Initial calls for gut kitchen and adjacent bathroom renovation + removal of load bearing wall went…read morewell with Sabrina and Ray - they assured us they have done many similar projects in the area successfully and on time. From the many positive and detailed yelp/google/houzz/angi reviews that had great end result pictures, we were convinced to move forward. Sabrina turned around the estimate for labor and some materials allowance quickly along with separate helpful tiered pricing guidance PDFs for kitchen and bathroom finishes to be purchased separately. Tile guidance was a bit off and a few categories like vanity, counter, mirror, light fixture in bathroom and plumbing for kitchen were missing. Vendors showed us finishes across all price tiers so it took us an extra week to finalize selections. Unfortunately we were told this delayed the project by a month. We were asked to wait on the kitchen design until after the engineering work for removal of the load bearing wall and addition of shear walls. Since we had a choice on the location of the shear walls, we preferred to do the design in tandem. I used cabinets.com to create my own rendering of the kitchen layout we wanted and provided them the full dimensions. The day before the approved structural wall work was to begin they sent their own drawing which had the wrong wall locations. After talking to both David and Dayna we realized her and the designer were not brought up to speed on the engineering work. Dayna then setup a productive Zoom call with the designer directly and we got my drawing to be updated with a few suggestions and required spacing and panels. The biggest mistake in the project came from one of their subcontractors employees who removed the plastic cover over our basement sink and cleaned off tools and plaster in it clogging the drain. Bay State quickly sent the drywall guy back over to unclog it. The project took just under 4 months to complete. Bay State and their subcontractors apart from the sink issue did not cut corners, often went above and beyond, and completed top quality finishes. No up-charge on materials was another big positive. The actual work done by the plumber (Mr Fix-It), electrician (Marcus Quintino), tile guys, drywall guy, cabinets guys, floor guys, and painters (AJA Painting) was excellent and we are very happy with our new space. Marcio was the MVP of their team - always calm, listened attentively to our many questions, provided great suggestions, and constantly asked the subcontractors to clean up. If they forgot, he cleaned up himself. His wife also worked tirelessly all day cleaning up at the end of the project. Things constantly move around and change during construction and it was difficult to get a clear picture of the plan each day. Andreina and at the start Dayna heard from us every week and always answered the phone and tried their best to chase down answers from others and get us the latest information. The billing process is very straightforward and Andreina provided further detail on line items as needed. Jose was always positive and happy to pass along feedback from us to the office when he swung by. Sabrina provided helpful guidance at the start in choosing our cabinets, counters, and hardware. David continually helped move the project along and has ensured everything is to our liking while encouraging us to pass along any punch list items. I would recommend Bay State for their quality of work, integrity, and communication. My main constructive feedback is on the design process and keeping everyone in sync throughout the project on the latest information.

I love its modular design. The so-called experts say "high end" is using dry wall to match the home. What if you have plumbing problems? The basement requires access. You are very fortunate." We could not agree more. BER transformed our 130-year-old home with extraordinary skill and care. They stripped the old shingles and clapboards, applied multiple layers of protective barrier to the original walls, and installed new state-of-the-art composite clapboards and cedar shingles. The bottom course of shingles was individually notched to replicate the original detail, and the dentil molding was reconstructed by hand. The team also completely rebuilt our bays in PVC that, once painted, is indistinguishable from wood. Every line, corner, and transition is precise. They worked through extraordinary conditions--from 10-degree winter days to 100-degree summer heat--without ever compromising their focus, craftsmanship, or attention to detail. Joe Danz oversaw the project closely from start to finish. He communicated warmly and consistently with the three homeowners in our building, accommodated additional requests fairly, and remained committed to the work until every detail was right. Our neighbors--including two architects--stopped to admire the workmanship as the project progressed. Our home has been restored to its original beauty with durable materials and craftsmanship that should last far beyond the current owners. We are deeply grateful to Joe and his outstanding team at Boston Exterior Remodeling. They exceeded our expectations in every way.

