Jazzys is a community favorite for weekend brunch events, open mic nights, and weekend nightlife!! Anyone who's been out in New Haven on the weekend has probably heard of Jazzys! This Black owned business keeps the New Haven nightlife full of life. Now onto the food, I've been to several events that catered from Jazzys and the food is always always AMAZING for catered events!!! I went to a Yale sponsored panel that featured sweet potato corn bread from Jazzys--- absolutely delicious. They also served curry chicken, baked chicken with their signature sauces, cilantro rice, rice and peas, lentil Pattie's, plantains and cabbage. I was blown away. I went to Jazzys to dine in for dinner and unfortunately the food wasn't as good in the restaurant. The menu also wasn't as expansive. I'm not sure if it was an off night for Jazzys but I wasn't impressed by my dine-in experience. That being said, I've had catered food from Jazzys about 5 times and each time the food is amazing! Excellent service, although there were only a few servers working and a massive party next to us, we were checked on regularly and it didn't take us more than 5 minutes after finishing our meal to close out our bill - and that includes applying our groupon. The atmosphere is so good, the music is even better! Our waiter let us know there are jazz shows, burlesque shows, and comedy shows at their restaurant throughout the month, and I'd love to come back! Now, the food was very good. I loved how well balanced my meal was. I ordered the Marley and really enjoyed every aspect of my dish. Let's start with the entertainment! The Keenan Asbridge Sextet was amazing! We were there with a decent sized group and I did run out of libations once, but I'll let it slide. What? Sure, because the food outshines any complaint I could muster. The dishes that stood out the most were the Batiste and the Jerk Pineapple Bowl. I haven't had anything like that pineapple bowl for a decade or more. Amazing flavors with the contrast of jerk, sweet pineapple and cilantro! Amazing, yeah I know I said that already, but it's worth repeating. Let me spend a moment on the Mac and Candied Yam Empanadas. It comes with a spicy jam dipping sauce. And we were fighting over the last pieces. It was that incredible. I know, my contrasting flavors thing is a theme, but it's true. And delicious !! I have to spend a paragraph on the drinks. We tried most of them. Very inventive. Kudos to the mixologist responsible for our favorite! Ding ding ding! The John Coltrane! A refreshing mixture of lychee, lime and rum. Amazing! I second place, we're going by the number of us that reordered, was the Dorothy Dandridge. That was a Passionfruit Lemonade concoction that was amazing as well. Can't wait to make a return trip. CT doesn't offer alot of black restaurants with live music, so Jazzy's feels like a breath of fresh air. I love that it's nestled right downtown. We visited on a Sunday so it wasn't very busy and no reservations were needed. They didn't have live music but the r&b playlist was on point. It's a big spot with tons of seating. The food was good, every thing was well prepared. I didn't feel very sluggish or tired afterwards. I wasn't a fan of the Mac and cheese or the beer selection though. The Mac was a little dry and the tap was broken for the draft beers. Overall, it's definitely worth checking out for the good vibes. read more

I went to a brunch event. Food was mediocrely prepared, very bland and not worth the price. Pricey small app portions. Service was terrible. They move like sloths and not attentive. Maybe get more servers or the manager needed to assist if they were short staffed. If you're having an "event" having more experienced servers would be suffice. The managers just stood and watched. I waited for a bit to leave this review as I wanted to get several feels for Jazzy's. Since December, I've been here three times (for a party, for a late lunch on a Saturday and for drinks on a Friday evening). I've also ordered via UberEats and the reason they deserve 4 stars is because of Steve, and everyone else who works in the kitchen. The food is GOOOOD!!! The food is VERY GOOOOOD. As the Executive Chef, Steve just never misses when it comes to the cuisine. I've been following him to every restaurant he has worked at and I'm never disappointed. Now that I've gotten that out the way, below is a pros & cons: Pros: -The food is amazing. I always get the blackened salmon, mac & cheese and plantains. -The servers and bartenders are always pleasant and just have a dope vibe to them. -The music on a Friday night is good. -Cross generational audience. -Prices are very reasonable. Made a last minute reservation for Friday evening, which I'm glad I did because it was lit! Decor: So because I was involved with my phone trying to pay for parking as I walked in, I didn't get to see what the first room looks like. The second room with the bar had a cute little setup with vintage looking couches and greenery/candles around the bar. Although I think the candles should of been lit, from what I can remember I think they were real so maybe some battery operated ones for safety reasons would add to the ambiance. The one thing that did stick out were the window curtains, I'm not sure if it's the color or the material but they could definitely be improved. They just seemed out of date. But I'm sure as time goes buy this place will make its tweaks here and there. Ambiance: Love love love the ambiance! They had a live band with a singer on stage which definitely set the mood. Everyone really seemed to be enjoying themselves. It's definitely a vibe! It had the right