Bacon, cheese & tomato omelet, at JDT's Brickhouse in Thomaston, CT.
Tom D.

Finally got a chance to come back to JDT's Brickhouse for breakfast. We walked in at 8:15am this morning, place was moderately busy for that time on a Sunday, so there were booths open. I ordered the full stack of Cinnabon French Toast off the breakfast specials (w/ a side of sausage), my wife ordered a bacon, cheese & tomato omelet w/ home fries. LONG wait for our food to come out. Like about 30 minutes. When our dishes finally arrived at the table, I was underwhelmed with what I saw. Basically my breakfast was just normal french toast with copious amounts of vanilla and cinnamon poured on top of it. Very heavy handed with vanilla & the cinnamon, it was edible, but I wasn't thrilled, that's for sure. My wife's omelet, on the other hand, was decent, and her home fries were tasty. My sausage side wasn't the Jimmy Dean variety, so at least that was a positive. The staff was very attentive this morning, but honestly, I felt that they were only friendly to "the regulars". We were never asked how everything was, but they lingered at other tables having conversation. Total bill (with tax) came out to $23.82 Overall, I can't see a return visit to JDT's Brickhouse again. Been there twice (once for dinner, and now once for breakfast), and with all the other choices in the area, I don't see a reason to come back for mediocre food. IMO, JDT's Brickhouse is a weak 3 Star rating.

We have always had great luck with JDTs for pizza. Their food is usually great and the service is friendly. Unfortunately the service has been sub-par lately (food is not ready when it was supposed to be, and the lady at the register called my boyfriend "kid" - he is a 30 year old bald man...) The pizza was terrible; so soggy we couldn't even pick it up and we needed to use forks. This was especially disappointing because we have always loved their pizza in the past... they are our go-to spot in Thomaston. Hopefully this doesn't become a trend for them.

Let's just say I wasn't sure - so I avoided it. Went in tonight as I was dying for a simple burger and didn't want all the trappings of other places around from an investment standpoint. Boy, was I glad I did. I grew up in NJ - diners are a religion. This, to me, was a nicer (yet still casual and welcoming) diner. There's no neon and stainless steel to let me think it was a diner - but it's the best of a family-style restaurant and the diner we all know and love. Service was simply fantastic. Friendly, prompt, fun/funny. Atmosphere comfortable and not pretentious. Food: I had a simple cheeseburger and rather than fries, took them up on their offer for a small bowl of soup. All - exactly what I had hoped. Cook on the medium rare burger was clinically perfect. Meat to bun ratio was spot on. Hot, juicy. Terrific. Giving four stars in its category today as I want to dive deeper into the menu. I want to try their coleslaw, and pickles, and a chicken strip, fries, onion rings/straws before I hold it truly against a classic diner. But let's put it this way - I can't wait. Ps. Server said they change their specials 2x a day!!! Come for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Don't let the sign fool you

Onion rings were in a nice batter, not frozen for sure. The coleslaw was refreshing. Our waitress, Amber, was very attentive, intuitive and great suggestions. "On the Black Rock is where I spend my time Writing down…read morememories or writing my rhyme On the Black Rock is where I like to go After a long night, home from our show" (O.A.R.) I haven't reviewed much in Thomaston. I'm pretty sure the only entry I have was for the town's historical marker, and that was back in 2014. So, when my buddy and I ended up in Thomaston for a wake yesterday, that gave me a reason to add a second Thomaston review, courtesy of our lunch visit to the Black Rock Tavern and Restaurant. It's a quintessential neighborhood bar and restaurant conspicuously located on Main Street. It is set up in the typical way -with a sit-down dining room on the left and the bar on the right. Black Rock takes up a pretty large space because it also has a banquet room. We sat at the bar, grabbed two beers ($5 for a Naragansett and $8 for a Guiness) and chit-chatted with our friendly bartender Maureen before we checked out their food menu. Black Rock had very nice food choices, ranging from appetizers to salads to wings to mains to burgers to sandwiches. I decided on a BBQ Beef Quesadilla ($21) with braised beef, melted cheddar jack cheese, pico, salsa, sour cream and a small salad on two grilled flour tortillas. It was yummy and a pretty big portion, so two of the four wedges came back home with me. My friend ordered a BRT Smashburger ($18) with a $3 side of cole slaw. He must have really enjoyed it because he turned back an empty plate to Maureen. If you really enjoy neighborhood type bar/restaurants, you will definitely enjoy a visit to the Black Rock tavern.
