Food has fallen from where it has been in the past. The service was fine, but we noticed the wings were not what they had been in the past in the past they were much larger and you got bigger portions. The sauces were still good. The service was fine, but it was a little slow, maybe because they didn't have many servers working that day, when we talked to a server, we learned that the whole business had changed ownership completely, so the original owners were not in charge anymore. They actually sold the entire franchise company. There are many memories here going to college and visiting afterwards, but unfortunately, that place has changed. I still may come through here when I come through town, but just know if there are some better places in town to eat now. read more

Was in Jacksonville, Alabama hitting the antique stores and saw this restaurant across the way from our shopping. Stopped in to get a bite and was pleasantly surprised. Jefferson's is a bar and eatery. Service was quick and friendly. We each had burgers and fries which did not disappoint! Very good grub! I have only been to one other Jefferson's location (Rockmart, GA) and this one seems to be quite a bit older and smaller. They were clearly short-staffed, turning down multiple phone orders for takeout food. They were busy but the staff remained helpful and attentive despite the lack of help. The food was kind of standard bar fare. The fried shrimp had a taste of old grease and the hush puppies were over cooked, but still edible. Mac & cheese was unremarkable. Doubt if I will return for a second meal unfortunately. read more

While pondering where I shall take my lunch I stumbled upon a little place called Jefferson's. The outside was not quite inviting but it turned out to be delightfully cozy inside. As I sat myself and pondered the menu I ordered an ice cold water and a Bud Light . I decided to order the pimento cheese bacon chicken sandwich and Cole slaw, it was absolutely delectable. I'm completely shocked that I have never written a review for one of my all time favorite places. I went to college just down the street and was there when Jefferson's first opened. How many people can say that they've been going to a restaurant for over 20 years and the food still tastes just as it did back then. Amazing wings, oysters, chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, I've eaten pretty much everything on their menu and have never had a bad meal. We always order a basket of their fried pickles which are so delicious and some wings with sweet and sassy sauce. Another must have item is their peanut butter pie. It is the original owner's grandmother's recipe and it just hits the spot! This is a great place to grab a beer and have some wings or a sandwich. Dollar bills decorate the entire restaurant along side of sports memorabilia and pennants. I'm proud to say that I was a contributor to the decor when I was in college. Look for the Charlotte Hornets, Chapel Hill, Duke, University of South Carolina and Clemson pennants, I brought back after Christmas break shortly after they opened. This place has been the standard on which I've based other restaurants hot wings since the 90's. It's the type of college town restaurant where you make your mark by signing a dollar and hangng it on the wall! I ordered the turbo(Jefferson's signature recipe), my daughter ordered the mild and my son got the chicken tender basket all with the seasoned fries. Althou this place also has the odd ball items like the peanut butter burger, Hawaiian chicken or guacamole chicken sandwiches, and fresh oysters. You do have to be mindful of the time at which you go as far as the wait you may experience around the busy hours. Either way, if you're in town it's definitely a place to check out. read more

UPDATE: I went back tonight (6/1/16) and the service was so great I wondered if they read my Yelp review. Food was also much better. I'm raising my review a star. This was once THE place to dine in Jville, but it has sadly gone downhill. The food doesn't seem fresh or well-prepared. The service is fair, at best. My clothes smell of fry grease when I leave. There are better sports bars in town. There are better Jefferson's in other towns even. It's sad that the original has lost its charm. Let's see what can I say..you can over look how small the restaurant actually is, but what you can't over look is how they try to have a "bar," area right when you come in the door, to where you can't even get to the counter to get an employees attention. A good thing about them is like most restaurants they do allow call in orders. However, the employees and the staff do not know how to manage in store and call in orders at the same time. Called in my order over and hour before I actually showed up to pick it up, still not ready...had to wait 20 more minutes...still not ready...had to wait an additional 10 minutes...guess what! Still not ready. However, after finally receiving my order I got a glimpse into the kitchen...the kitchen floor is completely COVERED in trash...I almost threw up, unfortunately I had already paid, so here's to hoping my family and I don't get food poisoning due to their lack of sanitation. read more

