I work in a restaurant in BARRINGTON and unfortunately this is the only Jewel there if I need something. At least the last four times when in picked up cheap chicken for the crew the older gentleman behind the deli counter always complains I buy too much chicken, usually three bags, and he grumbles and makes sarcastic remarks about me under his breath. His customer service is terrible. Recently I went to pick up one dollar hotdogs on Saturday for the crew before work and asked a different gentleman behind the counter where the hotdogs were and he didn't speak English, so since I'm bilingual, I asked him in Spanish he then directed me to the round hot table in the isle. There was one hotdog. I asked if there will be more coming since I needed about eight and he said he can make them in about 15 to 20 mins. I don't understand why one person complains about selling too much chicken on CHEAP CHICKEN MONDAY and another employee is totally unprepared on another day there is a deal on something as simple as hotdogs. read more

This Jewel is good for night owls! I gotta have a store with extended hours like this one. They close at midnight. When shopping for things like cereal or canned goods, be mindful of the expiration dates. I didn't see anything that had expired, but a few items were close to the "USE BY" date. read more

This store always has a good selection of items. While it's a little more out of my way, I go there for one reason: Jo Anne. She's an amazing employee and always goes out of her way to make my family feel special and valued. She's a pleasure and always makes my day. Bought coconut crusted cod at the Lake Zurich store and when we went to make it the next day, realized from the smell (through the plastic wrap) that it was CLEARLY past it's prime (despite having a sell by date 4 days later). This Jewel is neat, organized, and pleasant, with ample parking. I tend to visit in the mornings when, unfortunately, there aren't very many cashier lanes open. Expect to wait in line a bit, depending on how busy it is. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a long time. I would never be shopping at this Jewel but for the fact that Dominick's is no longer an option and it's close to my house. Never enough cashier lines open has been a consistent problem for many years but lately it's just an annoying lack of common inventory and poor customer service. This Jewel was out of split peas for at least a month. Really? Not some exotic foo-foo vegetable from the far east. Green/yellow split peas. Found them at Heinen's easily. Today, no ground pork nor a butcher on duty to grind some for me. No shitake mushrooms either. There went that recipe. Think this Jewel has been resting on it's laurels because of it's in-town Barrington location and little competition since Dominick's closed. I may still run in for a specific item (not the ones mentioned above of course) but for big shopping, will drive extra distance to Mariano's which is much more pleasant shopping experience anyway. read more

I for one love this Jewel. Especially compared to the Jewel stores in the City. There is absolutely no comparison. I've always found the staff here to be friendly, efficient and the store is clean and devoid of riff raff. The produce is much fresher out here, and the aisles more neatly displayed. I also love their organic and ethnic aisle. I've come to the point that I no longer shop the Jewel stores in the city, I'd rather drive to a nearby suburb where the service is better, the stores are cleaner and the taxes cheaper. I can also avoid having some deadbeat scare me by following my son and I out of the store. read more

I'm in here most days and I guess I, too, find it "typical" - although this location has a decent "ethnic"/organic foods aisle, a pretty good floral section, cosmetics I haven't found at other Jewel stores, and superior produce, bakery and meat stock. Also look for good (two for one, three for two) deals on cigarettes and decent table wine on sale. They've begun to stock some pretty good craft beers, which I like to think is due to my suggestion. I've found service to be decent, but then I'm a big fan of the self-checkout. Even the TCF employees are nice - no mean feat. Look for Janet H., a swell dame and my former lunchlady, if you opt for humanoid checkout. read more

I decided to give this Jewel a try during the Pandemic to see if it was more hygienic than the one in Buffalo Grove. Kudos for the abundance of sanitizing wipes to wipe down your cart. However, I had such a bad experience at the deli counter. After placing my order for cheese, the man working the counter put the wrapped cheese right up to his nose and said it smelled good. Even though he was wearing a mask and the cheese didn't make contact with his masked face, his action made me extremely uncomfortable. I was flabbergasted and speechless to say the least. Why an employee working at a food counter do something so disgusting is beyond me. Pandemic or not, it is just plain gross and unsanitary. I don't know if he was being an obnoxious a--hole or if he was just stupid. Either way, I don't think I'll be visiting this location any longer. I should have spoken to a manager, but I guess I just didn't want to get this idiot into trouble. I ended up leaving the cheese with the cashier and told her I had changed my mind. This is a great Jewel in down town Barrington until I saw a couple with their little doggie in front of me at the checkout.. NO!!! I don't want to do my grocery shopping with your dog.. Please stop your inconsiderate ways of having your poochie in your arms or climbing on you while in the deli.. leave your doggie at home. Lost that loving feeling for the Jewel. read more

This place has gone downhill in a hurry. Let's start with the deli department can't slice meat to save there life. Told the lady what I wanted and didn't get it and the slices are so thick it's a joke told them thin but apparently they stopped listening to the customer. The bread they normally have on the shelf was not there also none in the back either. The milk I purchased had expired already not to mention that the employees responsibility is to pull expired product from the shelf's, but this is not getting done either. So based on this I don't plan to return to pay good money for bad product and horrible customer service. read more

