    My sweets I picked.
    Courtney J.

I only am familiar with really basic Indian sweets such as gulab jamun or kulfi, so when I saw this traditional Indian sweets shop, I had to stop by. The workers were really friendly and tried to answer all of my many, many questions. They have a display case with actual samples of the items so you can see exactly what it is you're getting. They'll probably offer to let you taste a few of the items as well. They didn't know the English names for some of the things I was asking about, but a friendly customer stepped in and helped out with that. We ended up with three little treats. Most of them are very sweet and rich, so even though it didn't look like much, I couldn't eat a lot of these kinds of sweets at a time. The coconut one that is pictured in the center was my favorite due to the flavor. What was unclear to me at the time though, was the price. It had to do with the weight or something and not the individual item. Since I misunderstood, I thought everything was very expensive and I didn't purchase much when in fact the prices were very reasonable. Oh well, next time I will know, so I can try more things.

I am not very satisfied with all the hype I have heard about it and what I have experienced. We ordered 35 counts of their small gift boxes as a return gift for an event. It has 2 pieces of Kaja, 2 pieces of Kova, and we replaced the laddu with Mysorepak as we made laddus at home as part of the menu. The kajas were dark in color and turned out very soggy. kova was okay. The mysorepak looked more like a besan burfi and gave a burnt smell when bitten (if you know how burnt milk smells). we liked their box but not the contents. I think the only special item to rely on them is the kova kajjikaya (with coconut inside) which is what I originally tasted and chose them. I don't recommend this for other sweets.

Unhygienic Sweets. I found a long hair in kovakai laddoo (white shell with coconut filling). See picture. These Indian chefs haven't even learnt to tie up and cover their head while cooking. It was disgusting to bite into, good knows, whose hair. On top of that, they've raised their prices. Stay away!!

I could eat the whole pack in one sitting....

I only tried the kaja, but my co worker brought some in for a pot luck, and I've been ordering them through him since then!!!! I think the most damage I've done is 3 in one sitting...... now I buy them for gifts or parties. Just delicious, every time.

    KAJA

We usually get Kaja from her. They are over cooked sometimes and WAY OVERPRICED for the ingredients that they use.

Never had a bad produce or bad experience shopping there in general. Parking is right in front of the store and the customer service here was always great. It's also right off of the toll roads and main roads making it convenient to swing by. Definitely a brightly lit store and had a nice ambiance. I especially enjoyed their grilled salmon in their deli area. That with salad mix made for a great dinner or lunch every time.

Like others who have also reviewed the new one, I, too, envisioned it would be like the ones in Fair Lakes and Ashburn. But, alas, no :( Still, it is far better than the old location. While this one doesn't offer any seating areas where one can order food, it is more spacious. Thus, their produce section is larger than the meat and seafood sections. Although they brag about having a huge cheese selection, it's about the same size as it was before. The problem regarding the size of the place is most likely because Reston doesn't have a spot for a huge store. Unless they were to find a plot of land in a good location, then build a free-standing one. That would be pricey! We think the aisle signs could be better labeled. For example, we wanted to get some tofu, but despite wandering around, I couldn't find it. Finally, I saw an employee and asked him. He directed me to a refrigerated case that was near the bakery and sushi counter. Otherwise, we found everything we wanted to get. So, yes, we will return...but not to do all our shopping there. They don't call it "Whole Paycheck" for nothing.

Every culture has their own interpretation of taking the basic ingredients of flour, yeast, salt and water and transforming it via various baking methods into their version of "bread." There is a long history of using circular oval shaped ovens in Asia and the Middle East as a way of both conserving space and to efficiently cook foods with even heat distribution and small footprints in otherwise cramped kitchens. In India these ovens are called tandoors while in Japan they are referenced as kamados. Sauson International Grocery has been in operation since 2011, and the owner, who everyone knows as "Mr. Rashid," is of Persian descent having emigrated from Iran. He is always super friendly and willing to answer questions I may have about the wide variety of Middle Eastern spices and foods this place stocks. Don't be surprised if you strike up a conversation with him, and he offers you a cup of wonderfully spiced tea and a cookie or pastry from the delectable dessert case. As some of the reviews have noted, parking is tricky. There is a small covered garage under the building. But you may have to park at the nearby church or on the street and then walk over to the store. This place is well known for their bread, which is being made throughout the day. I came a bit later today, so they had just finished making a few batches. But it's not uncommon to witness skilled bakers kneading and rolling, and then slapping the dough onto the circular metallic oven for a few minutes, before piping hot fresh bread emerges. The bread is amazing. It is pliable, without being overly chewy. It is slightly salty, with a great smoky almost charred flavor. I've had it cut into pieces and then dipped with hummus or rolled into gyros or used to sandwich kabob meat. And believe it or not, it's even pretty good as a PB&J. Everyone, and I mean everyone, I've introduced this product to usually asks: (1). What type of bread is this? and (2). Where can I buy it? Note: As of this review, the current price is $8.05 for FOUR large round pieces of bread. Apart from the bread, there is also a small butcher shop in the back, and a kitchen where hot foods like kabob platters are made. There is also a small seating area in front of the store, where folks can sip tea and relax while enjoying sweets from the display case. Sauson is a really cool place and while I usually go with the intention of only buying bread, it's not uncommon for me to walk out with a few bags of unique Middle Eastern groceries.

Impressive variety of selection and wonderful hospitality. Can't wait to go back soon.read more
