The decorations in this restaurant are really vivid and colorful. The price is a little bit steep but they give you a lot for this price. My vegetarian burrito was almost the size of two hands and it was very delicious. The tall Horchata drink was of very good quality. I love this cinnamon milk drink so much and it's excellent here. This place is delicious and pretty authentic Mexican food. I ordered the pupusa and the steak tacos. Pupusa is just 1 piece and delicious. Their steak tacos come in 3s. The meat is flavorful. The tacos came with beans, rice, lettuce and sour cream. I wish I went back before I left Winnipeg. The place itself is cute with colorful paintings on the wall. They have a lot of seating. It wasn't too busy when I went on a Wednesday around dinner time. Service is quick too. My guy ordered the veggie enchilada I believe and he enjoyed it as well! Great lunch place as it's only about a 5 min drive from Portage & Main, just over Disraeli and just past Hespler. I'm not familiar with the area so I missed JC's Tacos on my first pass through. It's located in an old post office building with no signage on the building (it still reads "Post Office" - see pic). Though there is a sign that sits on the grass in front of the restaurant but I was focused on looking at the address and missed it. It's a sit down restaurant but first you go to the counter, order, pay and then find a table. The interior space is filled with 6 round tables with 5 chairs each in this brightly colored room. The tables and chairs are beautifully hand carved with bright images of Mexico. There's even a teeny tiny section where you can purchase some basic pantry items like hot sauce and canned stuff. It's an open kitchen so it's one of those places where you can end up smelling like the food after dining there. I like that they serve free range chicken and pork and naturally raised beef. They also use biodegradedable and compostable cups and straws though their take out box was styrofoam (LOL). They serve tacos, quesadillas, tortas, fajitas, burritos, pupusas, tostadas, a couple of desserts and some Jarritos bottled fruit drinks. Most platter meals are about $10, burritos and quesadillas are $10, combo platters are closer to $20 and individual items like pupusas and tostadas are about $3 each. It's a family run restaurant with very warm and hospitable service. I tried the pork taco platter ($9.99) which comes with rice, beans, 3 tacos filled with shredded pork and topped with pico de gallo, side of shredded lettuce and sour cream. I found the soft taco shells to be quite greasy and too thick and chewy for my tastes. But I loved the seasoning in the pork; it was cooked to order so it was juicy and delicious. I asked for some hot sauce and that provided some heat (not a lot) to the tacos which I also stuffed with lettuce and sour cream. The rice also had a glossy sheen to it, not a fan of that but it made up for it in taste. Subtle flavours in the rice and the beans but I enjoyed those sides. The taco plate is a lot of food (for me at least), I barely finished half of my meal. The pork and cheese pupusa ($3.99) is a traditional Salvadoran dish. Basically a small disc of corn tortilla that is filled with pork, cheese and refried beans. The pupusa came with a small vinegar type slaw and a watery hot sauce (that was more tangy than spicy). I really enjoyed the pupusa - great flavours and yummy condiments. All in all, I liked this place, the only miss are the greasy and chewy taco shells. But maybe next time I'll get the burrito bowl, which is just a burrito with no wrap! read more

Tried this place on the weekend and really liked it. The food was excellent and the ambiance inside is great. It's colourful and full of cool murals and all the chairs are carved and painted differently. (Although the walls could use a paint job.) I had a veggie enchilada and my girlfriend had a chicken enchilada and we both liked them. They also have an assortment of hot sauces. We tried the creamy green hot sauce. Next time I'm planning to try the purple stuff. If you're in the mood for Mexican, this is a much better option than the interchangeable Mexican fast food joints out there. When you walk in, JC's looks like a fast food joint and the ordering is done fast food style, but it's actually a table service place. read more

This restaurant is located in an old bank. It is brightly decorated and Mexican music is playing so you really feel the culture. The tables are somewhat close together, making it hard to get around at times. You also have to order at the counter rather than having your order taken at the table. This makes it uncomfortably tight in the entrance as more people enter and are trying to read the menu up on the wall while others are squeezing through the crowd to order. There are numerous options on the menu. I had the 3 beef taco platter priced reasonably at $9.99 +$1 for the beans & rice. However, the ground beef wasn't seasoned at all. I added salsa, which is available on the table, but it still wasn't great. My husband had the barbacoa (shredded beef) option which was a bit tastier but something's missing. The beans and rice were nothing to write home about. We also had the pupusas - they were fantastic for only $2.99! A delicious tortilla filled with cheese, beans and pork and served with salsa and coleslaw. That was delicious! The prices for the combos (fajita steak or chicken) starting at $18.99 was pretty pricey, I thought, for a place like this. But the portion sizes are huge so you won't go away hungry. Overall, I don't think the food was good enough for me to return any time soon. They do have a fair number of items for purchase such as hot sauces, chilis and spices. read more