Jefferson's gets a 5 easily from me. It may be because my sentiment has my judgement clouded, but these are the best hot wings I have ever had. I went to Jacksonville State University 1990 - 1993 and ate here back then at least twice if not more times a week. It was a great little place to go to get off campus away from campus dining and have fun with good friends. I am 45 now and have not found any wings anywhere that taste better, and I have been looking for YEARS. It seems as though every hot wing I eat I am comparing it to those long ago college days at good old Jefferson's and none measure up and I feel like I am somehow cheating on Jefferson's (like a boyfriend) when I eat wings at other places. I recently went here on a trip back from Roswell, Georgia and was passing by on I20 and decided to take the exit and show David where I went to college and let him experience a place from my past. He is not a hot wing person, so he ordered the BBQ (without sauce because he says the best BBQ doesn't need any sauce) and he ate almost all the very large serving of plain BBQ so I know it was good. I was ashamed of myself for not being able to finish the 10 hot wings I ordered because I remember the day when I was younger I could easily demolish 15 or 20 of these while drinking beer. We, of course, had to mark our dollar and put it on the wall and I got a t-shirt. This is as close to a dive bar as you will find in Jax. The food is great, but the dirt here makes it pretty unappetizing.I want to like it, and keep giving it second chances. I love dive bars, and I'm far from a germ-a-phoebe, but this place is really a little too dirty. If I could change anything, I would get rid of the filthy dollar bills tacked up all over the place, power-wash, and open the fence a little on the claustrophobic, and spider infested deck. Their brand new, and cleaner Oxford location is much better, but they are starting to screw it up with the money on the walls too, what's up with that??? Jefferson's (I believe there's another one in Lawrence, Kansas) is basically a hole-in-the-wall college town bar, with pitchers of beer as the standard fare. But they serve catfish the way God intended it to be served: cornmeal coated and fried to a crispy outer perfection, with flaky, hot, tender insides, and a massive side of fries. Forget that Long John Silvers/Captain D's nasty, thick flour-base battered, is-there-even-a-piece-of-actual-FISH-in-all-this-damn-breading, so greasy you could lube a whole car with one piece crap, you're better off licking the floor if you're going to eat that. THIS is the place for catfish, and I wish there was a Jefferson's here in San Jose, CA. Five stars for their catfish basket, five stars for their creative use of dollar bills as wall (and ceiling) paper/ambience, five stars for the waitstaff that I'm always happy with as I know they will eventually be bringing me my heavenly catfish. read more

A friend and I were in town for a football game and wanted a place to hang out, have a few beers, and grab a casual bite to eat. Jefferson's was great. What they do, they do very well. The wings were excellent and the staff was efficient and friendly. Even though it was very busy, we sat at the bar and were well cared for by the bartender, Victoria, a delightful young lady. Sitting at the bar, you can't help but notice that they do a ton of carry-out business which is a testament to the food, I think. If you want the Ritz, keep on going, but if you want some great wings, fried dill pickles, cold beer and a friendly staff, then this is the place. read more

I've been to Jeffersons quite a few times now and I have mostly great things to say. So far I've had the wings, mushroom swiss burger and the chili cheese dogs along with a few appetizers. The burgers have been flat out awesome and I like the fact that I get to add my own condiments. The curly fries suck and were mostly small pieces of curly so I get the crinkle cut fries instead. The chili cheese dogs with the regular crinkle cut fries were great although the chili was rather bland and needed hot sauce with some salt but it wasn't bad at all. The quality of the wings are great and of a good size. I've had all of the different hot sauces on them and most of them are ok. I love HOT HOT HOT but with some flavor. Their turbo sauce is hot enough for me but the flavor sucks so I usually get turbo double dipped which has a fantastic flavor but not very hot. Staff has always been great and my take out orders are always completed very quickly even when they are super busy. Their peanut butter pie is freakin awesome and you can get it by the slice or buy a whole pie to take home. read more
