This coffee shop is a real find. An absolute treasure. Traveling from Fort Lauderdale through North Dakota, I stopped at the Lewis and Clark Trail Museum; within whose quaint campus this coffee shop is nestled. After an hour and a half immersed in the exhibits at the museum, I stopped in for a cup of coffee and met Kathy "Jesse" James, the store's owner. Her family goes back multiple generations in North Dakota... A real pioneer family. She still owns the family ranch and was a wealth of knowledge around the museum, its artifacts and exhibits and the history behind it all. What should've been a 30 minute stop for coffee, lasted for three hours, at which point she had to gently kick me out. In a world of Starbucks and uninspirational national brands permeating historic towns everywhere, James Gang Java is a real coffee shop, locally owned and filled with local history. I'd go so far as to say the history and character in the coffee shop is as impressive as the history in the museum. Kathy makes great coffee, has a colorful family story and is a no nonsense part of North Dakota history. Don't pass her by! read more
