Incredibly insensitive cold and strange man. Frozen expressions and rigid mannerisms when I came to see him with intense uterine pain. No empathy at all . It was bizarre and traumatizing. Dr. Kanos delivered my first daughter in 2014 and my second daughter in 2019. Both times I got great care, and even though we had moved further from the city I still came back to see him for my second pregnancy because I felt so comfortable with him. He can have a dry sense of humor but I appreciate that and find him warm, funny, and extremely caring. He always makes sure you are completely comfortable, is extremely patient with time and questions, never makes you wait long for your appointments, and above all makes sure you and your baby are 100% looked after with the best medical care. Highly recommend him and the hospital he delivers at, St. Luke's Roosevelt (or now called Mt. Sinai West?). read more

I am a patient of Dr Jason Kanos since 2010. He delivered my 2 children. I am over 40. I don't like discomfort nor pain. I was already a patient of Dr. Eric Ganz since around 2005. I went to Dr. Kanos when I became pregnant with my first baby in 2010. I had heard so many complaints about OB-GYN doctors; they dismiss your symptoms, they aren't at the delivery, and they just make sure the baby is developing okay. So I didn't have many expectations. A few referrals from friends had turned me down because I was over 12 weeks. So in a panic I called Dr. Ganz's old office and I made an appointment with Dr. Kanos. After knowing I was pregnant, his office scheduled me right away. And he didn't turn me down. I was really happy about that. Dr Jason Kanos is very relaxed and keeps the visits short. The waiting time was always short. Once he was at a delivery and I waited for 30 minutes but got a couple of cordial updates on his expected arrival time. He never alarmed me but checked on every symptom that didn't feel right. I do like to express myself, and frankly being pregnant is beyond weird. Dr. Kanos always reassured me that these feelings were normal. Pregnancy is surprisingly hard: emotionally and physically. You got to trust that ob-gyn and that is hard too. Will the doctor respect what I want? Absolutely yes. Dr. Kanos listened to all the requests I made months before delivery. Dr. Kanos does seem at times cold but I think he is being professional. Most important is Dr. Kanos always was very accurate about suggestions to improve my lifestyle and the babies health. He also always returned calls during or after office hours. Madonna at the front desk, and Alina his nurse, are also very warm and friendly. When I delivered both times in 2010 and 2012, Dr. Kanos was there throughout the labor. They were fast deliveries without complications, and I left the hospital the next day. Almost immediately I resumed my normal lifestyle. This happened in my 2 pregnancies. This is no coincidence. Dr. Kanos has the lowest rate of cesareans. I'm very scared of pain, but he didn't let me panic. I never thought I'd have a baby because it was too painful. Never mind after 40. Dr. Kanos made my experience safe and I remember the birth of my babies like the happiest day in my life. I was able to enjoy my newborns without pain. The delivery rooms have a huge window overlooking New York City. I loved looking out there at the tall buildings. The Roosevelt Hospital nurses were very kind too and helpful with their newborn suggestions. This was my experience. Women don't have babies all that often, and so trusting the doctor is essential. Dr. Kanos has been been my GYN doctor for over 22 years. He delivered my son child 22 years ago and my grandson almost 6 years ago. I'm still with him today. I referred many to him and he has not let anyone down. On the contrary he has been a blessing to all the women I have referred to him. You should be very reluctant when considering Dr. Kanos as your OBGYN. The first visit with him was extreeeeeemely quick & awkward. I returned to him only after asking his front desk a bit about his personality. When they confirmed he is just a dry person who takes a minute to respond - allowing himself time to process information before responding - I felt a bit more comfortable to return. Additionally, his follow up communication via MyChart was acceptable & timely, even while he was on vacation, so I returned to him. HOWEVER, when the next step became surgery, he was nowhere to be found. He told me he would only discuss in person - despite my best efforts in explaining the outrageous amount of time I had to already take off in 2018 due to other unforeseen circumstances. Regardless, I made an appointment to appease the doctor. I will not be back. Upon arrival the wait time appeared to be insane. I inquired with the front desk - who always seemed very helpful, honestly - and they said no more than 30 minutes. That quickly turned into another 20 minutes and so on. After the appointment, I felt ridiculously taken advantage of. Yes, the $40 copay was a joke... but what really set-in as disappointment & anger is that he compromised the quality of my visit as means to get back on track with his other appointments. I am 100% confident this was his intention given his demeanor and watch-observing for the full 10 minutes he was in the room with me! As a doctor, it is your job to share the knowledge you learned in Medical School with your patients; to have conversations about topics your patients are unfamiliar with; to bring awareness & education to topics and connect the dots how it relates to your patient's health/life. You should especially have that courtesy to do so when you force your patient to waste sick hours at work (right before a surgery nonetheless) to come in the office to discuss this with you. Especially when they sit in your waiting room for over 60 minutes, yet only get 10 minutes of that hour with you. ***It is NOT in your job description to interrupt your patient's questions with a statement such as "let's go ahead and get back to your questions" because you deem the question irrelevant or a waste of your time. I am the one paying YOU to take care of ME. Furthermore, it is NOT in your job description to stand up in the middle of a "mandatory in-house consultation" to wash your hands, open the door, and say as your WALKING THROUGH THE DOOR WITH YOUR BACK TURNED AWAY FROM ME "call me or email me if you have any questions".*** In the end, don't make your patients come into your office to discuss a surgery if you are not going to give them 20-30 minutes of your time. If you plan to allot only 10 minutes, you should be upfront with them when you code the OV-10. It's not rocket science. read more

