However, after she repeatedly asked them if what they were doing was covered, she was billed $2,000. At one point they were taking lots of x-rays and she asked why, since she only needed a cleaning and had x-rays from her old dentist. They said the x-rays were free. That was not true, they billed her. Unfortunately, when she checked in for her appointment, she did not read the paperwork they gave her carefully and she initialed or signed something that said the dentist could do procedures not covered by insurance. This was a mistake on her part. But, I want to stress, she asked them about cost, and as previously stated, they said it was free. They also wanted to pull two teeth that same day. She said 'no', because her old dentist was very thorough and said her teeth all looked great. I have since read many other reviews from people who have gone to this office and were told their teeth were in horrible shape and they needed a lot of work. Some went for second opinions and were told their teeth were fine.

But once, while living in San Diego, I found a great laid-back dentist who was finally able to squash (most) of my anxiety. Unfortunately, after only two appointments I moved... to Tucson. The first dentist I tried here was an awful experience. He used some newfangled laser and told me I had six cavities which is more than I've had in my entire life. As a scientist, I asked to see the research and when he handed me the pamphlet from the laser company, I hightailed it out of there and didn't look back. But the damage was done- my anxiety was back in full swing. I briefly considered whether the best plan would just be to drive to San Diego twice a year. But after another year went by, I put on my big girl pants, read a review of Dr. Franzen on Yelp, and made an appointment. Boy did I hit the jackpot! Dr. Franzen is old-school in the best way. He's kinda like your sarcastic grandpa and his wife, the receptionist, is like your chatty grandma. He doesn't believe in unnecessary treatment. He doesn't measure your gums and yell out those guilt-inducing numbers. He's fast- like xrays and cleaning in 30 minutes fast. And he doesn't use lasers (two years later still no sign of those six cavities). So if the thought of the dentist makes you bite your nails to the quick, Dr. Franzen is your man. Actually he's the man. I'm already dreading the day he retires!

Dr. Franzen is nice, calm, calming, quietly funny, efficient, honest and helpful. He didn't make me feel bad for having not been to the dentist in so long, instead seeming understanding when i explained my previous bad experience. I have never liked a dentist nearly so much and I will certainly see him regularly as long as I live in Tucson. You should, too.
