I have been to three dermatologists for a recurring epidermoid cyst. This time I went to Dr. James. He told me it would take 45 minutes to remove the cyst. I was really surprised because everyone else always did it in 15 minutes. He performed the surgery in a different and more preferred, successful way, that most dermatologists don't do anymore, because it takes up too much time. The other dermatologists sliced it with a scalpel, squeezed it out, and then pulled out the sac. (Or at least tried to.) I also had a scar from that being done. Dr. James did it in an entirely different way and took out the entire cyst whole and intact. It's much more difficult procedure to get the cyst out whole, and takes finesse and experience. But it's so much better, because it never comes back. After the surgery, he told me that he also modified my old scar. I never even asked him to do that. He was very meticulous and deliberate in all of his movements. Basically, what you want in a surgeon. I noticed he is also super prompt for each of his patients. When he says your appointment is at three it really is at three. Not 3:15 or 3:30. He was also really friendly, and patient, and would be a great choice for kids and older people. I'm so glad I found him. This is definitely the Dermatologist you want to go to. read more

Dr. Hu needs to change his business practices so patients can understand what they are paying for. Medical part of this visit went just about as well as a biopsy on the nose could. However, Dr. Hu gets 1 star because of he sent a bill with no description of the services rendered, just some esoteric procedure codes, requiring immediate payment. To me this is an unethical way to treat your patients. Requiring someone to immediately pay a bill without providing the ability to understand what they are paying for is just wrong. Next time I will use a different dermatologist. read more

Being in my mid 30s, I thought this would be a good time to get my skin checked out. A friend referred me to this doctor. I showed all my skin issues to him and had a list of questions. Basically all those little things were minor and nothing to worry about thankfully. Dr. Hu was very helpful and took time to address all my concerns. Dr. Hu quickly cured the eczema around my eye that kept getting worse. i should have seen him earlier rather than self-treat. He prescribed a medication that was safe for the sensitive eye area and I haven't had any problems since. It was custom made at a nearby compound pharmacy. It has been a couple of years since I've had dermatology issues, but if I do have any I would see Dr. Hu again. I hope he stays in practice for awhile. read more

What a great dermatologist! Dr. Hu's office offered me a same day appointment when I developed a skin condition and he was incredibly kind, quick thinking and made a very quick diagnosis despite the fact that I'm a complicated patient. His office is really relaxed, with one patient at a time. He takes time to talk to you. I'd never have known about this tiny, old school private practice. There aren't enough old time-y caring docs like this left. Dr. Hu isn't at all focused on cosmetic dermatology. He does make his own all natural moisturizing lotion for people with really sensitive skin - lotion that simulates natural skin oils. Possibly a good doctor for chemically sensitive folks. Refreshing lack of any other products or med spa yuck. I won't even dock him a star for saying "these are really cool!" about my sun spots. read more

His office is old and unkempt, his receptionist rude and his demeanor is cold and in a rush. He sells Botox Groupons and asks for a positive review since he is selling it below market price. I came to see him for a cancer screening and a Botox treatment. I was never asked to disrobe or given a gown to change into. Once he came in, he did not do a full body checkup, just asked me to show him where my previous carcinomas where and what was concerning me. The botox was a bust as well, the spot where he placed the injection (which he assessed by using sticks... long story) was sore for two months! I received a non descriptive bill just like the one in the previous reviews and when I called to ask for an explanation, I had to fight to get an itemized bill. Turns out he used the wrong code for a procedure and now my insurance won't cover it. This man shouldn't be practicing medicine. Please do not fall for the Groupon deal like I did, you will regret it. read more

Good dermatologist. A small operation for sure (this isn't Swedish Group Health). If you want a competent, experienced doctor who give honest consults and doesn't try to upsell you on treatments, products or medications you don't need, you're in the right place. If you're looking for a hyper-modern medical office with a spa-like vibe, you will be disappointed. The medical receptionist isn't just answering the phone, she's filing insurance papers and renewing prescriptions all day in addition to scheduling appointments. I agree that the office can be a bit slow in responding (hence my comment about it being a small operation). It's brains over beauty here. read more

