6/8/26. I am here for the free Monday movie which is very nice of them. Unfortunately, a filthy, scumbag bartender had to ruin my experience. I usually get 2 Pabst beers. They are $3. Last time i was here the bartender who is also her this time charged me $7.69. I thought they must've changed the price and there were people behind me, so i just paid the $7.69 and left a dollar tip. Tonight,I checked the menu. PBRs are $3. She said they automaticaaly charge a 20% tip and tax. I said - without any notice that a tip of 20% is included - so people double tip ypu? She said it was just what they do with a smirk on her face. I can't express my contempt for this bartender and this place's mgmt in words. What a horrible way to ruin a nice thing. Isn't RR Martin a billionaire? read more

We're lucky that a place like this exists. We saw a bad 80's fantasy movie on a Sunday night for $5, while drinking wine and eating salami with a crowd who all laughed out loud along with us at the parts of the film that weren't supposed to be funny. It was a special shared experience you can't get just anywhere. The seats are new and the sound system is crystal clear. The theater only seats about 75-ish if I had to guess. It's intimate and cozy. They offer a full bar and a concession counter with drinks, snacks, and popcorn. The popcorn is doused with real butter! I watched them melt sticks of it before they poured it on. They also have a respectable selection of seasoning for your popcorn ranging from salt to green chile to cheddar cheese. Their signature cocktail list is inventive and Ryan was a very attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly bartender. We ordered a charcuterie platter, which is served on a small tray you can easily set on your lap while watching a film. The cured meats and cheeses were fair in quality, but head and shoulders better than your standard theater fare. They do charge an automatic 20% gratuity to help their employees. Don't be a dick and complain about it, just know that you're helping the employees earn a living wage, and supporting the arts scene at the same time. You should regularly be tipping well in any case. Lots of GRRM memorabilia around without being in your face. Go support your local arts! Go see a show! read more

This is an extraordinary theater. I've visited numerous times, including for late-night screenings of classic sci-fi and horror movies, as well as some literary presentations you couldn't find anywhere else (George RR Martin interviewing Joe Hill?!). More recently, I led two field trips of high school students to the Jean Cocteau for private screenings. Marianna, David, and the entire team at the cinema were wonderful -- from their assistance booking to their welcoming accommodations for all the students. I highly recommend -- whether you're just checking out Santa Fe, or a local looking for a venue to host your event. read more

Very small house, but it has a great vibe. And of course your average movie theater is not owned by a blockbuster novelist, and does not usually contain a bookstore and a bar. Walking inside I saw the entry way to walk through. It's not a boring straight line like other places. By the end of the walkway, I ran into a concession space that was well lit. You couldn't miss it. The people who worked there were friendly. The room that the event took place was a nice space and very clean. No popcorn left on the floor, which was impressive. Idk if I missed a sign or something but the cashier didn't mention it. I don't mind tipping but tipping yourself an extra $8 for getting me popcorn? That just bugged me. Anyways. According to my research, this is one of Santa Fe's most beloved theaters. It was recently purchased by author, George RR Martin, and appears to be in splendid shape to continue dishing out great foreign and indie films along with it's wide variety of famous popcorn toppings (brewer's yeast, chili powder, tamari, parmesan cheese, cinnamon-sugar..) Student and senior prices! Burritos on the menu! The whole place is beautiful. Tiny kiva, glass and tile work, black and white photos in the lobby. Enjoy some unique films in this historic, single screen, eclectic theater. Also, Robbie the Robot from Forbidden Planet is there. Just...just go! read more

A great independent movie theater that blesses the city of Santa Fe with alternative, experimental, low-budget and throwback films at affordable prices. The George RR Martin connection is more than just a curious connection as he leverages his star power to create awesome events with important people. You can also buy signed GoT merchandise in the lobby. There's a snack bar, and also a bar bar, though not one to rival Violet Crown's tap selection. I saw The Interview here, as well as the director's cut of The Act of Killing (followed by live Skype Q&A with the director), and last night, a tribute screening of Mel Brooks' classic Blazing Saddles. It's always a good time here and the city's best and brightest make it out for the shows. read more

