This is probably one of the most awful experiences I've ever had in my entire life with regards to visiting a dentist. Not only is the dentist grossly over performing things that are completely unnecessary, but he ruined my wife's teeth because we believed the medical care he suggested was necessary. His bills are extra extraordinary costing in the thousands for minor Dental work whereas other local dentists barely reach hundreds for the same exact work the quotes they give you for the cost of service before and after are two wildly different things. Total rip-off, he'll say anything he can to get you to replace anything with crowns because its easier and he only sees his customers as $$$$. Simple cleaning turned into 1K as I was convinced to replace two teeth (he tried for 4) because of cavity, upon getting a second opinion for the other two, they easily fixed it under a few hundred, because he maxed out my insurance already. This is a reply to Dr. Kim and his comments. Dr. Kim says he has paperwork and documents for the treatment I received. Yes, I am certain that he does but that still doesn't take care of the fact that he did botched dentistry on me. This dentist filed down good teeth and then placed crowns. But like I also mentioned he didn't do any root canals even on teeth that showed up on his X-rays showing that I indeed needed that procedure. I'm not a dentist or a an oral surgeon and trusted what this doctor said and did. That was a major mistake. Like I also mentioned I did return to this dentist when I began to notice problems. He at that time recommended an oral surgeon also on Cass Street. I ended up finding my own oral surgeon and dentist with a great reputation and wonderful office. As for this dentist I don't want anything else to do with him or his staff. I really believe wholeheartedly that he being Dr. Kim is solely about money and not about good dental care. One other very important fact is that I am having problems with the crowns and bridges Dr. Kim did for me. I have a lot of bleeding issues and discomfort. So I definitely will be seeing Dr. May or Dr. Stoddard. read more

I had a crown done here. Best experience ever with a dentist! NO pain, very quick and friendly! They got me in a chair right away and started working quickly. I have issues getting numb so they prescribed medication to take before the procedure! What a godsend! I was terrified to get the work done, but Dr. Kim and staff did a great job and I had no pain!! THIS is the is the Dental Office I look for every time I move. I move often as my partner is in the Air force. The Office accepts Tricare Prime and has a small town vibe with down to earth, and professional staff. I needed Dr Kim to complete some paperwork for an move overseas. Barbra facilitated a smooth transition from my previous office to their office. I had Jill as a hygienist and was extremely pleased wither her attention to detail and her ability to read that I was interested in what was going on. Mostly, Jill changed my life, for the best, when she managed to clean up some flash from a filling I had received at a different dental office that that had been bothering me for 6 months. After going to this dental office for years I was suddenly blindsided at reception with questions about a pre-existing medical condition I had never been asked about before. Had I been asked a few days prior to the appointment I would have had an opportunity to get answers from my doctor. But no, I was not given that courtesy. After telling reception to call my doctor for the information I proceeded to the hygienist who persisted in asking the same questions I had previously said I could not answer. She created an atmosphere so confrontational & hostile I got up and left without services rendered. Dr. Kim is so good, that he did his procedures on me this morning, and he personally called me this evening at my cell to see if i was well and to encourage me to follow the instructions he gave me, and also to makes sure i was well. This office will cancel on you for no reason at the last minute. Then they will blame it on COVID 19 and they won't even offer to reschedule. The office cancelled on me less than 24 hours before an appointment time and offered no explanation. Then failed to reschedule me and kicked me out of the practice without warning. Three generations of my family have been seen at this office since 1994 when Dr. Caprio first practiced here. Until recently we had always paid cash and didn't have issues with the office staff. Since their longtime manager (Barbara) was fired, the unscrupulous and inept office staff have charged us upfront for covered procedures , a.k.a., double dipping. They refuse to reimburse us. I saw Dr Kim, again, this morning. He put in the second of two crowns I requested. No mumbo jumbo, just got to work, and got the job done. No pain. Dr. Kim and his staff are great! They are friendly and professional, but most of all they run a proficient operation. I have had a crown placed on after years of bad dental work in the military. I will have two more and a cleaning and I do not regret my choice. The front desk staff are great and fun to deal with. If your not satisfied (within reason) then they will work with you. This review might end up being a bit long, so for those who don't care to read in-depth reviews, here's the short version: I was told by Dr. Kim and staff that I had a cavity in one of my wisdom teeth and that I would need other expensive procedures (bridge replacement) right away. After having x-rays taken at a different dentist, I was told that there were actually no cavities at all in any of my teeth, and no mention was made about my bridgework showing signs of decay. Had I not gone for a second opinion, I would have spent thousands of dollars on dental work that I didn't need. The long version: I saw Dr. Kim twice. Both times left me feeling as if my own dental health was a mystery that I was not privy to. During my first visit, Dr. Kim never really addressed me directly. He spoke to the dental hygienist as if I was not in the room; saying things like, "Tell her that I think a crown is her best option." After I left the exam I overheard the hygienist telling the receptionist something about "decay in her bridgework." Wait..what? Why hadn't the Dr. mentioned that during the exam? Why did I have to find out about that at the reception desk in front of everyone in the waiting room? Awkward! They really pushed me to have my bridge replaced, and told me that I needed braces again as well, despite having already had braces for 6 years when I was a teenager. I did not have dental insurance at that time, so I was unable to act upon their suggested treatments. The hygienist was pleasant enough, but did not do a very thorough job. She missed a rather obvious patch of calculus between two of my front teeth. I've never had that problem at any other dentist office that I've been to before. I do like to give people the benefit of the doubt, so I chalked my first experience up to misunderstandings and miscommunication. Hey, it happens. Everyone was friendly and pleasant, despite the aforementioned awkward moments. So I went back to Dr Kim the next time I was due for another cleaning and check up. The second visit was off to a rocky start when, while reviewing my x-rays, the hygienist turned to me and said, "Oh, you forgot about that cavity in your wisdom tooth." I'm sorry but...WHAT. No mention of a cavity was ever made at my first visit. There was the exchange about the decay in my bridgework. But no, I was never told about a cavity. I think I would remember something as important as that, had it been brought to my attention! It's actually kind of insulting to assume that I forgot. If they had told me about it during my previous visit, then why was no attempt ever made on their part to schedule some kind of follow up visit for a filling? Why didn't the Dr show me the cavity on my x-rays and discuss treatment options? Nothing about that made any sense to me, and it made me very uneasy. This time the Dr. was more personable, and spent time talking to me directly about his assessment of my dental health. I did appreciate that. But I do have to say that once again the hygienist missed that same area of calculus that she missed the first visit. Overall she was once again pleasant and professional (the comment about me forgetting my cavity aside). However, when I go to get my teeth cleaned I do expect them to be cleaned completely. Once again they pushed for me to schedule all kinds of visits with specialists and orthodontists. This time I relented and did schedule two exams with two different specialists, one which would have cost me about $150 (if I remember correctly) just for a consultation. There were so many little instances that occurred during both my visits to this office that just left me feeling so unsure. I ended up cancelling both specialist exams a few days later. I did not schedule a follow up with Dr. Kim regarding my "forgotten" cavity because I did not feel right about the way the situation was handled. Flash forward to the next time I was due for a trip to the dentist. This time I chose to go to a place called Salinas Dental Health. I'd been there before and loved it, but stopped going due to the distance. I am so glad that I went back. After x-rays and an exam with Dr. Andresen, I was delighted to find out that I actually DON'T have cavities in any of my teeth. He also poked around my bridgework and made no mention of any signs of decay. I was not pushed to schedule all kinds of expensive visits with specialists or told that I need braces ASAP. It really blows my mind that I could have gotten myself into debt following the unnecessary advice that I was given at Dr. Kim's office. Clearly there are many other people who have had wonderful experiences here, since there are many glowing reviews. But I personally can't recommend this dentist in good conscience. I don't like writing negative reviews (who does?), but in this case I felt like I needed to share my experience. read more

