This means I can now say who made them best, and more importantly, why. The interesting thing is, I didn't think the pastel de nata here were particularly great, on any dimension - fairly flimsy, doughy crust, with a pudding-like, drippy filling that was too sweet and not quite eggy enough. Don't get me wrong, I'd still eat them any time someone offered, they were still tasty, you just have a ton of options nearby, some of them notably better than the ones here. I also tried one of their fancy-looking cookies, which definitely looked fancier than it tasted. Was just a cookie. Dessert-wise I was unimpressed. They were also always fairly busy, which made ordering feel a bit rushed. So why am I still giving this bakery 5 stars, and why did I come back here a couple more times, including to get food to-go the morning we left, to get food to take on the plane with us? For exactly one reason, and it's a weird one: oddly enough, the samosas here are the best samosas I've ever had, and by a wide margin. You'd think the best samosas ever would come from an Indian restaurant or bakery, but nope, they're here. The other small savory food items we tried were also pretty good, but the samosas are the juiciest, meatiest, most perfectly bursting with spices samosas I've had. Who knew? They also had pretty solid espresso and pretty solid free-squeezed orange juice, but those aren't hard to find in Portugal (I miss seeing inexpensive fresh squeezed OJ all over the city... especially *truly* fresh squeezed, to order, from whole oranges. Portuguese OJ definitely was the best. Though obviously not *better* than other places you can get the same thing around - probably indeed the same oranges. Definitely better than anywhere you can get fresh OJ for a few bucks in the US, though, if you can find such a place. :p)

I can't tell…read moreyou how right the foodie's videos were about the original place where the pastel de nata originated. Actually it was better than the claims! I "ubered" out to Belem from my hotel. There was a small line up but it moved quickly. Cute and quaint place in blue and white. We walked across the street to a park to enjoy them. The pastry was so flaky that it flaked off very easily. The pigeons were aware of this and stood guard for any fallen morsels. The custard was so smooth and creamy and you could see the heat bubbles! I may have to go back for more!

A Lisbon Must-Do for Pastéis, Coffee & a Little Old-World Charm…read more First trip to Lisbon = Pastéis de Belém had to be on the itinerary! I had read up on the famous bakery before our visit and knew that arriving early was key. So we did -- and I'm very glad we did because this place gets busy FAST! There was a little confusion at first about which entrance to use and where to line up for a table, especially with people coming through different doors. Thankfully, we only waited about 5-10 minutes, which really wasn't bad at all. We weren't lucky enough to be seated in the beautiful old section of the café, but we did get to wander through it -- and wow! The historic rooms are incredibly charming, with gorgeous old-world details that make the whole experience feel like a little step back in time. We were seated instead in the much larger, newer dining hall. Our waiter was friendly, although definitely a little stern-ish, and after scanning the QR menu, we took a few minutes to decide what we wanted. Our waitress came by, took our order and quickly disappeared into the sea of tables. And honestly, I get it -- this place was HUSTLING! Of course, we ordered the famous Pastéis de Belém because... well, when in Lisbon! We also added a Torte de Chocolate because apparently one pastry each wasn't going to cut it, plus a couple of lattes. I actually loved that the menu included photos -- sometimes you just need to see the pastry before committing! Our order arrived surprisingly quickly, and the pastéis were delicious. The pastry was flaky, the custard was creamy and they absolutely hit the spot. I had expected them to arrive warm, though, and ours weren't, so I'm not sure how fresh from the oven they were. Still delicious nonetheless. The lattes were hot, tasty and served in pretty little glasses -- always a nice touch. One thing I did notice was that the tables, chairs and menus could have used a little more attention in the cleanliness department. That said, considering the sheer volume of people moving through this place every day, it's easy to understand how quickly things can get a little messy. Before leaving, we took another stroll through the historic portion of the bakery and café, which was definitely worth a look. There's so much character and history tucked into those rooms. And by the time we walked out? The line was already stretching outside! If sitting down isn't your thing, there's also a quick-order counter where you can grab your pastéis and keep exploring Lisbon. So, would I stop here again? Absolutely. Is it a leisurely, quiet café experience? Definitely not. It's busy, bustling and very much a Lisbon institution. But experiencing the history, seeing the beautiful old bakery, sipping a latte and eating one of these iconic Portuguese pastries is part of the fun. Put it on your Lisbon itinerary -- just go early, embrace the crowds, and save room for pastries!

We found Ground Burger nearby and I have to say, I'm glad we did! This was one of the best burgers I've ever had, anywhere. I got the Ground Burger which came with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and the GB sauce. The beef was amazing, all the toppings were so well balanced, and the brioche bun was excellent. Whatever was in the sauce really added a lot to it too. The fries had a nice little addition of rosemary which complemented them nicely. While these burgers are expensive, they're up there with the best burger I've had. So I think it's definitely worth it!

After having a drink we figured that we should get some food in our systems before heading to Museo Calouste Gulbenkian. In route to the museum we came across Ground Burguer. Being that we had been eating mainly Portuguese food for the past 2.5 weeks (which was absolutely delicious), we were stoked to find an American themed burger joint. When we walked in we were immediately greeted by a friendly employee at the front door area. He quickly sat us and provided menus. Since my wife and I often have similar taste, we both ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with French fries. To wash down the burger, I ordered the Vila Prazeres Raspberry Sour Portuguese beer. Less than 15 minutes later our orders were being delivered to our table. My wife and I both quickly devoured our burgers (you know it's good when you barely stop eating to talk), along with the delicious fries (the garlic mayo dipping sauce is bomb)! I must add that the burger bun alone is delightful. Although I'm not a beer person, I found the Raspberry Sour beer to be deliciously refreshing. If you're looking for an American style burger that to satisfy your appetite, I highly recommend Ground Burguer!
