I went here with a friend for Saturday lunch.
We both ordered the falafel with homemade pitta bread, my friend also ordered a tomato and okra dish which was served with rice. You can see pictures of the mini doughnut-shaped falafel posted by other Yelpers. The texture was OK, but I felt they totally lacked the spices and herbs I am accustomed to. Although served with a small amount of spicy tomato relish and a creamy dip, the blandness of the falafel and the lack of any side salad made me feel that you would need to order at least one other mezze or a main to make a palatable meal.
I tasted my friends okra dish, it seemed alright. However, the veg portion seemed a bit small compared with your average veg curry portion, for example, and it was also more of a soup or sauce than a thick stew, so even if the price was reasonable I wouldn't call it a bargain. Four falafel with bread was £3.75.The okra stew with lamb is £8.50 on the menu, although I think my friend paid a good bit less for the meat-free version.
Both of us are vegetarian. The waitress was quite accommodating of this, pointing out several mains which could be adapted to be vegetarian. There were also some interesting vegetarian fatayer options.
From a single visit, my impression is that this place aims to be affordable and also seems to have integrity in terms of cooking things fresh, from scratch. It was quiet at 1pm on Saturday with just one other table of four, but then evening is the main time for restaurants with wine glasses on the table!
I might eat here again, you could definitely do a lot worse! read more
