Stayed here for my 4th wedding anniversary and absolutely loved it! We stayed in the Pyne Suite which had a little sitting room with a fireplace and a separate bedroom and bathroom that was plenty spacious! A beautiful garden and sitting area lies in the back of the house and its beautifully upkept with a gorgeous working firepit, and it honestly provided alot of privacy! Now....on to the best part....the Breakfast part of Bed & Breakfast! They switch each day between a savory and sweet meal, that is first accompanied with fresh fruit and pastry! The first morning we had a lovely egg and cheese quiche accompanied with little chicken sausages and a fresh cup of coffee/orange juice! The second morning, we had a French toast bake with a different type of sausage, and the third morning we had a scramble egg with asparagus and those little chicken sausages again....which was all delightful! The most romantic location we've ever been to. So quiet you forget you're only 15 minutes from downtown and all your favorite places and restaurants. The outdoors area was beautiful and perfect to take a nice stroll. The rooms are HUGE and they offer the softest robes to hang around in. The morning breakfast was perfectly balanced and gorgeous. Water and coffee/tea is available either in your room or at the dining area. I wish I had more pictures but you'll be so submersed in the experience you'll even forget you brought a phone! Had a very nice stay here last March. We stayed in the downstairs room to the right when you first walk in. The in-room tub was amazing, the room was spacious, the bed was comfortable. It was pouring rain so we didn't explore much but the grounds were beautiful. The breakfasts weren't super memorable but I vaguely remember liking them. It's in a quiet location and is a few minutes drive so you would benefit from having your own car. Now that we live in Durham we want to come back here for a staycation. Definitely worth a stay! read more

Really enjoyed my stay, but for it to be a bed and breakfast, there's a really short window for breakfast. If you have to leave early--like, before 8am, you just might miss it. So, if you want to experience the breakfast (which is really a treat) you should make a real effort to be there during that particular time. I didn't find this part convenient. The rooms are great! The Benson room had a loud jet tub and the water didn't quite get very hot. But the charm is unmatched. read more

We stayed here recently for a romantic couples getaway. We liked how close it was to Eno and it sounded tucked away and peaceful. We've stayed at a few B&B's so this was not our first but was probably the most hotel-like place we've stayed. The room was very spacious, the gas fireplace was lovely and we liked the oversized bath. We went to lay in bed and found the sheets were 100% polyester microfiber (not "luxury Egyptian cotton" as advertised). We are hot sleepers, and I loathe the feel of microfiber so I texted/called to see about getting cotton sheets. They left cotton sheets outside the room so I unmade/remade the bed. My other big issue was with the yuck factor of the duvet. There was an old yellowed duvet with just a flat sheet laid over top of it versus a duvet cover that goes around both sides and is secured at the bottom. I can't imagine it is washed after every guest, and it looked old. I'm not a super germaphobe about bedding but there was no way to keep the old duvet covered with the sheet not attached. I tried to find alternative blankets in the room but they were folded in a drawer and didn't look or smell freshly washed either. I have never asked for new sheets or blankets at a hotel/b&b or airbnb before, I thought my fiancé would think I had lost it but he agreed. The Inn sits right next to a busy street and our room unfortunately faced it. We both woke up several times to traffic noises/horns/motorcycles/etc. I didn't realize we'd be so close to the road. We aren't particularly light sleepers so I'm not sure how traffic noises haven't been mentioned in previous reviews. It was fine, it was clean outside of the bedding issues, they were taking COVID precautions seriously, but I would not book again. For the price, it was not worth it. During a recent visit to Durham, NC we had the pleasure of staying at the Arrowhead Inn. The Arrowhead Inn sits outside of the hustle and bustle of downtown Durham, which gives you that in the quiet, country vide. However, country certainly does not describe the actual Inn. The Inn is very grand and elegant from the outside to the inside. Each room is meticulously decorated to allow you to step back in time to the days of Southern grandeur, but with all of the modern amenities that we all need, such as free wifi. Each room had a private bathroom, tv, and mini frig. The room we stayed in had a really nice walk in closet, which was a great place to store all of our equipment. The Arrowhead provides breakfast each morning. You can enjoy your breakfast in the dining area or on the lovely back patio. The back patio is also a very nice place to relax with a glass of wine or cup of tea at the end of a busy day. Amazing and cozy inn. It was beautiful and relaxing. Our room was on the first floor, spacious with a soaking tub and a sliding door out to the garden. The garden amazing with a bench swing where my husband and I spent time swinging and talking - something we don't always have time for. We played around of Horseshoes - not sure if we played it right, but had fun. Breakfast was excellent. While on a little weekend road trip with my mother, I was lucky to google upon this Band B and we decided to stay. We had a suite upstairs, with a nice living room with a fireplace, couch, writing desk and radio. The high ceilings and 4 poster bed made it feel even more spacious. Everything was VERY clean. There were antiques, but all were in good shape. The breakfast in the morning was quite good and they can accommodate special issues such as gluten-free or other allergies. The downside was that this B and B is ON THE HIGHWAY. Loud truck/car noises were made all night long. Bummer. Bring your ear-plugs. read more