This place is a hidden gem. Their decor is bright and vibrant right down to their colorful carved wooden chairs. Their food is very authentic. On my first visit I asked the owner for her recommendation and more specifically what her own family loves the most and she gave me the cheesiest enchilada I have ever had. I tried the barbacoa taco platter. The beef was excellent and they had excellent house made hot sauces available. The rice and beans were only OK. The beans were a touch watery. I will definitely be making a return to try the carnitas or maybe an enchilada or some carne asada. read more

This is for their new place on Portage. The one star is for the salsa which is amazing, but only came as a dollop on some shredded lettuce. Hmm..where to start? Well don't expect to start with chips and salsa like you would find in every other Mexican restaurant in the city. Nothing like that here. Oh, and don't expect your server to make it through service either. Ours left after about 30 minutes in. "It was too busy" Okay, granted it was opening night but we were the second table in the restaurant. We watched everyone walk in after us and wait 10 minutes to just be acknowledged by someone...We placed our order, with Pepsi's (as they don't have their license). The Pepsi's came and tasted horrible. I don't think they had run anything through the pipes. They were plastic tasting. We waited for our server or even anyone to make eye contact with us so we could let them know but that didn't happen. When we finally told someone they said that they'd bring us something else. We said just water would be fine. We never received the water.... Our food took forever to arrive. Mine came first, followed by my nephew's plain cheese Quesadilla (which by the way cost $10.00 for two tortilla's with some melted cheese between). My husband's food came with something that was suppose to be refried beans. Still not sure if maybe it was actually bean soup. We tried to wait to eat for my sister's food but couldn't..we were so hungry! Finally, after we were almost done (and no one had come by to see how we were doing) my sister went to the front to ask for it. It showed up about 5 minutes later but wasn't what she ordered. when she complained she was told, 'that's what I punched in and that's what I was given' The BEST PART? The owner was right there when she said it and he walked away!!!!! My chicken enchilada was the only thing that tasted halfway decent. My husband's tacos were horrible...and the food my sister didn't order? She didn't eat it even though the owner told us that it was actually correct. The photo on the menu didn't look anything like what arrived. He said that they had made a mistake on the menu. Still, it tasted horrible. Shall we talk about the saga of trying to pay for our meal? We were really ready to walk out without paying because no one wanted to take our money. When we finally convinced someone to let us pay we had to make him do it over 3 times because they kept charging us incorrectly. Then he was frustrated with us and gave us the bill in a bit of a snit. I won't be going back to this restaurant even to see if it gets better. First impressions and all that. Best authentic Mexican food in the city! So delicious, very generous portions. I really enjoy the natural juices, and especially the horchata. If you're brave, try El Senior, a giant burrito. I am so happy that JC's has landed here in Winnipeg! Wow! This is authentic food. It doesn't stop at just Mexican food either. This is how tacos are supposed to taste folks! The portions are huge and most people are leaving with doggie bags. I will eat here again and again! The staff is so friendly and very knowledgable about the items on the menu...so if there is something that you have never heard of, just ask and they can explain it n a way that makes you taste it! Well, I should have read the other review about the Portage location before trying this place, because pretty much everything they said about the food was right. I am giving it a one star for the salsa, and that's about it. The food did not look at all like the pictures on the menu. Apparently it is supposed to be "home cooked" food, which is a total lie. My sister ordered something that started with an F (name of it slipped my mind, because it was that memorable) and it came looking like tostitos from costco, and the amount of meat in them was so pathetic, she accually held it up and looked through it at me. She did enjoy the beans and salsa on her plate, which was about all she ate. My chicken quesadilla was medicore and mushy and my pepsi tasted like it was the local superstore brand, because it was defanitly not pure pepsi. Then, to top off the wonderful experience, literally just as we finish, a bus boy comes with his bin of dirty dishes and asks if we are done eating. We say yes and he proceeds to take the dishes and then picks up my not yet finished drink with his utility gloved hand (one finger inside the cup) and asks me if I am finished drinking it. Then he wiped down the table with us still sitting there, stunned. I will never be returning there and would steer anyone else in the other direction. read more
