I placed an online order and opted to pick it up at the Greendale, WI store. Everything was going well until I noticed an entry on the receipt that was puzzling. There was a shipping/handling charge ($3.95). What's the problem? Well, their website advertised "Free shipping to store". Upon seeing this I asked the sales clerk about it. She is aware of the JC Penney policy to not having s/h charges for items picked at their stores. Thus began a lengthy, time-consuming chain reaction. The sales clerk tried to summon a manager, a process that took several minutes (note that employees are spread thin here). She too is aware of the "No s/h" policy for items picked up at the store. Both said they hadn't encountered this problem before. One thought a relatively simple process would solve this dilemma, but the other said it couldn't be done (in essence, "return" the item on the spot, then buy it again. Not having a solution, another manager was summoned. After conferring with the other 2 employees and me, she concluded that it would be necessary for me to call one of their 800 numbers. These 3 ladies seemed knowledgeable and competent; however, with no policy or solution in place, there was nothing else they could do. Apologies were made. The Penney's chain needs to have clear-cut directions if this happens, not leave their workers with no guidance. As of now, the burden is placed upon me (the customer). I must spend time calling the 800 number. Not sure if someone there can resolve the issue.Stay tuned for further developments! read more

You don't need to read the stores in the media to see that JC Penney is dying, the evidence is quite clear when you visit their stores: Sparsely-filled salesfloors, worn and dated carpeting, poorly-merchandised sections, and signs missing letters abound at this store. I really wanted to find things that I liked so I could support the store, but outside of one item on clearance, there just wasn't much to be had and not really any reason to return anytime soon. On a positive note, the experience returning my online order was efficient and painless. Thank goodness for small favors. read more

My son needed an outfit for a school interview, so we headed to Southridge mall to see what we could find. I noticed there was a JC Penney and given I haven't been to a JC Penney in years, I thought we'd give it a shot. I am so glad we did. We found not one, but two suitable outfits (that both he AND we liked). They had a solid selection of casual pants (dressier than denim, but not necessarily slacks...which is precisely what we were looking for) as well as a nice array of button down shirts and polos. All of the items we purchased were on sale (we were able to get two full outfits for just under $60--amazing!). The interior of the store isn't sleek and it isn't modern. Their displays aren't beautifully designed nor perfectly organized. But, they carry decent brands at incredibly reasonable prices and definitely came through in a pinch for me. Get to it! read more

One star just for the poor employees who are very good at dealing with the customers. Online ordering and customer service get zero. I've never had as much of an issue ordering something on line for same-day in store pickup as I have with JC Penney. I will never be using their services again, and if I had time to sit on hold for 40 minutes I would call back again and let them know to escalate my grievances. I had issues in every aspect of the process. Payment, pick-up, email confirmations, payment re-verification, customer service and loss of order in the system. If anyone shops here, I'm sure it's nice. The physical store is often clean and employees abound. But this whole process has turned me off from the JCP for good. Also, fyi, if there is a line marked for online order pick-up only, please do not go there to do store returns and purchases. It's meant to be a speedy process. Say all the bad things you want about JCPenney, and it will fall on my deaf ears from now on. We found easy parking near Penney's on Black Friday, so this is where my sister and I entered and exited Southridge on that busy day. My sister immediately found some things for our niece in the kid's department. Plenty of associates on hand to assist at check out. I found a Christmas outfit for my son too. The only ding is a coupon in their Black Friday circular ("circular"? Who am I? The old lady on the Simpson's?) couldn't be used until Black Saturday. Why play games with the fine print? But Sale prices were extremely forgiving, and so were we. Where JCPenney (my fourth grade teacher pronounced it French "Jacque Pennay" to be funny) exceeded any other major retailer at Southridge on Black Friday, was their checkout lines. I already mentioned plenty of associates in our AM purchase- and during my PM purchase in a different department is where the magic happened. Waiting in a pretty short line, we were all asked if we were using debit/credit to check out, and apparently no one was but me. I got pulled ahead of the line to a non-descript card table and a girl using her own POP/POS check out gun that allowed her to swipe my card and be Merrily on my way! This, after my sister and I had already stood in line at another retailer *coughKohl's*cough for 30 minutes, with no such miracle. Thanks, Penney's! You're the tops! read more

At any given time you can expect to find about 5 employees working this store. The overall selection is fair. Brookfield has more available. I wouldn't be surprised at ALL if this location is the next store to close down. In my mind if you have an item in an ad then all of the physical locations should have it in store. read more

I am not sure what happened to this place. Back in the day it was the place to go for value and clean. We had a coupon and went there to pick up some last minute gifts. The Junior department looked in disarray. Clothes were thrown all over the place and the new signage makes it look like it's going out of business. Not my first choice to shop that's for sure. read more

I'm sad to see this place go downhill. The displays were messy and unorganized. Merchandise stock was running low. I walked around a very long time looking for some gloves that were advertised online to be in stock. Never found the gloves. No employees around to help. I just grabbed a different pair of gloves and headed to the register. Only one person working and the line was long and slow. After 20 minutes, I had enough. My go-to place when I need a fancy schmancy dress, I came here thinking I would have to find a new dress to wear to the MAM ball, since I hadn't found a sweater (yet). I found 3 in silver and one in white. Two of the silver ones just didn't work for me and I held out on the other two because I hadn't hit EVERY store in the mall yet.....I eventually did find the sweater, so I'm glad that I held out. And, as I thought might happen, I did see someone at the ball wearing one of the dresses I tried on, so I'm glad I stuck with my original choice. Now, back to the store. They moved a few things around since the last time I was here, and, I think, the place looks more spacious. The aisles were nice and roomy and the clothing racks weren't smooshed together. The signage could have been a little better, as it was hard to decipher where the misses and women's departments met and also, where the clearance racks were. Though not a regular shopper here, I've always liked Penney's, so I give it a solid 4 stars. 19/2015 read more