We had a lovely stay at this bed and breakfast. It was a perfect halfway point between Northern Virginia and Myrtle Beach. I was impressed with the instant engagement of the innkeepers even though I had booked our stay only 2 days before our arrival. I was excited to have the option of dinner at the Inn and we're very glad we did. The entrees were very well composed and delicious. We stayed in the Montclair Room. It had wonderful historical accents and antiques. I felt transported in time. Breakfast was so tasty! I loved the option of having a gourmet made to order meal from 8-9am or sleeping in and still being able to get continental breakfast until 10:30am. I can't say enough about how perfect our staycation here was. The owners Phil & Gloria went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect, romantic, relaxing, and seamless. They allowed us to arrive early and had setup our couples massage to be had 30 minutes after our arrival. The romantic cottage was more than we anticipated. The fireplace next to the tub was surrounded with candles and the steam shower was a nice added touch. Phil is an amazing chef and made sure that our food restrictions were considered for all of our meals. The service and food were fabulous and the fire pit out back was a perfect place to cuddle up and finish our bottle of wine from dinner. My girlfriend and I stayed here for Valentines Day...what a wonderful experience! The staff were friendly, welcoming, and very helpful. Our room was gorgeous; old antiques, a gas fire place, and a huge in room jacuzzi. The grounds were beautiful...wonderful gardens, art work, and well maintained paths through out the place. Breakfast was amazing...everything I tasted was excellent. They were also kind enough to serve us early, as both of us had to leave for work after. The Innkeepers are just wonderful! They have done a beautiful job renovating this over a century old home and garden. There are other small historic homes for privacy. Beautiful suite with fireplace, great comfy bed, jet large tub and separate shower, stained glass, mini fridge, access to ice, coffee, and tea at no charge. Delicious breakfast! Large list of wines and beer available at a VERY reasonable price, Opt for breakfast or even arrange for dinner with seating options at several separate tables for dining privately. My husband surprised me with a one-night getaway (stayaway?) in the Garden Cottage for our anniversary. We live in downtown Durham, so it was just a quick drive north before we arrived at the lovely landscaped property (flowers! figs!). ACCOMMODATION Private, as it's detached from the house, and charming. Has a fireplace and big, fluffy robes, a large whirlpool tub to fit two, and a shower with steam setting and dual heads. The sheets were so soft and cozy, I totally scoped the label and promptly ordered myself a set when we got home (psst, Charisma 400 thread count). Since we weren't staying in the main house, we didn't see much of it, although we did enjoy some time in the dining room which doubles as a common area during the day. Light snacks were set out mid-afternoon (scones, mixed nuts) and we grazed while battling it out with Bananagrams. FOOD The absolute highlight was the Inn dinner we booked for the evening of our stay. This was a four-course locally sourced meal whipped up by owner - and talented chef - Phil. We were seated in a cozy corner with candlelight and a personally printed menu congratulating us on our anniversary. Ours started with fried green tomatoes, then a salad. For my main, I enjoyed crab cakes, asparagus, and creamy risotto. Finished off with a rustic apple galette (but had a hard time choosing among two other decadent-sounding desserts!). Oh, and the focaccia - I couldn't get enough! The pace of the meal was perfect, and the owners have a solid wine list to accompany the food. Breakfast the next morning didn't disappoint either. The restaurant at Arrowhead Inn is undoubtedly a true "hidden gem" in Durham's burgeoning food scene. HOSTS This pair is a delight to talk to! Gloria and Phil are both accommodating and approachable. We really enjoyed swapping stories about our favorite "foodie" spots in Durham, Italy's treasures, and hearing about their adventures as B&B owners. LOCATION For out-of-towners, this may not be an obvious choice because it's not in the heart of downtown or in a "walkable" urban area. But others may favor it for that same reason: tucked a little away from the city, but still a very quick drive into town and all its attractions. EXTRAS The only part of our stay that wasn't perfect was the in-room massage. We'd arranged to have this take place shortly after our arrival. While the two masseuses were very nice and friendly, we weren't able to fully relax during our massage for a number of reasons... after moving furniture around in our room in order to set up their tables, one masseuse was overheated and out of breath (so, he was sweaty and breathing heavily). About halfway into the massage he asked if he could turn the AC on; I obliged I felt so badly for him. But it did leave me a little chilly! Meanwhile, my husband's masseuse forgot to bring the head cradle for her table, so when he was facedown, he had to twist his head to the side. They packed up and left, but forgot to move the furniture back in place, so after our massage hubby and I carried the little table and settee back where they belong (which was not a big deal for us to manage; but just felt notably not up to par with the excellence the Inn exudes everywhere else). We've already recommended Arrowhead as a staycation to several of our local friends, and hope we'll be returning visitors soon! read more