Do not waste your time coming here. I would give this guy negative stars if it would allow me to. My first visit there, I get there a few mins early. The receptionist got me checked in and sent me back to a room. Although other reviews on her were negative, she was quite prompt in her duties. After about 30 mins of waiting, I stepped out to ask if I was going to be seen. She looked surprised, and didn't know I was waiting still. When she went looking for James, she found him doing an unplanned procedure. When she told me, I was immediately frustrated and asked what this meant for my appt. She then went to ask him how long he would be, he gave a short response and said not long. 15 mins pass, still nothing. So I walk out and he's standing there just talking to another patient in the lobby. Still doesn't say anything to me so I continue to walk to the receptionist to request a refund on my copay. He looks at me and says, I can see you now. And I respond confused telling him I don't have time. He then shrugs his shoulders and goes back to the office rooms. Even the receptionist was shocked. I expressed disappointment and frustration that he didn't even apologize for wasting an hour of my time. She said that it's rare that he apologizes so I asked her to bring him back out so I could explain to him what he did wrong. When I get to him, I tell him that his actions are ridiculous and unprofessional. He went on to blame the receptionist as if she was supposed to read his mind, then says he was taking care of his patient the way he believes he should, as if he couldn't step out before he started his non emergency procedure to tell me - hey, I'm sorry this is unexpected can you wait or would you like to reschedule. Or have the other patient wait since it's non life threatening! But of course, he is oblivious to his unethical, unprofessional, and lack of patient courtesy ways that he thinks it's everyone else's fault but his that he didn't communicate appropriately. After I told him about himself, he got all worked up and said, well clearly you shouldn't be a patient of mine. And in my head I was thinking... Duhhhh!!! Hell no I wouldn't take you as my doctor, you are horrible! Your character, your practice, it's all a joke! And please don't get me started on his bootleg, 1950's office. All the money he is taking from his patients, he needs to invest in his old, crusty ass office. I was honestly questioning even staying after I walked in because this place was so dingy. Mind you, as I was waiting, I looked at the reviews online and there were similar stories to mine. So I should have known better and researched before o went. Say at that to say, this place sucks. Have had a terrible case of Psoriasis for over 25 years. I've seen 4 Dermatologists in Seattle for treatment; Dr.Hu is not a Trustworthy Dermatologist. I'd not send anyone to see him under any circumstances. Great staff. His lack of adherence to the Doctoral/Hipocratic Oath is beyond disappointing. He refused to see me after 7 months leaving me now untreated and in serious condition. No confidence in his abilities, none. Zero. read more

Friendly environment however they have Groupon deals that claim to save over 59% on Botox for example. This is true but only if you start with. $19/unit of Botox. It costs them a maximum of $7/unit. It's deceptive. Nobody in their right mind would pay this so they offer it up at half price which allows them to sell it at the same as everyone else. read more

Review on Dr. Hu - 2 Stars. He is a conventional, clinical & traditional dermatologist. For my personal situation, we were not able to solve the dermatitis issue. Review on Dr. Hu Accounting System - 0 Stars. I had so many problems dealing with the bookkeeper. The problem started when I received a large bill that was over a year old with a note that stated "don't worry, this has not been sent to collections and will not incur financial charges". In researching (which took a long time and many calls placed on my part), there was a temporary bookkeeper that did not send out patient responsibility fees. This accrued over a year. In trying to resolve the issue, I asked that they take $20/month until my bill was paid off. The next form of communication received was a call from a collection agency. I was furious. I found that yet again there was a new bookkeeper who took my call and for the first time, I received an apology for the mishap. We resolved the issue by me paying off a negotiated balance because I didn't want to deal with any further deficiencies from this office. Insurance companies have a statute of claims processed of one year. There should be the same statute of limitations for patients as well. This was the worst accounting department I have experienced. WARNING: If you decide to use this doctor, make a note monthly to check and make sure bills have been sent to your attention. read more

Be aware of the excessive charges from this clinic. No discussion was made regarding to the more expensive "treatments" and I was surprised when I got an expensive bill after the fact. They are not transparent about their pricing. I did not return after learning about the charges, because it is obvious that they only care about making as much money out of their patients as possible. They are extremely unethical and handle communications poorly (because they simply don't care!). I disputed the charges, and was threatened that my bill would be turn over to collection agencies. I am not the only patient having the same issue. I've read similar comments regarding their pricing on other sites as well. I do not recommend this doctor. read more

This was a strange experience to say that least. Dr. Hu was late coming back from lunch and hardly said more than a couple of words to me. I've been to Skin Spirits at the U-Village and the staff is VERY experienced at injections and cosmetic skincare. I would not say that Dr. Hu is experienced in cosmetic skincare. He is a MD in dermatology which is very different. He was measuring my wrinkles w/ an old-school ruler and he had a head-lamp/bifocal thing on that had dust on the lenses - the whole experience didn't seem legit. The worst part was that he asked me to wash off my makeup w/ a USED bar of soap sitting in a dish next to the sink! Keep in mind I am sitting in a room where patients are coming in for all sorts of skin issues. The rooms are dingy and need a good cleaning. There were bottles, jars, tinctures etc. sitting in one of the rooms that looked like they had expired long ago. Not a place I would revisit. read more

