My first time to the Java Man. A nice quaint place near the beach. It's old, rustic and for sure not a Starbucks, which I love. lol It has older, well used furniture, ample space to sit and relax or work. Just don't expect it to be too quiet for work. The workers tend get excited when new customers walk in. They like to greet them and let every one know they're here. (Not really a bad thing, just something to be aware of if you're looking for some quiet read/work time) I had the Chai Latte, which was nice. Could use a little more spice to my liking, but that's my opinion. I hear they have fantastic breakfast burritos. I'll be back for one of those mammoths!! P.S. After dinner last night, me and my friend stopped by Java Man to get some hot cocoa and just chat. The guy behind the counter recommended the cupcakes so we had a chocolate cupcake with a little candy chick on top. It was really good - moist and light. The atmosphere was really chill and laid back. They have a water dispenser so you can help yourself to water. The bathroom is tiny. And I mean tiny. I was scared I was going to kiss the door as I squatted to pee. That would be my only complaint. read more

Ahhhhh, what can I say... JAVAMAN is awesome. Not only is it near the beach in a laid back beach community, but it has free wireless internet. AND a laid back casual atmosphere of couch, comfy chairs, tables... easygoing clientele (there are regulars, me not included, although i do love it there) and pleasant workers... local artwork decorates and rotates every so often, the owners also own Ocean Diner a few blocks north (YUM) ..... the desserts at JAVAMAN are kick*ss, they have german chocolate cake, pecan, lemon bar, all the usual i suppose, but NOT USUAL - they are YU-MMMMY. and they give you HUGE slices. This place isn't bad. I usually really dig little independent coffee bars, and this place is no exception. Though, it could totally be better, but it's not bad at all. Keep in mind that a lot of locals come to this converted 1920's home to study. Take it for what it's worth, I came here to study and I loved how many tables there were, how quiet the customers were, and the amount of outlets to plug in. This is definitely the place to check out if you are sick of school libraries and just cant study at home. Oh and did I mention, FREE WI-FI? Not shabby! =D A review before mine talked about how the baristas were a bit noisy. And, well, this is very true. The guy's voice is really annoying, and can totally get loud enough to cut through your thoughts. But this isn't much of a deal, I mean, common, you're out in public to study and work! The food is pretty decent....might be worth writing home about, but not something to go gaga over. My buddy got the double layered lemon bar and it was fantastic. So the pastries definitely pass. I ended up with a Turkey Sandwich, and it was pretty much ordinary--BIG, but something I've concocted at my place with good Deli meat. Nice place! I'm a tea drinker so I really appreciated their selection of loose teas. It was New Years Day when I went and my brain cycles were running more slowly than usual. It took me like 10 minutes to study my choices and make a selection. The guys behind the counter were extremely patient and slightly amused. The sad part was I couldn't blame my foggy head on excessive NYE partying - I went to bed early! Finally I decided on a basic Irish Breakfast tea for my early afternoon caffeine boost. I hung out a bit while my tea brewed and watched the people (and their dogs) come and go. Java Man seemed like a great neighborhood hang-out place - very mellow vibe - and the barista guys kept up a stream of fun, joking conversation with the customers. Not as good as I hoped it would be- it was this or Starbucks for my morning coffee by the beach, and one of the rare times I wish I chose Starbucks over an independent coffee house. I love the local vibe of Java Man but the baked good are better than the actual coffee. They guys who work here are great but they know food more than a latte. While nobody has AC in Hermosa (hot on hot days) I don't understand leaving the door open on cold days and keeping it as warm as an ice box? If Java Man had any coffee house competition in hermosa they would be in real trouble. Hope they can make a few simple improvements. read more

Love love love. I used to sit here for hours and read when I was on break from college visiting my family. I still come here every time I visit. Their muffins and other baked goods come from OceanDiner the sister shop, and large and delicious. They even have fat free and sugar free options. The iced chai latte was bland. The Mexican coffee had large chunks of cinnamon....threw away after 3 drinks. When we asked questions about the menu, we were treated as a nuisance. Java Man, the 2008 winner of the Best of the Best coffeehouse in Hermosa Beach is a small shop that was converted from a home built in the 1920s. It is only one of a few independently owned coffeehouses in Hermosa Beach, CA. It has a quaint atmosphere that is rare to find in today's world. There is hardly any remodeling done to the interior of the eatery, keeping its charm. Traditional café tables & chairs are available with a few couches scattered through the dining area. The room is full of windows letting the beach sun in. The color scheme is bright, to reflect the sun. The aura was vibrant and quick paced. No music was playing so the employees' banter could be heard clearly. The walls are decorated with paintings from local artists. The coffeehouse is dog friendly with a jar of dog biscuits prominently displayed next to the condiment station, which was kept clean and stocked. There were no paper copies of the menu but oddly enough there were menus of the Ocean Diner. There were also a few tables available outside the coffeehouse complete with umbrellas. The menu offers breakfast with major emphasis on varieties of breakfast burritos, lunch sandwiches, and many baked goods and desserts which are made from scratch at another Hermosa eatery, the Ocean Diner. Rare bottled sodas are available as well. The coffee menu consists of freshly brewed coffee, lattes, and teas. The staff chatted among themselves for a bit while customers waited in line. Upon noticing them, they proceeded to take the orders. They instructed the patrons to have a seat while the order was being prepared. They would call the patrons' orders out for them to pick up. The orders would not be brought to the tables. The mocha latte ($3.00) was ready shortly after ordering. The turkey pesto sandwich ($6.00) was ready a few minutes later. The latte was warm and the espresso overpowered the chocolate taste. The milk was not rich, as accustomed to, but rather light. The sandwich was accompanied by a bag of chips and an apple. The sandwich bread was nothing worth noting. The pesto sauce was barely noticeable and the turkey meat was rather dry. Clearly the meal in itself was just average. The staff continued to chat loudly as patrons were dining and new patrons entered the establishment. This could become distracting, especially for patrons studying, working, or doing homework. Java Man is a good place to stop by for a caffeine boost during a stroll on Pier Avenue. It's also great for sitting outside and people watching with a few friends, or with your dog. However it is not recommended for those who prefer a quiet atmosphere in order to get work done. The desserts and baked goods are worth checking out as they are made from scratch. As with a majority of eateries in Hermosa Beach, Java Man does not have a parking lot so bring extra coins and allow extra time after 5pm. Many free one hour parking spaces are available during the day and early afternoons. read more

