My husband and I have been seeing Dr. Chung for years. First, my diabetic eye issues (torn retina, macula degeneration, etc.). He has kept my eyes in good shape. Second, My husband, unexpectedly, tore his retina. I took him immediately to our regular eye doctor and he called Dr Chung, who was in the parking lot on his way home. Dr. Chung didn't hesitate to see my husband and performed emergency surgery. To make a long story short. My husband has regained his 20/20 vision. Dr. Chung said that doesn't happen very often. About 2 months ago as I was eating dinner and all of a sudden my vision in my left eye was altered where I could not see clearly. I went to the ER and after conducting some tests they referred me over to an Ophthalmologist who determined I had a detached retina and ended up referring me to Dr Chung whose office was in the same building. When I went to see Dr Chung he had a full waiting room but tended to me quickly. After he examined my eye he had found that I had multiple tears which would probably need to treat immediately. He explained to me most people get conventional surgery which has a long recovery process but could fix the problem He did provide me with an alternative treatment cryotherapy combined with laser therapy which had lower probability of fixing the problem because of the multiple tears I had. Most Doctors would push the surgery because they would make more money however Dr Chung is more concerned with what is in the best interest of his patients and left the decision up to me and thoroughly went over the pros and cons of both. I decided to try the non surgical procedure with the option of having surgery if it was not successful . This happened on a Friday afternoon and Dr Chung started the procedure after normal office hours and stayed late to treat my eye. The next two days which were Saturday and Sunday kept working on my eye spending time away from his family. He continued to see me every day for the next week and even took time to call me to check on me. Unlike any Doctor I have had dealings with Dr Chung genuinely seemed more concerned with my well being then the money he makes. Besides that he is very easy to talk to and has a good sense of humor. I see Dr. Chung at his Rockville office. I have been a patient of his for several years. During my initial visit he asked many questions and he determined that there were certain things I needed to do in order to prolong the health of blood vessels in my eye that would have very shortly impacted my vision. With his guidance and support for the past 3+ years my vision has remained the same and I am extremely grateful for this as I had no idea, and there was no indication, that a problem even existed. I have so much faith in Dr. Chung's abilities that I have referred, not only friends and relatives, but, my very own daughter whom has had issues with her eyes since early childhood. Today I referred the fourth person I know with severe eye problems to Dr. Chung, and I went to this site to show them the many five star ratings he's received. Then I came across the one and only ridiculous hearsay critique of his service. This non-patient even had the nerve to say that one of the positive reviewers must have been a friend of Dr. Chung to give him such high ratings. This kind of second hand reviewing should not be allowed. My personal experience with Dr. Chung started a little more than five years ago. I received what one would describe as top notched care for my eyes at Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Center. I had world renowned specialists working to save my vision, but to no avail. I was placed on ridiculously high amounts of steroids, and given sickening injection every visit. I actually prayed to find some other specialist and then I found Dr. Jeffrey Chung with nothing but five star ratings from all raters. He assessed my condition, taking into consideration all that had been done for three years hence at Johns Hopkins and he treated me with a medication that worked in eliminating my Uveitis, and saving my vision. Once I improved, he informed the Wilmer Eye Center of steps he took to resolve my problem. I refer everyone to him, and everyone I have referred thinks he is top notched. I have never met a more serious physician totally dedicated to saving patients vision. He is a caring physician who talks with you about your condition and will not suggest surgery or any procedure unless absolutely necessary. He will also refer you to top notched physicians like himself for other specialized services. The bad reviewer said there was some kind of language barrier for him with the so called patients he represented. Well there must have been, because he even states that his own mother referred his grandmother to Dr. Chung. I have seen Dr. Chung twice, first time is the new patient check and he did a laser surgery on my eye. The second time happened 1 day after the first visit due to a big concern. Then I received the bill which will charge me $1251.77 in total after insurance. I called their office about the ridiculous bill for 2-3 times. I have to say that're the worst experiences I've ever had in my life among the family doctors, dentists, pediatricians I've ever seen. The biggest problem is the surgery, or I have to say the outcome of the surgery. I had a hole on my retina, and was referred by my family doctor Dr Cui Wei to Dr. Chung's office. Dr. Cui said that he had the same problem and he let Dr. Chung did the same laser surgery on him. That's the key reason I let Dr. Chung performed a laser surgery in my first visit there. During the diagnose, Dr Chung said he would do a 3 lines standard laser surgery on the hole. However, He actually gave me ~800 shots on my retina for treatment. I remembered that he said 'I think I'm a little bit crazy, I shot 6 lines for u other than 3 lines' in the surgery... One day later, I felt there was a big black shadow in front of my vision. So I contacted his office and saw him again. He told me the shadow may be caused by the laser shots which were a bit close to the vision area, and the shadow may last for two weeks or the whole life. Then I saw another retinal expert and asked my Ophthalmologist, both of them thought 800 shots were too much - my case only needed about 80 shots, and the price they charged was too high. Secondly, I'm not saying he is a racist, but if you're a Chinese, you'd better not come here. he