I stayed at the JB Duke Hotel for a conference, and it was a great experience overall. The location is very convenient if you need to be on campus or near the Fuqua School of Business. The staff was super friendly, helpful, and always available when needed. The rooms were clean and felt recently renovated, with nice walk-in showers, good bathroom lighting, thick curtains, and a fridge in the room. I also liked the water refill station near the ice machine, where you can get hot, cold, and sparkling water. The gym is basic but solid, with free weights up to 50 lbs, a few upper body machines, leg machines, cardio equipment, and space to stretch. The lobby bar is also lively in the evenings and seems to attract a good crowd. Overall, a very comfortable and convenient stay. read more

JB Duke Hotel is a super sleek hotel on the Duke campus, making it walking distance for the on-campus coffee shop, Chapel and bookstore if you want to explore campus. The rooms were nicely sized and amenities were overall, fine. My biggest complaint is that we weren't able to get our trash emptied, even after calling the front desk twice. While I was only there for three days, two of them smelled like my leftover BBQ. I'd definitely stay again, the location on campus really can't be beat. read more

I recently stayed at the JB Duke Hotel for a single night and came away with mixed impressions. Check-in was fast and friendly, and if you park in the on-premises garage, they will provide you with a pass that offers in-out privileges. One thing to remember is that if you're approaching the hotel on Science Drive from the south (i.e., Cameron Blvd), it comes up very fast on your left. I had to do a U-turn down the street and only when approaching from the other direction could I even spot it. The room itself was great, with a very comfortable bed and all of the amenties that you would expect from a hotel in this price range. Overall, the hotel is beautiful but in a kind of sterile way. My main disappointment with the JB Duke hotel was that upon checking in, I had hoped to order some dinner. However, after looking all over, I could not find a room service menu anywhere in the room. I ended up having to walk about ten minutes down the street to Brodhead Center student dining facility to get carryout. The hotel was able to provide me with a microwave to reheat the food, for which I paid a $15.00 charge. Overall, quite a sumptuous hotel with rates to match, but why no room service? read more

Stayed here for the Duke vs NC State game. This is a really nice hotel located right on campus and a cheap Uber/Lyft ride from campus to bars/restaurants. The rooms are a decent size and really clean, the only issue with my room was the safe didn't work. Room service/restaurant was a bit pricey and didn't really offer anything I wanted anyways so I would make to 15 minute walk to the restaurants on campus that were cheaper and more my style. The bar was great and depending on who made your drink strong at times. Staff was friendly and very helpful. My only complaint is your not allowed to eat outside food in the lobby and they didn't sell red bull at the bar or the little store there (sometimes you just gotta have wings). Conveniently located on the Duke University campus, the grounds are impeccable with great access. There is one primary restaurant in the hotel which offers a large variety of options for breakfast and a bar on the 3rd floor (primary floor of the hotel) that seems large in relation to the properties size. Housekeeping was sub-par at best. I think they cleaned my bathroom with (someone else's) dirty towels because I found a ton of long hairs in my sink and floor.....my head is practically shaved. It was very gross. I put the "do-not-disturb" on my door and didn't allow them to access my room for the remaining 4 days. read more

The rooms were nice and the inside is very modern. You drive up though and it looks veryyyyyy interesting. More like an abandoned office building versus a hotel. Not a great view either. The front staff was a little rude too when we called to ask if there was a late checkout option "WE NEVER GIVE LATE CHECKOUTS!!!" Okay fine. ;) It's just a few miles to downtown Durham though so a cheap rate and cheap uber. Would stay there again. read more

