The bakery at West Galena Jewel is horrible. We have bought 2 birthday cakes and twice I had to call and complain. The first was in June for a soccer themed cake. By the time we got the cake home the frosting was falling off the cake! Called the manager and he said it was probably due to the cake being warm when frosted. The second cake was a music themed cake last week. 1/4 sheet cake - $28! The frosting and decorating looks like a child did it. The music print in the center of the cake said "Happy Birthday". So when they added the words "Happy Birthday Joshua" they wrote right over the printed text! Then they squeezed it all together on the bottom of the cake - you could not even read it! Once again I called complain. The bakery manager told me that she was surprised to hear this as the person that did the cake was her best decorator. That's not saying much. Went to to the store with a photo to show the bakery manager. She looked at the cake and actually said that she saw nothing wrong with the cake! I was stunned. I explained to her why it was bad. She acted like she could care less and authorized a refund and walked away. We will not be going back. Non-talented bakery staff (including the manager) who also care less about the customer. read more

I purchase around 30% of our groceries from Jewel-Osco. I must admit it is usually product they have in their ad paper. I am a big fan of Cheap Chicken Monday, so this prompted me to try a couple other items. I tried both flavors of wings and just today their fish special. All I can say is DON'T! The wings are bad and the fish was awful. The fish pieces were small and might have tasted okay if the breading wasn't so thick, chewy/gummy/soggy and lacking flavor. There was no tarter sauce or lemon wedges offered. My family wouldn't eat it. I have never left a Yelp review before, but after today's experience I would feel guilty if I did not warn my friends and neighbors to take a "Hard Pass" on this fish. read more

The Jewel on Eola Rd and N Aurora has very rude Customer Service Employees and cashiers! They act as if a return is an inconvenience and if you pull a coupon sticker off of something that's a manager special they say in a very rude tone you're not supposed to take this off it's a package... Then today I purchased the 5.99 chicken special and the pieces of the chicken were as small as a pigeon... What a rip off store! And prices are way higher than Miejer! read more

The management is just no existent! Had an online order that was so badly put to there it got almost 10 substitutes and missing 3 items! I used to hate Jewel stores, because it's so overpriced compared to other stores. I do the bulk of my grocery shopping at Aldi, and any items I was unable to purchase at Aldi I tend to go to Woodman's (or in the past, Meijer). Sometimes Woodman's is just too big when all you need are two or three items. Dannon Oikos Greek yogurt is usually on sale, and it's one of my weekly grocery staples that I can't get at Aldi. Sometimes canned soup, pasta sauce, and pasta make it into my shopping cart as well. This store always smells so good from the bakery. I'm a fan of the pistachio muffins, and the 8,000 calorie whoopie pies (the sugar cookie ones are to die for!). The liquor department is small but has never let me down when I needed some beer or wine for a party. There's a separate checkout lane which expedites smaller purchases. I also like the self check-outs at the other end of the store. The deli is often all out of rotisserie chickens, another quick convenience item that I like. The parking lot is small (for a grocery store this size), so it gets a little hectic like you're playing a game of chicken with the pedestrians and other drivers. I would not do all of my grocery shopping here, because not everything is on sale all the time, and the regular prices on some items are high compared to other grocery stores. But it's quick, convenient, and clean, so I can't be too disappointed. read more

I've been going to this location for many, many years. It's convenient and usually has most of what I need. While I have always found most of the workers there pleasant and helpful, I finally have reached peak irritation at the folks behind the meat/fish counter. Never once do they smile; they can barely eke out the words "can I help you" and almost never say thank you even if I say it first...which I do. The most surly irascible people!!! read more

So I am reviewing a place that I recently quit a month or so ago, from working there 8 years. Let me tell you...this store is small. But that's why we have so many regulars. They would rather come to our store than humongous Super Walmart and Woodmans that are nearby. And you might ask why did Erin S. say the staff isn't happy?...well let me be honest. Most people are miserable working at the store. Lets just say it really DOES have something to do with most of the management. I don't normally write poor reviews but I was disappointed in Jewel today. I called to let them know that the last two times I purchased Oberweis milk from this store it was spoiled even though the date on the bottle had not even come close to being expired. I was only calling to let them know so that they could look into it. I was trying to be helpful. The man who answered, Randy, hurried me off the phone and totally brushed off my concern. He didn't ask any questions or apologize. All he said was "ok, thanks" and hung up. Oberweis milk isn't cheap, it would have been nice it he would have at least pretended to care. read more

Well Jewel, you pulled the red carpet right out from underneath your customers. Taking out the self-check really bothered me today. I usually stop in for a few items and normally zip right out with the self check. Today I waiting longer in the express lane than any other time I visited. I asked the cashier and they said they took them out. I said it was a step backwards, she said, no, they were causing problems. I am very disappointed with jewel. The express lanes were understaffed (only 1 working with 3 closed windows). The Self check always had 4 lanes open. So either put them back or staff your lanes. I will be cutting back on my visits to Jewel since Woodmans still has their self check and much lower prices. read more

I do not like this store. I have no issues with Jewel stores in general, just this one. It needs a management overhaul. I stopped shopping there, namely because of sour employees, a couple of incompetent clods (one clerk, when I wanted to pay for my $40. order with a $100 bill, told me to go to the courtesy desk to break it. ) and the incident, etched in my mind forever. I am on the wrong side of 50, but they still want ID to buy a six pack of beer. I handed it over to an old hag of a clerk who peered at my license, held it up to the light, peered at it again, turned it from side to side, held it up to the light again then peered at me. Must have taken five minutes and I expect the old bag would have ordered a strip search if only she had the authority. I felt like a criminal, like I had a phony drivers license or something. I complained to corporate. They opened a case and it went up the chain. Seems the manager can create policy like that. Fine, I said, but what about the way I was treated. It is not OK to treat the customers like criminals, especially since I knew that clerk. I wanted them to understand I felt badly used. They should have said sorry. Oh my Lord. Today was the last straw. I am relatively new to Aurora. Not a ton of great grocery store shopping options. I have now had several occasions where the food I bought had old expiration dates. Today, I returned an expensive cheese that had a July expiration date. It was almost two months past the expiration date!!! My bad for not looking, but it shouldn't even be on their shelves! I decided to pick up a few things while I was there. Brought a fresh loaf of bread to a staffer to have it sliced for me, and he put his bare hands on the bread! No gloves! I called him out, and left without the bread. As I went to leave the store, I watched a guy with no shirt checking out...and no one bothered to ask him to go put on a shirt before he shopped??? And then guess what? When I got home, the prepared foods pasta I bought was past the expiration date. Again, my bad for not looking, but it shouldn't have been on the shelf!!! I'm sorry for being so harsh, but this place is truly disgusting. I will never, ever shop there again. PS - I threw the pasta away.