It feels kind of weird to be writing a review for an OB-GYN, but I know how stressful it can be to find a good doctor - especially for something as important as having a baby. And Dr. Kanos is, without doubt, the best doctor I've ever had. Period. Dr. Kanos was my doctor throughout the pregnancy and birth of my son last year. He has a laid back personality and dry sense of humor that helped me cope with the jitters of being a first-time mom. I had a fairly uncomplicated pregnancy, with a few scares along the way. Every time a potential problem came up, Dr. Kanos was very attentive and supportive, but in a non-alarmist way. I think this latter quality is very important - so many OB-GYNs are so worried about being sued that they seem to be afraid to let you live a normal life while pregnant, give you an opinion or simply tell you that it's going to be okay. Prenatal appointments were easy to make, and his support staff (assistants and nurses) were all lovely to deal with. And because Dr. Kanos is not part of a group practice, choosing him as your doctor means that, subject to unforeseen circumstances, he will be the one delivering your baby. Actually, he was present throughout my labor - yep, the entire thing - something of a rarity these days! He checked in on me regularly after the birth, which was a nice and personal touch. And when I experienced some postpartum complications a few weeks after delivering my son, he was extremely proactive in helping me to resolve the problem (including being available by phone after business hours). The only negative, which actually has nothing to do with Dr. Kanos, is that his admitting privileges are solely with St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital. While I had a fantastic birthing experience there, the postpartum care by the nurses left a lot to be desired - perhaps I was just unlucky, but thought it worth mentioning. read more

Dr Kanos delivered my first baby in June 2018. He wasn't my regular OB but he was on call that day so I met him that day. I found him very cold and disrespectful. My labor was a bit stalled and he was pressuring me in an agrressive way to do procedures that I didn't want to. Towards the end of the delivery, I expressly told him that I wanted him to stop performing a perineal massage because he was hurting me, he pretended to stop but continued anyway. I managed to have a natural labor thanks to my amazing doula, but I have been traumatized by Mr Kanos' mean and disrespectful attitude. I will not recommend and/or deliver at Mount Sinai West ever again. read more

I can't say enough good things about this man. What an amazing doctor. I moved to New York just under 8 weeks of my due date. I did my research both on my insurance company's website, and on good old yelp, and he seemed to be the one, AND WAS I RIGHT! The office took me in, which as I understand, getting into a new practice so close to your due date can be challenging. Dr. Kanos was very pleasant, and easy to talk to and be comfortable with. I had my first baby with Dr. Kanos, and I couldn't ask for a better delivery. I am so grateful for this experience. He really eased me into delivering my son, and made it special by involving my husband in the delivery. When it came time to push, he was very calm and casual, and...before I knew it I realized I was about to meet my baby. Any fear or anxiety I may have had about doing this for the first time didn't even surface, due to the relaxed environment he provided. He is attentive to detail, remembering everything about mine and my husband's personal life that we shared with him between visits. This really meant a lot to me! Any woman would be lucky to find Dr. Kanos as her OBGYN. SIDENOTES: If you have Aetna for your insurance, he is a preferred provider, which is a bonus. His office is clean and well stocked, his receptionist, Madonna, always remembered me, and the nurse (I had the same one every time) was very sweet and genuine. I never waited more than 10 minutes to be seen for my appointment time, and never felt hurried during my exams. Dr. Kanos is the best! My gyn ended up leaving Mt. Sinai network and I needed to pick a new doctor and the reviews are right! He is very attentive, explains everything so you completely understand and I feel completely comfortable with him during my appointments. He gives all possible options for treatment and he always listens to all questions and takes time to answer them and really pays attention to your concerns. He also gets back to you very quickly when you send questions outside of appointments. I recently had surgery and him and his team at the hospital were outstanding in calming me down before the surgery and the actual operation went very well and he's been great communicating during recovery and follow ups. The office staff is also very courteous and very efficient. I am glad i found them and will remain a patient as long as he is practicing!! read more