So, while the state is opening up, there are many of us at high risk if we get covid-19 and on limited incomes. What does Osco in its wisdom decide? As of June 1,2020 they are charging $8 to deliver prescriptions. This is greedy and ridiculous. I do not want to have to enter a grocery and put myself at risk to get my medications and I cannot afford repeated $8 charges since my meds refill monthly and at different times of the month. Thus, it will be BYE BYE OSCO and hello Walgreens with their drive thru window. No charge there, no exposures, no covid-19. read more

I have had my up and downs with Jewel and Dominicks over the years, really wish we had a small deli in the area with all the basics. I have been to several Jewel stores in the past this one has great hours and a decent selection of meats, however I miss having someone help you when you are in a hurry, never someone here to help, these are the things I miss with the small familia owned shops. read more

Yes, they have groceries. But, what is it with Barrington that nothing ever changes or gets updated? This Jewel hasn't been updated since 1980 (unless you count the big aisle that has the ethnic/health food section) and it really is starting to look tired. Have you been to the new Jewel on 62 across from the Butera? Now, that's the caliber of Jewel we should have in Barrington. I think they should tear it down and start over. Or, better yet, open a Whole Foods around here and I'll never go back. read more

I can't say so much for the others that work there because I either haven't been in contact with them enough or because I refuse to put their names up but I've run into a few rude employees at this location. I hate this jewel. Every time we grocery shop here the fruit and vegetables are always rotten. The ladies behind the deli counter gossip about you right behind the counter when you are in clear listening distance and not to mention it's always is super busy around 3pm and there are never enough lines open! This Jewel stinks! I shop here because I live in the village and can't always make it to my preferred grocery stores. There is never anyone available to help at the fish/meat counter. The produce is usually of poor quality. Prices are too high, probably due to the lack of competition. The service stinks. They seem to hire teens who don't give a damn and "special needs" people who are really not up to the task of bagging groceries. Please somebody open a competing grocery store. This Jewel has the Best Bake Shop of all Jewels Food Stores! Their coffee cakes taste amazingly different all the other Jewels. Amanda, the Bake Shop Department Manager said she believes it's because she had the Best Bakers Ever and on top of that has had then all specially trained. Just moved to the area. I went to this jewel for the first time I did not know where anything was. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to help me find everything I needed. This weekend I had a bridal shower for my daughter. I looked around at several Florist for centerpieces and they wanted over 75 dollars a piece for small arrangements really small. I went to the jewel and their associate Cheryl discussed with me different types of arrangements that she could do for me. I decided to let her just go with what she thought. When I went to pick them up I was amazed. They took my breath away. I spent under 100 dollars and each one looked like it cost 100 a piece . I received 6 for that price. Everyone at the shower kept asking which local florists I got them at. I will always get my flowers from that location and Cheryl. read more

Time for Barrington to get a Whole Foods or Sunset Foods with quaIity food, customer service and aesthetics just like their neighboring towns have. Why not have a grocery store consistent with the rest of the village? The majority of store owners in the village are conscientious about aesthetics and good customer service. It would be nice if Jewel would take their cue. They are big on cluttering the store front sidewalk piled 15 feet high with outdoor goods which is both an eyesore and a safety issue. Training the cashiers to say thank you consistently is an inexpensive, good place to start with improving customer service. Not sure where they got the idea that a makeover with super giant font signs, super bright lights, the same plain white tile and jacked up air conditioning was an appealing food shopping experience. read more

This is the best customer service story of all time! I mean bad customer service! I ran in to pick up groceries and prescriptions and told the young man to put the roasts in a plastic bag before putting them in my own bag. Guess what he didn't! Blood on everything i bought..... I called as soon as I found the mess and the manager said to bring everything back they would replace the items. I have time to spend another hour shopping for food? I did go back the next day as I was passing past the store and they refunded the cost of the food I had to throw out but it seems pretty simple that red meat gets on everything. read more

The worst grocery store I've been in. It's the closest store to my home so I end up there on occasion and always come away angry w/myself for going there again. The prices are at least double those at Caputos on Rand Rd in Palatine-across the board=deli--vegetables-dairy= tip=always check the dates on everything-if its not expired yet, it will be soon-I think they get a deal on buying food close to the expiration date. I can't walk anywhere near the fish dept=the entire area reaks-or it reaks of bleach-another bad sign for fish. And the kicker is that 95% of the time I've been overcharged for something, which is another trip back/never so much as a "we're sorry" for your inconvenience/Jewels policy of refunding the entire price if you've been charged incorrectly doesn't apply to this store//and thru all of this the service/I can't even call it service-there is no customer service/Jewel needs to be replaced with a company that cares about quality and how to treat its customers=I don't see how someone in a wheelchair could get thru those doors. read more
