Nice hidden gem, out of the way of busy touristy Oxford city centre. Great for a breakfast, as well as hunger fix during the day. My favourite so far is avocado toast, mmm, yummy!! Upstairs area is quite cosy, but there is a spacious room with plenty of seating downstairs. There is also one or tables outside, if you prefer that. The Jericho cafe is a cozy place to hang out or sit and work, but that's about the only nice thing I have to say about the place. It's way over prized (if you look at the meal sizes and food quality), the food is below average and the service is so-so. To give an example, I ordered a breakfast plate with eggs, salmon and tomatoes (£6.55) and a side order/upgrade of spinach (£2). I got a pretty small plate with two fried eggs where some of the egg whites were uncooked/jellylike/see through - that's the kind of thing that gives you salmonella (in my opinion only the egg yolk should be "liquid"). The spinach that I payed £2 for were kind of small and not that special and the amount of salmon wasn't something to celebrate. It tasted so-so but the jelly-like eggs made the whole thing a bit gross. The tomato was OK. I finished the plate and I'm still hungry*. My friend got a small porridge/oat meal (£4.95) which should be sprinkled with nuts (there were no more than 5 BURNED nuts on it) and otherwise the porridge were pretty basic with some honey on it. He's also still hungry*. I suggest that the food should be improved so that it is on the same level as the atmosphere (and the prices). Now we'll go somewhere else to eat our second breakfast. *Just to let you guys know on the hungry thing: we're both pretty slim people. We like to eat but we don't stuff ourselves with huge meals. So the "still hungry" thing is not about us having a crazy appetite. read more

When planning my trip to Oxford this was one of the places that a website actually said was a really great place to go for an affordable and delicious traditional full English breakfast. So, when I realized that it was very close to where I was staying I made a point to go and try it. I had never had a full English breakfast, so of course that's what I got. You order at the cashier and then they ask you where you're sitting and they bring you your food. The meal came with a tea or a coffee, but I upgraded to a chai latte for an extra £1. So, it came out to be like £8. The meal was good, but I didn't like the beans, but that's just me. It came with 4 pieces of toast too. Good hearty, filling breakfast for sure. I was pleased. It's a nice little cafe, with additional seating downstairs. Plenty of room to spread out down there if you need to get some work done or have a group. Free wifi as well, which is always good. They serve other pastries, cakes, sandwiches and other lunch items as well that are reasonably priced, which are tasty too. I frequent this place now as it's in a good area and is walking distance from the city center. read more

This place was totally just meh. Apparently it's pretty classic for the neighborhood, so maybe worth a quick stop in, but just grab a millionaire bar and a coffee. We went for breakfast, and I was not very impressed. I got a bap- bacon and sausage- and it was burnt and really plain. It was also very expensive; for just a bap, I'd expect it to be cheaper, but it was not! My husband got a full English breakfast, which was fine, but even more expensive and still pretty boring. White toast, some eggs, beans, some burnt bacon. I would've been fine with it if it had been a bit cheaper, but I was disappointed by the price. The coffee and tea were average, nothing special. Their lunches may have been better- we looked at the menu and it had promise- but it was still expensive. Overall, just okay food at a price that I thought was too steep for the quality and quantity we got. read more

On the other hand, the food and drink are good if you can part with your pounds. Meh, I've had better. Oxford certainly has lots of coffee shops (though I hate to admit it- Missing Bean) and this one falls a bit flat for me. A popular hang out for Jericho residents, it allows for lots of laptop lounging and coffee sipping without anyone hurrying you along. Many people come here to do dissertations or group work. However, I don't really understand why. The place is small to begin with, but it gets insanely busy at brunch/lunch time with the queue basically spilling out of the door. Not a very peaceful environment, if you ask me. Unless you opt to sit downstairs. The food is a range of flapjacks and other home-made baked goods which are nice but pretty overpriced. As is the coffee. Definitely one of the pricier cafes I've been to. Unfortunately the coffee is just not worth it. Sad times. read more