The entire Our House team is amazing, I knew it was going to be a good fit from the initial…read moreconsultation. Steve knows what he knows (and what he doesn't stating he'll get back to you - which he actually does), knows he's got a strong team behind him (he's collected the best of best from years in the business and he'll tell you so - but he's not saying it in a way that comes across rude or a hard sell, he's just stating a fact) and everything supports that! After living in our house for 10 years I knew the kitchen could be better, I just didn't know how. I made it clear to Steve that I would need the options and associated cost laid out so we could make an informed decision, we knew the scope creep possibilities could be endless! Steve assigned us to Amy (the visionary and Alex whisperer) and Alex (the engineer, pro CAD user bringing Amy's visions to life) and from there we were off to the races. We ended up taking down a wall and removing the chimney, which led to moving heating, electrical, and some plumbing to the upper floors; we removed two windows and a set of French doors, replaced by one big window and a single door to the back deck. A BIG project, estimated to take 4-6 months, and they came in right at the 5 month mark! Another key selling point is they are familiar with and took care of the entire permitting process - which for anyone who lives in Somerville knows, is no easy task in our city. It was an explicit criteria I had as we were seeking bids. Reid was our project manager, he was on site almost every day and absolutely amazing in terms of addressing any questions. Pat was our safety officer, but also a PM of sorts - he made sure there was limited dust, and overall everything went smoothly because of his attention to detail. When there was a mishap with the dumpster and our relatively new paved driveway, Pat declared, "No dumpster!", they removed trash manually every evening and fixed the pavers at the end of the project. Kevin is a MASTER carpenter, super kind, smart, and generous with his time. When he asked me how I wanted the crown molding in a weird doorway alcove, I told him I had no idea! He walked me thru the options, was patient with all my questions, and shared his opinion what would look best. It's gorgeous. The best example, is we saved our unique door and window trim to incorporate into the new window & door. No one believes me when I say the new kitchen window trim is actually comprised of 6-8 pieces of trim! It's beautiful and a masterpiece! (Also Kevin and team listen to great music and would be awesome karaoke partners!) Brian (plumber), Wayne (HVAC), Joe (electrician) - also amazing. Answered all of my questions, their teams are very courteous and clean - no one entered the house without introducing themselves. And a shout out to Paige, the designer, who saved us countless hours by narrowing down options! We are in love with our countertops. But the biggest compliment comes from friends and family when they see the outcome - they all day the same thing (aside from its amazingly beautiful) it looks like it was meant to be! Thanks to Paige we were able to update & make our kitchen more function, without losing the period feel of the house which is now more open concept. Communication is key, and aside from the workmanship and skill of Steve and the entire Our House team, the fact that they listen and work WITH you is what makes them stand out. As other reviewers have stated, you get what you pay for. This was not the lowest bid, but what we got in terms of process management and importantly the END RESULT was well worth it. We are saving up for our next Our House project!!

We absolutely love working with Our House! If you like contractors that communicate well -- and…read morelisten well! -- you'll love them too. We've now hired them for several projects around our house: a bathroom renovation, a new retaining wall, a new basement foundation, a new set of stairs, and a huge attic renovation project including two giant new dormers installed. We've hired other contractors before for other projects in our fixer-upper, but once we found Our House, we've only worked with them since. OH is really good about doing what they say they'll do when they say they'll do it (while notifying you of any changes), and they're super responsive via email. It's clear that they take pride in the quality of their work, too. When we had an issue with water in the basement almost a full year after the foundation was poured, we emailed them about it and they were out the next day to see what they could do to fix it. Through all the work they've done for us, our project manager and architect were amazing about checking in with us every step of the way to make sure everything was exactly the way we wanted it. Furthermore, when you have lots of construction projects going on in the house you're living in, you don't realize up front just how dusty everything is going to be. It's impossible to contain ALL the dust, but man, do they do a really good job of trying to keep your living space clean. They contain the area they're working on behind a plastic zip wall, and more days than not, they vacuum/sweep the areas they had to track through your house so that they're keeping the mess behind the curtain. We also have two cats that we weren't willing to rehome while construction was going on, and OH put up extra zip walls to help us confine them to the first floor while they worked on the attic so the cats wouldn't get out or get in the way! OH may not be the lowest bidder for your project, but you definitely get what you pay for. They're honest, timely, and professional, and each and every time they've completed a project for us, the result is beautiful. I can't recommend them highly enough!

Sergio is smart, honest, hard working, a good problem solver, and really listened to us about what we wanted, even when we changed our minds about details along the way. Sergio did a great job of offering good ideas for layout, materials, etc, but also being very responsive to our ideas and feedback. He stayed in regular contact throughout the whole job, stopping by regularly, and finished the work very close to the original timeline (he said around 2 months, and it might've been 2.5 months, but we also added on a couple little things to the project). They accomplished more in one week than our first crew did in 2 months. Peter was truly invested in the project, and it was clear how much he cares for his clients and his crew. Every step in the process was a collaboration: Peter scheduled appointments between us and the electrician, HVAC crew, and plumbers so we could all walk through the house together and talk through what we wanted and what would work. Peter also made suggestions throughout the process that improved the plan and house in ways that never would have occurred to us. At one point, Peter's crew had the idea to move an original built-in cabinet to another wall in order to open up the dining room to the kitchen, and it changed the entire flow of the house in the best way possible. Visitors always scratch their heads in disbelief when we tell them that the built-in was moved - they insist it looks like it has always lived in that corner of the room! Peter uses the best materials for his builds, and the finishing work is outstanding. Oliver is an incredible carpenter, so our new stairs, kitchen casework, trim around the walls and doors, and tile work in each bathroom is absolutely gorgeous. The existing walls in the house were in bad shape after we removed the wallpaper, so Peter's meticulous painting team patched and repaired all of the walls before painting. The walls are now absolutely smooth and look brand new. The few times there were issues, Peter and his crew addressed them immediately - things were corrected by the following day. Our entire project was massive, and Peter coordinated the work of all of the subcontractors seamlessly so there was never a day that no one showed up to work. Peter's prices throughout the project were also reasonable, especially for the quality of work and materials that they included. Our finished home is more beautiful than we could have ever imagined - we are beyond happy and grateful to Peter and his crew.
