I've been working with JEFF's Small Engine for nearly 20-years, but he recently sold the company to SMALL ENGINE EXPRESS. The 20-years of repeat business with Jeff was based on quality repairs, affordable prices, and repeat satisfaction no matter what I brought to the shop. My experience with the NEW company is the polar opposite. First, they charge you $ 48.00 in advance of looking at your repair, and that's the minimum for the 1st 30-minutes. OK, I agreed since all I had was a broken pull string on a nearly new leaf blower. The gal at the front desk implied the pull string was another $ 5.00. I was called today, just 2-days after dropping it off, and was told that my unit could not be repaired since it was 'obviously' encased in the manufacturers plastic housing, BUT they could provide me with a used one they had in the shop. The cost for the used part . . . $ 65.00, and Steffie (gal on the phone) said that the $ 48.00 was already paid towards the labor. So, she's telling me I should pay $ 113.00 to repair my $ 150.00 blower, and although the tech knew inside of 5-minutes it was not repairable, they still charge $ 48.00 of 'minimum' labor. It's BAD business, and I'll be picking up my broken blower later today - less the $ 48.00 I should have donated to charity. Once that's complete, I'll be asking my credit-card to deny the charge with this explanation . . . what I think was a gross error and subject to a 'bait and switch' scenario. Lastly, Jeff has seemingly opened up shop again due to issues with the agreement he had with Small Engine Express. It suggests that the new company not only treats their customers poorly, but that at a higher-level, operates with a similar low-level of integrity. read more

I took my extremely reliable 10-year old John Deere garden tractor in to have a wire replaced that had worn and bacame exposed causing a small fire due to the normal built up of dried grass after my first use this year. I also noticed that the unit stopped free-wheeling even though the unit was in neutral and the brake disengaged. Couldn't tell you what the causitives were, but Jeff told me, initially, he would have it back to me within a week to ten days. Not only did he do a superb repair job at a fair price, but I had my tractor back in TWO DAYS! Thank you, Jeff! I'll be sure to tell others. read more

This place is the reason people don't trust mechanics and repairmen. I brought my weed whacked in to get serviced and had to call them back to find out the status of my job. They told me that it needed a new carburetor and it would cost $70 for the repair. Now seeing how the weed whacked itself was around the same price I decided it wasn't worth the trouble and told them I was going to pass. I said that I would be there in a few minutes to pick up my property. They quickly told me that it wasn't going to be ready and that they needed some time. I come to find out they installed the new carburetor without my authorization and needed to take the part out and give me back my defective weed whacker. Bad business practice and a group of not-so-nice people working there. I'm not happy that I see they are closing, I don't like anyone out of work, but I think they need some new management and workers pronto. read more

We have used this place 3 times, and each time we get the same song and dance. We drop off an item, and we are told a week for pick up. 2 weeks go, 3 weeks go no call. My husband had to drag my complaining butt up there to tell the guy off! He knew what was wrong with it, didnt call, and said it was a simple fix, ok why wasnt it ready? Then he asked us why we needed it so fast if it was raining!!!!! The place is stacked top to bottom with repairs in piles. Lawn mowers and tractors are stored outside and not locked up in a safe place. This place smells like a gas place ready to explode. No customer service skills at all, wont answer his phone, rude to customers, and you basically have to throw a tantrum to get your item fixed. I do not recommend this place. read more

I should have put this review out there a while ago, but time gets away. I stopped in this shop last fall to inquire about having our lawn mower serviced for the winter. I asked about being able to get it picked up and then delivered. I was told that they were super busy and that they could come and get it in about a week. Wasn't sure how long they would have it. So I gave my phone number and my address. A week came and went and then a few more days. He said they were busy so I didn't want to be pushy since the end of the mowing season was here. When I finally did call, he had no recollection of our conversation and didn't even have my name or my phone number. The bottom line is no one expects to get "gourmet service" in an engine repair shop. But respect is probably an innate skill to have when you are asking the public to come to you for parts/repair. It's no wonder his shop is up for sale. He's a disrespectful ignorant asshole. Should you take your equipment in for service or for parts, good luck. read more

I think the first one star review here is a bit unfair (since they never received service) so let me tell you what happens all the way through as a customer there. I had a push mower and then said it would take about a week to repair. It is the summer months and they are busy so it is very understandable (busy means they are good and get business!). I had a mower that wouldn't start and I did all of the basic checks: carb clean, spark plug, oil, gas and was stumped. Was quoted $50 for the repair over the phone and when I went in and they said it would take about a week. When I went to pick it up it cost me $50 and it took from Saturday afternoon until Friday afternoon to complete. All said and done, great time frames and I wasn't messed with on price or timing. The reason for knocking off two stars; customer service is non existent and very poor communication with the customer. I dropped off the mower and gave them 3.5 working days to check over the mower. I was told that they would call and discuss the issue with me and if it was worth repairing or not. I never received a call. I called and left a message but no returned call from them. The next day I called again and was told that they were told not to call customers back but my mower was repaired and ready to go. What? It almost seems like I am hassling them and in the way when I am there. The place is so packed with mowers, pressure washers and other equipment that it looks like a hoarder episode on TLC, no joke. They need more storage room some how some way or they need to move their repairs more quickly, or just call customers to tell them they can pick up their equipment (lots of done tags displayed). They also don't have the time to discuss the problem with the mower or the details of why it was broken in the first place. Disappointing. Tip for Jeff's: Hire someone who specializes in customer service, processes, organization and scheduling. That would be well worth the money spent there. Otherwise, they are solid with their repairs and I would take my mower/ small engine back to them and recommend them to others. With the warning of the customer service/ long repair wait as well. read more

