Before I could respond, he was more adamant, saying 'cheaper pool down street'! I asked to use the restroom as I drove an hour to get there and left! Their outdoor patio is perfect for leashed and friendly dogs, with tables & chairs, a fantastic The Simpsons TV show mural, and a couple of cozy covered nooks. We were lucky to be served by the awesome bartender Chris, who happily chatted with us about our favorite bourbons. It is a full bar with some genuinely interesting options, including Eric LeGrand bourbon whiskey. His story is as powerful as the pour: after a career-ending injury at Rutgers, he has gone on to become a motivational speaker, entrepreneur, and a member of the New Jersey Hall of Fame. If you come here on a weeknight (eg. Sunday-Thursday), you are coming here at the best time in my opinion. There are usually only 1 or 2 tables at most in use on those days. However, if you come here on a Friday night at around 8 or later, you might be waiting for a table, as it is quite busy on Fridays for some reason. The only 2 times I had ever had to wait for a table/leave because it was so busy was only on Friday nights. Even still, you still have a decent chance of getting a table. Unlike most pool halls, where there is a ton of drinking going on and loud music, there is always a nice family friendly environment here at Billiards Lucy. It is nice and quiet, while still being lively. There are about 10 or so 8-foot tables, 4 9-foot tables, carom, darts, ping pong, and more here. A pro tip is to check out Billiards Lucy on Facebook, as there they post updates like upcoming tournaments, new hours, tables, or anything else. Their Number One Burger is a cheeseburger with pork roll and was definitely an enjoyable meal. As I said, this is a neighborhood type bar and the staff and customers were friendly and made this an even better experience. We need neighborhood bars like one. Places without pretense and a good place to come and have a drink, maybe a bite to eat. It is a good place for friends to celebrate or to come and brood over a beer. The atmosphere holds no fancy overtones. It is a bit dark, maybe a bit dingy. This just adds to the overall positive atmosphere. This place isn't about any kind of formality. It is the neighborhood place where the people in the neighborhood can gather and just be themselves. The Number One Bar & Grille is a great part of this community and is just one of the places that makes a group of houses into a community. I woukd definitely recommend this establishment.

A short walk later, I found myself at Destination Dogs, a place I had seen in photographs that suggested capaciousness. In reality, it is smaller.  This is not a complaint, just an observation.  I remember once hearing something about the contents of small packages. At 12:30 the place was full. Packed with humanity and appetite. I was seated quickly, as if someone had anticipated my hunger in advance. From the bar came the sound of construction crews discussing their midday rituals. Apparently this is where they come on Fridays, to repair themselves while they repair the city. It explained everything. Service was swift and attentive, a minor miracle given the crowd. I began with a Scotch egg, an item that seemed to have wandered in from another story entirely. I ordered it for that reason. I had always imagined my first Scotch egg would be eaten in an English pub under low ceilings and older regrets. Instead, here it was. Perfectly crisp, warm, and generous. The universe does not ask for permission. Then came the main event. The menu is an atlas of hot dogs. Domestic. International. Proteins in tube form arranged like possibilities. There is even an invitation to build your own, which I accepted. I attempted to recreate a favorite from Crif Dogs, a thing called the Spicy Redneck. Bacon wrapped dog. Pickled jalapenos. Coleslaw. Simple in theory. Destination Dogs improved upon it in every way that matters. The bacon crisped with purpose. The jalapenos spoke clearly. The coleslaw behaved. The hot dog itself seemed proud to be there. All of this, plus a 16 ounce beer, cost me about twenty five dollars with tip. A small price for order in a chaotic universe. Five stars. Not because perfection exists, but because this comes close enough to make the argument.