I stayed here with my mom for a girls getaway night. The hotel is on the edge of Duke's campus so there wasn't any ruckus from college kids thankfully. It's a quick drive to downtown Durham. The rooms are large and well laid out. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. We did the Summer Staycation package which came with dinner and breakfast. The dinner was excellent and made up for what the rest of the visit lacked. We ordered cocktails, crab bisque, and pasta with summer vegetables. The food was delicious and our server Dyonous was funny, kind, and professional. I would have preferred that dinner was served in a dining room rather than in the lobby lounge surrounded by screaming children and guys yelling at sports though. Unfortunately we did not use the breakfast vouchers. 10:30am is very early to end breakfast on a weekend. The parking garage did have a chargepoint station but for some strange reason one of the two electric parking spots was also a handicapped spot. Electric handicapped vans may exist but are probably much less common than standard electric cars. The next spot over was permit parking only and while the hotel staff said I could use it and stretch the charging cable, I did not feel comfortable since the parking enforcement office was steps away. I called the front desk to ask for more washcloths yet none were delivered. I had to go in person to get more. The sheets on both beds had holes - one large enough for me to put my hand through. One of the pillowcases had black spots on it. Thankfully the beds have mattress protectors to prevent bedbugs so at least that wasn't the cause. I would expect nicer sheets from such a pricey hotel. Our room had two queen beds yet only one robe. Overall we had a nice night but I was underwhelmed by the hotel. The dinner made the price worth it but I would not have been happy had I paid the standard room rate. I will however be back for food and to see Dyonous! read more

My sister stayed overnight recently, so we met in the bar area for a drink before and after a Duke basketball game. We had good service, considering the bid crowd, and the drinks were fine. It was an energetic atmosphere, with lots of seating and several televisions around. I never saw a room, but my sister enjoyed her stay. read more

JD Duke Hotel is right in the heart of the business area (Fuqua school of business). It's super convenient for access to many of Duke's buildings, Chapel (about a three block walk) and bookstore. The hotel itself is very pleasant. Staff is friendly and helpful. Housekeeping takes care of the rooms well and in general the rooms are very comfortable with good amenities (coffee maker, plenty of power outlets, good toiletries). It would be nice if there were a real refrigerator in the room instead of a pseudo-fridge/mini bar. There's room to hold a few extra cans of soda/water but not much more. Also staffing seems to be a bit variable. There tends to be a bit of a wait at the front desk, bar or restaurant. It's not a huge deal, just be prepared to wait a bit more. The staff itself is extremely friendly, so I have no issue with that. There's parking next door (the front desk will give you a car for entry/exit). It's OK, but slightly off on execution. Sometimes the card doesn't work and getting someone to answer the call button on the weekends is a challenge. It would be nice if it were directly tied to the room's keycard instead and use NFC instead of IR/QR codes. The food at the restaurant and bar are excellent and worth staying in the hotel. I love the JB hotel! It has warm fires, kind people, and is right on Duke campus. It has an understated elegance and also a business sense about it. It really is all things! Tonight, I showed up and they had overbooked. For some reason, their system had accepted more reservations than they had in the hotel. They responded beautifully. They said they would put me over at the Washington Duke for one night, and then I could come back to the JB hotel. I kindly requested to stay at the Washington Duke for three nights straight, because I did not want to transfer back and forth, since I was speaking three times over the next few days at Duke. They kindly accommodated this request and kept the rate of the JB hotel while hosting me at the Washington Duke. I feel so grateful. Then, they paid for the first night at the Washington Duke! As a non-profit leader, this means a lot. That means now we pay two nights' hotel rather than three. I am very grateful. I highly recommend the JB hotel as a great hotel and one that has excellence in client service. Thank you to everyone at the JB hotel for doing the right thing. This place is posh. Very posh. Very polished and clean and modern. The exterior reminds me of some fancy campus administrative building, but when you walk inside, it's a different world. Our room was fantastic, very fancy and comfortable with gorgeous furniture and finishings. The rest of the hotel was just as nice. We ate two meals here for our wedding weekend visit, and I'm pleased to say that the food and service were excellent. read more

