Glad I made a stop here. I came here as a quick breakfast joint and asked the worker for suggestions on my drink. As there is a blackboard with many options available in both hot and iced. 3 different sizes as well After chatting he suggested the Great Dane and it was indeed great The food was yummy as well I got. Stopped by this lovely little café on the drive through Salem and cannot recommend it enough. Wonderful ambiance and an incredibly friendly staff whose banter made me feel like I was in an episode of Gilmore Girls. The baked goods really are homemade - they're delicious and affordable and I recommend grabbing a bag of them for the drive home. Great coffee too! read more

whenever we pass through Salem, my husband stops here. I'm not sure how he found it as it's not really in the downtown--like maybe a mile outside of the downtown. I wasn't sure what to expect when he pulled into the parking lot. First, 99% of the people there are locals--some older, maybe retired folks, and others just on their lunch break. The owners/servers are super nice and will let you stare at the menu, ask if you need anything, let you change your mind, then help you figure out what you want (because you are a parent and your mind is not on food, but trying to figure out what your kid will actually eat). No one will bother your slightly tired child who just wants to drive his car on the table (or the floor). Definitely, a relaxed, accommodating place. As for food, there's sandwiches (wraps, grilled cheese...vegetarians welcome). Large selection of coffee drinks (frozen and hot), as well as chai. There's bagels and other pastry items. There's also a small locals craft section--handmade bags, pottery, etc. And, of course, a bathroom (clean!). very nice. go and support the local businesses. read more

Was sitting in line at the inspection station across the street and saw the store. I've never been in there before so I thought I would give it a try. They make all kinds specialty coffees and sandwiches. I had a great caramel latte and a sausage breakfast burrito. This place is a little out-of-the-way but it is worth the trip. Lacking and it is great to see. I ordered the breakfast burrito with potatoes in the side and OMMG they were so good. Loaded burrito and a side of these buttery, rose mAry seasoned potato's that hIt the spot! A complimentary fruit cup in the side was the perrfect finsjhsing touCh to a great breakfast. Java Dog is my favorite place in Salem. The employees are very kind and the food is both tasty and inexpensive. I often order a cappuccino and enjoying it outside. Java Dog also has a pretty good selection of vegetarian items. They also sell items from some very talented local artists, which is fun to browse. read more

A unique local find. You can have almost any kind of coffee or tea, and the food is not only great, but inexpensive too. Service is quick and friendly. A cute little place that looks more like a luncheonette than a coffee shop. My cold brew was excellent. I hung around for a couple hours and the staff was so kind to everyone that came in. They also really care about their coffee and it showed. Prices are unbelievable, I wish I came hungry! Only reason it's not 5 stars is because there wasn't anyway wifi. I'm not in Salem often, but if I go back I'd build this place in as part of the trip. read more

I'm so thrilled Java Dog is in Salem! In a town that is not bustling with fresh food options, this place saves the day. Lunch specials always rotate - anything from fresh soups to creative wraps and sandwiches with usually seasonal ingredients. A great value too! If they were located anywhere but Salem, Java Dog could easily charge nearly twice as much for their goodies. But instead you can easily get a sandwich, salad, dessert, and a drink for under 8 bucks. On top of all that the couple that own the place are friendly as could be! I am lucky enough to have a shop (A Moment of Zen) located right across the street from these guys (because on days I am alone all i need to do is give them a call and they bring my order right across the street to me!). Super friendly service and they have something different each day. My favorite is the seafood salad, and its only $4 for a huge sandwich!
