With three younger kids, finding somewhere that they enjoy and that the adults also appreciate can sometimes be a challenge. On this visit, my cousin's wife recommended Surfside Sandwich Shoppe, so we met her and her two kids there and also invited some friends who live on the island. The first challenge was actually finding the place. Even with GPS, it's surprisingly easy to drive past because it's difficult to see until you're almost directly alongside it. Parking was also very limited and a little challenging with our group. Inside, most of the space is occupied by the kitchen and bar, while the outdoor seating area is considerably larger. The outdoor area worked well for the kids, with a chalkboard and some large stackable toys to keep them occupied. I ordered the Cuban Press, while the kids went with burgers. They also have a pretty extensive drink menu. We tried the margaritas, which were okay, although smaller than I expected. Unfortunately, the food took a very long time to come out, and a couple of things got lost along the way. They forgot our mozzarella and marinara appetizer as well as the broccoli salad I had ordered as my side. My Cuban Press was very good, although it's not a traditional Cuban sandwich since they use pulled pork. Authentic or not, I enjoyed the sandwich and the accompanying sauce. The kids were happy with their burgers as well. I didn't get a chance to try the shrimp bisque, but others in our group had it and reported that it was excellent. Overall, there were things we liked, particularly my sandwich and the outdoor area for the kids, but the very long food wait and forgotten items made the experience less enjoyable than it could have been. With a larger group of kids, it also wasn't necessarily the easiest place for us. We might come back without the kids and sit inside to enjoy the bar, or I'd consider grabbing a sandwich to-go in the future. The Cuban was good enough that I'd certainly eat it again.

The club pathetically had very little meat and you could take 2-3 simple bites of each and you're done. The broccoli soup come to find out wasnt part of the McAlisters Club so I got charged for that. Plus, my wife's salad was considered premium although offered as the choose 2...so extra and more extra...so for $40 we probably were better off going elsewhere.

Ahh yes, Jersey Mike's Subs... as mentioned in earlier reviews, I've always had a soft spot for this establishment. Back in my university days, I actually managed one of these fine sandwich institutions. A younger Matt Simmons, slicing meats with the precision of a Formula One pit crew member. On this particular afternoon, we found ourselves absolutely starving. I'm talking proper hunger. The kind where your stomach starts negotiating with itself. The morning's intake consisted of one lonely piece of buttered toast, which quite frankly felt insulting by lunchtime. Mission objectives were clear: 1. Acquire beach supplies. 2. Acquire sunshine. 3. Acquire sustenance. The answer?Two Number 9s. The superior sandwich. Order placed online with military precision, pickup was swift and painless, and before long our most valuable asset at the time was riding shotgun wrapped neatly in paper and anticipation. Upon walking in, the place had that classic Jersey Mike's atmosphere I've oddly grown nostalgic for over the years. Cool air blasting after the coastal heat outside, smell of fresh bread and sliced meats hanging in the air, the sound of the slicer humming away behind the counter like a well-oiled machine. Now let's discuss the Number 9. Absolutely sensational. Every bite delivered exactly what you want from Jersey Mike's. The balance of meats, the provolone, the freshness of the toppings... and then there's Mike's Way. Good heavens. Oil and vinegar cascading through the sandwich like some sort of divine coastal blessing. It's less of a topping style and more of an out of body experience.
