Dr. Zelaya seems attentive, informative and caring. However he seems to double book appointments. There have been people in front of me to see him when I arrive on time for my appts. This leads to a long wait time. Additionally the receptionist who "greets" you is quite rude. I've been here a few times and she has had the same attitude each time. read more

I made an appointment with Dr. Zelaya a few days in advance. It is easy to make an appointment. Staff are friendly and welcoming. They took me before my scheduled time. My only issue was I was not told that a different practitioner in the office was going to see me until they walked in the room. My exam was short and felt rushed. I was prescribed medication that ended up not working and my issue became worse. I saw another doctor (they had availability for my emergency) and am seeing results for a different course of treatment. I just wish my examination was more thorough and maybe I wouldn't have had to seek treatment elsewhere in an emergency setting. read more

Ive been seeing this doctor for years. He diagnosed my skin problem. Why is my insurance company having difficulty getting them to do there part in providing the required information so that they can make a decision regarding my medication? This has been happening for the past few years. For every new prescription Prior Authorization is required it takes months and multiple calls to the doctors office and pharmacy to get medication I've been using for many years. read more

I noticed that some other reviewers mentioned that no one touched their skin and they otherwise felt the exam was insufficient and rushed. I can fortunately say that I felt that the NP was knowledgeable and did not rush. He told me what I was dealing with, treatment options, and additional information very calmly and answered all of my questions. I do wish that they would not overbook as they did (I waited just over an hour after my appointment time to be seen for a 10 minute consultation). I'll be prepared for the wait next time. read more

First time I went here was years ago in high school for acne. I was prescribed a topical cream and pills by Dr. Zelaya himself! But that didn't work and I didn't try something else until now. Months ago I went in to ask for Accutane and since we already tried alternatives previously, I was approved by the NP. He never rushed our visits, asked about side affects, and explained everything thoroughly. He's really nice and patient. I had major issues with my insurance changing a few times over my course. This delayed my Rx coverage and all that. Getting paperwork submitted on the office's behalf and updates was very frustrating at times but I do know how busy this office is and how complex my insurance situation was. I'm just glad that my acne is gone and don't have to worry about this anymore. So thanks for the approval! For those talking about long wait times, try to go within their first hour open of the day. I've been going there for the past seven months and never had to wait more than maybe 20 minutes. But one time I was booked at the wrong time and had to wait an hour. read more

This place is a scam. Before making an appointment I was sure to clarify that the very small procedure I needed was to be included under the normal office visit and would not incur an extra bill. I made sure to confirm this again before entering my appointment and again with the tech before the whopping 10 second procedure was done. Then a few weeks later I received a massive bill. I called to resolve this and they said it was a mistake. A couple months later I received another bill. The doctor will not speak to his patients about such matters. This place clearly does not care about its patients. This place is a cash factory. Since leaving here I am glad to have found another dermatologist who actually cares about his patients and speaks to them face to face. read more

Can I give it 0 stars? I waited one hour and fifteen minutes for a confirmed appointment. My appointment lasted five minutes and consisted of a physician's assistant giving me three options, non of which were helpful. I walked out wishing I could get my $20 co-pay and hour and twenty minutes back. That said, I vow to spend at least 15 more minutes warning you to NOT waste your time. Waited over a hour to see the doctor , when I never even got to see Javier Zelaya I got to meet his assistant which rushed me out the room and really made no sense what he explained . He gave a terrible prescription which didn't help me at all . Total waste of time. The doctor kept telling me I had jock itch and didn't even look down there the second or third time. I went to another dermatologist and they instantly replied " this is not jock itch " and ran several tests on me. Quite possibly the worst run clinic I have been in. I scheduled an appointment with Zelaya, but instead was seen by a PA (which I don't mind if I was told this before hand.) The PA seemed nice but unsure about everything. She kept referring to Zelaya in the third person as if he was the wizard of Oz, but never went to talk to him. At the end of the visit she prescribed a very expensive medication that had many cheap alternatives stating it was much better which was a lie. I am in medical school, and have worked in private clinics for years before hand. She was definitely pushing the drug because the clinic got a kickback from the pharmaceutical company. After leaving the clinic, I found out how large the copay was for the medication she pushed and phoned the clinic twice asking for the common and generic alternative be phoned to my pharmacy. Three days days later I phone for a third time to ask why my Rx wasn't phoned and the receptionist informed me she phoned in the same (expensive) Rx to some random pharmacy. I reinstructed them that I wanted a generic to my pharmacy and it never happened. Now I am looking at $100 bill from their esteemed office. This office is not a medical establishment. It's a business to swindle people from their money without even getting anything in return. Zelaya should be ashamed to have an MD next to his name, for he certainly doesn't deserve it. read more