The Jericho Café is a great haunt for students, not least because you order and pay individually at the counter, meaning that there's never any drama about splitting the bill and there are no unexpected charges. Hot main courses start at about £6.50, while there are sandwiches and salads available from about £4. The service is pretty fast (although I did end up with cold pasta on one occasion, but it seems to be a one-off), and the food is basic but tasty, with a reasonable selection for vegetarians and a few daily specials. Breakfast is served in the mornings, and includes full English and lighter options. The coffee is serviceable and there are lots of cakes and pastries available if you have room for dessert. They sell wine by the glass. There's loads of room in the downstairs seating area, although it isn't quite as nice down there and carrying your drink down the stairs can be a pain. The staff are mostly lovely, although to echo a previous reviewer, quite frequently one encounters some subordinate getting laid into by a particular male member of staff, which can be rather awkward. read more

This is one of the best independent cafés in Oxford. Loads of seats on the ground floor with opportunities for natural light and people-watching on Walton Street, free wifi, and even more seats downstairs. It's also in a great location in Jericho, right next to pretty Observatory Street. A nice mix of locals, students and others. The coffee is good and so are the food options, though the juice is quite overpriced for a small glass. It's a lovely place to sit, read, chat or work though. My only gripe is they don't sell any fresh fruit, when it somehow feels like they should. read more

The food is good quality, I'd say every time I've ordered something I've consumed it with a suitable amount of gluttony. A really nice place to go at any time of day. The breakfasts are great, especially the sourdough bread. It is also a great place for a quick lunch or dinner, as they do really nice light options like big salad bowls and 'melts', as well as heartier hot dishes. The melanzane alla parmigiana is my favorite and the daily specials are usually a good bet. There is only a handful of places in Oxford serving a properly good coffee: Quarterhorse, Zappis, Natural Bread Company, Jericho Coffee Traders, Brew, The Missing Bean, and (surprisingly) The Rickety Press. Not only is the Jericho Cafe NOT one of these places...it's almost as if some Oxford academic spent years researching how to make the worst espresso coffee possible. It boggles the mind that someone could take coffee beans and turn them into such completely sapless nothingness. How can a place have the nerve to call itself a café and serve up mug after mug of such pure shamelessness? Then the food comes. All the worst elements of English cooking. Typical grey flavorlessness. Cheap ingredients. Everything tastes overly-boiled. Even things that haven't been boiled. Plate after unimaginative plate of laziness. Yet it draws a crowd every day purely because it's in a prime location on Walton Street. Meanwhile, just a couple hundred meters down the road, The Rickety Press is serving up an absolutely delicious breakfast (rivaled locally only by Oxfork) made with loving care and high end ingredients...with far superior service and a warm, cozy, handsome atmosphere. And then just over on Little Clarendon, Natural Bread Company is offering up brilliant coffees, nice breakfasts, and excellent baked goods served by a really nice staff. With these two option so close by, why on earth would anybody ever go to Jericho Cafe? It makes no sense. read more

The Jericho cafe is busy, and meals here can be over priced, but the convenience of one spot to stop for any meal, or an occasion where everyone in the party wants to eat a different type of meal (breakfast and dessert for example) makes this place a bit like a diner and a good all purpose cafe for everyday use. I think this is why locals like it so much. The sourdough toast is really really good. They are not great when it comes to vegan meals or understanding vegan ism. The service is pretty quick and not invasively friendly. It can be difficult to place an order of any complexity with some of the less experienced staff. They will let you open a tab if you have a large group arriving in dribs and drabs. read more

They ask you to sit downstairs to do work, but there's no phone signal down there, so you can't even use your own phone internet. I've given up on this place for anything but reading. Go to the Oxford Wine Cafe directly south on Walton. Awesome internet, better prices, bigger, more outlets. Don't waste your time unless you want to sip on tea and chat. read more

Jericho cafe is a nice little independent local cafe that always seems to have a handful of locals having a chat. It's more relaxed than the cafes in the centre of town and isn't full of tourists or businessmen making negotiations, but just people reading the paper or mums meeting for lunch with their babies. There aren't many seats inside, but I've always found somewhere to sit. The food is quite healthy and you order it at the counter. It varies daily and it's best to look at the specials board and then to check at the till before ordering, as not everything is always available. You can often see the food before ordering, as much of it is cold, so that can be very useful for making a decision. It can be slightly offputting being sat in front of the till, as you feel like the staff are always watching, but I guess if you're engrossed in conversation, it's not such an issue. When I last went, there was a man and a girl behind the counter; the man was incredibly polite to us, but then would not stop criticising the poor girl, making it rather awkward for us, and making me resent the man. Apart from that, the atmosphere is nice and you can sit here undisturbed for a long time. read more
