Dr. Sholer and his staff have been amazing every time I have come in. The first time I saw him, they did me in the same day I called for some severe tooth pain, which he was able to remedy right away. I became a regular patient and have been happy every time, even as someone who usually does not look forward to the dentist. Dr. Sholer provided great care during my pregnancy as well when I had super sensitive teeth, and his front desk staff were welcoming and willing to hold my baby at my appointment following his birth. Just had to write up an update: So we followed through with the original dental work plan devised by Dr.Sholer and I, as I mentioned on the original review. We broke down all that work in 3 separate visits, but managed to tackle 2 of those visits in a single 4-hour long marathon. It was the most pain-free dentist marathon I've had in my whole life. Only a booster anesthesia shot hurt, but understandable after 3 hours of keeping my jaw open. Other than that, I was thoroughly entertained with a direct-TV remote in one hand, and the saliva/suction tool in the other. The support staff were once again always on-point, and always proactive. If the doctor needed something, someone would be there to hand over that something exactly when it was needed. It was almost funny how sharply proactive his staff were. Tasks and procedures were very well coordinated and completed without surprises. Again, this is unheard of.. 4 hours at the dentist, and I walked out of there happy AND sane. The swelling went away by the next evening, and I didn't even need the prescription pain killer. Dr.Sholer must be an alien with advanced skills and technology. Or he is simply the very best dentist, which is a more likely explanation. Thank you again Doctor & team. read more

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DENTISTRY: I literally got 11 filings done today. By choice of course, because I do not like the sound of dental drills or the various tools they use. I wanted everything done in one shot. I had such a great experience. Prior to this appointment I had some deep cleanings done by Stephanie, who is great. My fillings were done by Dr. Sholer and Rosie who were both patient and made my comfort a priority. From the ladies at the front desk to all the staff aboard this Dentistry definitely deserves a 10 when it comes to customer service. My appointment was at 10 am today.. took about 3 hours...including breaks and time for numbing to kick in. Nobody likes going to have dental work done. If somebody tells you they like going to have dental work done, you shouldn't believe them, because they don't. I am somebody who, like everybody else on this entire planet, doesn't like going to have dental work done. I hate it in fact. It makes me go shaky and feel a bit sick. Today I had to go and have dental work done, which as I have stated, nobody likes, especially me. I was a mess this morning. I was terrified. But Doctor Sholer and his team are like dentistry angels. Sharlene and Danielle on reception make you feel like the most important patient they have ever had (unless they only do that with me, and I actually am the most important patient they have ever had, which I doubt). The Doctor himself is calm, thoughtful, understanding, takes his time, listens to you, and does everything he can to make you feel as calm as possible. Yes, he sometimes has to stick terrifying needles into bits of your mouth you really wish he wouldn't, and drill bits of your teeth away while you try not to sob like a baby, but that's not his fault. That's just because he's doing dental work, which nobody likes. He is, genuinely, the most caring and kind dentist I have ever known. His assisting staff are also wonderful, from the lovely girl who put the Olympics on for me while I trembled inhaling nitrous oxide to the two who do the cleaning and polishing who take their time to be interested in every aspect of your life, even if you're an English bloke with yellow teeth and a penchant for red wine and coffee. I'm sorry I can't remember your names, ladies, but you know you rock. To summarize, while I alongside everybody else in the entire world would rather do pretty much anything else than have dental work done, when you have to have it done, there is nobody better, in San Jose or anywhere in the world, than Doctor Sholer and his team. I am a person who doesn't usually look forward to going to the dentist... I was happy to find that the referral that I received from a friend to try out Dr. Sholer's office was right on. The office itself is very welcoming and the staff are VERY friendly and hospitable. When I arrived, I didn't know who my dental insurance carrier was, but the staff was able to look it up immediately and assure me that I was covered for the procedures that I was about to undergo. When I come in for a cleaning, I barely even have sit down to wait at all because they are always right on time. Great customer service. Christina Liddle, who cleans my teeth, is the most gentle dental hygienist that I have been to. I have very sensitive gums and have trouble keeping my mouth open for a cleaning due to the fact that I grind my teeth and clench at night. Ms. Liddle is very patient with me and never seems like she is in a rush to move onto her next patient. Dr. Sholer is very professional and insightful. He does not try and sell me on anything that isn't absolutely necessary and instead educates me on tactics to try for the prevention of cavities, etc. All in all, I am very pleased with Dr. Sholer and have and will continue to recommend him to friends and family. I live in Santa Cruz and was looking for a new dentist. A few friends recommended Jeff Sholer and so I made an appointment and got right in! I wasn't sure if i'd continue to drive that far for a dentist appointment, but it's totally worth it. Dr. Sholer was great, efficient, helpful. The staff is super friendly and professional. Billing and appointments are super easy. I still don't floss everyday, but I know that I should--because Dr. Sholer told me to. But he's not the type to judge me when he finds out I don't. read more

