Water heater doctor came in and replaced it with an identical water heater. Part of why we chose them was that they preferred that brand (Bradford White). Installed competently with lots of double checking and explanations of everything. They resisted *my* suggestions for upselling, explaining why that was not needed. After hearing the issue she said it's probably a capacitor that costs about 32 bucks at Ace Hardware but if we come put it on there'd be a $450 charge. So I Googled and You Tubed...how do you fix a capacitor on a Trane A/C? After watching a couple...I went to Ace and bought a new capacitor...yanked the old one off and put the new one on...with a little bit of Jerry-rigging as it was skinnier than the old one and didn't fit the bracket...and voila!
