Went here with my girlfriend spontaneously and I don't regret that decision. We were seated immediately in the bustling restaurant, the service was friendly and quick. After some debating, we ordered their Weekend Special of Nasi Bungkus (rice, meats, and jack fruit wrapped in banana leaf) and a plate of Corned Fried Rice (corned beef fried rice). Both dishes were $8 each before tax. The Nasi Bungkus came out very quickly. The marinated chicken leg inside was juicy and sweet. The bits of beef and tofu were hearty. I thought the steamed jack fruit was unique, but it was there more for textural filler than it was for flavor. I really enjoyed the Corned Fried Rice! It was like regular fried rice but with bits of corned beef in it. It was savory and salty and came out super hot! The slices of tomato and cucumber complimented the dish very well. What really sealed the deal on this place were the pickled peppers they have on the side. They were crunchy, sweet, and sour and went well with EVERYTHING I ate! LOVED IT! My girlfriend and I paid $20 after tax and tip. My biggest gripe is that you can't use a credit card unless you spend at least $20 before tax and tip. Weak. This place is MUCH closer than Simpang Asia so I know where to go if I want decently priced Indonesian food in good portions! read more

Java Spice - Corned Fried Rice. Great! - Indonesian Near Me - Rowland Heights, California

Favorite Indonesian restaurant. It's very low key but the food is delicious! Love their Sunday special! The Nasi Bungkus! - It's rice wrapped in banana leaf, with egg, beef, chicken, tofu, and addictive spicy green chili. Soto betawi (coconut soup) is so yummy, don't forget to add the red chili for a nice kick ;) The Shomai Bandung - potato, tofu, cabbage, in the most delightful peanut sauce. They also have the sweetest freshest coconut juice! Perfect to wash down all the food. read more

Love this place. I've been going to Java Spice for ages. Never disappoints! One of my all time favorite places to go to. The owner Gary is super nice and always gives me the extra chilli sauce i request for. My best recommendation there is the chicken, falls off the bone, same consistent flavor every time! My other 2 favorites will be the combination fried rice and combination fried noodle. If you haven't tried this spot yet make sure you give it a try. You will walk out with a smile! read more

Whenever my parents come to visit, they like to go to Indonesian restaurants since there aren't that many where they live. Their friends told them about this place and they liked it, so we decided to go back. The food is good in my opinion. I ordered the fried rice special, which comes with fried rice, two skewers of beef satay and fried egg. It was seasoned just right. I enjoyed it and will come here again when my parents come to visit. read more

My family and I have been ordering from this restaurant for years and it's always delivered. I've introduced my friends to Java Spice, and they love the food. Typically, I get their rice dishes. Their Nasi Goreng is just so damn good. Today, I tried out their Nasi Goreng Kambing, which is their fried rice with lamb meat. Oh man--so good! Service is always relaxed and friendly, too. I'll continue to order and recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. read more

I really think Indo and Malay food is different in spices and preparation, even though there are quite alot of similar name dishes. I just fall to the spicy restaurants and thought Java Spice will just blow me off my seat. Forgot exactly what was ordered, but i know we did order the special chicken (don't take the full chicken, too much!) and was not happy about it. It was stewed, and then baked? It tasted like chicken was roasted and then soup poured over it. Whatever it is, it tasted good enough for my baby's developing teeth but it is just too soft and wet for me. The satay is good. Of course Malay satay seems spicier. Java spice is more sweet than anything when it comes to the sauces. The friend noodle and rice was just that. Fried noodle and rice. Throw shallots, egg, and green onion and you can do that at home. The accompanying chili sauce was spicy-sweet...more sweet than spicy. Overall the food here taste home cooked. So if u like that, it should be ok. But i don't think the price justifies the product. Service is bad. Server is so arrogant. Takes orders like i am a person eating for free. Oh, but then again, it is Indonesian, which is part of asian, and we all know Asian service in general do not get high marks. It is something we all learn to expect when travelling to asian restaurants. Almost $50 for 5 dishes & a drink. Asian price?? Me thinks not! read more

We drove all the way from the Bay Area to LA and this indo restaurant is very delicious. Definitely will be coming back here for this trip and other trips to LA. The food was amazing and service was great. Just feel like I'm back home with all the deliciousness. read more

All the stars are for the food and the kitchen staffs. Don't get me wrong, the food there are excellent, but the cashier lady(the older one) is just plain mean. After paying my to go order worth almost $80, she made a big fuzz about me asking one chili sauce, she even told/yelled at the younger lady that they are not suppose to give the chili sauce for to go order under any circumstances. Mind you, it the the smallest to go sauce container size and I asked for ONE. I do not mind paying like 50cents if i have to, but giving me that kind of attitude is just plain bad. Especially after she begged me to purchase the last snack that they have. That lady is just bad for any business. read more

It's decently price and the food is good. But the service is poor and not very clean for a small place.