amount of flavoring and crisp on the outside and just the right amount of sweetness to it. The cabbage was yummy . The plantains were also good. They had flavor which some restaurants miss on. My least favorite thing on my plate was the rice and peas, it lacked flavor so I had to douse it in hot sauce. I had leftovers the next night, which for the exception of the rice I heated up in the air fryer along with the cornbread. Woooooo I tore those leftovers up! The rice actually tasted better from sitting in the box with the chicken and cabbage. The portions are great and you definitely get your money's worth! Nothing worst than paying over $20 on a skimpy meal...but I got to eat twice . Actually the worst is when you spend that much and the food sucks which in this case it did not! Winning! Aesthetic here was very nice. Decor has a soulful vibe with the deep red walls, hanging plants, and posters of famous musicians. Also, there was a great throwback of old school songs playing. It was also very spacious here with lots of seating for dining which I appreciated. My friend and I had no issues getting seated on a Saturday night so that was a plus. The crowd was definitely more grown which I appreciated too. Service was pretty good, but I think staff, should know more about the food on the menu. I asked the bartender about the party jollof, as I'm Nigerian, and wanted to know how they make theirs. She had no clue how to to explain it to me and asked about 4 other people before getting back to me that it's their take on Haitian jollof which is odd since jollof is not a Haitian dish, but West African. Also, I wouldn't call the rice I was served jollof--more like rice pilaf with some tomato stew added. I also ordered the sexy tenders as a side. They were good, though. Came in for the Thursday night comedy night. Arrived around 5pm and stayed till about 10pm. The decor is very interesting and the album covers are very nostalgic so its a nice trip down ole school memory lane. The bartender on duty when we 1st got there was very attentive and cool. She basically took care of us all night even through other waitstaff came in on duty after her. We ordered wings and was tod after order was placed that they didn't have any which I thought was odd for a restaurant to be having a comedy event and your out of your number item. But we found other things to order and enjoy (please sleep pics) and everything was really good and filling. The music and the comedy show was ok the last comedian that was very funny. This restaurant is on the newer side. I went 2 times last week and might I say I was extremely impressed. The food was delicious and the ambiance was just relaxed and calm. It had a beautiful Renaissancence jazz vibe. The owner and his wife are awesome and will definitely make you feel welcomed. The only cons of this restaurant is some of the servers/bartenders are very unseasoned, need more training with being swifter and alittle more attentive. Do not waste your time or your money!! I have never bought tickets for a "Brunch" event and Brunch, i.e. food, was not included. Purchased tix for their "Last Last Brunch" event. No where on the event info did it say that the ticket was just for admission into the restaurant. When we were seated, the waitress asked for our brunch order and proceeded to read the only 4 menu options. If I was paying additional for food, I would expect a full brunch menu. I have bought tickets for similar events and there was a full buffet or menu and unlimited mimosas included, albeit unlimited mimosas may be an up charge. The shrimp & grits were subpar and our food was served in plastic takeout bowls. The mimosas were "unlimited" but I watched the manager pour one bottle of champagne into a large pitcher and then fill the rest with orange juice. The mimosa didn't even have a fizz as there was so much orange juice. When we were finished eating the waitress asked if we were ready our bill. When I said we paid for brunch tickets the manager came over and was very nasty and said the food was not included just entrance to the restaurant. Who has "Brunch" without food?? And she was a whole trip. On top of charging us addtional for the food, they added a 15% Service/Event fee. As a Black executive, I absolutely believe in supporting black-owned businesses. I was pleased for the most part. Service was slow that was my only complaint. I'm sure as time goes on they will be properly staffed. The drinks were tasty which is a plus. Jazzy's Cabaret is the latest addition to the CT food scene and offers arguably the most unique, modern dining and social experience in the state. First and foremost, the food is outstanding. Steve Ross (formerly of Cast Iron Soul, Anchor Spa, etc) is the Executive Chef and you already know his meals are amazing. The menu is international comfort food so its contains some of the classics while still being diverse enough to satisfy all palettes. The food is ordered through a kiosk and delivered to your table. I love the concept because it's a contactless process and makes sure you get what you ordered. Reservations are available through OpenTable. Delivery is also available through UberEats and Door Dash, but for the real experience visit the brick and Mortar restaurant and check out the beautiful location and decor. Jazzy's also has several music and social events scheduled each week. Make sure you check out IG to stay up to date on the latest events. The owners Jason and Morgan are terrific, very involved in the community, and have done a great at providing a bespoke experience. Want to give this place the benefit of the doubt as I know they