To the right of the school building, there's a "Welcome to our Sculpture Park and Nature Tail" sign but not much nearby. Yep, the nature trail part and you'll end up walking at least a half mile and maybe more before you start to spot the sculptures on a trail that branches off to the right. If you're here in the warmer weather, you'll want to be prepared with some bug repellent spray as they were all around us today. But we managed to find the sculptures and enjoyed the trail. Not only does it feel lucky to have access to these artists, but the workshops are also surprisingly affordable. The on-campus housing is clean, private, and affordable, as well. Because workshops take place in Summertime, in an area that is typically a wintertime destination, there are plenty of good restaurants, accommodations, and extra activities to do while in the area. Grateful to have found this place. This will be my third workshop here.

How can i forget Women's Studio Workshop???…read more There's no way I could gush enough praise of this place that would come close to describing how wonderful it is! gosh, where do i start?? 1) The studios: They transformed an old hardware store from the 1800s into a two story art studio that includes areas for: paper-making, printmaking, letter pressing, bookbinding, ceramics, photography and silk screening. It's set in the woods and surrounded by nature 1 mile outside the small, Hudson Valley town of Rosendale, NY. 2) The artist opportunities: They offer fellowships, studio rentals, residencies, paid-internships and grants for artists (mainly women, but not exclusively female) to come use their studios and create work. --- I, myself, was accepted as a studio intern and lived and worked on the premises for 6 months in the fall of 2005. I learned more in that six months then i did in 4.5 years in art school. 3) Classes: For artists who don't have the time to take off 4-6 weeks to work as a fellow or resident The Summer Arts institute offers 3-5 day classes (lunch included) in all of the studios areas: paper-making, printmaking, letter pressing, bookbinding, ceramics, photography and silk screening. 4) The women: Ann, Tana and Anita (the founders and owners) are all talented artists, friendly, compassionate and inspiring women. ... for everything i missed their website is a wealth of additional detailed information on classes and artist opportunities: http://wsworkshop.org/ .... sigh... The facility was surprisingly large with a massive breadth of information, most of which was left for you to read (if you did not take the guided tour), though there was some video content as well. Some of the modeled recreations were rather old and not very detailed, but the authentic items on view were very interesting. Overall, it was a decent way to spend an hour or two, but I would not say that you would NEED to go out of your way to visit (at least from the indoor perspective).

This review is limited to the used book store that TSL operates - in short, it's among the very…read morebest used book stores I have a visited in quite some time, and that's really saying something. They have an extensive number and wide range of books, including art books, most in very good or better condition. The organization is largely by subject (and even then, assignment to a particular subject area seems somewhat whimsical), but within categories, they are not well sorted - so it does take some time to browse. Pricing is a very modest flat fee, given the condition and rarity of some titles (currently $4 per hardcover, $3 per paperback). Thus it's possible to find many titles, including first editions, well under typical pricing found elsewhere. The staff people are really nice. When bagging up my purchase, one of the larger tomes ripped the paper bag slightly, so the staff person got some gaffer's tape to repair the bad and prevent it from continuing to rip apart. This is an interesting outdoor place to come and visit. Words cannot describe the gentlemen…read morespending 40 years to complete this. You have to come and see for yourself the hours of shaping stones with hand tools to be an outdoor art piece that is beautiful to see, walk around to enjoy. There are park benches around where you can sit and enjoy a snack and take in all the different levels of this outdoor artwork. The entry to the park includes a road that you have to share with in/out traffic. Drive slowly and turn out if needed to let the other traffic pass. Be patient and you will enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Cost: $11 online. In person is $1 extra Tip: 1) Purchase tickets online. As we were leaving there was a sign that said park at full capacity and only those with pre-purchased tickets were allowed into the park. 2) Main parking lot can get full fast. It wasn't until after we parked and went to the ticketing office there was a sign for overflow parking. 3) I did not see a bathroom anywhere, so plan accordingly.