Mmm! First time trying Indonesian food here @ Java Spice. Thank you for making it a good experience! Everything we got was great. My personal favorite was the corned fried rice (not pictured). They also have this thing wrapped in bamboo leaf on the weekends that was really flavorful and spicy! Service here was very friendly. Will be back :) read more

Haven't been at this place for awhile, but, after my last visit here this past weekend it may take a little while longer before coming back here. Nasi bungkus for $12 ....its a joke considering what's in it; a piece of rendang meat, an egg, a small piece of tofu and a minute piece of sayur nangka with a ton of rice....... this is a plain and simple rip off. read more

Our first time at an Indonesian restaurant. We weren't sure what to order so we ordered the chicken & pork satay (our favorite), the chicken and rice dish w/ coconut soup and the Kway Teaw Siram. For dessert we took home jelly coconut with brown sugar inside. It was all delicious. My kids and I finished everything. It's a small family owned shop and they were all very nice and helpful. The price isn't that bad either everything runs around $10 a dish unless you get seafood. We would definitely come back. read more

so i mean.. maybe i'm just not crazy about indonesian food.. but here's my schpeal i got satay chicken with these rice pattie things that were previously wrapped in banana leaves.. the rice patties had no taste... unless you dipped it in the peanut sauce the chicken was not bad .. i really liked the peanut dipping sauce!!.. kind of pricey. for the small portions you get.. SERVICE? must of not been great because it was very FORGETTABLE they also sell indonesian snacks there for purchase..but yeah.. just an okay place to eat.. ate there w/ my indonesian friend.. he really liked this one soup.. i thought it tasted.. kind of odd.. but he said it tasted just like his moms!!! (can't go wrong there).. he also agreed that the food was over priced.. still on the look out for a better indonesian restaurant!! read more

For Indonesian food, this is the place. My parents always take me to this place when I'm in town. On weekends, they have nasi bungkus, which is a combo rice dish wrapped in banana leaf. Has some pretty spicy green chili with it! Wash it down with an Es Doger, which is a sweet drink with condensed milk, syrup, and fermented cassava (yes, it's yums). Disregard the previous hater reviews. You go to an authentic Indo restaurant, you have to have the right expectations. Embrace different customs. read more

Java Spice - Es Duger. The coconut milk helps with the spicy food. - Indonesian Near Me - Rowland Heights, California

I've been here on a few occasions and the food is not bad. I recommend their fried rices, but nothing really outside of that. The noodle dishes here are subpar, and just taste like they throw a bunch of seasonings on it, but none of them really stick or infuse together. I've also tried the soup here, specifically the lamb curry and the flavor is just okay. It didn't have the thick consistency that I'd expect from a curry broth, but perhaps their style of soup isn't supposed to be like that. I also found a small fly/gnat in my soup as well. Not a huge deterrent for myself, but might be for some other diners. Anyways, from the rices, I personally recommend the lamb and the pork belly. The flavor is very yummy. I like to add their house hot sauce and pickled jalapeño peppers to it as well. read more

The waitress is rude and not friendly enough, the food is just fine. They need to learn

Not authentic Indonesian food. I will find another Indonesian Restaurant in LA and too pricey

I love Indonesian/Malaysian cuisine. We came with lower expectation. Parking was a bit hard. The place is not big. It looks like a family business (mom & pop). Service was ok & pretty quick, as most places like this you dont expect great service but good food. We ordered Nasi Bungkus & Kangkung Hotplate, which were recommended by the older lady who worked in the kitchen. The Nasi Bungkus (steamed rice with vegetable curry, some protein, chilli sauce, all wrapped in banana leaf) was authentic and has great flavour, it's delicious !! .. but only avail Sat/Sun. The Kangkung (On choy) served on hotplate was tasty and very fresh. We truly enjoyed it. They also have Indonesian cakes & snacks near the cashier counter, but we didnt try them. Saw the table next to us having fried fish with some sauce & chicken served with chilli sauce. Will be back try them next time ! read more

