My companion came from a country where owning guns for most of the population is illegal, so she had never even held a gun before.

On Saturday February 4, 2017, I had the pleasure of taking the Louisiana Concealed Handgun Permit…read more(CHP) class with my dad. The course was taught by NOLATAC instructor Kenneth "Kenny" Fernandez inside of the St. Bernard Indoor Shooting Center. This nearly 10 hour class (including the shooting course) fulfills the mandatory requirement of 9 hours of classroom instruction necessary for a lawful citizen to apply for a CHP. This is a long day and I recommend that students bring their lunch, as we only had 30 minutes to eat lunch, as well as 2 separate 5 minute restroom breaks. This may sound extreme to some, but it was the goal of NOLATAC to provide a course that could be completed in a single day, rather than having a 2-day course. The classroom is set up with tables and has room for approximately 20 students. Thankfully, the chairs are extremely comfortable and there is a lot of legroom between rows. The classroom also features a Keurig coffee machine with at least a dozen varieties of coffees, as well as snacks, water and sodas. Kenny Fernandez is an excellent instructor. By law, he is required to cover a lot of topics. Louisiana Revised Statute was covered in depth through a series of lectures and videos, with emphasis on "Use of force or violence in defense", "Justifiable homicide", "Illegal Carrying of weapons" and "Statewide permits for concealed handguns; application procedures". Discussing law can often be mundane, but Kenny's approach includes a lot of relevant videos, slideshows and scenarios. To get his students thinking, a lot of "what would you do if" scenarios were presented and discussed. From the onset of his presentation and throughout the day, the importance of safety being paramount was drilled into our heads. Our particular class had a good representation of demographics to include both sexes, multiple ethnicities and ages ranging from mid-20s to mid-70s. Kudos to Kenny for being able to keep all of us engaged and keep us all moving forward through the class until it was actually time to shoot. Topics were covered in a way that even if a student had never touched a firearm, he or she would have a solid foundation by the end of the day. Some of the basics taught were firearm nomenclature, the 4 components of a pistol cartridge and the 3 causes of ammunition malfunctions. The essential 6 fundamentals of shooting (listed below) were explained in great detail, with significant emphasis on sight alignment and follow through. 1. Grip 2. Position (stance) 3. Breath control 4. Sight alignment/sight picture 5. Trigger press 6. Follow through We were taught that as CHP holders, "lethal force should be our last resort and we should exercise confrontational avoidance whenever possible; and our ultimate goal is to avoid a confrontation by not presenting ourselves as a target". Kenny was realistic in that he advised us that sometimes, good people are placed in situations where they may have to use lethal force to protect ourselves or the life of another. But he emphasized that "We do not make the decision to shoot someone. He/she makes the decision to get shot". Furthermore, we were taught that we shoot to stop the threat and we shoot until the threat stops. We received a lot of handouts at the beginning of the class to include: 1. United Stated Concealed Carry Association 2. Louisiana Open Carry Awareness League 3. The Louisiana Shooting Association 4. National Crime Prevention Council 5. National Rifle Association 6. Armed Citizen Educational Foundation 7. Pocket Constitution (my favorite) The actual shooting portion of the class took place at the very end of the day after all the academics were complete. The shooting portion, in my opinion as a somewhat experienced shooter, was not challenging. However, it served a valuable purpose for the newer shooter and met the requirements for a CHP. The course was a 36 round course with 12 rounds being fired at a black silhouette target from 6 feet, 10 feet and 15 feet. There was also a mandatory magazine change (for semi-automatic firearms) after each 6 rounds. Kenny was able to get us through the range portion of the class quickly and safely by utilizing some of the St. Bernard Indoor Shooting Center firearms instructors. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and I highly recommend using NOLATAC if you ever consider taking a CHP class. And if you do, I'd find out when Kenny Fernandez is teaching and try to get in his class.

For those that want to claim false facts in regards to the class or the instructors and say it's a racist class that would be a flat out lie and false. At the beginning of the class it is even states that the class will cover issues which have happened in the past and may be controversial, but only 100% of the truth in regards to the legal outcomes will be put out. There has never been any personal feeling or thoughts injected into the classes at anytime and it's always a great thing to hear people ask questions in regards to all situations and matter that is displayed during the course. Again the has never been any bias given in regards to anyone's race, color or sex during the class or in any of the items covered during the class. In fact if anyone is evening extra knowledge or guidance in regards to there chp permit the owner as well as the instructors are always available via email or even to the side during the class on breaks to assist. Great class and it's obvious due to the amount of other chp instructors within the state who have come and sat in the class as well as sought out additional knowledge for their personal classes. Even if you don't intend on getting your chp I highly recommend atleast at a minimum attend the course for the knowledge it provides