If you are contemplating staying at other inns in the area, you should probably choose this one. FWIW, it's about ten or fifteen minutes from downtown Durham, but the drive is easy, and for someone coming from the DC metro area, there is no traffic. As to the reviewer who had mentioned it's on "the highway," it is not. It's off of a busy road (N. Roxboro), but that's hardly the highway. It's a two lane road in semi-rural North Carolina. There are also lovely magnolias and gardens between the road and the actual inn, so the views are gorgeous. Behind it are stately homes on acres of property. Phil and Gloria are really lovely. They have checked on us during breakfast and chatted nicely, but are not overbearing. Phil is really gregarious and funny, and he is a phenomenal chef. He also knows and hangs out with every chef in Durham, so he's given us a ton of recommendations. His breakfast is truth. Best biscuit in the land. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. Phil is also a master carpenter, and you can tell that just by walking through the rooms. Every detail of the former plantation is well kept, beautifully repaired, and lovingly tended to. It looks authentic -- but fear not, there's fast wireless, flatscreen TVs, and a fantastic DVD collection. (Apparently Gloria and Phil are also cinephiles.) Also, it's perfectly clean. Sheets are clean and smell fresh. Bed is soft and comfy. Bathroom is perfectly clean. Not a spot of dirt or dust anywhere to be found. Gordon Ramsey should feature the Arrowhead Inn on Hotel Hell as an example of a place that is really doing it RIGHT. Just saying. read more

We visited Arrowhead Inn for our wedding anniversary as a short little weekend getaway. We stayed in the Garden Cottage (which is not attached to the house but close by). The room was exceptional with very nice modern amenities such as a whirlpool hot tub and steam shower with dual shower heads (nice touch!). The highlight of our stay was definitely the dinner which was prepared by the innkeeper and chef Phil. Since the meal can be tailored to fit any diet restrictions we were asked ahead of time to select among several options for our main entree. I selected the Rack of Lamb ("lambsicles") and my wife selected the crab cakes. They provided some amazing bread before they started serving the courses. The focaccia bread was awesome -- perfectly seasoned with sea salt and rosemary. Our meal included multiple courses and all of them were perfect. I remember the risotto side dish being especially good. My meal ended with a Crem Brulee which is one of my favorites. We visited the inn in late fall and the gardens were still very nice. They obviously put a lot of attention into the house and landscaping. The place is very polished and the attention to detail is very evident. There's no clutter or negative signs of aging. It is an old house but it looks very clean inside but maintains the old character of the property. The innkeepers are very friendly and well-suited to managing an inn. Both of the innkeepers contribute a great deal of their time to guests -- preparing meals, helping with cleanup, waiting tables, etc. We talked to Phil (chef/innkeeper) after our meal to give him our praise and we learned a little more about his connection to cooking. He is very connected to the restaurant owner community and we talked about some of our favorite restaurants in the area. Even if you live close by, Arrowhead Inn is a great little getaway. It's a short drive from downtown Durham but isolated just enough to feel like you're some place new. We look forward to telling more of our friends about this place! read more

