My daughter and I came here for the first time today and boy was it the best 27min drive to have made on a Sunday. We were greeted with such warmth and hospitality so much so ,we were conversating with people who were not even in our party. The vibe was very familial like. The food was so delicious!!! Take a look at the picture. I do think the baked Mac Cheese was a bit underwhelming though. I felt like it needed more cheese and seasoning. Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed my food. I look forward to next week. While I was there I learned that the owner is a Marine Corps veteran who served in the Vietnam War. He has had his restaurant for 35 years. Looking for some tasty fresh soul food definitely try JAMESON'S. This has been my second time eating here and let me tell you the smell of fresh fried fish outside gets me every time. Jamesons is a small quaint restaurant where you can sit down and eat or take to go. We ordered to go but had to wait about 20 mins for the food which was perfectly fine with me. The owner offered us some bottles of water while we sat and waited. There's pictures and awards on the wall of the owner from when he served for our country. I was in the area at the beach and found Jameson's online. The food was great, visited twice and got several dishes. Here's my rundown- Overall-Clean establishment, owner very kind and attentive. Made sure I always had butter, utensils, cocktail sauce, etc. Also, I knew the portions were sizeable, the containers were heavy. I knew I would have more than just 1 meal out of each thing. Cooked to order and everything tasted hot and fresh. Bbq baby back ribs-Fall off the bone tender! The sauce was tangy with a lil sweetness. It wasn't a lil thin, but perfect for dipping. Chicken wings-They may just have been the best wings I've ever had...and I've had a lot of wings in my lifetime. They were cooked golden brown, seasoned to perfection, and not greasy. The cook knocked it out the park with this one! Jumbo shrimp- Definitely true to size and hand breaded. They came sealed in a plastic bowl so it made some of the breading soggy and fall off when I finally opened it. A lil heavy on the breading, but I wouldn't have minded if the bowl was vented to let out the steam so it maintained a lil crisp. Mac and cheese-Perfect texture and ratio of cheese to noodles. Needed a lot of salt, but once I added and reheated at home it was fine. Roast beef-Good size portion and not cut too thin or thick. It was just right. I think the gravy may have been made from a packet, but it was decent and they didn't skimp with it. Mashed potatoes and gravy-Tasted like instant potatoes. Just OK. Sweet potato pie-Was able to make 2 slices out of 1. Very flavorful, a lil heavy on the nutmeg. Good coloring and the crust was flaky and good. Only negative was the strings throughout. Soda-I got orange and grape. Great balance between flavor and kick. Old school taste, but not too strong. read more

Nothing fancy but everything was perfect! The place felt like many places I've eaten at in North Carolina. It was cozy, homey, and clean. The football on the TV and the music playing overhead reminded me of my boyfriend's Mom's house on a Saturday morning. Mr. Jameson was kind and soft-spoken. He even offered me a water while I waited for my order. The menu was large. There's something for everyone. The portions are HUGE and the food was soooo good! The yams had just the right amount of nutmeg and the whiting was ABSOLUTE LIFE!!! I wholeheartedly suggest the whiting. The breading on the chicken was light and crispy but that whiting...good Lord! My family has been getting take out meals, from here, for years. We have even purchased sweet potato pies for the holidays. I was born in Georgia so I am happy to find a place that makes desserts like banana pudding complete with Nilla cookies amidst fresh bananas in the pudding. Yum! Absolutely recommended. My new hobby during Covid is walking on the beach in the evenings after the crowds leave. Of course I need to eat something before burning it off. Location Off a main road, easy to find and parking available. Jameson's is a short drive from both Asbury and Ocean Grove beaches ( under 10 mins). Service I called and placed an order and service was friendly and answered all of my questions. The restuarant also takes Covid seriously and requires masks upon entering and implement social distancing - more points there. Food Amazing. Good flavors and not at all overly salty or greasy. Between my friend and I we ordered two dinners (I catfish , her whiting with shrimp) which were excellent values and came with two sides. My favorite side was the Mac n cheese though they were alllll good (collard, cabbage, sweet potatoes). For dessert we shared a peach cobbler: A+ and tasted homemade. Value Excellent. Two dinners (with two sides each) an extra side and a dessert to share and the bill was under $40. This will definitely be me go to soul food in the area. From a suggestion from a friend, I ordered food for pickup this past weekend. Google, Yelp, and their website said that on Sundays they close at 7:30p. I showed up at 7p but I was on the phone. To not be rude and approach the counter, I finished my call outside the restaurant. When I headed in, all three employees behind the counter told me they were closed. I apologized and said I was there to pick up food. The owner then said oh "this is for you, what is wrong with you being on your phone?" Taken aback, I apologized and said that I was doing something for work. He said yes I'm working too and I'm 71. Not sure why your age matters nor why you were being rude. The food was mediocre at best. Canned sweet potatoes with cinnamon dusted across the top. The macaroni and cheese tasted like it was fancy easy mac. I'm not too keen on how the food came out considering the price and the lack of customer service. I can't say that I would return. read more