definitely has some prejudice on Chinese. When I showed the hesitation if proceed with the laser surgery, he said 'if I am a senior white doctor, you should not be hesitate. You hesitate, because I'm a Chinese, and funny things is that Chinese person don't believe in Chinese doctor', then he commented several times 'the Chinese always like blabla', and hold his throat to pretend a Chinese senior lady, made several 'funny' jokes on the Chinese senior people who believe in '1 shot to be effective, no negative effect'. He even express his special sick of ' the Chinese men in their forties, come from 'Shanghai', working as engineer'. I'm really tired of hearing his feeling about Chinese 'hateful' people, while he's recommended by our family doctor, Dr Cui. We've seen Dr. Cui for years, and we trusted Dr. Cui. I had to believe Dr. Chung is a talented retina expert and just doesn't like to keep his manners. That's why we stood his rudeness, and proceeded with the surgery in the same day. Last but not the least, when I called their office for the bill, all the office members showed consistent rudeness, aggressiveness in which way I've never ever seen. The rudest office managers ever even educated me that 'you don't know how U.S. insurance work....you're a adult and u'd seen a doctor then u need to pay for it...'. I don't have the time to tell her as she hang up the phone last time, hope she can see the truth here, actually I paid all the doctor statements for all the treatments and services that my family had got. I just couldn't stand to pay a doctor's office $1250 for a surgery that leave me a life-time shadow every time I open my eyes and the rudest treatment from the front dest/office manager. And I wouldn't be thankful for the 10 times shots he gave me even 'he would not charge more for more shots'. Funny thing is that I felt deep concerned even angry on the abnormal shadow on the retina, then I came to his office on the day after the surgery, he charged me another $200 after insurance. So if what ever problem happened in the surgery, once a patient came to see the doctor again to question on the problem, he need to pay more even it's not his fault? As a conclusion, the right thing should be no mater what ever I as 'an adult' suffered from the surgery, I should just bear it, then I won't lose more money at least. read more

I should preface that the information I am submitting is not secondhand, hearsay, or unsubstantiated. The fact is I had to accompany both patients because of a language barrier therefore all the information presented was translated by me to each patient. The two other reviewers must be friends of Dr. Chung's to give him such glowing recommendations. My family has had two experiences with Dr. Chung. Both were egregiously careless and negative accounts. This review is long because it hopes to detail key elements warranted by the lowest rating. The first patient was my brother, accompanied by my mother and I, who went to see him because my brother felt awful pain in his eye. Dr. Chung prescribed him three drops, one was a steroid. While I understand steroids are commonly used, we try to avoid them unless absolutely necessary because of the potentially harmful side effects of extended use. This doctor said that my brother had to use it every single day for the time prescribed otherwise he'd have to start the regime all over. But he never gave a definitive end date only that it was to be used 4/day until his eye pain was better. Another option was for a shot of steroids that would for last 6 months, this way he wouldn't have to remember to administer the drops daily. After several weeks of following his "regime" to a T, my brother's symptoms were not only still present but he had developed a hard, circular mass behind his ear of the same eye that was receiving treatment. In a panic, my mother brought my brother in to see Dr. Chung. She asked him if this was normal and if it could be related to the drops. Dr. Chung said he had no idea what the growth was but it was definitely NOT related to the drops. If he did not know what it was, is it not grossly negligent to discount that option? He said the causes of my brother's condition are difficult to ascertain unless numerous tests were ordered. Unfortunately, all the tests were extremely costly. As my mother and brother prepared to leave, Dr. Chung suggested it could also be cancerous. Upon hearing this, my mother was worked into a frenzy, taking him to see doctor after doctor, for a second, third, fourth opinion. We literally went to see four other doctors; all of them said that they would have never prescribed that combination of medications. They also had similar explanations and remedies for his eye pain, none of them as serious as Dr. Chung concluded. Basically, being a college student, my brother tends to stay up late nights studying (aka gaming), paired with not taking out his contacts when he goes to sleep, equals bad news for his eyes. After the second, third, fourth opinions, my mother discontinued the drops right away and guess what, the mass disappeared almost immediately. While certainly I am not a medical doctor but I have to say the result is too close to be coincidental. The second patient was my grandmother who was having difficulty with her vision. Against the advice of my mother, my aunt had gone ahead and made an appointment with Dr. Chung. I was not present for the appointment but witnessed the reaction my aunt had to his diagnosis. I am a graduate student in the sciences and as a result he frequently gives me in-depth insight into the pathogenesis of the condition. This review is way too long in coming. In the summer of 2015 my brother was visiting from California, when he realized there seemed to be a permanent "spot" in his field of vision. He found Dr. Chung online (probably Yelp) and was able to see him the very next morning. Dr. Chung quickly diagnosed the problem, was very mindful of financial concerns and helped my brother navigate getting follow-up care on the west coast. He was very thorough, and took the time to explain everything well. Most importantly, he helped my brother realize that there was an underlying problem, such as hypertension and/or diabetes, that needed to be addressed. I am a physician who knows a good doctor when I see one. This man is great, not just good. He did a very thorough physical exam, something which is not too common with