I had a frustrating experience with JCPenney's jewelry department. I purchased earrings online, and when they arrived, some of the items did not even have barcodes attached. I brought the earrings, my online receipt/order confirmation, and the credit card used for purchase to the Hayward location, but they refused the return and insisted I needed the packing slip. They didn't want to help. After calling customer service, I was told the order number should have been sufficient and that the packing slip was not required. I then drove to the Concord location, where the return was processed immediately with no issues and without needing the packing slip at all. Went in for a photo session for my wife. Had to wait a bit but that was not an issue. We had a flexible schedule. Pictures came out good, service in studio was ok. Price is about any price of any photographer as a side gig price. One thing we did not like was the waiting area. No decor, there was dog urine from a dog that was in a session right before us. As I have gotten older, I have started shopping pretty much everywhere, and JCPenney is one of those places I still check out from time to time. I recently stopped by this location looking for jackets. The jacket selection was not the strongest, but they had plenty of other things that caught my eye. A lot of good sales! Their Levi's section is actually really solid. I ended up picking up a long sleeve shirt and a Levi's jacket, along with a few other items from different brands. I went in for one thing and walked out with more than I expected, which is usually a good sign. Overall, a nice stop with a surprising amount of good finds. They had a good selection of slim fit slacks and shirts, which was what I was looking for. Also, plenty of sales that I was unaware of until I got to the register. I had a 10:00 a.m. portrait studio appointment and was instructed to arrive early, however the mall doors do not even open until 10:00 a.m. This meant I was only able to start walking to JCPenney at my scheduled appointment time, and then still had to make my way to the Portrait Studio and check in. By the time I was actually checked in, I was already about 15 minutes into my appointment -- which is the total length of the session. As a result, the entire experience felt extremely rushed. There was no time to get comfortable, adjust poses, or capture quality photos. Unfortunately, the photos did not turn out well at all. Even with a discount, I paid $171 for all digital images, which were frankly very disappointing and not worth the price. BEWARE!!!! They cost me $1,800! I have never written a negative review for any store or restaurant, but I feel strongly about how negative, costly and wrong dealing with their jewelry department was. Over the past months, I ordered 18 gold pieces online and it clearly says that returns are allowed within 60 days, with all labels attached and in original packaging. I liked most of the pieces, however I wanted to return two. One was a 14k solid gold heavy chain that was sold as "unisex", but looked more masculine than online. And another was a smaller 14k gold chain that arrived bent and continued to tangle constantly. Both were light weight for their prices. Several weeks before the 60 day limit, I tried to return the 2 items online. For some reason, their system kept glitching, so I was advised by customer service to take them back to any brick and mortar location. I took the day off work to make sure I was within the deadline, and went to return the 2 items in person in Hayward on day 58.5. For some reason, their computer was also glitching and I was told by both jewelry supervisors, Raynaut (sry for spelling) and Kathy that they would not take back the items. I called customer service while at the store, and they emailed me a barcode for the order and told me to take the email to the counter with the items. No problem! When I did this, Raynaut told me it wasn't their job to mail items back, and that I had to go to UPS to do so. Even though it clearly states that you can return online orders in person. She rudely excused me from the store after I drove from SF to get to the closest location. I spent the entire day trying to trouble shoot. We even called customer service TOGETHER and they said it should be handled in store as I was there with everything necessary. She still refused. Several other shoppers were shocked. She even agreed several times that I was "within the 60 days" and it just "wouldn't work." They don't ship things. What?? She agreed it was wrong, yet no one could help in the entire store So I called customer service for a third time in the parking lot as she advised me to get a shipping label and take the items to UPS. Ok! Customer service was unable to give me a shipping label because they said it was day 58 and the computer was saying it was too close to day 60 to mail! They advised me to go back into the store. I tried yet again, and was told that under no circumstances would they take back an online order. So I am now the owner of one broken chain and one very manly ugly chain that is certainly not worth its price in its light weight. This has cost me $1,800. After spending over $8,000 in jewelry purchases in the last few months, this is unacceptable. I will be contacting the Better Buyers' Bureau. I know Penney's has been having problems as the usual closer location closed recently. However, to steal thousands of dollars from a consistent customer is outlandish and disgusting. I was also treated quite poorly. I'm a classical musician, and my friends and colleagues don't treat people the way I was treated. I've never had such a negative experience. Please save yourself the trouble and the scam. Shop ANYWHERE else. That jewelry counter and its employees should be ashamed of themselves. Karma could come around. Just wow!! read more

Horrible customer service and even worse policies. I happened in one of the few remaining JCPenney's in the Bay Area. You're making your way through the store. When some watches, that happened to be in the clearance section, catcher your eye. You call over someone over, so you can just find out the price of the watch. Not to try it on, not to hold it or anything. Just curious how much the watch is. Making it easier for you to decide if you want to actually take a look at it. The lady tells you. "I need your ID if you want to see the watch". Confused, I told her I just want to know how much it was? But she continues to make a ridiculous point that a "ID" is required to know the price. What kind of world are we living in right now. That it requires an "ID" to know the price of a item. She then proceeded to tell me it's store policy to try on a watch. Which I replied, I just want to know how much? Is this how you run a business JCPenny? Last time I checked, you guys are on the verge of bankruptcy? Is it wise to treat a potential customer? Though it is not a million dollar sale. It was a potential in sale. In a store that had more employees than customers. The fact that another employee comes over because they see the ridiculous situation happening. I tell her exactly what happened. I just want to know the price. Which she obliged without a problem. The original employee proceeded to tell us that it's the JCPenney policy. But I find out it's not a Nation Wide Policy. I don't know if it just happens to be this one of what. I am not too sure why there's so many negative reviews for the photo department! in my experience it was great! I bought a Groupon and ended up buying a package there because there was so many good pictures. Also, please be aware that there is a charge $25 to extend the session. Makes it from 15 mins to 30. I highly advise if you have a baby and want to get more outfits (I had 3). Felicia (I believe) was my photographer and she was awesome! I will be back with her and have recommended her to several people already. She explained everything to me and the packages. Overall I paid a little under $250 (included the Groupon). The Groupon was for 1 printed image and 3 digital. To upgrade it was $204.98 but that included all the pictures that were in the session (electronically) along with 12 printed images of any size. Overall it was a good deal! I had been quoted at various newborn baby pictures (just digitals) $350+ so I saved myself $100ish. read more