Dropped off the leaf blower the place was Such a dump I was pretty sure I wouldn't see it again He told me he would call in a few days with an estimate. Called the same day and told me it was done. 1.) why didn't he call me with an estimate before doing the work?!? I asked him how much it was and he wouldn't give me a number said he would price it out when I got there. I was so ticked I sent my husband. When my husband arrived... 2.) he lied and said that "your wife (me) already approved the price of $35" My husband knew that wasn't true since I sent him because the guy did the work without giving me a price. He was able to talk the price down a little. One star for fixing the leaf blower. And one for same day service. Lost stars for customer service, lying, the place looking like a dump, and doing work without approval from the customer. read more

Left my generator there 6 months ago with a leak in the tank and a problem that although it started very reliably it would not run for more than 10 or so minutes before stopping. Finally called them and they said they fixed it. I asked about the tank and they said they had not fixed that. I asked them to do so, and then called back and was told it was ready. I didn't get there the same day to pick it up, so they called my home and told my wife they were going to need to "start charging for storage" for people who don't pick up their repairs (note they had been sitting on it for 6 months before I called them). I went to pick it up and they told me to run out the old gas and put high quality gas in it. Got it home and it would not start. Took it back and the guy was very nice, immediately taking time to work with me on it. He started it using starter fluid, ran it for a few minutes, and sent me home with it. When I got home I had one of two problems fixed (the leak), and it stopped running after a few minutes so the other problem was not fixed. That would be a 3-star rating. But they also introduced two NEW problems. I could only get it started with starter fluid, and it runs extremely roughly now including backfiring - two new problems in addition to the main reason I took it to them in the first place. I'm sure they are nice guys, as they seem nice as well as knowledgeable in person (though not very nice on the phone). But even if I knew that the third time I take it there they'll get it right I would rather take it to somewhere that will make sure it works before sending me home with it. It's unfortunate- he used to be fantastic when it was a smaller operation out of his garage. read more

A friend of mine told me about Jeff's Small Engine about 15 years ago. Jeff was working out of his house at the time, and I'd pull into his driveway and drop off my lawn mowers, snow blowers and in short order Jeff would have them working like new at a reasonable cost. I've gone to other small engine repair shops in Naperville, and while they were good, they were overpriced and not as fast with turn-around. So, now Jeff has my Craftsman snowblower that needs new paddles and a tune up (won't start). Jeff will re-paddle the auger and in doing it will make a modification that will significantly reduce the cost the next time around. Other shops want more than double what Jeff will be charging. I'm sure when I get it back it will be working great. read more

I would give this outfit a ZERO star if I could.I purchased a simple piston ring from this less than reputable self proclaimed business thru ebay. Waited and waited ,the delivery date came and I emailed inquiring where my part is and got the standard USPS doesn't like me and the don't deliver all my parts,your typical bovine excrement excuse. Kept getting emails asking if I had received the part and told to keep waiting for it that they shipped it ( which we both know was a lie). So got tired of his nonsense and filed a paypal claim which he drug out to the very last day he could then this joker only made partial refund,so i filed another paypay claim. I guess this jerk doesn't realize that paypal does not take well to underhanded,lying people claiming they are a business. I brought my snowblower to this place for a carburetor repair. From the very beginning, the owner was very unprofessional. Not going into a lot of detail, but this guy is a jerk and treats people poorly. I received a call about a week later stating the blower was ready. I paid $65 and took the blower home. I attempted to start it and wouldn't run. I called Jeff and he said it was running when I took it home and that he would look at it again but for another service charge. Don't go to this place. Service is poor and they don't know how to treat people. read more

I called this place to have my riding lawnmower repaired over the last four weeks and each time I call I'm told they are slammed and they'll call back when they have time. I've been given estimates each time I talk to them on when they can repair the lawnmower and each time I check in, they're to busy. I'm not sure who is running this place but if they are that busy, perhaps it's time to hire some people. Furthermore, they need to learn how to talk to customers. Always talking with a voice of frustration doesn't exactly bring the customers back ( or attract them). read more