From the moment we arrived they made us feel like the most important people they'd see that day. Every staff member we encountered the whole weekend made us feel right at home. The room was spotless and came with plush bathrobes a mini bar and cozy seating. Finally a hotel with quality pillows!! This was a staycation for our 15 year anniversary. We had more plans in downtown Durham, which is just around the corner, but the hotel was so lovely we decided to relax there instead. The restaurant/bar/lounge area was such a relaxing place to have a cocktail and do some people watching. We enjoyed a great burger and some shrimp and grits. In the morning we enjoyed breakfast with an omelette and waffle station. The service was great and they have amazing local NC products including honey and jams. Shouldn't every hotel have this! I think it's safe to say we'd definitely stay here again. Maybe I'll start to plan our 20 year now! read more

Stayed here for my cousin's wedding and we loved it. It was probably 80 of us here at this hotel and we had no complaints. Hotel is new, clean and the staff are friendly. They were very accommodating. There is a shuttle that took us to most surrounding places. I didn't eat breakfast here so can't comment on that though I heard it could be better. I wish they had a pool, but that's about it. I would definitely come back and would recommend this place to others. read more

I've only been here once and it was during Duke football game day. This hotel has the look of a chic NYC hotel if not better. Very modern, clean, and close to the football and basketball stadiums. Lots of meeting rooms on the first floor to accommodate organizational meetings. The Marketplace has a surprisingly wonderful selection of food including vegetarian pasta options. Lost if flavorful meats such as Andouille, Bratwurst, Cajun chicken, just to name a few. There's a bar on the first and season floor but serving your standard drinks and a mix of local NC favorites. First off, I'm a HUGE SPG snob so am always leery when I must stay at a non-SPG property. That said... I had the pleasure of staying at the JB Duke for three nights as my company was having a meeting in one of their lovely Board Rooms. We arrived during the opening night party and was immediately taken by how beautiful the property is: from the stunning lobby, to the onsite restaurant to the lovely outdoor spaces. This of it as a really high end Westin with extreme attention to detail - just ask someone on the team there about the carpets! I believe I was the first person to stay in my room and it was efficiently laid out with plenty of space to work, a well-appointed bathroom and even enough floor space to do yoga at night! Don't even get me started on the beautiful robes!!! The hotel overall is very well laid out with obvious attention paid to amenities for the collegiate population but also for non-Duke guests. The gym is one of the nicest I've seen in a hotel with plenty of brand new equipment and even a sauna. The Board Room we were assigned for our meetings was terrific and all of our IT needs were met in advance, while the catering was over the top and filled with variety each day. While the hotel is still going through opening "growing pains", the GM and his well-trained team were always willing to go the extra mile to ensure our needs were met: from providing free bottled water when the gift shoppe wasn't open to sending up extra hangers when requested and within just a few minutes. The team is obviously very proud to work there and it shows in their overall attitude and willing to go that extra mile. In closing, I am actually returning to this hotel in a couple of weeks and am really excited for the opportunity to stay here once again! It's hands down the best hotel to stay at in the Durham area. read more

I have stayed here numerous times and I always leave with a smile on my face and anticipation over my next visit! Duke has a number of on or nearby hotel options but I find the JB Duke to be both a good value and in a super location. It is steps from the Fuqua School of Business, Duke Law, and the Sanford School of Public Policy. It is also near Cameron Indoor Stadium and Wallace Wade Football Stadium. It is easy to get in and out of if you are going anywhere in the triangle. The lobby is huge with lots of seating and a bar. You can also get food there on a limited menu. Not as fancy as the Washington Duke Hotel across the street but I like it's minimalist approach. Nothing super fancy but by no means lacking frills. Mini bars in all the rooms with modern conveniences. Rooms are reasonably sized and comfortable. Good mix of people on a given night from undergrads to business locals to a visiting coach or two. read more