I have always loved JCP and I thought with the closing of the Boston Store they would step up to grab the customers. No, this did not happen. The store has an uncomfortable feeling. Very unclean, junky, departments in disarray, dirty cracked flooring in elevators, walls near elevators need painting, bathrooms that I can only describe as disgusting. The Junior department is unbelievable. Dark, dingy, ugly clothes all over the floor, mixed up sizes on racks. Some racks so thick with clothes, it is impossible to find anything. The selection is at best...bad. Nothing there new, exciting, trendy, etc. Prices around the store are a bit high. Who sells kitchen towels for $10? I would have thought they would have jumped at the chance to clean up this store when Boston Store left. I see opportunity that no one takes. I don't know who the manager of this store is, or the CEO, but should these people have their jobs? Their indifference to their store and the customer's needs guarantee that this store with close someday soon. You removed all the various department employees that help the customer, yet you are paying big money to someone who is taking the store down. What exactly is the long range plan for this store? The Nike sales are nice at 25% off; however, a small rack with all very large sizes. Where is the merchandise? Again, stock is old or outdated sports wear. I found about 15 t-shirts XXls on a rack. That's it? The shoe department looks like someone opened all the boxes and threw the shoes on the floor, You can't find the right sizes, there is no one to ask...only open boxes with one shoe. The ladies dressing rooms are dirty and ugly. Doors don't close, big holes in the walls and doors, hooks missing. Doors don't close or lock, and walls in serious need of paint. Maybe some new carpet? All in all an unclean, cluttered, poorly managed store. It is not a pleasure shopping here. You can't wait to get out of this store. To me it shows a lack of respect for the customer. I am afraid that JCP will end up like the Boston Store. The people at the top, making all the money, are clueless. Get rid of them, and use the money to modernize this store and please clean those bathrooms and dressing rooms. Offer better merchandise especially for the junior department. If you want me to shop there and spend my money, then JCP needs to make their store inviting in every way. I am not a real big fan of Kohl's, but their store is clean, neat and orderly. Bathrooms are clean and attractive. Also, a good selection of clothes for teens. Perhaps you could consult with them on how to maintain a store. By all means, find some new upper management employees who have what it takes to be imaginative and competitive. Get rid of the highly paid "do nothings" that have been running these stores for too long. read more

I was just stopping into this location for a gift card for a relative, but the service I received for my tiny purchase was awesome. The first woman that helped me steered me towards a register that not only had gift cards, but also had someone working at it. Next, another woman stopped what she was doing to ring me up, then disappeared to make sure I had a gift box for my purchase because the register we were at was all out. Very nice! read more

How interesting, I too came here on Black Friday, and I too was impressed. No violent crowds, helpful but not pushy sales workers on the floor, and I got a cute free snowglobe. The place is clean, well lit, Macy's quality clothes at Sears prices. I had a little trouble finding someone to help me in men's ware, but a woman working in shoes was more than helpful, didn't just ring me up, helped me order something they didn't have in my size, but at the heavily discounted Black Friday sale price, for later pick up. Had I written this review the next day, this store would have gotten four or five stars. When I returned a week later to pick up, the store staffing was notably weaker. It took me a long time to find a person to ask where order pick up was, I had in fact walked by it a couple of times, it's not that clearly marked. There was only one young lady working, she exuded exhaustion and weariness. It couldn't have been any clearer that she absolutely hated working there. First I had to wait for her to assist a woman making some sort of return. This was taking a long time because the customer was a blithering idiot. The world-weary worker made it pretty obvious by her tone of voice and body language that she was really tired of suffering such fools, and she would maintain this same attitude with me, when she finally got to me. After an interminable time with the only customer ahead of me, she still couldn't give me full attention because she had to keep answering the phone, and arrange for other stuff to get taken to the dock for the curbside pick up. While this was going on her hand held radio squawked with a couple of other workers declaring that they were going on break, and down the way, two other workers were discussing something loudly over a great distance, it was all so annoying, inefficient, I decided I probably wouldn't be back until another free snow globe was involved. And even then, I'm not so sure. read more

I know profit margins are down but not having anyone knowledgeable in men's suits is a great deterrent for purchasing. We're here to buy 2 suits, shirts, ties, etc. Couldn't hardly get the employee in the department to even point me in the right direction. Went to JCPenney yesterday to find some dress clothes for my family of four. It used to be a GREAT place to go because of the nice selections of clothing and special occasion dresses. What happened?! I was VERY disappointed in the lack of dresses in Women's and Girls, there was hardly anything in Boys, and I didn't even try looking in he Mens section. I had two white dresses picked out and discovered dirt on both of them while in the checkout line. Even those "selections" weren't ideal but the best from what little stock they had available. Overall, the store just feels dirty and it's not as easy to find what I'm looking for. The change that JCPenney instituted as a company has not been a good one. I miss the old JCPenney, and certainly won't waste my time shopping in the store anymore. read more
