I host succulent trading events in Bakersfield and both events we have held at this park from recommendation from someone in our plant group and this park is perfect! Enough tables and some covered. Big enough and a play ground for people who bring their kids. Today was our second event and really enjoyed the park! We will be back.

Back in the day, Jastro Park was a destination for me. Used to play tennis here every week with a friend of mine. Nowadays, I find myself just driving by the park. Recently, I decided to have lunch here. Brought my takeout, and I found one of their many picnic tables to dine at. It was very peaceful. There was a group of ladies chatting and eating close by. A man was shooting baskets at the basketball court. Folks were walking their dogs. Others were jogging. There is lots to do for whatever you want to do. There are still tennis courts. Nice play area for children. So bring your kids, or your significant other, or your dog, or just yourself. Jastro Park is a cool place to hangout. Well maintained and clean.

Good place to have a conversation and enjoy the sunny days. Caution a few homeless do roam around.

The kids have so much fun every time we go here for the water park or the regular park! And I also love that the corn man is always there

Usually regulars will tie extra poop bags to the fence and bring bottles of water. Because this park is a sump, garbage can sometimes wind up at the bottom of the park, but it's maintained weekly and is usually pretty clean for a dog park. The one thing this place NEEDS desperately is more signage about the rules. Last Sunday, July 11, 2021 we arrived around 8am and found a group of about 20 boys and 4 coaches having football practice. Usually I wouldn't mind this type of thing and welcome the socialization for the dogs, but the kids were not properly talked to about respecting the dog park. One of the boys opened the fence gate and let both of my dogs out, who of course then bolted out into the busy street. I feel that this could have been avoided if there were proper signs about closing the fence and being mindful of the dogs. Especially because this dog park is just the small fenced in area of a larger park, I feel like they could play anywhere and dogs really just have this one spot.

We generally walk the outer edges of the shade in order to avoid the sun and the heat. The park is clean, including the restrooms. The times we have been here there were no encampments of those down on their luck. The outer perimeter of this park is somewhere like 1200 steps if you are counting. With the mature trees present, about 70% of this walking is in the shade if you go in the morning.

Ten years ago, when my youngest brother was still in high school, we would raid the deli department at Vons and have picnics here on the grass under one of the many shade trees. Parking here is a little tricky. You can park along the curb on the West side on Patton (east side is marked no parking) or you can turn West onto Maleta, then North onto Gallio to park in the lot next to the elementary school. There are individual picnic tables spread randomly throughout the park under the trees, some with their own individual barbecue grills. There is also a large covered area shading a number of long picnic tables which were being used for a children's birthday party on the Sunday I was there with a large bouncy house set up nearby for their entertainment. The group picnic shelter, with a capacity of 80 people, can be reserved by contacting the NOR Parks & Recreation District at 392-2020 and filling out an application form. The cost for reserving the picnic shelter is $15 per hour, with a minimum 3 hour reservation. You can access the application at http://norfun.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/FR-100-Use-of-Facility-Online-Packet.pdf There are public restrooms located nearby. There a a number of recreational options available at this park. There is plenty of playground equipment available for kids of all sizes, some with bark below and some with a rubberized safety surface. There is a basketball half court complete with one basket that has a net. There is also an area for playing horseshoes with poles on either end. There is also a huge grassy area suitable for playing soccer (there was a group playing there this Sunday), picnicking, or for just running around. It has something to appeal to everyone in the family! There is even a geocache hidden somewhere within the park. Yes, I've found it, but I'm not giving you any clues, so don't ask. At 12.4 acres, this park can accommodate quite a few weekend picnickers and sports enthusiasts and the same time.

It was only a moderately hot day by Bakersfield standards, 85 according to weatherbug, but still a little hot to be eating outdoors in the sun. Luckily for me, this park has abundance of picnic tables with large shady trees close at hand. I was not the only one enjoying a picnic in the park that day, but the picnic tables (there had to be at least 20 of them) were arranged far enough apart that we all had at least a modicum of privacy. There were also a number of charcoal grilling stations sprinkled throughout the picnic areas - at least 10 of them, and I could smell hamburgers and hot dogs roasting on them. There was a large grassy area where a couple was exercising their large dogs. Yes, they were off the leash but they were having a great time bounding about and didn't bother any of the picnickers. There was a large area with playground equipment for both small and large children which I believe had sand beneath it to guard against injuries from falls. There were also basketball courts and a public restroom. There were a number of families with children out enjoying the relatively moderate weather. There was a covered area with picnic tables and people had set up a number of tent/gazebo like structures to give them shade. It was a surprisingly impromptu and lovely outing in the park. I can't believe I've never stopped here before, but I'm sure I'll be back!