I wouldn't bother with this Dermatologist. For someone who is supposed to take care of your skin, especially on your face he is very lacks. He barely takes time to look at your skin and just prescribes medicine. The wait is always long and once in a room you are in and out in less than 3 mins. He prescribed something too strong for my face, i'm peeling and burning currently. He doesn't even touch your skin. I never met a doctor so disconnected. He actually talks so fast its hard for you to grasp what he is talking about smh. Find someone who will care about your issues. read more

I have been going to Dr.Zelaya for years. I can not believe other reviewers were so cruel. I have occasional big bouts with ezcema, and many odd skin disasters that Dr.Zelaya has been able to treat with success. Now I have two sons and I bring them to see Dr.Zelaya as well. Sometimes his visit with you might be brief but that is because he has great expertise and doesn't need to spend terribly long with a lot of appointments that might be somewhat routine in his practice. What's important, is he is very attentive and can almost always accurately diagnose what's going on and accurately help. I have been to other dermatologists when in a pinch but I always regretting not visiting with Dr. Zelaya, and i never will again! read more

First and foremost Dr. Zelaya is a great dermatologist. Period. Second, he hires really excellent staff. My son sees his NP, Sean Thompson regularly for an injectable for eczema and he is fantastic as well!!! Oh, by the by, my son is diagnosed on the spectrum and Sean and the entire team is soooo hospitable, warm, welcoming and accommodating to my son. i cannot recommend this office higher simply because they only give 5 stars to do so, but if there more bang - they'd have them! After having a horrible experience with another "super star"derm here in Brooklyn [who out of respect for them since it was their staff that behaved badly] i had to get a referral for a new derm. Dr. Zelaya was the recommendation. He actually was my derm a zillion years ago lol and he was excellent then too! have not doubts, don't believe the negative reviews...it simply doesn't match the man or his professional decorum or his amazing front reception and back end staff who work really hard o get you the appointments that work for you, facilitate getting your meds filled [i.e. fight or work with your insurance carrier] and oh and get them delivered to you too and just being so darn user friendly!! Yup, I agree with much of below and that he pretty much sucks. This is my first ever Yelp, so I guess I feel inspired as well. The main thing is I have a bigger scar than I need to on my back. I had a minor procedure done and he did a horrendous job stitching me up and so I have a big scar for a minor thing. My general doctor even asked to see the results to make sure there wasn't a complication. On top of his inadequate job performance and the waiting room time, his lack of interest was also frustrating. I saw him a few times and he never took enough time to really get to know the problem. I had a few questions and he didn't give straight-forward answers or seem like he really wanted to be bothered with more than the main thing I came in for. We've only been to Dr Zelaya a few times and I found him to be cold and dismissive. But when my daughter developed shingles and needed a dermatologist's care I called his office as a last resort. Dr Zelaya's office "gatekeepers" are AWFUL. When I BEGGED for an appointment, the woman I spoke with said "if you think this is an emergency then call 911 or go to the emergency room. Never a long wait! I really don't relate to the other reviews. I didn't use Yelp to find Dr. Zelaya, I used Zoc Doc and his reviews on that app are great. I have been going to his office for about a year now and each time he is extremely attentive and cautious. I went to one derm before picking Dr. Zelaya, which the derm prior didn't warn me of a side effect of the meds he provided. After the wait, the doctor spent 5 mins with me, barely looked at and didn't touch my skin, gave me samples and sent me on my way. It seems we more quickly hear from the angry, dissatisfied customers; whether it's a restaurant, doctor's office, etc. I see Dr Zelaya on a regular basis and am very pleased with my medical treatment-and that's what matters to me. I've come to expect some waiting and can understand how people feel. There is always a wait, many times a long wait, in most doctors office. I have to wait 2.5 hours, sometimes more at my primary care doctor. I just don't believe in knocking someone just because I'm mad at them. I like Dr Zelaya and will continue to go to his office. If you feel like getting ripped off and treated poorly than this is the Dr. for you. Dr. Zelaya saw my son for 2 minutes and charged my insurance $200. He had made me wait for so long in the waiting room we could not stay as we had to leave to get my other child at school. I had scheduled enough time and spoken with his staff about this before. Than when I called and about removing the co-pay he said that I did not ask in the right way so he would not do that. I told him he was un-ethical to charge me for doing nothing and he told me that I don't understand how valuable his time is. Yet he told me that I should allow 1 & 1/2 hours to wait to see him when I schedule an appt. I said that my time is valuable too and he should not charge a co-pay when he did not do anything. He made an entire waiting room wait for an hour because he told me that he took a longer lunch than usual and the office had been closed for an hour already for lunch. I had checked every 5 minutes during my wait to make sure I would be out in the time that I had been promised than the Dr. told me it was my fault even though he saw me 50 minutes after the scheduled appt. When I showed up at 2:00 there was one person in front of me. The room was empty. I was not seen until 2:57. He is rude and dismissive. read more
