Certainly not a place I would recommend for breakfast bites. Burrito was unseasoned basic eggs and potatoes. Beignets were hollow and flavorless. Saving grace was the coffee hit the spot. Service was relatively quick but rude. I'll look elsewhere going forward. read more

My family and I visited Portland and stayed at the heart of downtown, near Pioneer Square. My parents each ordered an English muffin and tea, while my husband ordered a bagel. I am on a dairy-free diet and wanted to order their Breakfast Wrap, but unfortunately there was cream and butter in the recipe and could not be omitted. Nonetheless, one of the employees was able to make one of their bagel sandwiches to be completely dairy-free upon my request, and I was glad that I could at least get that option. I also ordered their London Fog latte with oatmilk; I give it a 4/5. On my 2nd visit, my husband and I ordered their signature Java Latte with oatmilk. I was in love, and though my husband is not into coffee, he actually finished his drink and said he liked it. I give this drink a 5/5. Unfortunately, the city currently has a problem with its mentally ill and homeless. There were several that were hanging out right in front of Java Man; one of them actually stood right across the glass from where I was sitting to stare at me and harass me. Thankfully, he gave up and disappeared the longer we waited for him to leave. Despite that, there were a lot of people, tourists and locals alike, that visited this cafe when we were there. I hope they stay in business at that location, unlike some of the other shuttered businesses around the city that couldn't make it through the pandemic. read more

Visiting from upstate NY for my partners business trip. Stayed down the way at the benson, and this was our go to coffee for the the three weeks we were there. First bad review I have ever written. The mocha tastes like powdered milk and chalky chocolate. Then when I returned I received a medium roast coffee that tasted like black water. I think at some point the owner had a dream of bringing great coffee to their customers but today that dream was not realized. I am on vacation, a time where everything tastes great but this coffee was disappointing. The atmosphere inside was cool and different but the owners and workers need to care more about the product they serve. In addition might want to hide the Costco tray of croissants in the back. read more

I originally thought this place was one of those hotel cafes since it is right next to one (and those are pretty hit or miss), but it is independent! The coffee and beignets are awesome, but it's really the plants that blew me away! There's an incredible variety of options and the prices are incredibly fair even for the rare plants. I'm pretty sure one of the owners grows the plants herself, she mentioned being hesitant to sell her pink princess pothos because she loved them so much which I completely understand. I got a white princess pothos and a pineapple plant which unfortunately lost its little pineapple on the drive home (my fault). The plants even came with the pots!! read more

This establishment feels like a chain (perhaps it is, I'm visiting town). The staff are friendly. The coffee has a burnt taste, which seems to be typical of what I have found in the Pac NW. I prefer an Italian, Columbian, Argentinian, or Houston roasting technique which are all smoother and have more nuanced flavor. Coffee volumes are large -- they served me a cappuccino that was 12 oz. Asked for an 8 oz on my second visit, which the barista was happy to provide (although that option isn't stated on the menu board.) The food is nothing to write home about. I had the equivalent of an egg McMuffin that was over buttered and a bit greasy. The pastries and lunch sandwiches might be better, but I have not tried them. read more

I have a weird thing where coffee all pretty much tastes the same to me, so I don't really feel too qualified to comment on the coffee itself. To me I care more about the comfort and the vibe. I work on my laptop and like to get out of the apartment a few times a week, and Java Man Coffee is probably the most comfortable coffee shop I've ever been to for that. I mean, it's really crazy how nice it is there. They've got such a variety of places to sit. Couches, armchairs, ledges, different sized and shaped tables. Lots of chargers. Great wifi. Pretty awesome. It usually isn't too crowded there either. And the employees are super nice. This one guy saw that had take-out in my hand and took the initiative to tell me I could totally eat it in their coffee shop if I want. We ended up having a nice conversation about Stretch The Noodle over on 2nd and Washington. He was also telling me how other businesses like McDonalds often try to make the seating not-that-comfortable so that customers don't linger too long, but they made it a point to make it comfortable at Java Man. One complaint I have is that the close at 5pm. They're not alone with those types of hours of course though. They do have a table outside that I move over to once they close though. The wifi reaches it, so the 5pm closing time isn't that bad. read more

Alright so this cute little shop downtown Portland you'll love it! Okay let start with the service! It's family owned and they work everyday to make coffee and wonderful sweet treats! I used to work around the corner from then so I have gotten to know them very well. The mom is so pleasant so happy and she loves what she does! You can tell! The young man that is their most of the time as well is the same way! Super up beat and all about work. The first time I discovered them about 3 years ago. I've been hooked ever since! They have this Fantastic Green Tea Latte! When I say its fabulous I mean it! It has such great flavors and just something different you know. I have been looking for the perfect beignet since visiting New Orleans. While visiting Portland, I walked past a sign touting fresh beignets so I decided to give them a try. The lady taking my order was so pleasant and warm and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing within the cafe. She was exciting about their beignets. When they came out in white bags just like Cafe Du Monde, but without the Cafe Du Monde stamp, of course, I was transported back to New Orleans! I couldn't even wait to get back to the hotel before opening the bag and taking a bite! In a blind taste test, I would not have known the difference between the two. The plants caught my eye, however the friendly staff are what kept me going back, not to mention the amazing coffee and wonderful food. I always felt like the staff was happy to see me. I ordered a Breakfast Sandwich on a Biscuit with Bacon, egg & cheese. The guy working at the register said the biscuit was house made. Unfortunately for me, I took it to go. By the time I opened it I saw it wasn't a biscuit. It was just a plain small bread roll. It was very flavorless and the bacon was soggy - not thick at all and very thin - of cheap quality. I was a little uupset. I love biscuits and I believe they should've told me that they were out of biscuits,. Then I would' have ordered the English muffin.