I bought a groupon for botox from Seattle Dermatology Clinic- DR HU. ive had botox a number of times and it never lasts much longer than one month for me. i told dr. hu about this and when he came back, the liquid in the syringe was yellow. and he told me to use my muscles as much as i can to get the "botox" to work. I've never had anyone inject yellow botox in me and i've never been told to use my muscles after being injected with botox! what did he put in me!? After researching online what color should botox be, every doctor has said it should be crystal clear as water. It should never be yellow. read more

Dr. James Hu is a wonderful doctor, he's been my doctor for almost 20 years. He listens to what's wrong and then takes the least invasive approach first. The reason he's been my doctor for so long is because he has always helped me manage and fix all of my dermatology needs. We've disagreed about an approach to take for treatment, but Dr. Hu stayed patient with me until I realized his suggestions were the best treatment. He's truly the best dermatologist ever! read more

Described himself as an expert in treating psoriatic arthritis without having an extensive research background in it (relies on anecdotal patient experiences). Said he didn't want patients to be educated, but rather just to trust him. He's the kind of doctor that will overmedicate and provide unnecessary procedures to make more money. I am 59 years old and it was pure luck from taking my mothers doctors advise to call Dr. James Hu. I had numerous appointments with my regular doctor and even another specialist that could not diagnose what my problem was.From my very first visit I was comfortable with Dr. Hu and his staff. Being a new patient sometimes can be frustrating not the case at all with his office. I was impressed immediately by the fact that just by looking at my hands Dr.Hu knew exactly what my condition was. I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis. I was not just given a prescription to go fill. Dr. Hu took the time to explain the changes in my body and he was very thorough in the questions he asked of me and then let me ask my own questions. After many visits and his careful monitoring of the results of the medications he prescribed I now feel that I should be sharing with other people that could be as miserable as I was that he has he has given me an opportunity to enjoy a some what normal life again. Making an appointment here was easy, and I was booked for an 11:30am appointment for the same day, but was told to come in earlier for paperwork. I found it a bit odd that no one asked what I was to be seen for, but didn't pay much attention to that. I get to the clinic at 11:20am, finish the paperwork in about 5 minutes, and sit for 20 minutes before being told that Dr. Hu is running "a bit late." Well, another 25 minutes go by and I have still not been seen or even taken back to the room. A bit before noon I am finally taken back to the room and am told that Dr. Hu had two patients before me, and he just went in to see his second one(!). I begin wondering why my appointment was made for 11:30 if he is not even close to being ready at 12, and am now spending money on parking and extra time away from work. I sit in the room for 20 minutes (while noticing how dusty, disorganized, and unclean it looks--old medications sit open on the counter top, open ointment packets, a container of expired sanitizing wipes from 2010! I start feeling like I should be elsewhere), until he finally comes in (almost 1 hour after my scheduled appointment). He looks at me briefly, does not introduce himself or apologize for the wait in the least, asks what my name is, and says "so....you're here for......?" I tell him about the painful, swollen area on my skin and start showing him while telling him I have never had anything like this and wonder if it is a boil. He glances very briefly, does not feel it or ask any questions other than when I first noticed it, while saying "hmmmm....hmmmm...so tell me about your experience with this before." I respond that I haven't had anything like this before (although I had already just said that), to which he replies: "okay yes so tell me about that experience you've had with this previously." What?! I have now said twice in a row that I have had nothing like this before!! (And mind you, this was not any language barrier as we both seemed to be native English speakers...) So I repeat myself. He sits, looking a bit confused, and seems to randomly decide that it is an infected spider bite and instantly prescribes me a course of 40 antibiotics for 10 days. How can that be the conclusion when one hasn't even felt it, really looked at it, or asked any other questions? He also tells me to use heat therapy for it by way of taking hot baths for a while. Aren't baths not advised for a skin infection, as that can just contaminate the already infected area--since bath water is not steril? The answer is yes, I am later told by my Primary Care Physician who I call after and who I should have just seen even though she is farther away. Pretty much everything Dr. Hu advised seems to be the opposite of the advice I am given by my PCP's office who tell me that it is extremely important to wash the area twice a day and keep it covered at all times (Dr. Hu left me with no follow-up care advice at all), and say that Dr. Hu should have drawn a circle around the redness of the area to measure growth/spread of infection which can become quite serious. The nurse at my PCP's office tells me I can and should draw the circle myself and monitor the red area for any growth, and immediately go to urgent care or the ER if it does grow as this can be a sign of a very serious bite/infection. She also makes it clear NOT to bathe and only take showers. Won't be going back. read more