First time here. Very dissppointed. The fried rice taste ok though a bit overpriced. But,.....the Satay was the worst. I hv had thai satay, indonesian satsy, Malaysian sstay etc, never had deep fried satay before!! To me, this is cheating, its like using microwave tk cook. For the oruce theg charged.. its a ripped off. Over cooked, dried meat, no taste... DO NOT ORDER SATAY !!!! read more

Love the food here my favorite is the nasi bungkus. Too bad they only make it on Saturday and Sunday's. On weekdays I will settle for a nasi campur. Their fried rices and fried noodles are really flavorful. I would have to say service is not so good here but the food makes up for the service. read more

Java Spice - Weekend special - Indonesian Near Me - Rowland Heights, California

There are some reviews here on yelp about the fried rice at Java Spice how it is dry. First of all Indonesian fried rice is essentially rice that is fried and we use a type of rice that's drier. That is the typical authentic fried rice. If I go to an Indonesian restaurant with fried rice cooked with sushi type of rice which is common with Korean fried rice dish I would never have gone back. I'm not saying that Korean fried rice isn't good, but different. You seek food adventure, you found one but you try to change the taste because it just doesn't agree with your closed minded taste buds? Of course not! You embrace different flavors. If not you can't travel without relying on eating at McDonald's around the world. If that is who you are then sans food adventure or at least leaving bad reviews. Okay, end rant. That said, the fried rice in Java spice really reminded me when I was growing up in the old country. In Jakarta there are street fried rice/noodle food vendors that goes around neighbourhoods at night time. Well, Java spice thank you for reminding me of that childhood taste. I have to say I don't put stock in the rest of the offered dishes. I come to Java spice only for their fried rice. read more

I'm being generous giving it 3*. I ordered a Nasi Bungkus to go today, priced at $10.50. Nasi Bungkus is one of favorites and I had it many other restaurants; Java Spice does it badly. They give a lot of rice, a small piece of chicken thigh, a small piece of tofu, a small piece of beef Rendang, small piece of jackfruit I think, some raw cabbage. For one, protein pieces should be larger, they should have cooked/curried vegetables and not raw cabbage. Flavor wise is only okay. I'm not getting it again. Follow-up: Chicken--a little too sweet Beef-not good flavor read more

Excellent foods & service, best pempek as owner from pempek city/ Palembang. They also have incredible ayam kalasan

I changed my mind about this place. I have been to this place twice after I wrote the last review and ya know ... things changed!! A good change!! Pros: quick service, clean restaurant, plenty of seating, a great variety of food on menu, cheap. Cons: server friendliness depends on what time of the day you eat at the restaurant (it gets busy at nights, mostly Friday & weekend nights), food is so-so, mostly bland. So our thoughts on the food? The following is what we ordered: We had the chicken fried rice, and found it tasteless and overly greasy. We also had the nasi bungkus (mixed rice wrapped in banana leaf), and though there was a lot of food in it, the fried chicken lacked seasoning, and the beef was hard. Also be warned that if you don't like spicy, this combo rice is kind of spicy, which was fine by me, but avoid the green chili within if you don't like it hot. The soto ayam (chicken soup) was also the blandest soto ayam that I have ever had, which was very disappointing. The ketoprak (a salad of sliced cabbage, thin noodles, tofu, sprouts & chips doused in peanut sauce) was OK. The peanut sauce is what makes the dish, and unfortunately we've just had better peanut sauce elsewhere. The two dishes we were happy with were the cah kangkung, a rather tasty plate of sauteed water spinach with tomatoes, garlic and quail eggs, and the mie ayam bakso, a delicious bowl of egg noodles with ground chicken and scallions accompanied by a side of beef meatballs in a beef or chicken broth. You just pour the meatballs into the noodle bowl and eat it like a soup. This was good. The other good thing was the variety of drinks available on the menu, i.e. Indonesian shaved ice and coconut water with sliced coconut. I could just come in for the refreshing drinks alone. Indonesian cuisine is BIG on flavor, pleasing your palette with a mix of sweet, salty, bitter and spicy. If you want to experience Indonesian cuisine done right, try Merry's House of Chicken at the corner of Amar & Nogales. Java Spice is a hit or miss. read more

tip: check in to get free boxed drink BBQ chicken with homemade sauce was ok, had some harden dry parts, noodle salad with dried calamari strips peanut sauce was weird in a bad way, fried noodle was very regular, nothing that really screams this is Indonesian cuisine at its finest. read more

