Oof, this place is rough. The staff was nice, but it was near impossible to walk through. There are stacks & stacks of books listed "trade in progress." The "new out" table is slim & not very new to say the least. I wanted to like this place & did find a few books on my trip to bring home but the environment is anything, but exciting, more like anxiety inducing. I had enjoyed coming here for several years prior to this, but as it stands now the inventory is beyond their own control, the store is ridiculously difficult to navigate through (and I used to go to the infamous, disorganized, and uncategorized Barber's Books in Fort Worth many years ago, so I'm acquainted with "difficult" stores), and I kept being moved about amid the aisles by their own staff while I was trying to search out things. Two books immediately caught my eye as soon as I entered from the mall, but I was summarily shoo-ed away as they hadn't processed the books yet. I have many less maddening and more productive places for my book crawls - so I'm marking this location off my list. If you've never been here and you love books, it's probably a "must see," but I've found that it doesn't hold up any more for repeat visits. read more

Lots of books and I do mean lots of them. The problem is that there were literal piles and stacks of books blocking the book shelves. It made it impossible to get to certain sections of the store. It's as if they don't have a storage area out of view to store all the excess books. All the shelves are full, too. Time to hold off on new inventory for a while, one would guess. The employees were very friendly and helpful. However, I deducted two stars because of the clutter inside the store and inability to search their inventory properly. Overall, check out the store if you have time and patience to do a treasure hunt through random piles of books or shelves (if you can get to them). Tons of books available. read more

The owner provided personal service and has a rich selection of books at a great value! These books are clearly his joy! Discussed Russian literature and it was a joy to learn from him! Highly recommend this shop. His shop assistants were also knowledgeable and a pleasure to speak with. read more

A used and new bookstore inside the DeVargas Center. Books are piled on each other in stacks which you can meander through. Books are organized by section, and there's a children's and YA section if patrons bring their children with them. Most of the books are used and a decent price. You can't go looking for something specific, though that's half the fun to wander and see what you'll find. There is this Santa Fe location, then one located in Taos. There were many boxes being sent up to the Taos location which were blocking small alcoves in the store. If I had a suggestion, it would be for that work to be done in the back so customers can access books; I was not able to enter the alcove I wanted to because of shipping boxes. Overall, an eclectic local bookstore that is fun to browse, if cluttered. read more

Great bookstore! Wow! It is like a wonderland. I came with my family. Everyone found two or more books that they were excited about. The shelves are clearly labelled and well-organized. Store is amazing, huge unexpectedly inside the mall. Tons of selections for both fiction and non fiction. Art, philosophy and gardening sections are huge. Descent size cookbooks and science sections. I wish the store was designed better because some books are stacked vertically and hard to pull. Another great book store in Santa Fe. They should be working hard to keep such huge amount of books which should be well respected and appreciated by local Santa Feans and visitors from all over. I do. I have never had a worse experience at a bookstore in my entire life. I had an afternoon with no pressing engagements dogging me and a boat load of cash that I was ready to blow on books. I also have two major injuries that have dogged me for my entire adult life-- a blown out knee and severe, acute migraines that can crop out of nowhere. Anyhow, I had a stack of books that I wanted to buy. I sat at the big table in the middle of the store and started to look through the books to decide what I wanted to buy. I had to sit because a) my knee was starting to scream with pain and b) I was starting to have a migraine and my medication makes me feel lightheaded. But whatever, I'm used to it, I can survive. So I'm sitting and making decisions about my purchases when I hear someone asking me if I could move my books. I was confused and so I moved my books on the table. Two grown male employees then told me that I needed to get up because they were moving the table. They didn't offer me any help, offer me another place to sit, didn't use any basic manners. Nothing. It sounds like a small thing but they were super, super rude. I got up and was confused for a second. And then I was angry. If I'm going to spend 200% more than what I would spend online I expect the bare minimum of professional behavior. I just tossed my books on a shelf and left. Don't bother with this place. It's a total disappointment and a joke. read more

i'm concerned with all of the many boxes of books stacked to the ceiling, and boxes of books everywhere on the floor that haa to be a safety issue! High turnover of employees, several were my favorites. Sadly, I've witnessed unkind treatment towards the employees when I'm there read more

I could live here. They are in the middle of sorting, moving, and organizing, so everything is sort of stacked everywhere, but it still a well lit, inviting space. I found a couple of first editions I have been looking for, and at a fair price. The owners are friendly and made me feel right at home. I look forward to many visits in the future. Decent bookstore, decent selection, but the lady running it is sketchy and seems a bit entitled and is rude to customers, and the employees seem to enjoy playing whatever weird game she's into. Kind of creepy, really. They have ripped off friends trying to sell books there on consignment, both writers with their books, and readers wanting to sell their old books. I know many local writers and have heard this several times, as well as from friends who are just wanting to sell some of their used books. That doesn't sit well with me. For used and remainder books (that's pretty much all they do) it's okay but not amazing. If this is about the best we have here, no wonder people prefer ordering over the internet. Worth visiting, I suppose, but don't expect to be blown away. And while you may be treated well, you may not be, it's a crapshoot. As much as I want to support local independent businesses, the demeanor of this place can be off putting and make me wonder why. read more

