She divided my 4c, below-shoulder-length hair into four sections and harshly combed through each one. I was deeply upset by the experience, but I did my best to remain calm. I wish I could return because Jamal truly is skilled, and his trim was terrific. However, I only have so much hair, and I can't risk having it damaged by someone who doesn't seem to understand how to handle black hair and isn't willing to listen to the customer. If you care at all about your natural hair, GO TO JAMAL! I went to him for the big chop, and he went above and beyond. I messaged him on yelp and told him what I wanted and he took it from there. You do have to book through the app, but it's super easy to use, especially as a repeat customer. When I got to the salon, there was a bit of a wait (as in all salons), but he and his assistant Madison checked in with me and kept me posted. The wash, color application, and blow dry from Madison was amazing, and the cut from Jamal was exceptional. He made sure I was comfortable with every change, and then mixed up the perfect demipermanent brown for my hair when I said I wanted it a little darker. He was super accommodating, even though I was his last appointment on a Saturday, and ended up asking him to trim more after he had finished up. I was nervous to get a keratin treatment on my natural hair because I'd seen so many horror stories online about heat damage and breakage. I texted Jamal before I booked an appointment, and he answered all my questions / concerns patiently and in detail. He styled my hair in a way that made it soft, shiny and sleek. Looking for a hairdresser can be the most stressful, tedious, cumbersome ordeal ever! It took me 3 hairdressers in NYC since being back in the tri-state for the past 2 yrs. Everybody thinks they are the best just because they have been washing hair and pressing it for the past 'xyz' years. That's NOT what makes you the best in my book. I'm looking for someone who can differentiate hair types/grades, products that work for each individual, has "growing hands", know how to STYLE to an individuals face, and truly cares about hair - meaning they don't just stop at doing it. They continue their education by attending hairs shows, expos, reading - really knowing their craft. I'm not in the market for the best weaver of fake hair, but somebody who can grow mine. Jamal embodies most of the above. He is such a sweetheart - patient and cares about the end result of your hair and his performance. My review is based on 3 visits, which included a trim on one. I am super hesitant to let any hairdresser cut my hair, unless they truly know what they are doing - HE DOES! Disappointed. He did nothing. I went to his salon last Friday after an extensive yelp and non yelp search. I explained to him in detail with pictures my previous trauma hair experiences and drastic hair loss from different salons. I found him confrontational with poor customer service. His assistant, who he did not introduce nor did he explain she would be doing everything-- she detangled, oiled, washed, then I sat under dryer for awhile as other Clients were worked on then she blew dried my hair like you would at home then plait in a corn row. She was impatient ( my hair was really tangled) while combing out my hair and somewhat curt but she gave good advice on keeping it tangle free and was sympathetic to what happened to me which is why I gave 3 stars. I found out about Jamal's services by conducting a FBI worthy search for a reputable salon in NY. This is no easy task! However my research was so worth it. I found him on yelp and started viewing his IG almost daily. I finally decided I had to get my hair done again (it had been six months and my hair had been through some trauma in the past, but I decided I had to take the dive.) You download his app and book your appointment. Simple, simple. 2. There isn't a long wait to be seen. My appointment was at 2 and he took my at 2. 3. He takes the time to ask about your "hair story" what your goals are, where you're apprehensive etc. 4. His assistant is so so sweet and extremely knowledgeable. She understands your scalp and adjusts how she washes accordingly and will explain the type of hair you have. Her blowout was phenomenal. 5. THEY FINGER DETANGLE 6. They are so concerned with heat damage. Healthy hair is number one. 7. Jamal's skills are second to none. My hair has never looked this good. It's soft, bouncy, silky, shiny. 8. He isn't scissor happy. He trims beautifully. 9. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It made getting my hair done fun (i don't usually like staying in a salon forever which brings me to pro 10 10. I went to Jamal the first time a few weeks ago. I got a wash, set and cut. I've been relaxing my hair myself for years and got some braids and left them in for too long and realized upon taking them out that it's time to get a real hair cut and I need to find a stylist to do it for me. I was so nervous going in because I would be trusting a stranger to cut my hair but still wanted to do it. I came in and Jamal took my hair down asked me about my hair and then said he could evaluate better after a wash. Which he absolutely did. He's warm and funny and makes great conversation so it's easy establishing a level of trust on the first appointment. After my hair was dry we spoke about how short I wanted to go and I showed him 2 pictures of hair cuts that I loved. And he suggested the perfect length between the two and I went with it. He cut my hair and gave me face framing layers in front (but only slightly because that area was shorter than the rest of my hair) he gave me good hair care tips and stressed that I get my ends trimmed every 3 months. I left there feeling amazingggggg and my hair looked absolutely epic. I'm talking running my finger through it and it falling ever so perfectly like on tv kind of epic. I booked my appointment online and immediately received an email response from Jamal and a call from the salon to schedule my session. First off let me start by saying that Jamal is a true Professional that respects the "Gift" that he has been entrusted with to care for hair! I had an appointment yesterday at 3:00 after work I did everything in power to make it there on time after seeing his work on "Yelp" of course I was delayed on the trains. It was like meeting a celebrity, who you've admired for such a long time! He saw the wreck on my head, short, dry, badly colored natural hair and touched it and said what am looking to get done? With no clue he asked me about my lifestyle-do I workout? Do I want to be in my hair in the morning for a short or a long period of time? I said short of course for work. He suggested texturizing to loosen my tightly coiled hair and a trim. It would be an understatement to say that he was patient, gentle, and very knowledgeable given the fact that I'm tendered headed.