just opened but there are still many issues that need to be addressed. When my friends and I arrived, it looked as if the restaurant was closed since there were no customers inside OR any staff at the front desk to greet anyone--so we were hesitant from the start. When we did walk in, we were greeted by a lovely woman who showed us the different seating areas there are (the place is huge!). But when we sat down to look at the menu, we were informed that we wouldn't be ordering through her, we would have to leave our table to order at a Snackpass kiosk at the front of the restaurant. I have never heard of anything like this. When the meals are close to $20 each and still asking for a tip, this form of ordering does concern me. Not to mention that we had to put in our phone numbers to get text alerts about our orders...at a sit down restaurant? Now, the food was not bad. We ordered the Haitian, Asian, and Vegetarian meals. The flavors were tasty. However, one of our guest's meals arrived 25 minutes after the rest of ours and she never actually got a side dish that she ordered (even after the chef came out to personally tell her that it would be right out). Another side note is that the menu as it stands is not vegetarian friendly....having 8-10 meal options from different countries is a great idea! However, do not label the ONLY vegetarian option as it is...maybe allow for additional vegetarian options for the other meal options. read more

Went here for their New Year celebration and it was my first time visiting this restaurant. I had to purchase my ticket prior to the event which included a three course meal. Given the price of the ticket with the amount of food i received I think the price was reasonable. The service was also good however, a bit slow. Given we provided our order prior we waited quite sometime to even receive the appetizer. Once I received my food I ordered the Rasta Pasta the food was cold and not to my liking. The sauce was very grainy. I do think the concept was great however, the food was not the best. I would try this place one more time given I went when there was an event. I had a wonderful experience the last three times I did take out at Jazzy's. The take out option was convenient where I could either order online or through Grubhub. Every time I walked in, I was always greeted with a smile by the hostess or owners Jason or Morgan. The ambiance was amazing with the neo-soul music in the background, laid-back low lighting & stylish decor. The first time I had the Marley which consisted of mouth watering fall of the bone barbecued jerk chicken. The Caribbean cabbage, rice and peas and baked plantains were such a wonderful sweet and spicy combination. I also had a side of flavorful Southern Fried Okra & some classic Fried Chicken. The second time around I had the Magnolia. This meal consisted of a very generous amount of jumbo shrimp which could put any New Orleans restaurant to the test! The cauliflower rice and collard greens as well as the plantains were flavored to perfection. The Side order of Honey Butter Cornbread was simply mmmm! The third time I enjoyed the Wu-Tang which consisted of Asian orange ginger chicken, fried rice, chopped bok choy, and marinated cucumbers. This meal was delicious! I was very impressed with the diverse types of dishes Jazzy's had to offer. Jazzy's has a really neat vibe. The decor and lighting set a great mood. It is a mix of a classy jazz club and a trendy urban bar. Each plate was an excellent balance of flavors and components. The entrees consist of a thoughtful combination of protein, carb and veggie, each making a complete meal. The Outkast has fried chicken, sweet potatoes and collard greens. The chicken was suuper crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It all came out pretty much perfectly. My only complaint was the collards were a bit salty. The drink menu is quite expansive. Although we came for dinner I have a feeling this is an amazing night spot. Especially because they host shows of all kind. Next time we'll catch a comedy show with some drinks! read more

This was the third time my wife and I have been to Jazzy's. We were looking forward to a romantic Valentine's Day dinner. While the food was not the best we have had there it was acceptable. What was not acceptable was that the section we were sitting in against the windows was very, very cold. I had to eat my dinner in my coat and scarf. So i have heard great things about this place but the people that told me went in the evening for dinners. I decided to go for Galentines event they were having and it wasn't the best experience. The event started at 12, we got there at 1230pm and no one was there but another group of ppl waiting to be seated. We had to wait a well because apparently the hostess (owner?) Came in with us and had to settle in. In the mean time you can see that they just went grocery shopping because they were bringing groceries in the front door. The place is very nice, ambiance of the bar area, eating area and the window view area is very nice! They don't serve you bread or any starter while you wait, so we requested the cornbread (which was very good). The server was pleasant and did her best but the unlimited mimosas started 1 hr late (which they extended) but then the food took longer to come out. While waiting for the food we went to the bathroom and it was a mess. It looked as though no one cleaned up from the party from the night before. Three did came out, looked and smells good.. the girls said it was good but I had a stand of hair in mine which was a turnoff. So all in all we paid for an event in which