I really hate to give this place three stars because I love soul food and I really wanted to love this place. However,this place deserves the three stars. There's a classic soul food menu to select from: Baked macaroni &cheese, collard green, fried fish, fried chicken, cornbread etc. Each meal comes with two sides and a cornbread muffin. The meals were pretty expensive for what you got a fried chicken meal cost $15. I wouldn't mind the high price if the food lived up to price tag, but sadly it didn't. I ordered the fried fish sandwich with potato salad green beans, and collard greens as the sides. The fish was ok, lightly fried and slightly bland seasoning. The green beans tasted like they were made straight from a can, not fresh at all and they lacked flavor. The potato salad was ok, but I've had better and the collard greens were just awful. No flavor at all! We asked what they used to flavor the collard greens prior to ordering and they said smoked turkey. If they were made with smoke turkey we surely couldn't taste it. It honestly had no flavor at all. Like I mentioned earlier, I have no problem paying high prices for food but the food must add up to the price. In this case it didn't. Found this place today when looking for a place to eat. It is a homey place on a major road. The owner, Mr Jameson, was in very welcoming. I checked the daily specials, thinking that I was going to get the oxtails.........UNTIL I saw that they had Croaker! I fried Croaker and can't get it on the West Coast where I currently live. I grew up eating it in DC. It did not disappoint! Crispy, well seasoned, and - with a bit of hot sauce - delicious. I had the sides of cabbage and mac and cheese. The meal also came with a cornbread muffin. The muffin was dense but good. The cabbage was quite good (not mushy) -but the mac and cheese - well, maybe they had an off day. I also tried the Jameson branded drinks: an iced tea and a black cherry. I ended the meal with a piece of Red Velvet cake. Overall, the meal was a good rendition of down home cooking - especially the fish! Mr Jameson talked with me during and after my meal. He served in the USMC from 65-69 and is currently heading up the local VFW. He's been in business for 23 years in the area. I hope to teturn before I go home on 5/10. read more

I really wish I could give more stars because five isn't enough. I have ordered twice from this establishment, and not once have I been disappointed. Every time I called in my order and picked it up, I was treated with respect and politeness. Due to COVID, I am unable to comment on the atmosphere, but given the short interaction between staff, I always walk out happy and excited about my food. I can't comment and rave enough about the staff! As for the food, similar to the staff, I can't complain. The ribs are my favorite dish they offer. The meat comes right off the bone and the sauce is amazing. I wish I knew their secret when making the sauce. As for the sides, their mac and cheese are also good, but my favorite would be either the collard greens or green beans. Don't get me started about the dessert. I would like to mention that the cobbler is a hot commodity, or at least it was for me. The first time I discovered Jameson's, I was unable to get a taste because it was all sold out. But, then I tried the banana nut pudding and I was just in my glory. The second time I was able to get the cobbler and I messed up; I forgot to pick up vanilla ice cream. Still incredible though. Down home, but this home is more down. When I think of down home southern type cooking I think of an ample amount of chow piled on a plate at a reasonable price. At about $20 for a plate of 4 oxtails with one being microscopic over a dollop of white tasteless rice, let's say I was a bit disappointed. I am an absolute connoisseur of oxtail specifically of the African variety. I spent quite a few Summers going back and forth to the Bronx where I was very fortunate to have been able to sample a variety of oxtail. And as I said the amount, quality and gravy flavor just isn't there, sadly. Now of course you can excuse the smaller portion for quality. The oxtail was ok, but hardly seasoned, cut too thin and rather bland like the rice. The collard greens were fine, but then again it's collard greens with a touch of vinegar added and your good to go. The cabbage was of a similar vein. They do have their own labeled soda, I don't know who they may be reselling, but I happened to have the White Birch Beer and it was good. There isn't any service so to speak, they bring the plate out to your table and that's about it. Place was fairly clean with only a handful of tables. Byob. I also found it quite strange that there was a rather large number of high reviews from people that only had reviewed just a handful of places???? Seems kind of fishy. So, with so few down home options in these parts this place may be worth a pop in to quench your desire for that fare, but be fair warned. I failed to try any other products so please forgive me if this review is short-sighted, but if they can't get a staple like oxtail right that leads me to believe that the other dishes will fall in suit. Had take out yesterday with my wife for the first time in years from Jamesons Southern Cooking. The owner, Mr. Jameson greeted us as we entered and was extremely pleasant to us. He even gave us each a bottle of water while we waited for our order. The counter staff were wonderful and willing to answer our questions. We shared the la carte platter consisting of a half rack each of baby back and St. Louis ribs with sides of mashed potato with gravy and mac and cheese. We had enough food for 4 meals so we equally enjoyed the leftovers the next night. I was very impressed with this small business and will return. read more