My wife and I stayed for our 9th anniversary there just last night and it was an amazing place to stay. - The Decorations: It's a quaint and gorgeous house built in 1775 and it feels like you're stepping into history. There are old paintings, antiques and some of the most warm and comfortable common areas I've ever seen. It's rustic (but has fast wi-fi) it's cozy, but surprisingly well designed for space. The bedspreads are a bit old fashioned for my personal taste, however it completely matches the theme and it adds to the feeling of stepping back in colonial times. - The Room A lovely sitting room with a gas fireplace and some lovely furniture, the bed was soft, but not too soft, the bathroom felt old fashioned, but upgraded in such a way to provide modern comforts while preserving the feel of the room. - The Food We arrived and our hosts gave us home-made cookies, fresh tea and wonderfully tasty fruit. While we didn't have the dinner (which, on the menu looked amazing) we had a rich and savory breakfast. We started out with an amazingly fresh fruit cup and home-made granola... the coffee was dark, rich and wonderful. They had a good assortment of juices. For the main course, we had a spanish breakfast burrito with an egg-over easy on the top and a vegetable, salsa breakfast salad. The chef was amazing. Everything about the design, plating, flavor, level and type of spices made this a memorable breakfast. The herbs came from their garden and the aroma is still with me. I want to go back again. The caretakers were warm and personable, without being over-bearing. I felt like I was a guest and I felt that they truly cared about our stay. While it is near a larger road, the 6 acres are designed to separate you from that as much as possible. My wife and I had a good night's sleep without extra road noise. Also, take your time to explore the grounds, there are some wonderful and clever sculptures and places to read. I tried to think of a critique, but I honestly cannot. Thank you! From the moment I stepped foot inside the beautiful, historic bed and breakfast, the owners were warm and welcoming. Gloria and Phil run a fine establishment. Phil is witty and kind and an incredible chef, and Gloria is personable and helpful and very knowledgeable about the history of the property and the area. We stayed in the Montclair Suite. Jacuzzi tub and a fireplace in my room, at such an affordable price! I will definitely stay here again. The owners are beyond hospitable, and even stayed awake for my 2am arrival from the airport. Amazing attn to details- family friendly, beautiful butterfly gardens and lots of little places to explore, surrounded by nature-we stayed in a log cabin which was meticulously cleaned very cozy and comfy and adorably decorated -everyone on our family of five was able to find a comfy spot... One boy was on the couch and then we had a porta crib that the proprietor had set up for us before we arrived. Everyone was kind and customer service was very good. Especially enjoyed having a nice glass of wine in the dining area when we arrived while our children play with the toys that were put out with them. We will definitely return to this place and were very pleased about a bed-and-breakfast that is child friendly with excellence in terms of hospitality and accommodations read more

My husband and I spent one night here and stayed in the Lipscomb room. The inn itself has be beautifully redone and the grounds of this inn are breathtaking. The room was spotless and had all the amenities of a luxury inn. The afternoon refreshments were a nice touch though by the time we came down to enjoy them there wasn't much left. We choose to dine at the inn as did the 6 or 7 others couples that were staying that night. The service was to the nines and you are required to provide a 20% gratuity which the young women serving deserved every penny. Food was a bit hit or miss and I thought $60 per person was pricey for what you got. It was relaxing to stay on the grounds but if we stayed here again, I will choose to eat dinner downtown. *You are allowed to bring your own wine for dinner but you will be charged a $14 corking fee. Breakfast was solid and I will say all the food we were served was very fresh. I have stayed at many bed and breakfasts over the years but I just was not wowed by this place. For a room and dinner, our total was $405.57 (to include taxes and tips). One thing to note, the gardens could be very relaxing but there is quite a bit of road noise as the Inn is located right off of HWY 501. read more