Absolutely the worst customer non service ever. 1st of all they only have two places to check out. No other cashier stations for the 10 people waiting in line. Second the cashier will harass you into opening an account and is terribly rude as you stand there and continue to say no. Lastly DO-NOT lose your receipt. Attempting to exchange without a receipt is an absolutely horrendous experience. 1st you go to the second floor and wait only to be told you can't exchange or return without a receipt. You are then instructed to go downstairs to the area where you made the purchase to exchange. After standing in line AGAIN you are told no exchanges without a receipt. I had to literally call the store to have the manager come over. Upon arrival she was visibly upset having to assist with my issue. She entered my phone number into her register and lo and behold there was my receipt. WTH!!!!‍. I now see why brick and mortar stores are going away. I love jcpennys because I'm a bigger guy and they have great choices for big men sizes. But this place always runs out of clothes in that section barely have any choices stocked and this jcpennys needs to fix their air conditioning fast ! There's no central air what's ever I seen that there's big tubes hooked to the air vents and somehow are connected to a machine that blows little air . I mean yes jcpennys is old like sears who are all closed. So I understand that it's outdated but still you'd think with all the lights they have in a store from ceiling to glass display cases they'd have working air because it gets hot in the store! my mom got dizzy and I was sweating. The bathroom is sketch and not private at all like one mentioned. The fitting room changed but is decent. Either than the air the main complaint are the workers. Usually the men's section has a cashier for you to check out which can be Inconvenient because the men's area is near where you exit the store and mall itself. I usually love shopping at JCPenney's. They usually have plus sizes very reasonable prices and very comfortable. Today I have no idea what the problem was. March 8, 2023 I go in I usually come to JC pennies three or four times a month and I spend a pretty good penny. Well, it's a hot mess in there. So I go to the women's department I get my clothing I'm excited. I walk up to the women's register. No one's there. They don't have a little carts or anything to help you shop. However, I take my clothes to the mail department because I noticed a register open. I'm very excited because there's one one person at the register. So I'm like OK she's almost done ringing her up to be another two minutes. No! That's not the case she's trying to get her to apply for a JC pennies credit card. The lady saying I believe I have one. I kid you not after 30+ minutes I decide let me find another register.! Like my arms are tired I literally have lots and lots of clothing. I go to shoes. She says the register is open over there. I said oh it's not open. I just left from over there. Yes yes go over there. I love everyone but the store so happen to be full of Asians today. And the reason I said this because the shoe lady brushed me off instead of ringing me up, or finding someone to come to the register. Then I noticed a lady and her husband at the register in jewelry So I wait till they finish. Again, the lady was trying to make a JCPenney get a credit card deal. After 17 to 18 minutes for one item to be rang up! She's done so she looks at me and walks away you guys. And I'm sorry she was Asian and the lady she ran and got was Asian. As a long time customer of JC Penney store @ Southland, Hayward, I was recently shocked to learn that they now have Co-Ed dressing rooms! I usually buy online from them but needed to go there personally to try outfits on and was very uncomfortable knowing it was Co-Ed. This is not acceptable to merge the men and women together in the same area to try on clothing! Who made this idiotic decision and why?? For those of you with young daughters and those who had no idea this is happening, you have now been informed! I was sold a gold chain and offered an additional 10% discount that was not applied and when I tried to ask for it, I was denied and told that was the price. Then the Store Manager named Yolanda, called my cellular and was very unprofessional and rude will not let me talk and explain she just denied the offer I was promised and told that since I did not understand the issue, she just said by and hanged up on me. I was there today making a purchase. Apparently one of my items was missing a tag. The cashier tells me that the tag is missing, moves it to the side and rings up the other items. Also, their lines are so long! 8 people in a long line with 2 ppl at the registers is crazy. The stores are clean well organized and have a great variety of products. The staff is very friendly and helpful when you can get a hold of them because they're very short staffed mostly cashiers ringing up the line of customers. Areas for improvement: They are trying to start selling on the Internet but have not made any infrastructure improvements to help out customers in receiving their product. When trying to confirm product pick up at the store from the website order. Did not answer the phone in any store department. I tried 8 different departments. When I did show up to the Hayward JCPenney store the product was there people were friendly and the line didn't take more than about 20 minutes. read more

This is an updated review for the Portrait Studio. The staff were really friendly and patient with our babies (NB & 3yo) but we're not too happy with their purchasing options. We used the Groupon which was fine but we wanted to purchase additional digital images since there's more than 3 photos we liked but the guy assisting us said we can only buy additional digital images if we buy the whole digital album for $99, we can't buy them individually. That's disappointing because we didn't want all 16 photos, we just wanted 3 additional to the 3 free with the Groupon. So even though we liked the staff, we probably won't use jcpenny portraits in the future. read more