Here's a quick note to help out other Yelpers that may be looking for great dental services. The office staff is great. They follow-up very well, and make sure you're getting the info you need. They also are very helpful/flexible in scheduling/rescheduling appointments. The dental hygienist is nice, fast, and very gentle/skilled. (that's important to me) I've never been pressured to get extra services, but information is provided graciously for anything I've asked about. Its funny looking back to the dentist I had growing up and now putting it all together about how his teeth never looked clean nor did they ever seem the least bit straight. About a year ago I decided to search for a dentist on my own. I had no clue what signs one is supposed to look for when dentist-hunting. I figured the first criteria was to make sure that said dentist can accept the random insurance plan i have. ok, he does, and he is a great communicator, and he has great hours that work for the people with full time jobs. Each visit with Dr. Sholer has been great, and every aspect of the switching of dentists process has gone very smoothly. My mouth is a train wreck, but Dr Sholer has been BEYOND STUPENDOUS so far! I was not an existing patient, yet Dr. Sholer saw me on a moment's notice for a loose tooth I was concerned about. Following the extraction he referred me to an endodontist and periodontist to build a "special team" for my care. Before I could see the other two doctors I had a 20-year-old bridge come out - on a Sunday, no less - and Dr. Sholer came in to re-cement it. He has been nothing less than a delight and I trust him emphatically with the restoration and future health of my mouth. I recommend Dr Sholer to anyone that is in need of a VERY competent dentist, and one that treats his patients with respect instead of judgement. Plus he is gentle in all aspects of treatment, which cannot be left unstated. Sharlene, his office manager, is an absolute dream as well. Kind, caring, and willing to work the schedule as needed to fit you in, or call if a cancellation arises. Hard to believe, I'm sure, but I'm actually looking forward to an upcoming cleaning if the hygienist is anything like the rest of the office staff! I can't say enough about the friendly, sensitive, professional staff at Dr. Sholer's office. I have a lifetime of extreme dental fear under my belt, fear that led me to (surprise!) avoid the dentist, causing me to develop some extensive issues. Dr. Sholer has been nothing but kind and encouraging, never making me feel guilty or embarrassed for the issues I have let develop over the years. I first went to see Dr. Sholer when I needed an emergency root canal, and he could not have been more understanding. His entire team was sensitive to my intense anxiety and they made me feel as comfortable as possible during the visit. The doctor explained everything he was doing, ensured that I felt no pain, and did excellent work. The positive, reassuring experience I had has brought me back several times in the last several months to continue to work on getting my mouth healthy and problem-free. His front desk duo, assistants and hygienists are all wonderful. I feel like I've taken up residence in the dental chair, but honestly I am now (sort of) looking forward to the visits. High praise from a dentophobe! The whole team is so warm and friendly, I truly enjoy seeing them each time I go in. A friend of mine recommended Dr. Sholer to me two years ago, and he has done a crown replacement and a cavity for me with zero pain and zero discomfort. This man is truly the best that there is. I have been to a LOT of dentists, as I have moved around a lot. He is the best I've ever been to. He is very personable, thoughtful and extremely skilled at what he does. LOVE THIS OFFICE!!!! I can't put into words how amazing this office is! They are warm and inviting, and always make you feel comfortable. I have never loved the dentist ( who does?) especially after jaw surgery. Dr. Sholer is always so patient and kind, he explains everything, and knows that he has a big baby on his hands! ( haha ) Christine has always taken her time and given me a break when I needed it. The experience with braces was amazing and he was very educated on the best approach for my progress and now I am truly happy with my smile. I had no insurance when I saw this guy. They overcharge if you're a cash patient but I was desperate to get my tooth fixed. He seemed nice enough at first until my molar wouldn't stay numbed. Then he seemed to become annoyed. He took out the old fillings. Once it was out the tooth wasn't numb anymore. He gave me some more shots and when they wouldn't work he said you'll just have to deal with the pain I'll be done in a minute. A minute my ass! He took several minutes to finish all the while I felt every damn thing he was doing and it hurt like hell. On top of it the fillings have failed so I had to have a root canal on the tooth. read more