I admit once Dr. Caprio retired, I was worried if there would be a big change once Dr. Kim took over.... My experience with Dr. Kim has been wonderful. I have been a patient of that office since 1996 and the staff turn over is incredibly low! The office has recently been remodeled and is beautiful. I cannot say enough awful things about this dentist and office. Your money is their first priority. For my first (and last) visit they cleaned my lower arch only and billed it in full. No periodontal work etc. They expect me to pay for a full cleaning out of pocket for them to clean the upper arch. They refuse to work with me. No thanks, I will never return. For anyone looking for a dentist in network with the new insurance... Dr Kim James on 880 Cass has been AMAZING! We're only here another month and they got me in IMMEDIATELY for new patient X-rays and eval. I knew I needed some work done and have been able to make all 3 appointments before leaving. The staff are all incredible. They address you by first name when you walk in the door when I had been there only once before. Everyone I have come into contact with at the office has gone above and beyond to help out. I always have a million questions about what they are doing or using and they gladly explain everything to me. If you need work done, the front desk will give you the exact price of what to expect instead of the run around. They also do her best to get you the best price possible and is very knowledgeable about insurance and what tricare will cover. I even got a personal phone call from Dr. James himself a few hours after my last appointment to make sure my pain was under control. Dr. Kim is a great dentist and his staff is astounding. I recently had a crown put on an implant but since I put it off so long my teeth had shifted and it required a lot more fitting. Dr. Kim worked meticulously for close to two hours to make sure the fit was perfect. It was. Dr. Kim regularly calls in the evening after a procedure to check on my level of comfort etc. And getting my teeth cleaned is something I actually look forward to (really entertaining). They will bend over backwards to work with your insurance and get as much covered as possible. read more

Susan is the best hygienist I've ever had. I've just recently moved to Monterey and at my initial visit, she spent the extra time needed to get my teeth 'caught up'. I guess all the previous hygienists from other dental offices didn't do as good a job as they should've. Be careful coming here. I was there two years ago and Dr Kim had told me my teeth needed a whole bunch of cavity work done including a few crowns. I was moving soon so I couldn't get all the teeth work done, so we did just a small portion. Dr Kim told me to urgently come back so we could fix the rest of the teeth before it gets worst. But I never got back to him because I had to move. Well I moved across the country twice and BOTH times, in two different states with two different dentists, my teeth looked fine and no cavities were to be found. What?! Now I am questioning if the teeth he worked on (including one that I didn't feel like had issues but he "fixed" and put a crown on anyway) were never really honest problems to begin with. I'm afraid if I had stuck around longer, I would've thrown thousands of dollars down the drain.
