We hired Grazia Concept for the demolition on 2 floors, totaling approximately 3500 sq ft. Post demolition, plaster walls needed repairing, repainting, junk needed to be hauled and an entire 1800 sq ft of wood flooring needed to be patched, sanded and stained. The job took on an incredible pace and the finished product outstanding. I hired NJH to repair damage to a restored antique mahogany staircase in my house…read more The newel post at the end of a section of the banister had separated from the handrail and was loosed at the base. That made this section of the banister wobbly, unsafe and prone to further damage. Prior and now failed repairs with mastic and nails were an eyesore and calling for further restoration work. Ben with Kellam's supervision closely conferred with me how to do the best structural and cosmetic restoration of the banister. They dismantled the newel post from the handrail and the mounting of the post to the staircase frame, and removed old nails and mastic from the post rails joint all without damage. To remove the post, they had to remove stapled carpeting and a stair tread that they replaced without damage at the end of the job. They very securely remounted the newel post with corner backets under the stair tread and long bolts into its base covered with matching round plugs. Having so securely remounted the post and restoring the post to rail mortise and tendon, the handrail was solidly secured without the further use of mastic, nails or screws. With a few touchups to old wood putty, they then managed to remove obvious evidence of prior repairs. As this section of handrail may need a restoration replacement to match the quality of the other staircase handrails, their method of reconnection rail to the post will allow for less problematic handrail replacement without damage.

I interviewed several drywallers, painters, and contractors before choosing EC Painting & Home Maintenance. Efrain's verbal communication and English is EXCELLENT which was very important to me when choosing a contractor to make sure everything went smoothly. I knew my project had unique challenges--unlevel floors, walls and doorways that weren't square or plumb, nail pops, and large settling cracks from a 49+ year-old building. I was very concerned no matter what I did things would never look "straight," but Efrain worked with me diligently to get things "picture perfect" so that the crooked walls and floors disappeared and became invisible to the naked eye when finished. From the start, Efrain listened carefully, answered all my detailed (often technical) questions, and worked with me to find the best approach--for example, reframing bifold doors so they would look straight and close properly when one side of the floor was nearly 2" lower than the other. I know I'm not the easiest customer since I like to understand exactly how things will be done, but Efrain was patient, explained everything clearly, and was flexible as we figured out solutions along the way. Also, unlike some contractors/owners who show up for an estimate but then send different workers to do the job, which often results in gaps in communication, he also did most of the work personally (adding 1-2 additional crew when needed) and was always available and responsive to calls, texts and emails, so there were no communication gaps. Whenever something wasn't "just right" and needed a little tweaking or change, he never complained once and made sure I was completely satisfied with the finished result.
