Drove 3+ hours to purchase a New Trek Domane from Rory. Transaction went fine, however, when I got home I noticed a number of things wrong with the bike. 2 Stem spacers were cracked, the drive train side crank arm threads were stripped and the Mid-tube bag was missing. My fault for not checking, but I put some of my trust to the bike shop for doing a pre-sale inspection... guess not. I've called 5 times now about getting the tube bag and Jennifer claims she mailed it 3 times. Every call is a new excuse. All I wanted was the bag that was supposed to come with the bike and the task seems too difficult for her. If you buy a bike here check it over extremely well before you leave because they have a book of excuses to use if anything is damaged or missing. read more

I purchased my e-bike from this store in 2020, and it was one of the best decisions I've made. The bike suits my needs and was in my budget. It's very light, and I can ride with or without turning on the assist modes. I've returned for minor adjustments and never been charged. Jays cycles, located in downtown Princeton, is conveniently located. Shop is small but crammed full of new bikes. A variety of models most are priced+++. Sales staff are all very knowledgeable. Bike parts, bike repair are all available. Bike repairs aren't cheap but are comparable versus other local shops. I've shopped here, had service done (tune ups) and stopped by today for a part (tube needed for my son's bike). Service is all done extremely well. As I was paying for my tube today, I appreciated the mechanic, who was upfront, reminding me to take a cotton ball along the inner part of the tire to make sure whatever caused the flat wasn't still lodged in the tire. I was replacing myself and wouldn't have thought to check that. I appreciated the value added on my purchase. We will continue to come here! Thanks Jays!! read more

I had great experience here before pandemic. Later I had several issues like when they fixed hydraulic brakes such a way that water leaked inside and the brakes froze solid on the way home, but I thought these were just unlucky one offs. Today the experience was awful. I left the bike in August to fix gear switch, replace broken handle, and give it a thorough tune up because it was in a crash. They said it'll take a week and cost 120$. A month after when we asked about the bike they said they haven't even started working on it. Finally got it back today. They did replace the part in the gear switch, they did NOT replace the handle, they did NOT give it any tune up at all because it is still all crooked, they stole our bike chain (!) and return the bike without the chain at all. For all these we were charged 150$. Never again. There are plenty of other options. read more

It was also great that I was able to get a helmet and bike lock. They took the time to show me how to fit the helmet and explained why it is so important to ensure it fits properly. If I could give them ten stars I would. They are not only the most wonderful, smart and kind people, but the best bike shop I've ever been to. My husband bought a Trek Aliant 9+9s. When we first went to Jay's my husband was recuperating from knee replacement surgery. Jennifer spent about a half hour with us answering all his questions knowing he wouldn't be buying anything at that time. So when he finally decided what he wanted we went back to buy it at Jay's. Just Bought a TREK XM700 ebike for my brothers 50th! Richard helped me get a test ride and it was a sweet pedal assist ride upto 28MPH! I test rode a 3.0 VADO with same type of electric Bosch engine @jays in Westfield for a lower price but ended up going with Jays and Richard. My cousin bought his TREK there too. I reached out to find out if this business had a part my boyfriend needed for his bike. They said they carry them, so my boyfriend went in to check it out. While there the woman he spoke with belittled him and told him he had a child's bike and they did not have the part he was looking for. Didn't offer to tell him where he'd be able to find the part and wasn't helpful at all. Overall that's just bad customer service, and definitely don't recommend going here unless you like being made to feel little. read more

Good experience buying a bike over the phone and website during this pandemic. Picked a bike I liked. Called and asked about sizing and they were very helpful. They worked hard to find my bike (it was sold out almost everywhere) all the way in California and got it! I had questions on specifics due to the fact i will be converting it into an e-bike and they were so helpful and went and looked for the small measurements I needed. Gosh, I SO wanna like this place. It's so convenient to me and they're a Trek dealer with a good range of bikes right in their showroom. But compared to EVERY other bike store in greater Princeton-- they're the absolute worse. They're terrible at bike fitting. Their service dept, while competent, is always slow. And the staff constantly whines about how busy they are. Store makes ridiculous claims about how many bikes it has on display but doesn't feel like that at all. And don't get me started about the curmudgeonly Jay. He's the antithesis of customer service. If you do dare to use this place (and only good reason is if you don't have a car!), if he is working, run away. Speak to Jen or Jay's son instead. Knapp's in Lawrenceville and Sourland Cycles in Hopewell are MUCH better bets. Nicer staff, more attention on bike fit, great service departments. Kopps in Princeton is much smaller but far better than Jays. Even Halters (has some issues) in Skillman is better. Jays is dead last. read more