I really like to break up the Starbucks routine and go for a different kind of coffee every now and then. Java Man is one of my go to places. I love the neighborhood atmosphere where everyone knows everyone. There is nice seating outside and a pretty nice area inside that you don't expect at first glance. The chocolate macadamia flavor of the day coffee is interesting, but good. You can really taste the macadamia. I also like their almond milk mocha. It tastes a little more syrupy than the Starbucks mocha. The veggie sandwich is really good with lettuce, cream cheese, tomato, cucumber, sprouts, avocado, and cheese. I like to get a 1/2 with a cup of soup, especially when it is split pea. They also have wifi but you have to ask for the password and it's polite to buy more than just a coffee when asking for the wifi. read more

This is one of the cute house-converted-into-a-coffee-shop places by Pier Avenue at Hermosa Beach. It's charming, with cozy wooden interiors, and wooden desks. You order at the counter by the front door. A side door overlooks Pier Avenue. I've come here for simple things--coffee and/or mocha--and to work on stuff on my laptop, or just sketch. It's nice just to have a mom-and-pop coffee house, essentially something other than Starbucks. I come here mostly for the coffee-shop-by-the-beach atmosphere. Starbucks is so loud. So stiff. So green. This place is more relaxed. It's a type of place artists come to write poetry. Or, students come to do homework. Or, lonely women come to read their novels. Business people go to Starbucks. With all the chain coffee joints setting up dominion all over the city, it's nice to see a few mom and pop shops around. Java Man is my spot for coffee in Hermosa. It sure beats all the other shops in the area in flavor of coffee and intimacy with service. I usually get my triple espresso con panna and it's perfect every time. The ice coffee is standard, but it packs a bit of a punch, so be careful if you're prone to jitters, you most likely will get it. They have basic food items, but I just stick to the coffee brews. I'm not a hot coffee drinker, so I can't fairly rate them on that. The inside is pretty small, but it has some tables for customers to sitdown, enjoy their cup of coffee, read a book, surf the web, etc.. read more

Its one of the few independent coffee shops in the area. Its tiny, but I like it that way. Free wifi, coffee is not badly priced, and its a stone throw from the pier. (and pizza!!) The bathroom is TINY, and gets stinky fast, which is a no no for a coffee shop. No annoying music, live music that gets in the way of your book, just a relaxing place to have a cup of joe. And of course, parking in hermosa always sucks after dark or anytime, so keep those quarters ready, or do what I do and ride your bike over. read more

Great space for studying! They have a bunch of random tables and chairs and couches inside the cafe and also seats outside the cafe as well. My friend and I studied here for over 4 hours today. They have great lattes, iced tea and breakfast burritos and really friendly service. Free wifi as well! They also have signs indoors asking people on cell phones to keep it down and have their conversations outside, so again, great for studying. read more

Their Wi-Fi is not the absolute best; I have had problems connecting, and they don't have the best lighting to study. It is in a great location. My main issue was that they close too early. i come here a lot b/c it's close to home and i can walk here. the guys who work here are super friendly, fast, and make some damn good coffee. free wifi! they don't care if you sit for hours. there is some great seating, though it can get kinda hot/sweaty in there. they usually put out industrial floor fans to help the air move through. the breakfast burritos are killer. coffee is fresh and delicious. baked goods are incredible - the muffins are as larger than my fist. that's a lot of muffin. the only two complaints i have, if i have to make any, is that 1) it's pricier than most cafes, and 2) not many electrical outlets. you'll need to come fully charged. parking is a huge pain in the ass b/c it's mostly metered spots all along pier ave. it's expensive too. but if you come before dec 15, most meters are free between 11a-2pm. there are 4 outdoor tables and you can bring your pupster. read more

I live a few blocks away and walk here in the mornings. I really like this place because it feels like you're in someone's small living room, it has no chain vibes at all. The guys that work there are great, they're funny, remember regulars and make great coffee. There's seating outside and inside they feature art by local artists and switch it around often. The only food I've tried here are the breakfast burritos, small but good and satisfying. They have a nice pastry selection for those with a sweet tooth.
