She was concerned about my tone of voice, which was that of a weary individual about to surrender to the conglomerate we know as the health insurance industry in the United States. For 42 of my 60 years, I've been beset by chronic illnesses whose difficulty in treating never aligned with the "If you can't fix it, toss it" training that many doctors receive in medical school. I've fought through a labyrinthine system that promotes profit over patients and is largely indifferent to the chronically ill who, as I, have mostly lived their lives in hospitals and clinics and whom our culture of materialism has branded non-productive, lapsed capitalists who do nothing but suckle at the perpetually shrinking bosom of public assistance. Nicole got on the line; she listened with palpable interest. She was respectful and resourceful. At every point he tried to make jokes that purposefully made me and my friend (both women) uncomfortable. Also, I was told I can show up at any time but when I did I was met with an extremely rude "uhhh I have an appointment right now". Why would I be told I can come anytime if you work by an appointment system. I'm sure if you're a man he would have more respect for you but I wouldn't send my worst enemy to have to deal with this guy!! Definitely gonna be telling everyone I can to avoid this place.