We stayed in the Garden Cottage and it was perfect in all ways, clean and comfortable. The cottage has a veranda with a hanging swing to sit in at night and have a glass a wine while listening to the wind chimes and the faint music coming from the perfectly lite and maintained garden. The morning brings a gourmet breakfast that is served on the bistro table on the veranda...what magic! We stayed 4 days and each day was perfect! Phil and Gloria, our hosts welcome you like old friends. They are attentive, but allow you your privacy. Arrowhead Inn is a bed and breakfast, so don't miss the breakfast. Breakfast is a three course experience. Phil is a great cook. Today for example, we had Phil's scones, with homemade jelly. Sheared eggs, with asparagus, chicken sausage, tomato layered on brie cheese, on spinach, with a sweet relish. We will be back, same time, next year. read more

Where do I even begin??? In one word - INCREDIBLE!!! We were given a gift certificate to use at Arrowhead. My wife called to make the reservation - Gloria set everything up for her. We opted for two nights in the Log Cabin. It was exquisite. When we arrived, Gloria personally greeted us, gave us a quick tour/history of the property, and showed us to the cabin. She made sure we knew how everything worked and told us to call if we needed anything. I'll admit that we are incredibly picky in terms of cleanliness, neatness, and attention to detail. My wife is borderline OCD when it comes to these types of things. So, staying in an old log cabin - we anticipated it being rustic and someone dusty. NOPE! When my wife commented on how clean it was - I knew that Phil & Gloria had gone above and beyond in terms of attention to detail. The food was AMAZING! I really can't say enough about it. Phil is clearly a gifted chef. Our breakfast both mornings was gourmet. It wasn't just some cheap thrown together continental breakfast. It was literally a gourmet meal. My only regret for the weekend was not doing dinner one night. If the breakfasts were this good, I can't imagine how good dinner would be. I wish we could give more than five stars!!!! read more

Hosted by the most wonderful couple, my room was thoughtful to the finest detail, warm (literally, it had a gas fireplace and air jet jacuzzi), and appointed with a perfect mix of amenities. Their gourmet breakfast was exactly that: gourmet. I walked into their gorgeous dining area and my place had already been set with coffee and a homemade brown sugar-topped fruit cup waiting. Mediterranean omelettes with warm homemade pita bread followed. Everything was outstanding in both taste and presentation. The best part: the price was lower than most hotels. The innkeepers were wonderful, providing a brief history of the residence prior to being an Inn, offering to accommodate any request, and the breakfast was worthy of a 5 Star restaurant! The rooms were lavish and delightful, we thoroughly enjoyed the whirlpool tub. The grounds are lush with little walkways to sitting areas, fire pit and pagoda. My husband and I needed a vacation from our vacation after a long week of wedding excitement. While traveling from Florida to New Jersey we usually stay at a Holiday Inn halfway for a nights' rest but Holiday Inns and other chain hotels leave a lot to be desired. We wanted a night to take in alone time before we jumped back into our crazy routines. I consider myself a very picky B&B chooser. I look for a place that offers that special something that other places don't have so our stay will always be unique and an adventure. The Arrowhead B&B is actually an old Colonial home that use to be a Plantation house as well as a trading post for the colony to trade with the Native Americans. History seems to ooze from this place, you feel like your living in a history book for your stay. Our room far exceeded our expectations. First of all it was clean! (I know your thinking..."well it better be!") ..but a lot of b&bs get frumpy over time and care in cleaning slumps but this place was so clean! Our room had a king sized bed(the most luxurious one I've ever slept in) and it was so badly needed after 7hrs driving. The fireplace made the room glow golden as we soaked in our jacuzzi. The innkeeper gave us wine at arrival which was very unexpected and very welcome after a crazy day driving. I really love how there was an antique table that folded out as a dinner table cause we had brought a pizza to the room for a quick late night dinner and ate in front of the fireplace. The breakfast the day after was delicious and so filling we didn't need a lunch on the road cause we were still stuffed. I've been to at least 25+ b&bs all over the East Coast and this place is one of the few I cannot wait to return to. We are happy to have a nice place to stay at now btwn NJ and FLA trips because after being at the Arrowhead, nothing midway could top this place. Guarenteed. Thanks so much to our lovely innkeepers, who we were lucky to be among their first few guests as they have newly taken over management now. You'd never know they weren't veteren innkeepers..no detail was spared. Ugh, now I just need an other excuse to drive to Fla so we can go back! read more
