many places where multiple shelf spots were taken up with the same product. Especially with Kroger brand products. Maybe this is because the store is new and more varied products will be coming, but this is how it is for now. They could do a lot better with stocking GF products. There is one section in Aisle 19 that has a limited selection of mostly pasta, shelf stable baked goods, some cereals and some other items. But much of the rest of the GF products are scattered around the store with the various items they classify as, including items like other cereals in the cereal aisle. So if you want a couple varieties of cereal, you have to go to two places to get both. I asked where the GF toaster waffles are and found they have none at all -- not even the plain kind. I asked for the GF beers are and they had only one -- Two Brothers Prairie Path. I didn't see any GF products that I couldn't get anywhere else. It appears little effort was put into stocking GF items. The only way they'll learn to stock these type of items is if you call ahead and ask them if they have it, before you make the trip there or put in a request at the service desk while you're there. Unfortunately, I've put in requests for products at other Mariano's, which have met with mixed results. Apparently requests have to go through an approval board. Being that the store is so close to a Sunset (they shine with personal service/requests), we'll see if this policy will change. We will also see, if they can do better with getting and organizing more GF products. read more

July 4th weekend .. not enough staff, lines 4-5 people and carts deep, some check out lines with baggers, most without! Waited 20 minutes (my husband and I in our 70's), with two 30-somethings behind us complaining. After 20 minutes when we were reaching "second in line", store clerk came out to open lane to our right and who did she motion over ... you guessed it .. the two 30-somethings behind us who had waited all of 5 minutes! What poor management and poor training!! (I worked at Jewel over 40 years ago and, when the store was packed, my manager and I could clear the crowd in ten minutes with her checking and me taking cash or credit cards ... I guess those were "the good old days" when customer service was important. Sorry, Mariano's ... won't be back! read more

This place used to be great, not so much anymore. As a family that eats a ton of fresh produce, it is such a disappointment to buy loads of fruits and vegetables only for them to go bad within 2 days. I bought 4 gala apples from here on Saturday, cut them open and they are all rotten inside (but look great on the outside!). If you mainly shop for chips, pasta, and canned goods, you'll be fine to shop here. If you like fresh produce, meats, and dairy, go to Heinen's. Plus, the checkout lines are always insanely long. You'd think on the weekends they would have a few more lanes open.....it's usually 3 lanes for at least 50 customers. Crazy! read more

I am so frustrated with this store. Today I wanted to buy a pound of skirt steak from the meat counter. The young man (early 20s?) at the counter placed one of 3 pieces from the case on to the scale and said he thought it was a little over. It weighed 1.6 lbs. He told me he's not allowed to cut a piece and I would have to buy the whole piece. When I asked why, he said the butcher told him it was because they don't get skirt steak very often. I had never heard of that before, so instead of trying to argue with him, I went to the service desk where another, even younger person tried to help me by telling me that made sense to him, but he would call a manager. When manager arrived he said he'd cut it for me. He was quite a bit faster on his feet than I am, and when I arrived at the meat counter the 2 employees were discussing the situation. The manager had him put the piece on the scale and told him to cut it in half!! I interjected that he would need to cut 1/3 off and they both agreed. Since the cutting was done out of my eyesight, I didn't see what he did. The piece he placed on the scale was 1.3 lbs - way more than I wanted, but I bought it anyway. I rarely shop at Mariano's anymore - the quality is so deteriorated from when they arrived in Chicagoland. The coffee I wanted to buy (whole bean Starbucks Italian roast) was on the bottom shelf, buried all the way in the back. I can no longer crawl on the floor to reach what should have been faced, so I could not buy it. Finally, of the 2 checkout lines that were open, 1 of them washed her conveyer belt as 5 people lined up behind her. I think that cracked me and it'll be a very long time until I go back there. Here's what I'm having an issue with at this store....hot bar is great, hit it a little later for hot food vs cold, the food when put out around 10 is not hot but here's what's the issue....there's never fresh water at the drink station. Most of these stores have a nice dispenser maybe with cucumbers in the water. Not here. There's two pitchers that are frequently empty. Go stand in line at Starbucks and hope for a cup of water. Okay, after that's off my chest...the hot bar is better than Northbrook! By far! read more

Previously I gave this store a 2 star rating. The main reason was that there were no self-checkout or express lanes. If you had just a few items you had to wait 5 to 10 minutes to check out as they never had enough people working. They installed self checkout Lanes in two locations of the store. It makes all the difference in the world. read more

Be careful and check your receipt. On two recent occasions there have been mistakes for example kiwis advertised at $2.99 for a container and rung up at $4.99. They claim to have certain products like Gevalia mocha flavored coffee which is why I went a second time, but none was to be had. I'm happy to patronize Heinens. read more
