"Make sure you visit G & D's!" was probably the most common refrain you'd hear from OSAP alums before visiting Oxford. At least, those of them from Mississippi State always said this -- perhaps because, as a major AG school, many of us take the production of good ice cream very seriously. We're not called a cow college for nothing. :) G & D's, of course, refers to George and Davis. And, indeed, they have very, very good ice cream. I tend to keep it simple with chocolate, and theirs was always stellar. They have a couple locations around town so you can pick the one most convenient to you. It's a very popular place with a loyal following of students, residents, and tourists alike, and definitely worth giving a try. read more

I've been to G&D's a number of times already, and I think of all the locations I've visited in Oxford, this is one of my favourite places. I really like that G&D's opens at 8 am and closes at midnight, making it one of the best places to get coffee and study if you want to study quite late into the night. (And they have WiFi!) Their ice cream is good, their coffee is okay, and they even make savoury foods as well! I'm a huge fan of G&D's, whether I'm going for ice cream or otherwise. This location also boasts some of the friendliest staff I've had the pleasure of ordering from here in Oxford. G&Ds is probably the best ice cream you'll find in Oxford but still pretty average in comparison to other shops I've been to. I've had the Greek yogurt with honey, the chocolate, the daim bar crunch, and the vanilla-- texture wise, it's usually a hit or miss. Sometimes it's exceptionally creamy and other times it's quite icy. But in a city that lacks solid ice cream joints that have good seating, G&D's is definitely the top ice cream parlor. I spent 5 weeks at St. John's in 2006, and I think we went to G&D's at least three times per week... hahah. It's just a GOOD business! Coming from the United States, it was a bit of a shock to routinely pay 1 pound for a scoop of ice cream the size of a golf ball at places around England. We were happily surprised to find G&D's -- open from 8 AM to midnight? In a land of bars that close at 11 PM? Unheard of! It was such a relief to find somewhere that wasn't smoky and wasn't loud and full of drunk students. Good plan to be open for breakfast-y food (bagels etc) and sandwiches for lunch, ice cream, AND late at night! The food was solid, fresh, varied, and priced very reasonably. In 2006, a single scoop in a cup was 1.85 pounds, and "one" scoop in a waffle cone was 2.15 pounds. I'm an ice cream fiend, so I always got the scoop in a waffle cone... roughly equivalent to 4 golf ball scoops from anywhere else in town! What a value! (Yes, I'm being American...) I enjoyed seeing the trivia board on the wall (a weekly contest), a cozy atmosphere... all in all a really neat place to hang out! Plus, I enjoy the fact that they deliver on bikes. :D On a side note -- when I went back in 2008, I was pleasantly surprised at the St. Aldate's location at the lengths the staff went to to help me decide on a shirt to get (ie: whether the shirt would shrink or not, what color, etc). Why is there so much hype about G&D's in Oxford? Oh, because food in Britain is crap/average unless you're willing to dish out more than 60 pounds. Look, the ice cream is ok, but it definitely does not deserve the hype. The texture is too icy, and not creamy enough. Flavours are very average, and not that creative. I would rather sit at home with a tub of Green and Black's vanilla ice cream (which by the way is amazing). If you're ever in San Francisco, go to Bi-Rite Creamery in the Mission or Ici in Berkeley. Then, you'll know what REALLY good ice cream tastes like. (no surprise here give that innovation in the U.S. is far more active than in Britain....you can even tell it in the ice cream....) read more

Although this place is slightly off the main road, it is delectably delicious. To preface, I had walked by this place three times before I decided I was craving ice cream. The line was only at the door, so it was only about a 10 minute wait. However, as soon as we got in line, it seemed like 15 other people got in line after us. When you first shuffle into the building after the line, you're greeted with a giant cow mural above your head. It's entertaining, so you start craning your neck trying to see the next cow-art. Or the bulletin board filled with local shows. Or the binder of customer-suggested flavors. Or the blackboards of new and classic flavors, as well as drinks and even pizza bagels! By the time I got to the front of the line, I was overwhelmed (but the good kind). Thankfully I was able to sample some of the flavors, and settled with the coconut kind. If you're looking for rich, refreshing and slightly sweet, I would go with that! Service was understanding and friendly, interior was quirky and ice cream delicious. An ice cream parlour, with a myriad of different flavours (changing on a regular basis), that's open till midnight every night of the week - what's not to like? As a student this was a regular haunt on the way back from a night out in the pub (back in the day when pubs closed at 11); as a host, this was a great location to bring visitors; and as a visitor to the city, its a lovely place to meet up with friends and chat over the latest flavour combinations. read more

Great place with a good selection. My actual use for G&D is not ice cream, like so many late night shoppers that study and hang out here, but I actually like to go in the morning when it is quiet and get a bagel. This is one of the only shops in Oxford where you can get a relatively good bagel. They are not super fresh or interesting, but they are just what you are looking for if you are a bagel person. I also strongly recommend the ploughman's on a bagel. Great lunch, wrapped up nice and conveniently. The ice cream and drinks are good too. If there is one place to visit ithas to be one of the G&D cafes around Oxford. This one is on Little Claredon street so there are some different shops to mooch around in. Ah, the Little Clarendon St G&D'san excellent half-way house for us poor LMHers who have such a long way to walk back to college from the centre of Oxford. No other café that I know of has cow-spotted stools, an oil painting of the Moona Lisa (I kid you not), and a discount on certain days of the week if you bring a cow (real or otherwise). The ice cream is fabulous and the coffee is pretty good too, while their hot chocolate is exceptionally smooth; their bagels and pizza bagels are also delicious (they use excellent brie), although they're not cheap. If you get enough people together to sign a petition, they'll apparently make a new ice cream flavour for you. I believe that is how the green tea ice cream came into existence. And it's open 'til midnight, which is ace for teetotallers like me who quite fancy going out of an evening but don't really want to head for a pub read more

