Really great assortment and priced accordingly if you are a fan of the salt water taffy confections. There are so many different kinds of this stuff that if you don't watch yourself you will be sending your dentists kids to college. I passed by this store while on a recent visit to Atlantic City and since it was still a nice day temperature wise I wandered down the Boardwalk with the family and stopped in here to snag some gifts with them for friends back where they live now. The staff seemed friendly enough and the store was clean and neatly organized making it easier to select whatever it was you needed. They even had a tray with some samples to take away with you. There is a little bit of a price for these confections but this is the real deal authentic NJ salt water taffy so you get what you pay for. They had some other items like fudge and macaroons but this mission was for taffy only. Melt in your mouth salt water taffy. Pick your own instead of getting the prepackaged box - you can tell the difference in freshness. The store has a good variety of other candy, but I always make the stop solely for taffy. I would give this review five stars, but the customer service was awful. My husband couldn't leave the Jersey shore without some saltwater taffy. James' version is really good- bite size, soft and well-flavored. I can't pass up a fudge opportunity. As with their counterpart, Fralingers's, this is a great spot for salt water taffy. There are a few locations on the boardwalk and all are terrific spots to pick up taffy of all flavors, macaroons, and candies. You can choose from all kinds of flavors here by the pound and also in gift boxes. Their flavors are terrific - from fruits to classics like peppermint creams. Sugar free flavors too. Every time I am down here I buy a few boxes as gifts, to bring to my office, or for personal consumption. Cut to fit the mouth for easy eating! The candy store dates back to the 1880s! You can't get more authentic than that! I highly recommend this store above others on the boardwalk. placed four Valentine Day Orders for Chocolate Candy totaling about $200. Three of the orders had $15.99 for Taffy added on without my permission-I am not a fan of salt water taffy!!. I placed a call to the order center who said they would send an email to correct this situation-No response. I left three emails-no response. I tried leaving a voice mail on their 6093441519 customer service-which does not take phone messages. I left a message for their administrative staff-no response. I have been a loyal customer for more than 20 years of Bayard Chocolates who were taken over by James. Guess this looks like the last order-tomorrow I will call the credit card company and dispute all charges. read more

For many years I've heard the best salt water taffy comes out of Atlantic City, Jersey so during my trip to AC it was a must for me to come here. The store front is located on the Boardwalk, upon entry you are greeted to a clown cut out. To the right of the entry way along the wall is a plethora of Salt Water Taffy. Along the left are candy cases filled with fudge and a variety of confections. I quickly unwrapped a piece of molasses salt water taffy to be sure I wanted to spend my money here. Instantly I was hooked! The taffy was not overly sweet, chewy or hard. The flavor of molasses was so electrifying I grabbed a bag and filled it with different flavors. My absoluteness favorite are banana and molasses. Before I checked out the counter I noticed the chocolate covered salt water taffy again I unwrapped the Banana which was covered in dark chocolate. OMG heaven wrapped in golden foil! This was absolutely breathtaking a fine balance of taffy and chocolate again not overly sweet, chewy or hard. I filled another bag with two of each flavor stocking double in the banana and cherry. I also picked up some old fashion candy sticks one of each flavor. I haven't tried it but my boys says there better than the candy canes that are stocked in stores during the holiday season. They took over the Bayards Chocolate company... I ordered some of the chocolate covered marshmallows. On their website they look just like the Bayards Chocolate covered Marshmallows I loved as a kid. What I got were square... the marshmallow was some disgusting filling not a REAL marshmallow like Bayards always used. And the chocolate was a cheap disgusting waxy chocolate. NOT the creamy rich chocolate from Bayards!!! Worst of all... they were about $2.25 per marshmallow NOT SHIPPED... shipping was another $25... That's some SHADY @#$%^ right there!!!! read more

Understanding that they are not yet "in season " but we were there Saturday, the woman who handled our order clearly hasn't been trained in customer service or the stores policy and procedures, if they even have them. I asked about a pound of fudge, how many pieces were to a box. Knowing that normally about 6-7, she responded with 3-4. I thought maybe their pieces were much bigger and didn't question her. We picked out 4 pieces, I then asked to see our box - was it full or what. She told me that she's already sealed it (which clearly she hadn't), but again I made the mistake of letting it go. We also purchased chocolate covered peanuts and salt water taffy. Upon getting home, the box of fudge was barely half full and the fudge was stale as were the chocolate covered peanuts. I recently visited Atlantic City, on the Boardwalk. I happen into the James Candy Company. The staff is friendly and accommodating, the salt water taffy prices are comparable to any on the Boardwalk. the thing that set this place apart for me was the $5 Mystery Bag. The best way to describe it is exactly how they do on the bag " $5 mystery bag of imperfect chocolates- No picking- No peeping- A surprise in every bag." Well they don't taste "imperfect" and worth the $5 for 12oz. This is a find, if you visit the Boardwalk go to the Pier Shoppes @ Ceasars Hotel, on the 1st level, and buy a bag you will not be disappointed (that is if you love chocolate). read more