Over covid I have become obsessed with cycling but my bike definitely needed a tune up. As a Princeton local I wanted to support the local businesses. I stopped at Jay's Cycles to drop off my bike, the minute I pulled up the man that worked there came out and helped me get my bike out of my trunk, no questions asked. He was very kind and said my bike needed a tune up. It was very sad thinking I had to part with my bike for a week but I knew it was in good hands! A few days later I received a notification to pick up my bike. I came immediately and that same men without question helped me put my bike in my car. I know it doesn't seem like a huge gesture but I'm 5'2" and it is a struggle to pick up and lift that into the car myself. While I was in Florida at another bike shop 3 young males just stared and watched me struggle to get my bike in and out of my trunk, unlike the older male that worked at Jay's. It was probably Jay himself who helped me. And I thank him for fixing my bike and the little gesture he did. It's the little things and that meant a lot! My bike is now so much more fun to ride and feels so much more smooth than before. Highly recommend! read more

I bought my bike from another place, and decided that I was too old to put it together. Seriously--it's fine when you're 10-12, but at this age, I'll pay someone to do it. They charge $75. We dropped it off on Thursday and it will be ready on Monday. While dropping it off, Jim tested out some bikes (they only sell Trek); he found one he liked. Unlike mine, it doesn't have fenders and a rack, but he's getting a rack put on. It will be ready on Monday, when our other one is ready. No bells or whistles (that comes later), but a good bike at $350. Nice people. They didn't blink an eye when Jim went in with a white and baby blue Schwinn for his wife. He got to ride around on the test version of the one he decided to purchase. I haven't been into the shop, but what I've learned is that unlike Kopp's, there are regular hours and a decent staff that don't make you feel like an idiot when you simply want a bike for riding around town. We like this place. Update 9/1/09: I dinged them a star because the idiot who got my bike made me feel bad. Over the past week, the other guys in the shop were pleasant, but this douche has an attitude problem and I left the store without getting the bike adjusted. By the way--a ponytail on the top of the head looks ridiculous on anyone over the age of 2, and baths are highly recommended. read more

Really rude and snobby. Man behind counter was stressed with just myself and one other patron. I was waiting quietly and politely, but he inquired as to what I needed, and I replied I needed air in my tire, wanted to purchase toe clips, and without glasses hoped he could read my pedal as L or R. This obviously taxed his zero-to-begin-with patience. Begrudgingly he pointed out air was outside and has always been there (my first time here), and when I asked about clips again he rudely interjected "I'm the only one here!". I bought a Trek bike there about 14 years ago. I rode the bike well for a long time & it was pretty run down...chain, cables, brakes not working etc. I took in to see if they could tune-up, but expecting them to say it wasn't worth it & see if I wanted to trade-in and buy new. However, they did an amazing job w/ a tune-up at a really reasonable price. They never tried to upsell anything, were just good honest bike pros. The bike rides better now than I can ever remember. We walked in the store, were completely ignored, but they did take the time to answer the phone when we called while parked outside. During this pandemic i was in need of a bike not just any bike i was looking for a specific bike. I looked around and came across Jay's. I saw the bike i wanted and like every other site it said it was available. When i would try to press purchase on other sites it would of course say not available. I get to Jay's site though it was after hours i decided to take a chance and see if they really have it in stock. What do i have to lose ? I proceeded to purchase then the next morning before they were even opened i receive an email that read "We received your order. It will be ready later today. We will contact you as soon as it is ready to arrange pickup." I received another email letting me know that the bike was ready for pick up. Upon arrival i met Jennifer (a pleasure dealing with). She confirmed my name and in a few minutes, out comes my bike. She even took it back in to add a kickstand. The drive was worth every mile to receive the service and the bike. I walked into the store with a request for a relatively minor - 10 minute, max - repair that I would have taken care of myself if I had my tools handy. What I got was complete unwillingness to work with me on the timing, for a not-very-competitive price, along with a healthy serving of attitude. I could forgive the first two, I guess, if the third weren't part of their package deal. They wouldn't do it for me same-day, and when I mentioned that I couldn't get back to the store during their opening hours due to work travel until next Monday, said "well I guess Monday is it, then". Thanks. Likewise, when I asked if I could buy the (relatively inexpensive - less than their charge to do the repair) tool from them to repair it myself, I got an even more annoyed "no, we don't sell them or loan them out." It's okay if you're busy and cater to higher-end customers - just be nice about it. I left, went straight down the street to Kopp's, and along with a friendly and helpful attitude, they quoted me a 30% better price; I got a call in 45 minutes saying the bike was already ready for pickup. I'm sure this reads like a commercial for Kopp's, but I just went into both establishments for the first time today and will give Kopp's my business from now on. I've been to lots of bike stores, and Jay's seems to fall into the typical arrogant local bike store mold. Steer clear. read more