Dr. Kanos has been my GYN for over ten years. I secretly call him "Robot Ken Doll" :) He's a good looking, kind, Doctor with a bit of robotic movements (smiles infrequently) but is kind, gentle, interested and answers all questions. He's not an alarmist, but expresses concern. He always ends every visit with a moment for questions. Because of his slight "robotic" nature, every question is judgment free, emotion free, and allows you to be honest and open. He's now going to be my OB. He encouraged me to try to get pregnant as soon as I could because of my age, but then didn't "AMA" shame me after I was successful. He is realistic yet reaffirming. His staff is awesome, including Madonna. If you're looking for really warm and fuzzy, he may not be the best choice, but if you're looking for kind, gentle, knowledgeable, interested and fairly laid back, he's the man! Dr Kanos was my gyno for several years. Maybe he's a good OB if you don't have any issues with your pregnancy, but I had a miscarriage & then nearly died. I got pregnant in Jan of last year & went to see Dr Kanos when I should've been 6w4d. I let him know off the bat that I'd had a chemical pregnancy (a super early miscarriage) in the fall, so I was a little nervous. He said something to the effect of chem pregnancies not really counting. I thought that was a little insensitive, but they *are* super common & that had been our first try, so whatever. He does the u/s & I'm measuring over a week behind where I should be based on my last period. There's a gestational sac, a yolk sac, & he thinks a shadow of a fetal pole. So he takes a pic of the gestational sac (not even showing the yolk sac) & hands it to us. Uh, thanks. But again, whatever. Before he leaves, I ask if he's worried that it's measuring behind & he says no. I thought it was a little odd bc I track my cycles so I know exactly how far along I should be, but I figure he's probably seen this before. He's not worried, so I'm not worried. I now realize that he probably just didn't trust me to know my cycle. The Thurs before Presidents' Day, I realize that all my symptoms have disappeared. That worries me, but I find a lot of women on pregnancy forums who mention that happening to them periodically during healthy pregnancies, so I decide to wait & see. Fri still no symptoms. I call & Dr Kanos tells me that women have good & bad days with pregnancy symptoms, it looks like I'm having some good days. After 5 "good" days, I make an appt, he does an u/s: no progression. It's over. My husband & I are crushed, but we get that these things happen. I decide to wait to miscarry naturally since I wasn't that far along. He's fine with that and tells me it'll be like a heavy period. I'll need to come by every week for a blood draw until my hCG gets down to 0. Cool. Eventually I start bleeding. And it's really fucking painful. Three days in a row, it basically paralyzes me @ work toward the end of the day (yes, you can go to work during a miscarriage, especially that early; heavy period, remember?). On day 3, I make my husband call to ask if I can get some pain meds. Not so much bc I'm lazy, but bc it's really difficult to talk through that much pain. Dr Kanos asks to speak w/me and basically blows me off while I'm sitting there barely able to talk. He tells me to wait until our next appt (later that week). This is the third day in a row. At the appt he (finally) gives me a rx for percocet. I go home & continue bleeding. And bleeding. And bleeding. By the 4th week of this, I'm starting to wonder wtf is going on. At this point, I've been miscarrying for more time than I was actually pregnant (the first two weeks of pregnancy are basically a lie). I ask him what's going on & his response is "Maybe it's your period?" He literally said those words in that manner. At this point I want to emphasize two things: 1) I HAVE NOT STOPPED BLEEDING, 2) HE'S been checking my hCG levels weekly. Two things to know about miscarriages: 1) you don't get a period until @ least 24 days after the bleeding has stopped, 2) you don't get a period until there's NO hCG in your system. That appt was on a Thurs. The weekend comes and I am NOT okay. I'm getting lightheaded & tired easily. At one point Sunday, I ask my husband to find out where the nearest ER is just in case. But I make it & try to go to work Monday. (There's a big event coming up later in the week so I need to go in.) The walk to my train is four blocks. By the third time I had to stop & rest on my way there, I decide to go to the ER instead. I think I stopped to rest a total of 6 or 7 times. At the ER (St. Luke's, chosen specifically bc Dr Kanos is affiliated w/them), I find out that I've still got "products of conception" in my uterus. It's an incomplete miscarriage. This is a thing that happens. I also find out that my blood (count?) is 6. They tell me that during your period it can get down to like 12. MINE IS HALF THAT. That's why they take your blood every week during a miscarriage. TO PREVENT THIS SO YOU DON'T DIE. I get 2 transfusions & spend 2 days in the hospital. Dr Kanos is on vacation, but he gets a message that this has happened. At time of writing, he has still not followed up. He is not my gynecologist anymore. Now I realize that I could've done some things differently here. I could've advocated for myself a little better. I could've asked more questions. But you know what? I was going through a fucking miscarriage. My second one in a row. If you've never been through a miscarriage, it's a fucking MISERABLE experience. I didn't want to know what my hCG levels were. I didn't want to know anything, I just wanted it to be over. And I trusted that my doctor was doing his fucking job. Dr Kanos may be great when nothing goes wrong, but he failed me big time. I heart Dr. Kanos. I was referred to him by my primary care physician and I am so happy that he's been my coach throughout the pregnancy. Sadly, I will be leaving him prior to my delivery in October as my husband and I are moving to San Francisco...and I am afraid that no doctor in SF will measure up to him. He's just so wonderful. He will patiently address any question you have. If you leave a message for him, expect a returned call that day! He will call with test results the moment they come in instead of waiting for your next visit. He has an awesome dry sense of humor and I love love love when we see him crack a smile at one of my quirky questions or descriptions of my pregnancy symptoms. Dr. Kanos is an excellent, excellent doctor and I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking and OBGYN. Both my husband and I were so grateful to have him as our doctor during my pregnancy, particularly as I ended up having a scary complication and extended hospital stay at the end. He is incredibly easy to get in touch with, something that is unusual for a lot of doctor's offices - every phone call got a call back from him, whether during office hours or after, and once when he couldn't reach me he called multiple times to make sure we could talk. When I've had to call the emergency line he's gotten back to me very quickly. His front desk staff are great and friendly and the wait is very reasonable (10-45 mins max). What I like most about Dr. Kanos is his demeanor - he is always calm, as another patient said never alarmist, straightforward, and makes clear when he thinks something is medically necessary, when he has a recommendation, and when a choice is totally up to you. He always makes time for questions during every appointment, and follows up on issues as necessary. Also fyi I've never found him to be awkward so am not sure what those reviews are about; he's just very straightforward and even-keeled. He was present at my delivery and remained calm and kept me calm despite some issues - I never felt anxious or scared. While I was in the hospital he checked in in person every day and I felt like I had someone coordinating and problem-solving amidst all the different doctors and nurses each shift. Finding an OB (and pregnancy in general!) can be really stressful, so I wanted to leave this review in case it helps anyone else make their decision. read more