younger doctors these days. With treatment he was very conservative even though he is a surgeon. I was seen as an emergency and was promptly taken care of. On a scale of one to five, Dr. Chung is a ten! The first time I saw him was as an emergency patient. His examination was thorough and his explanation as to what was occurring was detailed. He took a conservative approach, but when things obviously needed to be taken care of, he acted swiftly and expertly. Dr. Chung is truly a God-send!!! I feel badly for waiting so long to do this review. He saved my son's vision! My 30 yr old son was complaining about "eye problems" to his wife & his sister, but hadn't mentioned anything to me. He suffers from sickle-C, which is a form of sickle cell anemia. Long story short, this is relevant because one of the major effects of the disease is deterioration of blood vessels - like in the eyes. He was referred, rather casually after an ER visit. Thank God, Dr. Chung saw him the very next day. It was life-altering news. My son was legally blind in one eye and quickly losing sight in the other. The one eye needed to be stabilized before the other could be operated on in the event the operation wasn't successful. Dr. Chung explained it carefully, thoroughly, patiently - to my son, his wife, to me (then later to my husband and the rest of the family) - answered all of our questions; Gave us time to cry together, pray together... My son had 1 daughter and his wife was pregnant with their 2nd. He was afraid he'd never get to "see" his 2nd child's face. Dr. Chung fought to save my son's sight as if his own life depended on it. We could not have hoped for more or better. There were so many challenges and stumbling blocks that came up each time we tried to go to surgery- getting surgery time, clearance, nurses, you name it. We went from hospital to hospital. It was real battle, and we were battling against time. Dr. Chung did everthing to move heaven and earth to get the surgery done on time and safely. In the end, we were pleased that Dr. Chung himself was able to perform the surgery, because we knew that no matter the outcome, he would have done everything possible in the OR. If it had been anyone else and things went badly, we might always question if more could have been done - but not with Dr. Chung. This is an imposter Dr. I had a peripheral retina detachment with vision 20/20, which is the best case for retina surgery to restore vision. He performed a Retina detachment surgery on me. He said it would take 2 hours. In reality he made it 4 and half hours. After surgery, my optic nerve is damaged. My macula is scratched thinner. I did not see anything for 3 weeks. And this Chung said he DID NOT do anything wrong. He is a dishonest, inexperienced bastard. read more

My husband had a complete retinal tear and our regular eye Dr recommended Dr Chung and I am so glad he did. Dr Chung took him in and started working on his eye right away. Today I would like to talk about an inspiring Physician: His name is Jeffrey Y.H. Chung, M.D. I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Chung under the most dangerous circumstances anybody can have- the danger of becoming blind in a very short time. When I went to see Dr. Chung I had had cataract surgery in both eyes, and had something in both eyes that looked bad and were not webs. My surgeon after a very conscientious examination gave me a card with Dr. Chung's name on it and told me to go and see him. Luckily I knew where his office was, as indicated by his address. He was waiting for me to examine my eyes. His examination indicated my retinas in both eyes were detaching. Without hesitation Dr. Chung informed me of the severity of danger to my eyes if that detachment was not stopped. Besides finding the problem immediately, he indicated the necessary procedure to be done, and started the procedure as soon as I said to him please go ahead. It was a very painful and long treatment to save my eyesight: laser procedures starting with very short intervals and making them longer as the retinas were being re-attached. Finally he considered that it was not necessary to have more laser procedures. It was a long and successful treatment where I still have 20-20 vision with both eyes at my age. Dr. Jeffrey Y.H. I can't comment about the other's person's review (which I was surprised to read given my experience) but I can say without a doubt that Dr. Chung saved my eye! On my visit during Thanksgiving to see my family in the DC area, I noticed some black spots in my vision. I was reluctant to do anything at first thinking it was something temporary that would go away by itself. A few days later, I began losing the bottom of my vision. HOUSTON: WE HAVE A PROBLEM! I realized that something was very wrong which I was later told was a family curse. After some arm twisting by my relatives, my uncle quickly drove me to Dr. Chung's clinic. He had nothing but praises for Dr. Chung after having successfully fixed his retinal detachment in one shot. After careful lengthy examinations, Dr. Chung showed me the pictures and confirmed what I had feared. I was really upset with the possibility of losing my eyesight at my age (36). Dr. Chung explained patiently how it occurred so early and the cause of my high myopia was a genetic predisposition (not that it makes the situation any better). He spent a great deal of time discussing the benefits and side effects of each option and I can see that he was serious and intent on getting a successful attachment on the first surgery. Given that success with my uncle, I went felt confident with his abilities. He froze my eye with liquid nitrogen, and then gave me a shot of gas bubble in my eye. I was wide awake throughout the whole thing. Surprisingly the needle didn't hurt, though my eye was sore for a few days afterwards from the freezing. My retina was attached after couple of days of sleeping upright. Dr. Chung was very happy with my result, needless to saw so was I. :) I took the Amtrak home a week later and my local retina specialist for a follow up said he did a great job saving my vision. It's been six months now and so far so good. No adverse symptom and I'm seeing at 20/20. After some discussion, I learn retinal detachment happened to 4 other relatives in the past. Some of whom went blind after multiple surgeries. Our family is 2 for 2 with Dr. Chung with retina detachments (both in one shot).
