Jeff came highly recommended from a friend who bought a co-op in Jackson Heights several years ago, so when it came time to start our search, we knew where to start. Searching for a co-op is an iterative process -- unless you've bought in the neighborhood before, you aren't always aware of what the stock is, what's available, and where to find what you're looking for. I've lived in Jackson Heights for six years, and knew what areas I wanted to live in, but didn't know which buildings had 4 bedroom apartments (not many!), which ones have a 3 bedroom that is effectively a 2 bedroom with a maid's quarters, and which ones have hellish co-op boards that you wouldn't want to touch with a 10 foot pole. Jeff has an impressive encyclopedic knowledge of Jackson Heights, and knew exactly in which buildings we'd find what we're looking for, which listings had a maintenance fee that was just a tad high for what they were offering, and which units were actually good deals. We spent a few months looking at co-ops with Jeff to figure out what we wanted and what compromises we were willing to make, and through that process, Jeff was able to get a really good sense of what we were looking for. It's no surprise that when Jeff got excited about a listing ("I think you guys are gonna like this one," I remember him saying), he was absolutely right. The unit we ended up buying wasn't the shiniest unit with the fanciest renovation, nor was it a rock bottom great deal -- but it was just right for what we wanted. If you're looking to buy a home in Queens, do yourself a favor and call Jeff Putterman. We first met him last summer when my husband and I were looking at an apartment in Jackson Heights. He was the listing agent, but the unit had just gone into contract. Blast! But he was quick to find us other options, respected our limits of what we could swing financially, and regularly forwarded me new listings to look over. Within a couple of weeks, he forwarded us the perfect apartment in Woodside. He met us at the open house, and when we told him we were really interested, he was clear and concise about how to go about putting in a bid. Throughout a very stressful and frustrating bidding war (the listing agent was a dolt, so it was extremely important to have Jeff working for us), he was the sane, sensible, and fun person in our corner we desperately needed.