Just finished a 3 night stay at this newly opened property at the edge of Duke campus. Cons: no newsstand, no coffee spot, no bill summary before checkout, no turndown service, hallway cluttered with dirty towel hamper, poor service at breakfast, long walk to self park, hotel car idling for 12 hours a day unused (not very green!). Interrupt feels like a convention center - charmless and antiseptic. Pros: quiet room, easy walking distance to Cameron for basketball games. Omelette station guy (Anthony) is a pro. read more

At first glance, the hotel is very nice. Neat, good furnishings, although somewhat sterile and not very homey, but it is very new. I think that it just opened in January, and it seems that they have not sorted out some of the details of how to run a hotel yet. The front desk was always a very big help; the man at the desk recommended a very nice walk once we arrived after our road trip, and the Duke campus is stunning. The restaurant is not super upscale, but it has great service (Yavian, I believe, was a great server), and the food is pretty good. Housekeeping was the main issue here. We got up to our room very tired after a long day and inspected the room (as we had gone directly on a walk and had not really looked around the room much when we first arrived). Immediately we noticed what suspiciously looked like a bloodstain on the floor of the bathroom, which had obviously not been cleaned (the floor was uncleaned and the countertops were too). The cabinets were also obviously not taken care of, and the carpet was not vacuumed. So, we immediately called to switch rooms and were led to the next room over, which also proved to be similarly unkempt. It seems that whoever was in charge of cleaning floor six was slacking off yesterday! Extremely disappointed. Had three rooms in total and it took us about an hour to finally reach a passable room- they obviously went and cleaned out a room for our second change-over. Quite unsettling as the one criteria that you expect in any hotel room is cleanliness. Will not be staying here again. However, they did handle the situation very well and comped our room and breakfast. The staff were very gracious, and I know that they did not cause the situation and they did deal with the fallout well. Only reason for 2 stars. read more

Stayed for graduation, paid the mandatory 3 days at ridiculously high prices, paid for several rooms a year in advance, but don't ask for any favors!! No late checkouts even an extra hour! Shuttle not reliable and can't accommodate large crowds. Stayed in many hotels over the years and can tell you only one Hotel that would not accommodate a late checkout (extra hour since 90 years grand parents are with us) THE JB DUKE!! Will never stay here again. Although, they are related to Washington Duke Inn , their service is NO where near the same!! read more

Clean, neat and totally upscale. Friendly, easy to get around and very modern. Open areas were a pleasure and the dining area was way cool. My son was put here for an interview process and it was really, really nice. Work out room is pretty top notch, not the biggest but well equipped with more than the normal. The dining area was stellar. The options were spot on and if we had the time we would have eaten there but we wanted to explore the city some and eat out. The courtyard off his room was so quiet, "waterfall" and nicely set up. The room was very nice, not too small. King bed, very comfy. He loved the "cube" by the bed. Very convenient for everything he needed. Had robe in the closet for his use. On the whole, very customer oriented and very, very nice. But it is not on the cheap side of life. This is an upscale hotel and it looks it. But, they had a universal laundry room! THAT was killer for people that travel. Very nice indeed. Had the soap and bounce sheets. I've never been to a hotel before that has still been in the process of opening, but I can tell you with certainty that no hotel has ever, nor will ever, do it with the class that JB Duke has. Even with things like room service still being practiced by the employees, you feel like the most important guest that they've ever had. The (FREE!!!!!!) valet service and bell hop service is nothing but classy. The employees at the front desk are accommodating beyond compare. The bartenders and waiters are willing to do anything they can to make your experience special. The housekeepers make your room immaculate every day. There was not one request I made during my entire stay that the hotel employees did not fulfill--even if it was something they weren't sure of (because they're still in the process of opening). The construction outside is over (mentioned in another Yelper's review) and there is nothing to keep you up at night (since it's in a business park-like area). I stayed in a standard room with 2 queen beds (the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in). I have never in my life been so impressed by a hotel. JB Duke is worth every penny and I would recommend it to anyone. And you can be sure that I'll be going back!!!!!! read more
