A wonderful way to travel. Keeps traveling spicy. I've taking the Ferry 3 times now and I love it. Honestly I would love to do it just as the sun is setting.... Imaging the photos! They crew has always been amazing! Hardworking, and so darn nice! It's very easy, wait your turn, follow directions, park and ride. I usually get out of the car and look around. The bathrooms are good. Every boat is different. If you are in the Jamestown area, try to take the ferry and see what's across the water. Or get off and get back on. It's just an experience.

I think this was my first time ever on a ferry that transports cars. We arrived just as one was leaving dock, but 25 minutes later the next ferry arrived. Cars were parked in three rows; we were the first in line in the third row. Once we set off we got out of our car. The breeze was so nice, the the salty spray of the water felt great. I really enjoyed it. It was FREE! Not the quickest route from Hampton, but we did go to downtown Smithfield for the Farmers' market and a quick look in the shops. So it was a great option for getting to Jamestown.

What a way to travel! This cool mode of transportation serves to ferry folks from Surry to Jamestown. The Powhatan, which we rode, holds 70 vehicles. There are a couple other ferries as well, The Surry, The Williamsburg, and The Pocohantas. Tourists, like us, enjoy the novelty of crossing the James River on the ferry, but many people use the ferry boats daily as the main course of commute for work. The ride was pleasant and smooth, and we didn't wait long at all for our ride, maybe 20 minutes. And it only took about 15 minutes to cross. The ferries run 24/7 about every 20 minutes or so, back and forth so plan your trip with plenty of time. Due to COVID-19, the salon and facilities were closed and we had to stay in our vehicles, but under normal conditions, passengers can get out of their cars and go to the top observation deck for scenic views of the James River! Some people have advocated for a bridge to replace the ferry, but locals have opposed the idea. The ferry is way cooler and fits the mood driving into historic Jamestown! On the other side coming into Surry, don't miss a visit to Bacon's Castle. Free to travelers, if you get a chance to hitch a ride, don't miss it!

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry is a free ferry that runs 24 hours and connects you to both sides of the James River. It's about 15 minutes, you can drive on with your car. The ferry runs all yr long. This whole area is lovely to go site seeing. I highly recommend it, it will save you some time. Maybe oneday I can take this ferry at sunset, for now Im headed to the Jamestown museum!

I love this little ferry. From the south, you get a wonderful Riverside view of Jamestown settlement. It's free to ride, and a pleasant side trip while in the Williamsburg area.

Crossed the James River. Very smooth boarding and disembarking. Boat was very clean and the crew were nice guys. A nice little ride on a Ferry!

It was a quick fun ride from Jamestown, VA to Surry, VA. I highly recommend it if you have time.

It does not take long to move across this short stretch of water. So hurry and unbuckle, get top deck and secure your hat if you have one. Then enjoy a view for around 10 minutes. Today was a beautiful Fall day to jump on at Surry and drive off at Jamestown. I was aboard the Pocahontas, one of two ferry's that trade off back and forth transporting passengers and their cars. This was a ride for pure pleasure, nothing really to do with avoiding traffic. However, it can be good for that as other reviewers have noted. The ferry has a schedule and for the most part it's every 30 minutes. Our tax dollars in Virginia completely pay for the ferry service, so relax and pay not a penny. This is something everyone should do at least once.

Last call! 11:55!

The Jamestown ferry is the perfect addition to any long drives between any two cities across the James River! Going by GPS prompts to Smithfield from Williamsburg, it said "ferry required". GPS said 45min ETA versus driving back around to 664 for a 3hr ETA. Um, no, I'm good. Mind you, we have never gone by ferry before. We thought, Lets give this a try. We drove there not knowing how much it was to ride the ferry or what the departure times were... we apparently got there right on time at 11:55, not even knowing we were the "last call" vehicle to board. We were extremely LUCKY to have made it! I was pretty excited to ride a ferry, like a toddler riding her first Ferris Wheel. Lol The Awesomeness: - You can park your vehicle and step out to enjoy the fresh air! - Nice scenery you don't see everyday! - For Free, No Fee! - Top Level Out Look Area! - 24/7 Services, even during holidays! - Decrease Travel Times, depending on your route! - Historic Aspects! - Great Kid Experience! - It's a FERRY!!! The Not So Awesome: - Watch out for big birds raising their butts to projectile poo on you. - IDK if they have set departure/arrival times. I would recommend! Great for family ventures, especially if you have kids!

It's FREEEEEEE!!!! WHOOPEEEEEE!!!! Gotta love it! What a great way to travel across the James River! I usually find myself here during the Summer months when I am dropping off or picking up my children from summer camp. I like to travel across on the Ferry and then head over to Water Country or Busch Gardens. I've always enjoyed using the Ferry service. It's picturesque and we all enjoy feeding the seagulls during our ride. I don't think we've ever remained in our vehicles while riding the ferry! We always get out and enjoy the view. It's relaxing and beautiful. Definitely well worth the experience!

Beautiful evening sky.

My favorite way to get from me to Williamsburg. ANYTHING to avoid Hampton traffic. So beautiful and peaceful. Best of all. FREE!!! Not many people in the area know of this; It is such an under-utilized service.