the place wasn't ready/ prepared for and my first impression of it wasn't that great. I may give it another try but not anytime soon. Came here with some friends to get a quick drink before a show. We saw they did have a dress code but the staff was gracious and let us sit at the bar for a couple of drinks. The ambience is really nice and felt like you were stepping into an old School bar and event space, kind of what I imagine Cotton Club to be in the heyday of the Renaissance before a show. The drinks were solid and they have good shelf liquors, including my favorite vodka, Reyka, which I never, ever, see in the wild. Service is attentive and not overbearing, and it's lively enough to people watch, but quiet enough to have conversation without yelling I would come back for a meal or to hang out at the bar to see show at this establishment, it's lovely. read more

Food took at least 45 minutes to come My husband's jerk chicken was super hot and his rice was crunchy.. and his plantains were the color of tar...straight burnt ( he said his plate tasted like it was warmed over) jerk is a spice it's not suppose to overwhelm the food but unfortunately it did for both our dishes. I tried to order the one thing that was pretty good my first time there which was the mac&cheese/yam egg roll (unavailable) so I ordered chick en tenders, over cooked, dry and inedible. We went there recently to listen to some live music and made a reservation for a table for dinner. When we arrived at 6pm there were 2 people sitting at the bar and 1 bartender working - but it took 20 minutes to get our round of drinks. Then when we went to the front to sit for dinner we were told that it was first come first served so our table was gone - despite making the reservation. Later we went back to the bar for another round of drinks - the bar area was packed with 2 bartenders working. After waiting another 20 minutes without being served we left and went around the corner to 80 Proof American Kitchen + Bar where the service was much better. Jazzys has great potential but needs better service and a more professional environment. read more

The bad food overwhelmed everything about this. I ordered The Outkast $25.00--1/4 fried chicken with sides of collard greens and candied yams. There was no choice of dark or white; you were just served dark. The chicken was obviously reheated and Lord knows from how many days previous. The collard greens were not finely chopped and contained big pieces of stems and little seasoning. The candied yams were partially cooked--soft in some spots, hard in others and very bland seasoning. I am flabbergasted that this place calls itself "soul food!" The rest of my party was equally dissatisfied. We all vowed to never return. Service was slow. Don't plan on eating together! No two meals arrived together. For that matter, even sodas were spaced inordinately far apart. As for Ambiance, to us, it just seemed cluttered, almost hoarder-ish. Maybe the photos on the wall would work better if they were all straightened out! One major turnoff--the beverage glasses are placed upside down on the table, waiting to be used. The idea of the naked glass face down touching the table somehow seemed like a health violation. Finally, they tack on a 20% gratuity and have a space for an "additional tip." LOL!!! Here is a tip: hire a real chef and an experienced waitstaff. Rarely do I write a bad review. If the food is bad, I just let it go but this was so horrendous, I feel have to warn people. Outstanding establishment with mouth-mouthing food, superior customer service and exceptional interior design! Dining at Jazzy's Cabaret was absolutely wonderful. The collard greens and yams were the best I've ever had. The fried chicken, mac & cheese and cornbread reminded me of the soul food you only find the southern states. It was definitely a notch above any eateries I've visited in the northeast. The customer service was amazing. The hostess, waiter, chef and co-owner (Mr. Watts) checked on us several times. The other owner (Mrs. Watts) arrived later and stopped a meeting with her staff to make sure we enjoyed our experience. The ambience is unique, creative, fresh, warm and inviting. My best friend and I spent a delightful evening there while I visited for a few days. Great vibe, good food (well seasoned!) and kudos to Rico the bartender who was very accommodating. 5 stars would have been my choice but the hostess wasn't that engaged and took a while to acknowledge us. They also were supposed to be hosting a jazz show (asking an additional fee to see the show.$30!!!) around 7pm but it never started while we were there, and we were there well after 7. What a beautiful place inside. We ordered it was five of us. After sometime are drinks came they messed up a friends drink she went to the bar to order another or fix the first one. They came back to the table and told us they ran out of some of what we ordered an half hour ago. We waited and waited and waited. Cornbread came to the table. It was my first time and not my last. Jazzy's Cabaret is just what New Haven needed. A beautiful black owned establishment that everyone can enjoy. I love their menu as it touches different parts of the black cultural food experience from Haitian and Jamaican to African. The infusion is wonderful! Today I had some of the Jollof Rice and the chicken tenders! DELICIOUS! Thank you Jason and Morgan for giving New Haven a taste of something different. As with everything in life, it takes time to get everything in gear. But I like what I've seen so far, the atmosphere & the vibe! So much so that I booked my birthday party here!