I grew up on this stuff, but over the decades, something changed. The flavors are so...minor and bland. The peppermint still has zing, but the licorice is tasteless. I recently tried the "Filled Center" Taffy. UGH! The illustration on the box cover and on the website shows taffy cut open and oozing with centers. But the centers are non-existent. I saw teeny "ribbons" on each the ends of each piece, but that taffy tasted weird. Nothing juicy. False advertising! There were two stick-on gold stars on the box; hmmm, wonder if that is a quality control warning? Tasted like these pieces were old. A waste of money. read more

Not sure if it's because I was there during the off-season (and maybe the fudge wasn't super fresh since they probably don't get a lot of foot traffic) but this just wasn't the fudge I remember loving as a kid. It was okay. But didn't really satisfy the memory craving I had of sweet, smooth peanut butter fudge from the Jersey shore. I'm glad I only got a little piece so I didn't waste it. I purchased approximately $60 worth of this candy online and paid an extra $60+ to have it shipped overnight. It was literally the last request my sister who was dying from stage 4 cancer had. The candy was never shipped. My sister passed 5 days later...nobody's fault, but the cancer. However, I asked for a refund of my $121.92. I heard directly from the company's CEO that I would get a refund. It's been a month and crickets . No heart, no business smarts and certainly no respect. It pains me to write this negative review for such delicious taffy, but the customer service is extremely poor. I received a gift box of taffy mailed from this location on September 28,2018. Upon opening the contents, something was amiss. The taffy was melted and stuck to all the waxed wrapping. I called customer service to explain and was told someone would call from the corporate office but they never did. I made two subsequent calls each about a week or so later with no avail. I then sent emails on two separate occasions explaining how the taffy was inedible, and requesting either a replacement or refund to the original purchaser. This was a gift from a relative who is a frequent customer. Finally, after the sender complained to the credit card company, I coincidentally received a message on my home phone stating a replacement would be shipped to me. It arrived on November 1st-- 5 weeks after I lodged my initial complaint. What a shame! read more

Couldn't wait to try! Planning a birthday in Los Angeles and thought taffy and molasses pops would go great with my party favors...knowing none of my girls had ever been to the Jersey shore they would certainly be a surprise hit! Bought a pound of taffy and a dozen pops. Pops arrived with all the sticks coated in chocolate but taffy was fine. I took a pic and sent to their customer service. I received a respectable reply but it was all down hill from there. They offered a replacement of 2 pounds of taffy, and were concerned about the pops melting as the weather gets warmer, but they only offered a molasses flavor taffy (because the pops were molasses???) but that neither fit my flavor nor color scheme. A 2-3 day delay of back and forth, very vague emails and a few ignored voice mails ensued (you can't speak with a human unless your placing an order!) and for all this effort I finally got another one-pound box of taffy - not the two as promised. SALT water taffy Means "James" If it's not James it's just not taffy. I was born in Atlantic City and when I come back I always get a box or two. This year I bought eight and sent them from California to Rome , Italy for Christmas Presents to my family. They offer a rainbow of flavors each one better than the last. Go on line if you can't get to Atlantic City, they sometimes offer a 20% discount and a free box of taffy for you. Service is fast and packed like a care package from mom. Everything we got from this place was good. The fudge - every flavor was good - especially the maple walnut. The taffy was Fralinger's taffy and it was delicious - pick out your own flavors - do not get a pre packed box because those are not fresh and you don't want any licorice or whatever you don't personally like in there. The best thing we got were caramel covered marshmallows wrapped in yellow wax paper and sealed with a gold sticker. Those were amazing. LOVED every bite. I've been going to James for over 30 years. I always make a point to stop there for fudge, choc covered salt water taffy etc. I love it all. This year what a disappointment. The fudge they are selling, is not the fudge James has been selling for over 30 years. They must've been bought out & whoever bought them thinks their fudge is better. It is NOT. I've been a fan since the late 50's up to the early 70's when I moved away. Even in the bad old days of Atlantic City, it was one of the things I could count on. I'd get a box here and there, maybe a family member would send me one when I was overseas...but it was always consistent. The latest buy...not very good. Besides not having the name of the taffy on the wrappers like they used to, they got cheap and just lumped two plastic bags of mixed "stuff" inside the box. No longer trayed up or even with the little brochure telling the story...they just got..."cheap". What other way can I say it. Just..."cheap". No longer the "experience" i was used to...and I was loyal to James and not that other company, who we thought were just pretenders to the throne. I think my favorite flavors were vanilla and cinnamon, and not one were in the box. I wound up tossing the other bag without even opening it. Nope, the taffy tastes "off" and is no better, and actually worse than stuff I could buy at any supermarket. James....ya done did me wrong. read more