I never had Indonesian food before. I am not sure if I should have tried it here. The beef dish with the soup did not taste very good especially the beef tasted burnt. Soup was ok. My friends ordered other food that even the fish and chicken tasted dry. I was not impressed with this place when they need to make some improvements on how they cook and prepare the food. Don't burn the food that makes it taste even worse. read more

Made the worst decision ever to order spicy for the stir fried noodles. It was burning spicy. I could seriously feel the spice burning a hole in my stomach. And it doesn't help if that's the first meal you have for the day. Underneath all that heat though is some great soy sauce flavor. I can imagine the dish to be a billion times better without the spicy. The other thing we got was the rice wrapped in banana leaf. It was also spicy! But umm, more edible. It comes with some really tender and falls right off the bone meat. Mix everything up and it's sorta like a fried rice I guess. The flavor was alright but doesn't appeal to me much. This place is in the nook of all the good restaurants. After passing by it so many times, my friend Corey raved about this Indonesian place and took me there to try it. Located in the Yes Plaza, I was more excited to get Tastea afterwards, but to my surprise I ended up going to a scrumptious lunch. I had the Corned beef Fried Rice. It was so good, I scarfed it down in like 2 minutes. The corned beef was into little bits so you don't get a surge of saltiness at once. It was saltiness was spread out evenly throughout. I ended up paying about $10 for the dish with tax and tip. And it was definitely a fill-your-stomach kind of meal. Wash it down with some Tastea afterwards and you are a happy camper. read more

Java Spice - Indonesian Near Me - Rowland Heights, California

Conveniently located near a lot of other shops and dessert places, Java Spice was pretty much empty when we got there at around 8pm. Checked into Yelp and got a free Teh Botol, a juice box of jasmine tea which was very refreshing. We ordered chicken satay, combination fried rice, otak otak (fish cakes), and es cendol. Chicken satay was a little dry, but still tasty with the peanut sauce. Combination fried was also a little dry and not as flavorful as we'd like, but we asked for some special chili sauce which made it taste much better. Otak otak is definitely unique, fish paste mixed with coconut milk (according to the Indonesian BF) and then cooked and served with peanut sauce. A more authentic dish that wasn't my personal favorite, but still tasted alright. Es cendol is a drink with coconut milk, ice, and some green jelly. Very refreshing and not overly sweet. There are a lot of interesting items on the menu, but the ones we had were not prepared as well as I hoped. Workers were friendly and food came out fast though. Will be back when the Indo food cravings hit again. read more

Came here first time 4 years ago and I am Indonesian and I know how good food is. Food is just okay but service was fine last time. But came here again today. And nothing change. Food is just so so. With the same price , you get bigger portion & better taste at Medan Kitchen. But the problem is the service. They missed my son noddle and I have to ask then they make in hurry but not even say sorry and not even trying to pass to us ASAP when it is ready. Like they take their own time. Then the cashier is not very friendly like has the arrogant look. When I ask for bill , she is like showing does not care look .. like I am not a customer. Also, the place is so hot!! I think they just don't turn on the AC. With the Same food , and price - Medan Kitchen and Borneo are so much better and better service too!! So much better. read more

I'm pretty picky about Indo food (spent my first 16 years of life there) and my mom cooks Indo food at home, so I haven't been to this place as often as my other friends. But when I do, I always order their chicken fried rice, which always came out great, except the last visit (about a month ago) where it just tastes different. Not bad, just different... but it's not quite the taste I was looking for. I always got the Indo street-style nasi goreng before but this last one tastes more like a hotel fried rice, which doesnt taste bad.. but doesn't have that authentic taste either. (Everyone knows street-style fried rice tastes better than the hotel-cooked ones) I don't know what happened.. probably they hired a new cook or something.. but I probably won't get it anymore. On the other hand, empek-empek was nice. The skin was crispy, I could taste the fish, and the vinegar sauce was awesome. I'd be ordering that next time. :) Oh & bring cash if you're planning to split the check.. I believe there's a minimum requirement for card transaction. read more