Very excellent doctor. He is my second ob/gyn doctor. First one was awful. I lost my baby. and moved from Arizona to NYC. He is so good, knows his job very well. When I didn't feel moving I went without app, and told it is emergency. I overreacted, because I lost first one who had stopped heart beating. he knows my experience in Arizona,he said I understand you. Checked me with sonogram and told everything is good, showed me how my baby is moving. I couldn't stop crying. My first ob/gyn didn't know that my results came back not good. after 15 days When I went with flu, I ask myself. After this he ask my case from nurse and read it. And told me to go to high risk doctor. He was really awful doctor. I had very bad experience. Now I am so happy. Jason Kanos is the best. When my results came back. he called himself and told everything find.I am so thankful to him. read more

Medically, Dr. Kanos is fine. However in the last eight months, I've had three separate incidents where I've been ill, and I've both been unable to see Dr. Kanos or another provider, and the office was unwilling to see if Dr. Kanos would prescribe me something over the phone for a simple recurring issue. They also refused to refer me to another provider. This office hinders healthcare, rather than facilitates it. FWIW, I do not have children and used his GYN services only read more

Dr Kanos is absolutely the best ob/gyn doctor. I feel comfortable with him during my exams and I can ask him anything in regards to my exam. He just recently performed an abdominal myomectomy surgery on me due to fibroids and he was very patient in answering ALL of questions even up to minutes before my surgery. My surgery of course had pain but once given some pain medicines was okay. Dr Kanos is very laid back & very calm. His dry sense of humor put me at ease during my surgery. read more

Dr. Kanos is absolutely the most wonderful OBGYN and I would recommend him to any woman. I had to switch from a New Jersey doctor after moving to New York and after reading many reviews I decided to give him a try. He has been my doctor for 3 years now and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about him. He was my doctor through my entire pregnancy and it was always a joy to visit his office. The waiting time in his office is very minimal, even though he will spend as much time as you need with him. He not only thoroughly explains things to you but he will also sit patiently and answer ALL your questions tirelessly and happily. He has a great personality and sense of humor which makes it a joy speaking with him. He and his staff are top notch, professional and always flexible when I need an appointment. His office is immaculately clean with tons of interesting reading material and a staff of people who will research and explain any insurance questions I had very quickly. Dr. Kanos is an extremely calm and rational person, he made my time in the delivery room a zen experience. Having him as my doctor throughout the delivery surely added to the fact that it was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. He is so positive, calm, reassuring and knowledgable that it sets the whole experience completely at ease. For my delivery I was admitted to St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital and it was a great experience. He doesn't share a practice and as such he is the doctor who will deliver your baby and this was very important to me b/c I wanted a full service practice like his. I have many friends who have doctor/hospital/labor horror stories, I was thrilled to have had a trifecta of perfection for my pregnancy journey.