While planning a bachelorette party we had 3 out of 7 that wanted to shoot guns and see gators and the other 4 just wanted to do gators. I was worried about the logistics of it all, and when I called them, they were great and got everything arranged for us. Transportation showed up on time in a nice transit type van. We stopped for food and had the opportunity to stop for drinks for the swamp tour, which isn't typically allowed for general admission swamp tours. The gun range was great, (obviously no drinking during shooting) and the experience was amazing! The tour was also amazing, and we got to see a lot of gators as well as a fun rip through the swamps! Our guide was great and kept things very fun! I 100000% recommend Gator and Guns! Just do it, you will not regret it!

This place started doing tours again in the last 10 days! We just wanted to do the swamp tour and of all the places we called, we liked that this place would pick us up and have a private airboat for our group. It also didn't seem as far as the other options. We were picked up by Kat (not sure about the spelling) from our Airbnb. She was so kind and helpful and even gave us disposable coolers cuz we didn't have any. She offered to stop by somewhere to get more food and/or drinks. We were fortunately all set but she was super flexible. In addition to being our driver, she was more than happy to share her very vast knowledge of New Orleans culture. She helped us understand the difference between Creole and Cajun. Talked to us about the more "American" architecture vs the old school Creole homes. We very much enjoyed talking to her. Once we got to the swamp, our guide was Shawn (Sean?). Shawn was also amazing! He knew that swamp really well and introduced us to his gator friends including Jack (the giant one), Tank (who's a she), Blondie (who might actually be a he) and we tried to spot Stevie Ray (the blind gator) but weren't lucky enough for a sighting that day. The two hour tour flew by with lots of cool encounters with gators of different sizes. It was also cool just to be able to appreciate the beauty of the nature around the area. It was sad to see the destructive force that Ida had because we saw many uprooted trees off to the side... Some looked really old. Overall, I wasn't super excited for a tour at first because reptiles and amphibians generally scare the crap out of me. I even made it clear to my friends that if anyone even jokingly tried to rock the boat, our friendship would be over! But this felt really safe and I had a lot of fun. Would highly recommend this place!

Sure they sell enough lights to turn an 87 Crown Vic into the Battleship Galactica. Sure they sell hoses you attach to your AC to shove down your shirt. But wait! There's more! For those of us who aren't cops, there is a whole lot to see. Guns - Barney's is a Block stocking dealer. Don't know what a Clock is? Move on please. I am not really into guns, but if I were, I would probably have bought like five from them. Flashlights - Call me a nerd, but I like flashlights. Flashlight technology has come such a long way in the last five years. I bought a small light that takes two lithium batteries and will literally light up half a block. It is awesome. Holsters - If you are a gun toting yahoo, or even one of those open carry nut jobs, they have a holster for you. Again, if I wasn't scared of guns, I would have bought like five or ten from them. Clothes - Want to look tacticool? They got your hook up. Pepper spray - Hey ladies? Yeah? You know you bad? Yeah. Oh wait. Sorry, I just started singing Travis Scott. Ladies, and men who wan't some pepper spray for your purse or European man bag? They've got you covered. Barney's has a lot more stuff than I have listed. If you're like me and not a cop, but like cool stuff, you should check Barney's out.

As the name implies, they cater to law enforcement officers (LEO's) ; however, any Joe Blow can walk in to browse. They carry all your typical LEO equipment such as boots, flashlights, clothes, holsters, ammunition and of course, firearms. You can shop for Sig Sauers, Berettas, Rugers, Kimbers and Walthers. But Barneys is known for selling Glocks and they sell more Glocks than anything else. In fact, their website states that "Barney's Police Supplies is one of the top 10 Glock dealers in Law Enforcement in the US". And in my opinion, no one is going to beat their prices on Glocks. This location is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 - 5:00, but don't let the lack of weekend hours dissuade you from coming here. Because what you get at Barney's is personalized service that is rare for a regional chain of stores. On top of that, you get professional assistance from people that know their craft. And their demeanor is very down to Earth and puts you at ease, especially if you are a layman and not in the LEO community. My initial contact with Barneys was made telephonically with Katie, who was patient, informative and professional. However, she had that certain charm and friendliness that drew me to the store, as I could immediately tell that this place was totally customer oriented. Upon my arrival at the store both she and store manager Melody Kennedy assisted me, and I could not have left a happier customer. I could have gone anywhere to make my purchase, and I did do some shopping around beforehand. However, I purposely saved Barneys for last as I heard that they were the best. Now that this "fact" has been confirmed, I'll never shop anywhere else.