Highly recommended! This place is top-notch and Dr. Sholer is great. Super long-winded review below, so tldr; needed a new dentist, avoided going for two years, got tooth pain, found Dr. Sholer, had to get a root canal, despite the pain was the best experience I had ever had with a dentist office and will be back for all regular cleanings. ____________ My current job at a startup started with no dental benefits, just medical. Once they added dental about 6 months into working there, I still didn't make an appointment, even though it had been two years since my last cleaning. I also wasn't a fan of my previous dentist that I had been going to since grade school - the hygienists were rough, and the dentist himself didn't have the best bedside manner. I hadn't had any cavities in over ten years, so I wasn't too worried, and figured I'd find a new place closer to home eventually. Then, last month (May) I started having some dull achy tooth/jaw pain in my back molars. I was at the end of planning a wedding (date in early June), and work had really ramped up, so I had been clenching my teeth at night and during the day. I knew this, so I Yelped local dentists to find a place that good check it out, in case I damaged an old filling or something. Found Dr. Sholer's office on Yelp that evening, and sent in an appointment request through their website. Woke up at 3 AM with the pain being worse, so I called and left a message begging for an appointment asap. Charlene called me promptly the next morning, and I was able to come in within half an hour. Got some xrays, talked to Dr. Sholer who did some tests to figure out which tooth the pain was coming from, and he said there was nothing that was damaged, and the tooth might just be a little traumatized from my clenching. Best case scenario would be it going away on it's own if I stop clenching my jaw, so they gave me a temporary mouth guard to try, and sent me on my way with instructions to keep in touch if the pain stays the same of gets worse. This was on a Wednesday. The following Thursday it was pretty much the same, but by Friday afternoon the pain was much worse, and had turned into a sharp pain in one tooth, making it hard to eat and really do anything. Since their office was already closed, I called and left a message asking for an appointment as early as possible once the week started. I woke up Friday morning in so much pain that I emailed Dr. Sholer directly for any help he could possibly provide. He was kind enough to reply on Saturday morning, and after a few emails back and forth describing everything he was able to prescribe me some Tylenol with codeine to get me through the weekend until I could come in for an appointment. I was able to come in Tuesday, and ended up having to get a root canal, which I managed to schedule around a much-needed cleaning. The actual root canal procedure wasn't bad at all, then pain afterwards was killer (woke up every morning for the rest of the week feeling like I got slugged in the jaw), but overall the experience working with Dr. Sholer's office was wonderful. The office is clean, and nicely decorated. Their equipment seems new and modern. Everyone on the staff that I interacted with was super friendly and made me feel at ease. Dr. Sholer is a cool guy, and did a great job explaining things and answering my questions. I love this place, and will be back for my regular maintenance appointments. I've been in the US for 7 years and visited many dentists, Doctor Sholer is the first Dentist that make me feel comfortable and confident that I'll get great care! The entire experience was awesome from the moment that I set the appointment to the moment that I left his office. Dr. Sholer and his services are outstanding. We (my wife and I) have multiple appointments with him fixing holes and aging bridge and crowns. He was taking always our interests first, medical and financial sense, too. Prefect knowledge and deeply experienced, great attention to details and perfectionist in the results but leaving the final decisions, especially when it is sensitive financially, to the patient. I was looking to get braces done for a nice smile, so I looked on yelp and came across this office. I booked an appointment, came in for a consultation. As soon as I walked in, it felt like I just walked into my house. It had the homey comfortable feeling, there were snacks and drinks on a side table while you were waiting and the couch was definitely a couch I did not mind sitting on while waiting for the dentist. I filled out my paperwork, got ushered into a room, and soon after he walked in. The thing about the dentist is that I never liked going to one, but if it was mandatory to keep my teeth nice and clean then I would. But as soon as He walked in, introduced himself, he asked why I wanted to get braces, what I was looking for and what I wanted done. He was very informative, gave me several options, was an easy going guy, and I felt like I didn't have to be nervous about anything. Overall, my first trip to this office felt comfortable, felt easy going, his receptionists were super friendly. Easy to say I'm sticking with him and getting braces. read more

My husband referred me to Dr. Sholer and I'm writing this now that I've had a filling done and can comment on his skills. As a lot of the other reviewers have already mentioned, the front staff and hygienists are friendly and professional. I haven't felt pushed to do any special dental work. Cleanings have so far been quick and uneventful. This last cleaning, we did x-rays and Dr. Sholer recommended replacement of a filling that had chipped a good bit since the last time (I've noticed myself from flossing). It was recommended to minimize further degradation of the filling and to prevent the neighboring tooth from getting a problem. I agreed and the appointment was scheduled about 2 weeks out. The molar's filling was done very quickly, and it seemed like most of the time was spent waiting for the numbing to kick in fully. Two weeks later, while my tooth is still sensitive to pressure (can't bite anything harder than bread), the filling surface was polished right so the bite is ok, and I'm pretty happy with the work. An intern was there that day, and before having her come in, the hygienist got my consent first for the intern to assist Dr. Sholer. read more

Is there a box for 10 stars?? :) Wow! What an amazing experience! I was deathly afraid of the dentist, and I mean DEATHLY AFRAID after having a very traumatic childhood experience. I had put off being seen by a dentist for years, and as we all know, it catches up to you. I finally gathered enough confidence to call Dr. Sholer's office after being referred by another patient and reading Yelp reviews as I had some noticeable front teeth work that I wanted to take care of before a large work event. I called on a Monday and spoke to Sharlene who is truly a saint! She was able to get me in on the following day. As other Yelp reviewers have mentioned, Dr. Sholer is so patient and really takes the time to build your trust (especially with someone like me who has had bad experiences in the past). He goes over all the options without being pushy or persuasive one way or the other. He knew it took a lot of courage for me to walk into his office that morning and offered to do the work on my front teeth that was bothering me that day. Nothing was rushed and he made sure I was 100% comfortable and numb before starting any of the work. The front desk assistant Danielle even held my hand while Dr. Sholder was administering the shots (so sweet)! I could go on and on how this experience has turned my fears of the dentist and dental work into motivation and confidence moving forward.