Yes the place was a mess but it's a lawn mower service so I didn't care. They told me it would be done by a certain time and they over delivered on it as it was early. I brought in my sons gas scooter in for basic repair. He did tell me that he hates working on these things. I asked if that meant he won't work on it. He said no but it will take a week. A week went by and he said he hadn't gotten to it, and reminded me that he hates these things. I told him I will just come get it. Jeff told me he'll have it in another week. Well took three weeks. And when we got it home it didn't start. He put on a new starter coil but apparently didn't try to start it. Brought it back and Jeff was very rude. I asked for my money back which Jeff gave me. He thencut the new cord. I admit that I had a few choice words and not sure how this guy is still in business. read more

I took my power washer in for repair. They told me that it would take 7 -10 days to repair. I called them on the 7th day and no one had even looked at it but told me that a new pump would cost me $185. How could they quote me a price without even investigating what was wrong??? I called back 4 days later and they told me how busy they were and that "Maybe" they would get to it in about a week. I gave up on them and picked up my broken power washer. Steve, the owner, never apologized for misrepresenting the timeline and then told me that it was "probably not worth fixing" as I walked out. Again, he wasted 2 weeks of my time and was once again provided "expert knowledge" based on no investigation on his part. This place feels like a disorganized local business run by someone who is disinterested in providing normal customer service on a timely basis. Stay away!!! I recommend taking your small engine needs to Sears Hardware in Aurora behind Westfield Mall. Their service department is part of the Sears family. Took my weed eater to them the last week in May to be fixed. They said it would be a week and they'd call me. I went back in 3 weeks since I hadn't heard from them. Wasn't even looked at. Promised it would be done in another week. 6 weeks later and still not looked at. He said I'll have it fixed by the end of today. Oh he could fix it today but it took him 6 weeks and he hadn't even looked at it??? I brought it home unfixed. DON'T go to this guy. Saw a "For Sale" sign on his property today. My son was mowing his second lawn of the day when the mower died and he still had 5 lawns to mow this week. We dropped it off at Jeff's Small Engine Repair in Plainfield. Explained what the situation was and asked them to see what they could do about getting it done sooner than the 5 day estimate. Four hours after we dropped off the mower we got a call that it was repaired and we could come and get it!!! The mechanic said he understood the kid had lawns to mow and appreciates the fact that he is making money on his own power. Jeff did a great job repairing my lawnmower. He cleaned the carburetor and I hit a tree and he fixed some valve. He cleaned it all up and put nuts on the grass catcher to hold it in place. I'd give him 5 stars but he didn't call me when it was done. Just so you know, call him after a couple days to check on the status. Otherwise, he's a busy guy. He needs more space so it is cluttered. Who cares? He's trying to get a bigger place. This is the second time we've used Jeff. I'd definitely use him again. read more

I have had only good results using Jeff's small engine repair. For the past 6 years, I arrive every spring with my Toro lawnmower for a spring tune up and blade sharpening. I have found their repairs to always be done well, and compared with another repair shop in Naperville, they are about half the cost. I took a generator and a power washer to Jeff. It took three weeks to fix them. Not a big deal but I had to call to find out they were finished. I got home and the power washer was still having the same issues that it had before I brought it there. I called and dropped it back off. There it sat for almost two weeks. I stopped at the store to inquire about when it would be fixed and Jeff started complaining about customers and how he is sick of people not understanding the time it takes. Well he had almost five weeks to look at my power washer and to fix it. He obviously didn't do either. He asked me to hook up the machine to show him what it was doing. As I did the power washer did exactly what it had been doing but Jeff kept blowing me off so I just took my power washer and left. If I wanted to be treated like my money didn't matter I would have left the power washer there. Hopefully at some point he won't be so busy and he will realize customers will find someone else. read more

These guys are busy....These guys will take the time to answer your questions...These guys are reasonable...These guys are very hard working and know what they are doing. So they don't have a high tech filing system for parts and accessories but they do know where everything is. I have used them on a few occasions and they have done what they say they would do. I have used this repair shop numerous times and have always received great service in a timely manner. Over the years I have seen the shop fill up with people's equipment, most of it tagged and repaired. When I inquired about all the equipment he commented on how people abandon there equipment. Have been going here for several years now and have never been disappointed. Sure, it is messy inside, but honestly, what does one expect? It's an engine repair shop. You drop off and you pick up. Your time inside should be minimal. Anyway, I dropped off my lawnmower for a tuneup and to replace a broken knob. I was told it would be ready in about a week, and they got it done in 5 days. Even better than the turnaround time was the price. Extremely reasonable compared to other repair shops I have used in the past. Great overall experience and I definitely recommend. read more

I had my riding mower tuned up here. They charged me $40,00 for pickup and delivery. When I got it back I noticed some fluid was leaking. I went to the shop and Jeff said he would get to it when he could. Three weeks and three more visits to the shop and nothing has been done. Jeff told me that if the mower breaks he will not stand by his work. He also lied to me and told me he had called to pick up the mower. (Not the brightest comment in the era of caller ID). read more

I called, what I thought, were good places to get the parts. None of the places I contacted gave me ANY help. Then I called Jeff's.