Nice little ice-cream shop with some interesting flavours: I tried the 'Dime Bar' ice-cream (the sweet of my childhood, so I was rather excited!), and my partner tried the Rosemary & Sea Salt (which I naturally nicked a nibble or two from) in waffle cones. They were both delicious, and very creamy, though I would rather the flavours have been a little stronger, in particular the rosemary - it was delicious, but needed to be a little more potent and daring to be really interesting. A pleasant enough little shop with good service and a good selection. Would recommend if you're looking for a good (not earth-shattering, but certainly very good) ice-cream in Oxford. The original, and to me always the best G&Ds ice cream cafe. The smallest and most cramped of their shops, this has become a little less crowded as the other G&D locations in Oxford absorbed the shopping rush and tourists. And it's still the most charming, with it's array of fun Cow based art. The ice cream is made fresh, on site. I highly recommend the 'Oxford Blue' Berry ice cream, which is rich and packed full of real blueberries. And they're the only ice cream makers I know of to make a coffee ice cream from real, and fresh, coffee. Make sure to look for the 'Petition Book' listing the recent petitions by regular customers and Oxford students to try out a new ice cream recipe, and maybe try out their 'Petition Ice Cream' of the day. (G&D's invented Irish Cream ice-cream because of a petition to try and produce a 'Bailey's Ice Cream'.) And it's not just ice cream. They do fresh bagels, again baked on site. If you want a more substantial lunch, try out a pizza bagel. read more

So, there are two G&D's in Oxford, but I frequent this one more. The ice cream is good, I've never tried a flavor I didn't like, and they sometimes have frozen yoghurts as well. Why I really like them though is the bagel pizza/sandwiches they serve. Whilst not exactly gourmet food, they can definitely hit the spot. I'd recommend the greek salad bagel sandwich especially. The third reason I like them is that they're one of the few places that are open until midnight where you can grab a bite (and a standard selection of drinks and coffee). If you're out late but not too late (say after 10:30), they're one of the only options I've found to get a relatively decent snack. Oh, and you can also eat breakfast here (they open at 8am), but I'm not often a morning person so I haven't had the pleasure of doing that yet. read more

Nip in here when you fancy a treat and great when you're hungry at 11pm - it's open till midnight. The main attraction is the ice-cream - there's lots of regular flavours (oxford blue, banana, vanilla, strawberry, pistastio, super chocolate) and there's always a petition flavour suggested by the customers - my favourites have been the turkish delight, a cinnamon mix, cream egg - the sorbets and froze yoghurts are ace too. I eat most of them with a topping of gummy bears... yum. There's also a range of bagels that deserve a mention - the cream cheese and the brie are really good. This is the G&D's I go to when my house mates and I want a bit of a walk with a reward at the end. This is the original location of G&D's and it is tiny. During busy hours you will not find a seat and it gets quite crammed in-front of the counter, however when you need G&D's ice cream, you've just got to deal with it. I remember a few years ago I came on what I believe was a Monday, just in time for one of a few weekly competitions they have where you try to get a plush cow through a basketball hoop. I won and was rewarded with a free quart of any ice cream of my choice. Good fun. I will say that I do prefer the other two G&D's locations due to them being a bit more convenient, having more space, and having a few less young Uni of Oxford students trying to be Oxford Uni students. I found this place on yelp while visiting Oxford with a friend, and I was absolutely blown away by this place. The ice cream was DELICIOUS and the staff was friendly. The ice cream tasted homemade, which I probably was, and they give you a lot for your money. I ordered the two scoops and got the coffee ice cream and the dimebar crunch. I got what was basically two scoops of each, or arguably one extremely large scoop of each, and they were both delicious. If I ever make it back to Oxford I will be visiting this place again, despite the fact it is a bit out of the way, but even then it would be worth it. read more

G & Ds is the ultimate ice cream cafe. Founded by a former Oxford student, it caters perfectly for tourists, locals and happy people in general. It's like the ultimate kids' fantasy: you pick your ice cream, your topping (sprinkles, sweets, chocolate), your sauce and, if you're feeling really hungry, your accompaniment. I can recommend the milkshakes and the infamous Cookie monster (2 giant cookies with ice cream and sauce sandwiched in the middle), but the ice cream itself is worth a trip alone. There's a book on the counter where you can suggest and vote for new flavours, leading to some unusual combinations - Dime Bar crunch is lovely; some of the more humorous options are perhaps for more unusual tastes! The cow theme of decoration is great fun and there are free papers, which more than makes up for the priciness of some of the food. read more

The best of the central G&Ds, but also the smallest. Service is better than St Aldate's and ice cream is decent. They do a value bagel lunch deal and the atmosphere is always fun and cosy. Coffee is nothing to write home about as others have noted, but it's more of ice cream parlour than a café and a fun place to end up for a sweet splurge on a late night. They have an occasional competition where you have to impersonate a cow, which is unusual to say the least. I wish they'd clean the tables more often, though. read more

This cafe is so wonderful, it is a real Oxford institution. The late night opening on the weekends makes it a great place to hang out after the pubs have shut! A great place to meet friends, drink coffee, catch up on Daily Information...but of course the real reason to go is the ice cream.