If you are not buying a bike she has no time for you and is quite rude. They will purposely make you wait when they are not helping anyone. Every time I have gone here it is the same story. Two stars.. The Very good: I made a mistake with my brakes, and one of the younger mechanics fixed it quickly and for free. The bad: Upon buying my second hybrid bike from Jay's and informing Jay himself the old bike I was stolen, I was greeted by disinterest and basically ignored by sales staff. After purchasing a third hybrid bike form Jay's in two years, the sales guy wouldn't even cut me a deal on water bottles or a kickstand. (This was about 4 or 5 years ago; I would walk out and stop the sale if it happened today) Everything about this store is average, except for some basic disinterested customer service. read more

The staff is friendly but they overcharge for bikes, parts, and labor. I bought a new bike from them, and having done a lot of shopping around online, they wanted to charge me $100 more than the market price for the model of bike if I ordered it from any other business. I was able to haggle the price down, thankfully. On another occasion, I took an old bike in to get major parts replaced - I was shocked that for the price of parts and labor, I could've just bought a new bike. I wish that someone from the shop had called me with an estimate so that I wasn't so surprised at the exorbitant cost. read more

These guys charge a lot for very simple fixes. And why should I wait for two days for a simple brake adjustment?! It can be done in 20 min! Everything in their shop have inflated prices. Bike shops in Manhattan charges less than these guys! Furthermore, the staff are arrogant and dismissive. Definitely a bad experience. On the plus side, they did properly adjusted my brakes. I probably will come back only if I cannot find alternative bike shops. read more

The woman working was being very helpful to a customer in the store, but everyone else was very slow, with no sense of urgency to serve customers. Went here in search of a new road bike. Rich sent my boyfriend and I out on comparable bikes to the one I wanted. When we returned, Rich was looking at the specs trying to find the right fit for me. There was never any pressure during the purchase process and I ordered a bike with a down payment. I did have to call during the end of the 2-3 day window they provided me for when the bike would be ready and then I came in and was properly fitted. Again I felt Rich was very professional, precise and knowledgable when I asked him questions. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase and would recommend them and consider future purchases/adjustments, etc from them. Only downside is, it is downtown Princeton and therefore downtown Princeton prices-which I compared to a little above average. read more

Go here only if you must. It's very convenient within Princeton, but there are way better bike shops out there and make sure you keep your original ticket estimate if you get work done. I was up-charged upon pick up. When I asked for a quick and simple saddle adjustment before after paying and before leaving, the mechanic handed me a wrench with a look of annoyance and without saying a word. read more

I avoid Jay's because of how terrible they treat their customers. It is like they are insulted when you are them a question. It is not just one individual there that is like that. I have been treated poorly by three employees there. As a result, I no longer go there even though it is right next to my job and their competitor is further away and more expensive. Further, this place really only has expensive Trek bikes. They are nice but they do not have much more of a selection than this.
