So it was with excitement that i spotted a newly opened cafe at the top of Town Street, Horsforth, the other day and earmarked it for Friday. The windows show that it is "Honest, Ethical and Local". three of my favourite things... as well as cake and dogs. NEVER have I been greeted in such a friendly, lovely way as when I walked into The Courtyard Cafe today. Big grins and hand shakes from David and Mark who were helping serve customers today. You see, the premise of this cafe is not only to serve top nosh (my houmous and roast veg panini (The King George) was lush and my dad's bacon, brie and cranberry (the Broadway) "the best he had ever tasted" (and clearly not at all like the ringroad that its name alludes to :) ), carrot cake pretty good, but I am awesome at making C-cake and so can be very critical!) but to provide a place for people with learning difficulties to work, learn new skills and be part of the community. The cafe is open and airy with plenty of room for wheelchairs. A fantastic addition to Town Street. Their only problem may come in the form of lack of parking near them and not enough tables and chairs! Although the sofas were lovely to lounge in, they could use the space a little better if they have more tables. oo and did i mention that they actually have computers to use. Real computers! I haven't seen real computers in a cafe for ages! bravo! Not sure about WiFi though as i forgot to bring my phone to check! We shall be back...if only for a big grin from David and Mark! :)

The fact that they offer free internet lured me in first and after my first time i became a regular because it is a nice relaxed place to sit and eat and use the net. The food is very yummy - its the normal basic foods like tuna sandwiches, jacket taties, etc but it is lovely and the price is very good. While the cafe isnt that big it is lovely inside and clean and tidy always. The staff are lovely and treat you like family as they come to know you. I love this family run cafe which feels like a second home.

It was a surprisingly filling sandwich. I couldn't finish it from feeling so full. My skinny mocha was good. I don't know that I can judge much other than to say it was a good coffee drink. Staff is friendly. Plenty of seating including open tables. I wish I had tried a baked good cuz they looked amazing, but just didn't have the room.

The downstairs is an open sofa area with a board displaying the various luxury milkshakes on offer that day. Whilst they all looked very appetising, I was really in the mood for a decent cuppa so headed up the metal stairway to the kitchen to order. I was then greeted by the smell of cakes and pastries which had literally just come out of the oven. In the end I opted for a tea and a muffin which came to a very reasonable £2.60. The lady behind the bar brought my order over to me, a very nice touch I thought which meant I was able to sit and browse the art for sale on the wall. When my tea came, it also came with a little biscuit on the side, again, not much but a nice touch which shows that this shop really cares about service. Overall, the shop has a really "artsy" yet cosy feel about it. It's the kind of place which I could see myself sitting for hours writing or catching up with pals I haven't seen in a while. The quiet and relaxing atmosphere is further enhanced by the scents wafting over from the scented candle shop a few doors down. This place is a real find and I encourage others in Leek to give it a go too.

With remarks like that from the indifferent lady owner i did indeed ask myself why I was complaining. The service was shocking the attitude of the owner was disgraceful and to top it off my daughter advised me that her pasta dish was cold but that she didn't like to add any more stuff to the complant list!! Steer clear my friends it was appaling. There scores on the doors is 2 stars but of course this is not measured against service only hygiene which isn't very good but if service was included in the ratings they would have got -5.