These folks have been incredibly good to me. When my dad passed away I had tons of books and CDs to rehome. They usually have a limit as to how many items can be brought in for credit at one time; they were gracious and accommodating given the amount of material I brought in. The staff is knowledgeable, and there are great finds to be had. Also, they are dog friendly, with treats at the counter! read more

I love bookstores and may have spent 2 hours in this one before purchasing 3 books. Unfortunately I got distracted by the clerk, wanting me to get a loyalty card, and left my wallet on the counter, with all my cash and my "life" in it. I walked to Starbuck nearby, and quickly realized I left my wallet in the bookstore. I walked back in the store, and saw the strange expression on the face of one of the clerks. I asked both about my wallet, as there was not a chance, he didn't see it. Both clerks were still behind the counter, and I was stunned to hear I have not left anything on their counter. Not only I don't believe them, but I won't ever patronize this store again. I immediately filed a police report relating my experience. I sent two emails to the owner, but didn't hear back. I love this store. In a town with only a handful of bookstores its great to find one with a decent selection. I love when i find a good book on the free rack also. Only thing is genre specific, i.e. horror, sci-fi etc. Could be a bit bigger. Great store overall read more

Great selection of books from mainstream to indie, stuff you'd never expect to run into, from Tennessee Williams bios to Southwestern esoterica to anything you can imagine. Nice friendly staff and great location at De Vargas Mall since they moved from the Sanbusco Center, conveniently located next to folk art shopping, groceries and the great Jinja Singapore noodles restaurant! read more

In the age of dying bookstores I was really surprised the woman working here took such a rude tone & manner on when I asked for help looking for books I came in search of! She talked to me like I was stupid bc I didn't know how to locate the books on my own! Never going back! Plenty of other good bookstores in town anyways. read more

Don't consign any books with this place. You won't get paid. Nice enough people on the surface, but really just a rich white woman who does it for something to do. Have known many employees and there is a high turnover rate, according to them, it's because the owner is too hard to deal with. Not a surprise. Selection is good, but sometimes one must weigh the selection against the attitude. Would start going again if they paid me for what they sold of mine. But since they owe me money and dodge me, why would I want to give them MORE money? Currently, they are thieves. There are other bookstores and I would rather go elsewhere now, though at one time I would have said it was the best in town. Shame. read more

this G.S. fellow is totally wrong. I think I was browsing in the bookstore when one of the workers was trying to placate him (quite patiently and kindly, I might add) on the phone. Strange. But... they have an incredible selection of used and remainder books at, of course, greatly reduced prices. If you don't mind a little marker stroke, you have a perfect, unread, crisp edition. They support the community by holding readings by local poets and authors and are extremely kind and amenable. They also have a frequent buyer card! read more

I phoned op. cit. yesterday to see if a title was in. The owner said no, but she expected it soon. It came about 20 minutes later and she called back. I was able to put a copy of a wonderful book in the hands of friends who were leaving town this morning. It's a friendly place with business-like booklovers, everyone who works there! read more

Went into Op.cit yesterday, and it was such a happy passage through that door. Haven't been so completely at home in a shop for years. It smelled of the written word -- interesting, soft, a promise of something good in the air. Wonderful books in every direction, selected by a someone who obviously knows and loves the books. Comfy chairs to read a bit while you browse. Dear old friends tucked in on the shelves, side-by-side with mysterious strangers. It was a bit of heaven. Probably everybody in Santa Fe but me already knows this store; I stumbled across because they just moved to DeVargas mall, and I was there Christmas shopping, and there it was, a Christmas Miracle. Just in case somebody else has a yearning for an old-style book shop, and you didn't know about Op.cit, I thought I would post this. Very nice bookstore.. Staff always patient and kind when we've called looking for a YA title for my daughter or brought books in to trade. Good replacement for Borders, which always seemed more about selling junk than actual books. You have to be a bit crazy to open a bookstore in this digital age, but I hope SF supports them and they do well. read more

This is, hands-down, the best book store in Santa Fe. I just got back to San Francisco after a visit, and it's better than any bookstore I can think of here too! They're pretty new because I hadn't found them on my previous visits. They have a mix of new and used books, and great deals on remainders and cards, and a really good collection of first editions. I think his is the place to go for modern firsts. Strong fiction, cookbooks, mysteries, a solid art section. A lot of their books are available online. It's just a fun place to browse, got a quirky point of view, visually interesting and you feel you can find something in every price range. Worth a trip but check out the address first because rumor has it they're moving to a bigger space closer to the plaza. read more