In 1609, Captain John Smith began construction of a fort site on the property. The fort was abandoned a few months later due to what would be known as the "Starving Time" in Jamestowne. The earthworks dug 411 years ago in 1609 can still be seen to this day. Captain John Smith built a fort on the south side of the James River as a retreat position should Jamestown be attacked by Virginia Indians or the Spanish. This dower tract of land between two streams was given to John Rolfe in 1614 by Powhatan upon Rolfe's marriage to Pocahontas. It is considered the first land actually given to America by the Indians. Rolfe is known to have cultivated the early tobacco crop on this property known as the Virginia Sweet. Between 1751 and 1765, a brick plantation house was built that still stands today, with much of its interior original pine woodwork still intact. The Manor House exemplifies the upper-middle-class lifestyle enjoyed by the Jacob Faulcon family in 18th-century Surry County. In 1886, the property, then called Gray's Creek Farm, was purchased by a collective group of African American families including Bolling Morris, John and Carter Hardy and Robertson Simmons. By the 1920s, Mr. Morris was the sole owner and he eventually sold it via an agent to John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Smith's Fort was later acquired by Preservation Virginia in 1933 and has operated as a museum ever since. Located in the manor house is a print on paper from a steel engraving done by John C. McRae in 1855 entitled, "The Wedding of Pocahontas." It was modeled from an original oil painting by Henry Brueckner in the same year. It depicts the day in April 1614 when Pocahontas was wed to Englishman John Rolfe, an event that initiated 8 years of peace with the Algonquin Indians. The original painting resides in the Getty Museum. This is a Virginia treasure and recommend a visit.

The ferry crosses the James River from either Jamestown or Scotland/Surry. The pleasant (about) 15-minute ride allows you to park your car on the ship and walk the decks to see seagulls or osprey flying by, water lapping the sides, and the oh so gorgeous view. The ferry has an upper viewing deck too, as well as restrooms. The ride is free and runs often at least twice an hour. Check their website for the schedule. Occasionally you may be randomly selected for a car check by security before boarding. This is done on the car with mirrors, but they check your trunk. It's pretty quick. Enjoy!

The woman who ran our tour is named Sarah and she is a direct descendant of one of the original families that lived there. Also assisting with the tour was a man named Kenny from a paranormal research group in Richmond. Kenny considers himself a sceptic. His organization (I can't remember the name), works to document data, analyze the data, and try to come up with a scientific reason for the "paranormal" incidents. Both Sarah and Kenny have LOADS of knowledge! They shared a lot of history and stories with our small group. They also provided K2 meters that detect energy fluctuations. The stories were absolutely fascinating, first-hand, and some very recent (including with Kenny the sceptic). While we were finishing our tour, we heard a loud thunk on the wooden floor of the landing where we were, as if it had been struck with a boot or solid-heeled shoe. Then the floor was vibrating in a progressing manner as if someone was walking across the floor. One of the light-up cat toy balls on the floor was lighting up like crazy and several of the K2 meters were lighting up. So how about that?! A tour WITH paranormal activity! What a fun experience! I cannot wait to go back!

Much has been written about the island; I can't go over the whole of it here. On a pragmatic level,…read morethis cruise has a lot of limitations. It takes over an hour and a half to get to the island, which means that realistically you'll spend more time on the boat than at the destination. It's puzzling to me that their departure time is 10 AM; a little earlier would help out with that. The boat is okay, but clearly not new and it doesn't have a ton to offer during the ride, and I overheard that they don't run at maximum speed because it isn't economical. They also kind of strangely insisted on taking pictures of everyone and then trying to sell the pictures to us, which I didn't ask for and which might have been at least a more viable plan when everyone didn't just take their own pictures with their phone. Getting to the island, I have to say it was one of the saddest places I've ever traveled. Everywhere you looked, including the fishing structures on the way in, was destruction and decay. It has to be a strange feeling being a waterman working in one of those places and every day seeing the ruins of your neighbor's fishery after he either moved away or died. Similarly, the island had many abandoned houses, and others for sale. Don't get me wrong; I don't necessarily look at it as a reason not to go. Thinking about the history as you see the present can be a worthwhile endeavor. Due to limited time on the island, it's hard to see much. There were kayaks for rent and some interesting shallow areas, but I didn't see anyone taking that route. Most transit on the island is by golf cart and a few paid tours were available. The island is walkable in size. The beach is nice, but it's hard to really explore it in the time allotted, and given the waterlogged approach, golf carts or bikes don't really help that much. The island has a distinctive culture that is still preserved, but it really does not seem that amenable to tourism. I don't necessarily blame people for wanting to keep random passersby out of their yards, but it's just not the most welcoming environment, and it's hard to see any other path forward for the island than ecotourism at this point. I'm curious to visit nearby Smith Island as well. I don't know what the future holds for Tangier.

($40 instead of $35) The ride over was fine, choppy in some parts. It was really breezy on deck, so watch your hats if you're wearing one. I luckily had my strap around my neck. Seating below is comfortable. We had quite a lot of people on board and I saw a guy bringing plastic chairs aboard. Many folks chose to sit up top under an awning. They receded pretty close together, so that was not an option for me with Covid having a resurgence once again. I stayed mainly below, but came up to bask in the sun and breeze. It takes some balancing to walk across the deck. It's about an hour and a half each way. Slightly shorter if you are coming from Crissfield, Maryland.