Oh my gosh! What a gem in Santa Fe. We watched National Lampoons Christmas Vacation there and enjoyed dinner too. The place was packed early. Though we weren't late by any means, next time we will get there early. We showed our tickets, got our plates and got in the food line. Once we got our food, we went to the theater to get our seats and then one of us got drinks. The drinks were ok, but the food was pretty tasty. It was a great experience. This is one of the coolest places I have been to in Santa Fe (and in my top three for all of New Mexico). The employees are outstanding, the prices are more than reasonable, and the showings are "cult following" worthy. Evan makes THE BEST mocktails I have ever tried in my life, and my friend said the wine was delicious. The selection of toppings for the popcorn alone makes you feel like you're at an upscale private event... not even exaggerating. Ok so we took a family trip to Santa Fe by RailRunner. After spending the day walking around Santa Fe it was time to go home. So we headed to the station. We were quite early for our train so my mom and I decided to get some refreshments. Both my mom and decided to get some hot tea. I love the cozy vintage feel of this place and love that there was an old movie playing! I'm a huge fan of vintage movies. Although we unfortunately didn't stay for a movie had to catch a train home. The good thing about this place is that it is located within walking distance of the RailRunner station. With it being so close to the station it's nice for those people who don't like the mainstream snack places. Which I myself like the smaller snack places. The one thing that made this a 3 star review was the fact that the kid behind the counter was more focused on talking to friends than helping customers. I get it the place is a bit slow and not a lot of people were there but hey I'm there so please a little courtesy goes a long way. Not saying you have to be super focused on me but when I'm getting something please don't treat me like an annoyance to you. Other than that this is a very pleasant place and I hope to return for a movie. read more

Nice little theatre. Its only one theatre and therefore one movie at a time but I like the intimate old fashioned feel of the place. It has a good quality screen and they play unique independent movies. Seemed to be in good shape and the people working were friendly. Only issue is its not very easy to find parking. This is a great little gem in the heart of Santa Fe! I wish I had a theater like this in San Diego. The cinema is owned by George RR Martin and he surprised us by coming to the showing of the Interview that we saw here on Christmas Day! He introduced the show and spoke out about his independent cinema and his family and friends worked hard at opening the theater on Christmas Day. Super reasonably priced at only $7.00 for the matinee versus the standard $11 or $12 for a chain theater. Also only about 128 seats so it is tiny but you don't notice it at all with the great sound and screen quality. I would definitely go back here anytime I am in town! read more

The kids who worked there had this uppity air of snobbery, as if they were film students who too good to work there and should be out making films. In your dreams, kids. I came here on a rainy late afternoon to watch "Love Between the Covers", a really phenomenal documentary about the romance novel business. There was a Q&A after with two authors that were featured in the film, Celeste Bradley and Susan Donovan, who were intelligent, inspiring, and genuine. They were also very generous and gave the audience some of their books for free that they happily signed for us. The theatre was cozy, intimate, and everything a large theatre is not. But you know what? It's totally okay that the screen wasn't huge or the seats didn't tilt back. This theatre offers a completely different experience. I got a small popcorn and drink which set me back $6 total, and they were actually a normal serving size. Real butter, and an assortment of different seasonings (Cinnamon Sugar? Drool). The Jean Cocteau has finally reopened and we have the author George RR Martin to thank. It's great to have the theater open again and they're playing a very interesting mix of films, local music shows, community events, and even free screenings of Game of Thrones episodes. Customer service at Jean Cocteau left a little to be desired at first, but it's become consistently better and better over time. The Cocteau claims to have the best popcorn in Santa Fe, and it appears they do! There are all of the ubiquitous toppings (yeast, garlic, parmesan, etc), and that makes us happy! In terms of treats, there are mainstream candies (Milk Duds, etc) and a few local treats to be had from The Chocolate Maven. They do serve coffee and herbal tea, and the full bar is an awesome addition on par with theaters in Europe. Over all, the theater has some intriguing programming, comfy seats, excellent sound, a great bar, community events, and increasingly improved customer service. read more

Ok since this was the first thing that I saw under other reviews (closed In 2006) the theater has since reopened and is owned by Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin. The theater is small with only one screen but they make up for that with their great popcorn, pizza and not to mention full bar! It also come with perks of having George own it such as annual showings of the previous season of GoT, and premier before the new season that they have done for the last 2 years now. I shall return time and time again to this theater that is out of the norm. read more

This is a charming little establishment owned by George RR Martin. If you are a fan of his work, you will love this spot. My husband and I stopped by on a Wednesday night, which happened to be game night and were given a quick informal tour by an employee and then welcomed into a board game by a group of regulars. It seemed like a very happy place to spend some time. Everything they have in stock for purchase is autographed and we were told that there are certain things that are only sold at the theatre. It is also a spot for touring authors and directors and we were told that all of the goods they carry from other artists are signed as well. We spotted a book by Junot Diaz, among many other great authors. Definitely worth a stop on any trip to Santa Fe! read more

An absolute gem of an old fashioned, small, Art Nouveau European theatre. Small (I think under 100 seats?), with a fantastic array of films of all sorts. A changing exhibition of artwork in the lobby makes for interesting waiting times. Full bar, too - and gorgeous deco doors over it! (Try to get there before it opens to see them.) The popcorn is real, old-fashioned popcorn, with real butter (I saw them melting the sticks, couldn't believe it!) Lots of old-fashioned candy, too. And of course, since it's owned by George R R Martin - which I did not know when I first went - loads and loads of memorabilia, from Game of Thrones figurines to signed books by everyone from Neil Gaiman to Kelly Link. A fantastic cross section. The theatre itself could use a little help when it comes to presentation - better sound, better lights - but realistically, who cares when the films are so great? They've recently begun adding music to the mix, with local talent and a few heavy hitter imports. Really a gem. I wish we had something like this where I live! My one complaint had been their website - to be fair, maybe not so bad for a teenager, but for my eyes, it was really hard to read and navigate. However, I just tried it a few days ago and it's fine now, though I didn't try to purchase tickets again yet. Kudos to Mr. Martin and his team for making this place a potential landmark! Things I'd like to see: -- More presentations of music along with interviews. It's rare that you can see a musician "in the flesh" just fifteen feet away, or ask them a question. I'd love more Q&A's and the like. -- High caliber musicians. Love that they're bringing in local talent, but Santa Fe has been lacking a place for "serious music" forever. What about a solo cello? String quartet? Small classical series? I'd be glad to pay for a series just to expose my family to live music in such a small setting. -- What about one man/one woman shows? Surely they're not horribly expensive to put on. I really love the level of caring about the old films and quality these people show, too. Just a great addition to an already great town. read more

Such a cool old theatre. It felt like such a delight coming here to watch "The Interview"! I see over a hundred films a year, and will go to any cinema showing something I want to see. For what it is, and what it shows, the Jean Cocteau earns 5 stars. As a cinema, though, it's uncomfortable, tiny, with a tiny screen about the same size as the HD projection screen I have at home. So it generally has to be a special event or exclusive showing for me to go to the JCC. I do appreciate how JCC maintains reasonable pricing on concessions - compared to highway robbery cinemas like Regal 14 or Violent Crown. read more

Yaaa was there on monday to see game of thrones mmmkaaay.. Mr and Mr- Rainbow Bright Door filter had a atrocious attitude. The event was advertised as show up at the gate for first come first served. Mkkkaaaay. Jon with grease stains on his shirts, jean, and a due-rag barked out that it they was closed for öur kind" and mmm yeah. they had as lowly workers decided to only let people with numbers in that been there at 4pm. They they then anounced to me and the 300 people that we'd have known if we had been "in the know" that he'd "think about" (his words) to be worthy of enjoying our evening at Cocteau Theater-mmkaay--- that's simply deplorable. The person that I gather was his handler was just as lovely. Thus the night was a wash. read more

A fantastic little place! My fiance and I went there for a showing and book signing for The Last Unicorn. We had never been here before and were very happy to see that it is only a quick walk from the train station to the theater. It is very tiny, but it definitely has personality! I was surprised to see that it had a bar, too! As this was a special event, the show was sold out and there was a delay from a previous showing thus we all had to wait outside in line before being allowed into the theater. Obviously, not everyone was happy with this but I felt that the staff at the cinema and the tour staff were very apologetic and were doing everything they could to make our wait worth it. Once in the theater, it was clean, cozy, and very unique. It took about another hour before the movie actually started as the hosts were waiting for everyone to get their concessions and drinks before beginning the film. Most were okay with this, however again there were a few complaints (mostly from people who were not familiar with the film and its cult following). Again, the cinema staff and tour staff were very apologetic and did their best to keep us entertained. I had a fantastic time at this cinema and my fiance and I will DEFINITELY be back for future showings! read more

I went to see Forbidden Games here recently. I did not know the film, but had been wanting to visit this theater for a long time. I did some research on the film and was excited to see it. It was the first screening of the day and I used my American Express card. This was the first transaction they've had with Am Ex, as they just started accepting it. The lady who sold me the ticket escorted me to the snack bar and told the gal behind it to give me a free popcorn as reward for being their first Am Ex customer. I wasn't planning on getting popcorn, as I had just had lunch, but I thought this was cute and nice of them, so I accepted a small popcorn. I then ordered a soda to compensate them for the cost of the popcorn and when I started to pay for it, she said "No charge". I was quite surprised, I really impressed with how nice everyone was. The movie house itself is very small, but well decorated. Pleasing colors all around. The film itself was wonderful. I'm a bit of a film buff, so it's always fun to discover a film that I had no knowledge of. I do have one big complaint though - I was the only person in the theater!!! Please people of Santa Fe, support this wonderful theater!!! I live in Albuquerque, but I plan to visit this theater as often as possible.
